Accreditation in the U.S. is unique in many ways — one reason why understanding how it works across all the various levels is so important. We spoke with André Foisy, Executive Director for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning Analytics at Excelsior University, regarding his time as a recent CHEA Fellow to get an inside look at how CHEA develops, initiates, and enforces various policies and requirements. Though CHEA is the accreditor of accreditors, institutions are also their members who they serve and support as well. According to André, embracing an anthropological lens to understanding the nuances of accreditation can help educational establishments better understand what accreditation means, how to achieve each standard, and how to best leverage accreditation for positive outcomes.Join us as we discuss:How institutional accreditation is interpreted, negotiated, and leveraged as a vital toolThe importance of Linda Suskie's five dimensions of quality and the influence of these on André's work with signals of qualityThe impact of AALHE on the assessment community

Welcome to Authors of Union. Today, we are going to talk with Dr. Pete Caccavari, who has written his first chapbook of poetry, Minor Loss of Fidelity, shipping soon from Finishing Line Press. The book depicts people reacting to their environment – whether natural or human-made – and their struggles to make sense of those encounters. Caccavari's poems chronicle a variety of losses, but also a variety of hard-won gains. These encounters with the environment are mirrored in encounters of content with poetic forms. Personal history, natural history, and poetic history undergird the present, and these gird the present for the future. (Source: Finishing Line Press) Caccavari wears two hats. By day, he is the Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Title IX Coordinator for Union Institute & University. His job requires compliance and attention to detail. “I enjoy that job very much – it's where I can satisfy my desire for order."  By night, his creative side emerges. “Poetry, on the other hand, lets me color outside the lines and break the rules.” Caccavari earned his bachelor of arts in English from Xavier University and his M.A. Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University.  He lives in Cincinnati and credits the beauty of the landscape and city as inspiration. The host for the interview-style podcast is Dr. Linwood Rumney, professor in Union's General Education Program, poet, and author. He is the winner of the 17th Annual Gival Press Poetry Award for Abandoned Earth. Rumney's poems and nonfiction essays have appeared in many publications including the North American Review and Crab Orchard Review. His translations of Aloysius Bertrand, an early practitioner of the modern prose poem in French, have appeared in Arts & Letters and Hayden's Ferry Review. Rumney recently completed his Ph.D. as a Charles Phelps Taft Dissertation Fellow at the University of Cincinnati.

We get a bit of an insight into which way she leans when she invites Greg on the first one-on-one of the week. Greg date: Seattle themed. They toss a fish and do unspeakable things to poor oysters. Greg is like Eyor but an Eyor you kinda wanna make out with. They seem like a normal couple. Meanwhile, Michael video chats with his young son, James, while drinking a mimosa. The group date card is announced, indicating that Mike P. has the final one-on-one. This has Brendan Bangs upset. He decides to pay Katie a visit in her room. His intentions with this visit seemed really unclear to me. Andrew, Justin, Blake and Michael have their group date. It begins with  vagina flower art painting???? Michael sculpts a butt. Andrew makes a dirty sushi picture. Justin is very serious about all this. And Blake's picture is so obscene they black it all out. Thoughts? That evening, Blake makes it clear that he is NOT in love with Katie but them falling in love is effin' inevitable. Thoughts?Bill's XC on emophilia Justin shows Katie his impressive painting. We are reminded that he was her first kiss on the Bachelorette. Then they make out. In her convo with Michael, Katie says that if they're meant to be together, then she's confident that everything else will fall into place. She thinks all the time about what it would mean to become a stepmom and the life she pictures herself, Michael, and James having together is “such a dream.” Intensive Mothering EC DanielleAndrew talks about his football career and being in Austria. Btw- I completely forgot about his weird on again off again accent this week. She says they will work things out down the road if he is picked. Michael get the rose. You can tell Andrew is hurt it wasn't him. The men are starting to show the wear and tear of the process a bit.Mike's One-on-One with Cuddle Queen Jean. This date was doomed. It is very awkward. Then if it couldn't get weirder, Mike starts comparing her cuddles to his mother's. (Insert wide eyes). Then Katie cries and sends Mike home. Rose ceremony. All of the internet is surprised (except for bill) when Katie sends Andrew home. They have a heartbreaking breakup. Katie isn't confident she made the right choice. The next morning, Andrew shows up at her door. He wanted to leave her smiling. They have a short conversation, he leaves and gives her a note on his way out. It reads, “If you change your mind, I'll be waiting.” Katie chases after him. They hug. Then she asks him to stay and he's like, “nah”. WHAT HAPPENED HERE? Oh yeah, and then they kiss and he leaves. Next week is hometowns. Katie hasn't told anyone she loves them. Everyone is kinda freaking. Lessons learned. Megan, any shoutouts?

Aeron Zentner is an accomplished leader in the world of analytics, supply chain management, research, and a couple dozen other things. Currently the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness at Coastline College, Dr. Zentner has helped in the completion of thousands of research projects and has been published dozens of times. In his spare time, he works as an editor and author for SAGE Publications and McGraw Hill. Aeron first started to get into analytics back in 2008 when he practically fell into a research analyst job. At the age of only 29, he became a Dean and not long after was asked to teach analytics to people who did not have a major in it. To do that, to teach analytics to people who were not necessarily steeped in it, he developed an experiential learning program with SAGE. He worked with twelve other experts around the U.S. to develop the program which will be coming out soon.  Teaching others about the importance of data is a genuine passion for Aeron. He sees it as a bridge that will help us achieve a greater understanding of the world around us. This can help people, regardless of the field they are in to get beyond mere intuition and gut reaction that is based on immediate observations and provide a bigger picture of what is going on beyond what they directly experience. It helps actually provide the ‘why' to what they are seeing and experiencing. The data then can be the bridge that will help people utilize their available resources more efficiently, to get the most bang for their buck.  How does one stop bias from creeping in though? Bias after all is a part of the human condition, we naturally see things in a way that is favorable to ourselves. The first step is to actually take a hard look at the questions that we are trying to use data to answer. Is the question itself biased? How is it being framed? It is also worth looking at what is influencing us. How much is based on our interpretation of customer behaviors and how that will affect our activity going forward? Finally, any company should check itself against its mission. Is your personal bias, or even the success of the company in a particular area influencing decisions in a way that is contrary to the mission? That mission becomes a standard by which the company can measure itself.  So, not to put too fine a point on it, how does Coastline College measure up? Does the college and its students live up to Coastline's own high standards? Does the college produce students who are competent to analyze data? One thing the college is doing is tracking students post-graduation to see how they themselves are actually performing according to their own goals at the time of graduation. And of course, they go directly to the students when they come into the college as well. Surveys ask them why they selected Coastline and the particular courses they did. What are their goals? What do they hope to get out of their time at the college? All of that data helps the college be a lot more flexible than other similar institutions. It also helps that they are small, which allows them to more easily tweak their classes, how they are constructed, how long they are, and to make changes to the overall college experience if they identify a problem.   With such a focus on getting direct data from their students, Coastline College is setting itself up to be a true beacon of the next stage of the digital age, one that will be instrumental in getting people to better understand the changing world. Dr. David Eubanks created a bit of a stir in the higher ed assessment community with a November 2017 Intersection article critiquing common higher education assessment practices. This prompted a discussion that moved beyond the assessment community to a broader audience as a result of articles in the New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Inside Higher Ed. In today's podcast, Dr Eubanks joins us to discuss how assessment can help improve student learning and how to be more efficient and productive in our assessment activities. Dr. Eubanks is the Assistant Vice President for Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness at Furman University and Board Member of the Association for the Assessment of Learning and Higher Education. Philosophy Bakes Bread, Radio Show & Podcast

In this fifty-ninth episode of the Philosophy Bakes Bread radio show and podcast, we interview Dr. Annie Davis Weber yet again, this time on the subject of "Finding Peace" with Buddhism. This episode is different and special, as the very first wholly live episode, recorded while on the air live on WRFL Lexington, 88.1 FM in Lexington, Kentucky. The episode aired and was recorded on December 18th, 2017. Dr. Annie Davis Weber earned her doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy at Vanderbilt University and is the Assistant Provost for Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at the University of Kentucky. In this episode, she is representing only her own point of view. This episode is a follow-up of sorts on Ep0.1 from the "pilot season," titled "Acceptance and Happiness with Stoicism." We talk about Annie's experience learning about and growing from some challenges that arose at the start of Eric and Annie's daughter's life, when Helen suffered a stroke and other medical difficulties. Annie learned a great deal from Buddhism and joined Anthony and Eric in this episode to talk about her experience and the insights that she found most valuable from the Buddhist tradition. We also celebrate the end of our first official season of Philosophy Bakes Bread.  Listen for our “You Tell Me!” questions and for some jokes in one of our concluding segments, called “Philosophunnies.” Reach out to us on Facebook @PhilosophyBakesBread and on Twitter @PhilosophyBB; email us at philosophybakesbread@gmail.com; or call and record a voicemail that we play on the show, at 859.257.1849.
