When was the last time your doctor mentioned your soul during treatment? I'm willing to bet never—and that's precisely the problem Dr. Catherine Kelly addresses in this profound conversation about what's missing from modern medicine and psychology."The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said the soul is present in every illness and every organ over 2,000 years ago. Carl Jung said the same for psychology. But where is it now?" Dr. Kelly asks. As a former medical school professor, she witnessed firsthand how the soul has been systematically removed from our healing traditions despite being the most foundational aspect of who we are.In this eye-opening discussion, we explore the Soul Health Model—a revolutionary framework visualizing our wellbeing as a tree with ten essential branches, including physical, psychological, interpersonal, financial, sexual, and recreational health. For practitioners interested in incorporating soul health into their work, Dr. Kelly shares details about her new certification program designed to bring this missing dimension back to healing professions. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, feeling disconnected, or simply curious about a more holistic approach to well-being, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how reconnecting with your soul might be the missing piece in your healing journey.Bio Dr. Katherine Kelly, is a licensed psychologist in her own psychotherapy, soul-healing/coaching and consulting practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Colorado (1992) and both her Master's (1995) and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (1999) from Indiana State University. In our first Throwback Thursday, we are re-posting our popular episode “Are the kids alright? A look at teen mental health in NJ.” Recent developments nationally and in Trenton point to the continued urgency around mental health for our teens. We invite you to listen (again). Forty-two percent of New Jersey teens have reported feeling sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks in a row. Two-thirds of teens in the US who experience a mental health challenge don't seek help. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among Americans between the ages of 15 and 19. These alarming statics point to a real problem. In this episode, we hear from experts on what is driving this epidemic of worsening mental health, particularly among young people in New Jersey, what signals to look for, and what can be done to change course. We discuss the topic in two parts. First with Robert Kley and Jaime Angelini, leaders from the Mental Health Association in New Jersey who share some of the foundational pieces around mental health for young people. We then hear from Jackie Looby from Cornerstone Family Programs for a deep-dive on an innovative, evidenced-based program called “Teen Mental Health First Aid.” Jackie is joined by Azaria and Andrea, New Jersey high schoolers who have been trained in Teen Mental Health First Aid and seen its impact on their peers. If you or someone you know is in crisis, contact the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling 988.

Our friend Eric Litwiller is a tremendous voice for MHA and connecting many of us to this organization so we can help. He shares the story of "the Bell" and is candid about struggles that any of us can and are facing. Please visit the MHAsck.org website and see how you can make this holiday season better for someone.
If someone you loved were having a mental health challenge, would you be able to recognize it? If so, what would you do? In this episode, I talk with an expert in the field. Jaime Angelini is the Director of Special Projects for the Mental Health Association in New Jersey. We discuss their training programs that teach us how to help a teen or adult with a mental health issue. We talk about the stigma still associated with mental health, how to create a wellness plan, the importance of early detection, and the effects of loneliness. Don't miss this critical episode on a topic we should know more about.

May is Mental Health Month and on June 10 Cranford will be the site of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey's Walk for Wellness at Nomahegan Park. Mental health, of course, is about much more than a month or a walk, but these events help to highlight the importance of the issue and providing resources to address it.On this week's Cranford Radio podcast, we talk with Robert Kley, the vice president and COO of the association and Jill Schlossberg, the director for Hudson and Union counties, about the organization and the June walk.
Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) is joined by mental health advocate Ben Harrington on this episode of Tennessee Talks to discuss the current mental health crisis in the U.S., how mental health is stigmatized, and what state legislatures and the federal government can do to better serve people dealing with mental health issues.

On Midday today, guest host Ashley Sterner spotlights some of the legislative, health policy and spiritual developments in transgender rights here in Maryland. Democratic leaders in the General Assembly have made strengthening abortion rights in Maryland a top priority. This session, they're expected to approve a bill that would create a state constitutional right to abortion access. If the amendment passes, voters will decide its fate next fall. This comes as abortion rights are being restricted in many states, following last year's Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe V. Wade.Governor Wes Moore wants Maryland to stand against this tide and be what he calls a “safe haven for abortion rights.” Abortion rights aren't the only rights under assault in many parts of the country. Many Republican-led state legislatures are also working to strip rights from transgender people. More than 150 anti-trans bills have been proposed around the country, many focused on younger trans people… but not exclusively. There are bills restricting and criminalizing crucial medical care for youths and adults, bills preventing trans people from performing in public, and more. Some Maryland leaders are working to shore up the rights – and protect the dignity – of trans people here in our state. And this hour, we'll be taking a look at two pieces of legislation that would do just that.A We'll start with the Trans Health Equity Act, which got its first hearing before a House of Delegates committee on Tuesday. Ashley's first guests are Democratic Del. Anne Kaiser (District 14 -Montgomery Co.), who is sponsoring the bill in the Maryland House, and Dr. Helene Hedian, director of Clinical Education at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's Center for Transgender Health, and Assistant Vice Chair for LGBTQ+ Equity and Education. Studies show that transgender people suffer significantly higher rates of violence while incarcerated than the rest of the prison population. And members of the General Assembly are looking to address that, with a bill called the Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act. It'll get its first hearing in the House Judiciary Committee next week. Earlier, Ashley spoke with the co-conveners of the Trans Rights Advocacy Coalition: Jamie Grace Alexander, a Black trans woman activist and multidisciplinary artist who also serves as policy coordinator for Free State Justice, and the community director of the Baltimore Trans Alliance; and Margo Quinlan, a trans woman activist and the director of Youth & Older Adult Policy at the Mental Health Association of Maryland. In today's final segment, Ashley speaks with Pastor Emily Scott. Pastor Emily currently serves two congregations who have formed a unique partnership: St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Dreams and Visions, in Baltimore. These two congregations, one old, one new, are sharing a building, pastoral staff, and a commitment to their neighborhood and the LGBTQ+ community.
