Trigger Warning: Suicide, Suicidal IdeationThis week I share with you one of the greatest messages I have had the privilege to live through and to be able to share. Mental Health is one of my greatest passions as I have lived through some of the lowest lows and feel uniquely qualified to share a little about my own struggle, some reflections, and the way I live now that includes an immense feeling of gratitude. If you have struggled to understand mental health, the idea of suicide, or how a person can feel "at that point" this is a great episode to broaden your perspective. If you are a person struggling, I hope this gives you hope. If you are any human walking this earth, I hope that this will touch your heart and encourage you to choose love and hold the people you love more closely. If this is hard for you to hear because you know me, I thank you for embracing my vulnerability and allowing me to share my story. My favorite thing about my life is that I get to use it to help others.
Meet Kevin Berthia, the first storyteller of 2024 for season 2 of the I Know Lonely Project. As a survivor of 22 suicide attempts, depression and a battle over mental health has always been a deep part of Kevin's story. His journey hasn't been an easy one, but Kevin lives life with hope. Kevin shared something really powerful in his podcast, he said “I think that we don't understand the void that we each fill in that world. There's something that you bring to the world that nobody else can bring. And as long as you're not bringing it, that void is not being filled.” And as we kick off a new year, we hope his story reminds you how much YOU MATTER to the world. And that no matter how dark it gets, there's always HOPE. Your story isn't over yet. y friend Meka Reed (baptized with her husband in October 2020, Lives in Ohio) joins us to talk about her conversation story and her new book called “My Dot Matters: Rediscovering Faith by Realizing Self-Worth”. Meka starts with her life being defined by suicidal ideation and being in the psych ward—and how they all changed when she read the Book of Mormon for the first time. That led to her attending church and getting baptized (and married) on the same day on October 10, 2020. Meka talks about how she still has mental health challenges—but suicide ideation has ended as the Gospel of Jesus Christ has provided healing, hope and purpose. Meka then talks about the spiritual impressions to write and book and the process to get it published. This is a powerful book about finding worth and meaning—and how that happened for Meka in her conversation to the Church. Thank you Meka for being on the podcast. I was so moved hearing your story. You are brave and strong—and helping many others find hope and purpose! Links: Meka's New Book: https://mydotmatters.com/

Hello, my name is Sheridan Taylor. I'm a combat veteran, former corrections officer, and suicide survivor. I write and speak about mental health and addiction, the stigma of mental illness, and how to reduce the harm they do to us as individuals and as a society. I'm not a soldier anymore, but I'm still a fighter. I fight alcoholism, PTSD, depression and anxiety and win, daily. I fought grief and loss when my first wife died a slow death because her demons took her. I fought suicidal ideation. I fight the apathy and casual brutality so prevalent in our culture. I live in beautiful southern Alberta in the foothills of the beautiful Rockies with my beautiful wife, their two beautiful sons, beautiful Border Collies, and horrid Lhasa Apso. I'm quite happy to be done writing this book so I can start reading books written by other people again. It's way easier! In Not Okay? Okay. combat veteran and suicide survivor Sheridan Taylor chronicles the anguish and rage he experienced in the darkest depths of despair, and he shares the process and triumph of fighting his way out. After a lifetime enduring pain and discovering love, Sheridan shares his unique perspective on the power of hope and how to heal the mental health crisis plaguing our world. This is a book about how an insecure, overcompensating, professional tough guy stopped hating the world—and stopped hating himself in the process. This is a challenging book because it tells truths that may challenge what you believe. If you or someone you love struggles with mental health, it is the book for you.https://sheridantaylor.ca/

***A QUICK WARNING***: This episode contains raw depictions of traumatic events, which include sexual abuse/violence towards minors and mention of a suicide attempt. Listener discretion is heavily advised. Rex ShadesEagle overcame his addiction after 27 years by addressing his childhood pain. From the age of six to twelve, he was subjected to physical and sexual abuse until being expelled onto the streets for retaliating against his abuser. On the streets of South New Jersey, he would learn how to hustle, lie, cheat, and steal. Rex kept using heroin for the next 20 years, going in and out of jail, until one night in October 2013 when the lies crumbled and a new man emerged.
Why did I want to talk with Kelsie Igasan on the Knockin' Doorz Down podcast? I am your host Jason LaChance, and I spoke with Kelsie because she has been a personal inspiration, not only for her activism in the addiction recovery community but also for her vulnerability as a wife and mother. Leading by example to show her children that they need not carry any shame that surrounds addiction and mental health issues. Kelsie was a nationally ranked all-star cheerleader and gymnast, now a recovering alcoholic/addict, suicide survivor, and mom of four. She educates communities on the dangers of trauma and its impact on mental health and addiction. She entered into recovery in 2006 at the age of sixteen; she is a trauma survivor who lived through teen incarceration, sexual assault, a traumatic brain injury both on and off the mat, mental health disorders, and in 2017 survived a suicide attempt in the thick of a relapse; leading to long term recovery. With over a decade of experience in recovery; Kelsie shares her story of trauma survival with the hopes of ending the mental health stigma while inspiring others to live unashamed with purpose. Kelsie is doing amazing work in her community, sharing her story with anyone and everyone who can gain value from The Butterfly Inside. Emma Benoit became extremely passionate about suicide prevention after surviving a suicide attempt in 2017, the summer before her senior year in high school. At the time, she was a popular varsity cheerleader with a supportive family and lots of friends, but on the inside, she was filled with depression and anxiety, and had never told a soul about it. Her attempt resulted in a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed but helped her find faith and purpose; and propelled her on a mission to use her painful experience and miraculous recovery to help others. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/normalizetheconversation/support

My friend Michael Finch bravely shares his story. Michael talks about realizing at BYU that he is gay before his mission, resulting in feelings of “my life is over”. At that time, Michael ignored this realization, and he served a successful mission in New York City speaking Mandarin Chinese. Michael talks about returning home and trying to move forward with his life including coming out as gay (positive experience). However, suicidal ideation (which has been part of Michael's story since before his mission) continued until Michael's suicide attempt in March 2021. Michael bravely shares more about that experience, what he has learned and why he decided to openly share about his suicide attempt to help others. A year after his suicide attempt, Michael made this Instagram post in March 2022 (www.instagram.com/p/CbgRYONvJMEG2Y9pKxDA2u7r272D-WqoTy-EZk0/). If you are feeling suicidal or what to help others, please listen to Michael's podcast. He helps us understand why someone considers suicide and how best to help them. I learned so much listening to Michael. If you are suicidal, please call 800-273-8255 Thank you, Michael, for being on the podcast and your courage to share your story. Respect.
