This episode focuses on the ways to overcome childhood trauma in the black community. Despite it being a very uncomfortable and touchy subject, it is important to talk about. My guest, Fatima Oliver, author of the book "The Prescription is in the Dirt" and life coach, helping black women deal with childhood trauma, discussed how she herself has been able to overcome her own personal traumatic events in her life, how counseling has helped her and most importantly, how making the ultimate choice to save her own life for the sake of herself and her children and in doing so, getting to the place where she let go of the people who hindered her growth, which we all know to be a very difficult thing. Fatima spoke about how she was on the brink of taking her own life, not knowing how or when she would snap or react irrationally, and how it was for her to make a choice to prioritize her mental and spiritual health. She also speak to me about how hard it was to let go of certain people in her life because of the family dynamic she shares with them. We talked about how as adults and parents in our own right, how hard it is to navigate through life dealing with unresolved issues and how sometimes we don't know whether they're resolved until something triggers a nerve within us. In prioritizing our mental health, we have to keep in mind that those who were responsible for the physical, mental, and emotional damage to us won't always own up to it or even apologize for it, but it is our responsibility to seek the professional help we need to forgive those who took our innocence and youthfulness away from us in order to move forward in our lives to be our best selves. A special thanks to my guest, Fatima Oliver, for being on this show to share what has worked for her, how she is helping black women with her efforts to guide them onto a path to becoming more than their traumatic circumstances. In order to move forward, we have to let go of the past. We are not responsible for our trauma as kids, but we are responsible for our healing as adults.

Fatima Oliver is a wife, mother of four boys, an author, and an extreme lover of chocolate. The loss of her first child was the epitome of heartbreak. She felt like a tremendous failure to her husband and as a woman. When her marriage ended she felt bamboozled as though life was one big joke at her expense. Have you ever felt that way? Both tragedies taught Fatima how unfair life can be but also exposed an opportunity for faith to carry her.  Fatima has embraced self-discovery and acceptance by challenging insecurity, anxiety, and depression from childhood trauma, heartbreak, and physical abuse. The result brought tremendous breakthroughs in her life and helped cultivate some baby steps she shares with others. We are not meant to do life alone. Everyone needs a safe place to fall. It is critical to change a victim mentality to a victory mindset - here is how Accepting hard truths is essential Releasing people from great expectations is a path to forgiveness During Fatima's interview, she will give you the key steps for your soul healing journey and give you the strength to continue: Fatima is offering a bonus for anyone listening to this interview - a 20-minute "Safe Place” session, where you are able to share what's on your heart, uninterrupted. There is great power in being heard and what is shared stays in this safe space.  The Prescription is in the Dirt is a bold, funny, illuminating, and sometimes hard-to-swallow inspirational memoir, that embraces the journey to self-love and acceptance. It served as an extension of freedom and therapy while writing it and is now used to lift the voices of those considering their own soul journey. Speaking the truth in love is not just powerful when it is towards others. It is even more impactful when it is used for self-reflection. Waiting on loved ones to grow, was wasting time I could be using to mature myself. I needed to start participating in the change that was happening in my life instead of reacting to it all the time. This meant releasing unrealistic expectations for people to live up to, and accepting them right where they are. Then, peacefully detached myself from any future scenarios that did not respect my growth. "For years I believed love meant suffering from someone unconditionally. Love is long-suffering but it is also gentle - not a host of emotional and mental torment. But hurt people hurt people.  This truth does not lose its value based on who is dishing out the offense. This is why some people should be loved from across the street. I am thankful for the route I had to take to learn these life lessons. Trudging through discomfort and down-right tragedies helped me to find my identity.    My pain exposed God's grace. My fears exposed His protection. And the rejection I encountered by those I loved the most, revealed his undying love for me. Our behavior is a reflection of our freedom, and I was bound for most of my life, waiting for someone to come and do for me what I was unwilling to do for myself."

I believe there is still significant power in the sharing of testimonies. In this day and age tangibility and honesty is what most people are yearning for, whether it be in their home, in relationships, or in spirituality. We are all seeking to fill the holes in our dissoluteness, with light and love. And with that belief I lay myself on the line, sharing my most intimate moments with you. With the hope you will walk away feeling empowered to be your truest self! Also, so that you will do the same for someone else-in a pay it forward kinda way. I grew up the only girl with 5 brothers. There was no precious Princess in my house. My Mother was a single Parent and was tough as nails; sometimes to a fault. At the age of two I was recovering from burns on 25% of my body. By the age of ten I was emphatically convinced pain and family was synonymous. One Stepfather beat my brother and me for sport. Another violated me in a way I had never experienced and it would take thirty-four years to confront the pain of it all. These mentionable' s, alongside the death of a child, abandonment issues, physical abuse from a spouse, and an inherited blood disorder effecting my son eventually sent me spiraling. But God! The entire journey birthed an inspirational memoir titled, "The Prescription is in the Dirt". Now Available in Paperback and eBook version on Amazon.com. A Self-published love that has gained incredible responses. Throughout my journey I learned three key foundations I believe I am meant to share: Everyone needs a safe place to fall, (freaking out in the love zone). A victim-mentality must change to a victor mindset. It is okay to not be okay. But it is not okay to remain that way. With a survivor's heart I had to approach each one of these principals to begin my soul healing. It's been an enlightening journey. Now, I'm ready to share it with you. If you'll have me... And you're not alone! This episode of Belief Busters asks the question of how do we heal childhood trauma. We give you permission to feel those feelings, challenge the thoughts of others telling you who you were, and to now be willing to change their beliefs to live a life well lived. Our guest is Fatima Oliver, she truly believes there is significant power in the sharing of testimonies. We are all seeking to fill the holes in our dissoluteness, with light and love. At the age of two she was recovering from burns on 25% of her body. By the age of ten she was emphatically convinced pain and family was synonymous. As an adult Fatima experienced the death of a child, abandonment issues, and physical abuse from a spouse that sent her spiraling. This entire journey birthed an inspirational memoir titled, "The Prescription is in the Dirt". Now available in paperback and eBook version on Amazon.com. Throughout her journey she has learned key truth's: Everyone needs a safe place to fall. Emotions are meant to be acknowledged and not ignored. A victim-mentality must change to a victor mindset. It is okay to not be okay. But it is never okay to remain that way. You can reach Fatima @ www.fatimac.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sheree-taylor-jones/support
