Finding Mastery
The Psychology of Fighting Cancer | Dr Valter Longo

Finding Mastery

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2026 58:32

If your body already has powerful systems designed to repair and protect you, are your daily habits helping switch them on... or working against them?Dr. Valter Longo is a professor and director of the Longevity Institute at USC, one of the world's leading researchers on aging, nutrition, and lifespan, and the author of The Longevity Diet and his latest book, Fasting Cancer. His path into this work is an unusual one. He started as a jazz performance major, chasing rock guitar, and walked away the moment they told him he had to direct a marching band. What pulled him toward aging traces back to being five years old, in the room when his grandfather died, and a question that lodged in him and never left: what if little things can make such a big difference? That question became a career. Longo walks Dr. Michael Gervais through the science of living to 110, a number drawn from two real people he followed personally, and the trade-off at the heart of aging: the body can pour its energy into growth and reproduction, or into protection and repair, but not both at once. From there he challenges one of the loudest narratives in health and performance today, the push for high protein, laying out why he believes most people are eating far more than the research supports, and what a safer balance actually looks like. The conversation moves into the work Longo is best known for: fasting-mimicking diets, why he says fasting on its own doesn't mean anything, and how cycles of eating less may activate the body's own repair and regeneration. He and Mike explore what this could mean for cancer, where Longo is careful and precise about what the science does and doesn't yet show, and they close on what it takes to unlearn a foundational belief when the evidence stops holding up. Mike opens up about how this conversation pushed against a narrative he'd carried his whole life, and why he wanted to have it anyway. In this conversation, we explore:Why aging and cancer are deeply connected, and what that means for preventionThe trade-off between growth and protection that shapes how we ageWhy Longo believes most people eat far too much proteinWhat a safer, mostly plant-based protein balance looks likeWhy fasting on its own is a meaningless word, and what to do insteadHow fasting-mimicking cycles may trigger the body's repair and regenerationWhat the science does and doesn't yet show about food and cancerWhat it takes to unlearn a belief when the evidence stops holding upIf you've ever wondered whether your daily choices are quietly helping or hurting the systems meant to keep you well, this conversation offers a science-backed place to start thinking about your health and lifestyle.A note from the team: This episode doesn't exist in a vacuum. Over the last several months, Mike has had numerous conversations on health, nutrition with world-renowned experts like Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Tim Spector, among others. These are all rich conversations that at times hold conflicting advice and guidance. We encourage you to listen to all of them, and as always, consult your doctor on what practices are best for you. Health, nutrition, and longevity are all deeply intertwined with living a life of full potential, and we're committed to having these great conversations with world experts on these subjects. Should you try to fix your parents? Most people spend years trying. Here's what actually works — and what's just making it worse. In this candid Q&A episode, Barb and Michelle get into three questions that don't have easy answers:— Should you try to fix your parents (or your adult kids)? — Does emotional connection get harder the bigger your family gets? — How do you apologize to your kids without losing your authority as a parent?Barb — who's spent 40+ years in therapy and recovery — breaks down the fix/control/compare trap that keeps most families stuck, why apologizing to your kids is actually a power move when done right, and what it really means to "let go" of a parent who hurt you (hint: it's not what the internet tells you).Michelle brings the adult-child perspective — including the quiet role reversal that happens when you start parenting your own parents, and why that's more common (and more complicated) than anyone admits. In this episode:The fix/control/compare framework Barb uses dailyWhy big families often produce invisible kids — and what that costs themHow to apologize to your child without becoming a doormatWhat "letting go" of a difficult parent actually looks likeWhy your parents were "raised by cavemen" — and why that context changes everythingSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We'd love to hear from you. Send us fan mail!Role clarity is the most underleveraged driver of leadership performance, and most organizations aren't building it. In this episode of Shedding the Corporate Bitch, executive coach Bernadette Boas sits down with Jackson Lynch, founder of Talent Sherpa, to examine why talented people consistently underperform when the architecture around them is broken. Drawing on W. Edwards Deming's research that 94% of performance problems are systemic, not personal, Jackson makes a compelling case that organizations have been investing in the wrong place. The conversation moves from theory to practice quickly. Jackson breaks down what role architecture actually means: defining five to seven outcomes for any role so that everyone in the system, the incumbent, their manager, their peers upstream and downstream, knows exactly what winning looks like. Without that, accountability becomes blame, engagement flatlines, and even your highest-potential leaders are flying blind. For HR leaders, this episode reframes the function itself. Jackson challenges the compliance-first model that most human capital teams operate within and argues that the real job is to identify talent constraints before the strategy is executed, not after things go sideways. What You Will LearnWhy 94% of performance problems are architectural, not personal, and what that means for how you develop leadersHow to define the 5–7 outcomes that tell any role what winning looks likeWhy decision rights must be directly tied to accountability and what breaks when they aren'tThe difference between accountability (backward blame) and reliability (forward ownership) — and which one actually produces resultsHow to use a talent portfolio optimization model to put the right people in the highest-impact rolesWhy HR's shift from compliance partner to business constraint solver changes organizational performanceHow auditing your calendar reveals whether you are leading strategically or managing noiseEpisode Chapters [00:00 — Welcome & Why Leadership Architecture Matters More Than Talent02:00 — The Biggest Leadership Misconception: It's the System, Not the Person03:00 — What Role Architecture Actually Means — Outcomes, Decision Rights & Boundary Conditions05:00 — Role Clarity in Practice: Defining What Winning Looks Like07:00 — Reframing Accountability as Reliability — and Why It Changes Everything08:00 — The AI Fog Problem: Why Automating Unclear Roles Scales the Problem10:00 — The Real Cost of Not Defining Outcomes: Opportunity Loss13:00 — How to Drive Accountability Without Blame16:00 — Why Leaders Stay Stuck in Tasks: Dopamine, Busyness & the Arsonist Problem18:00 — The Talent Portfolio Optimization Model vs. Traditional Succession Planning21:00 — How to Sequence Talent Decisions for Maximum Business Impact23:00 — How HR and Business Leaders Should Partner on Talent Strategy29:00 — Moving Your Team From Busy to Impactful32:00 — Nobody Gets Overwhelmed Knowing What Winning Looks Like33:00 — Audit Your Calendar: The One Move That Changes Everything35:00 — Where to Find Jackson Lynch & Talent SherpaAbout the Guest Jackson Lynch is the founder of Talent Sherpa, where he works with CEOs and executive teams to build the role clarity, decision rights, and outcome-defined accountability structures that drive business performance. Small group instruction is a common part of math classrooms—but when it comes time to actually sit down with a group of students, many teachers are left wondering what they should be doing. Should you reteach the lesson? Provide more practice? Or try something completely different? The answer isn't about creating a whole new lesson. Instead, effective tier 2 instruction is about helping students access the same rigorous math as their peers—but with the right supports in place. By using formative assessment to understand where students are along the concrete, representational, and abstract continuum, teachers can provide targeted scaffolds that move students forward. The key is not lowering expectations, but removing barriers so every student can engage with the learning. In this episode, you'll explore:What tier 2 math instruction should (and shouldn't) look likeWhy small group time isn't about reteaching the same lessonHow to use the CRA (concrete, representational, abstract) model effectivelyWhat it means to provide “access” to grade-level mathHow to decide when students are ready to move onThe role of high-quality instructional materials and manipulativesIf you've ever wondered what to actually do during small group time in math, this episode will give you a clear and practical way to support students without lowering expectations. We built a simple Math Coherence Compass to help district and school leaders make aligned decisions around math—without adding another initiative. Many people living with depression aren't trying to “be happy.” They're just trying to make it to tomorrow. In this deeply honest episode of Normalize The Conversation, Francesca Reicherter sits down with therapist and author Katie (You're On Fire, It's Fine) to talk openly about suicidality, self-harm, emotional sensitivity, and what it actually means to live with depression — not just recover from it. This conversation explores the emotional weight of birthdays and holidays, the pressure to look okay, and the reality that someone can laugh, function, and still be struggling to stay alive.Katie shares from both lived experience and professional insight, explaining how self-harm can become a survival strategy when emotions feel overwhelming — not an attention-seeking behavior. Together, they unpack why invalidating responses like “be positive,” “get over it,” or “you seem fine” can deepen shame and isolation, even when they're well-intentioned.This episode also speaks directly to parents and loved ones. Katie explains why fear often drives reactive responses, how shame shows up in families, and what supportive language actually looks like when someone is suicidal or self-harming. You'll learn why asking “What do you need right now?” can be more powerful than trying to fix the pain — and how learning someone's emotional language can change the entire relationship.Key topics include:What chronic suicidality really feels likeWhy depression isn't just sadnessHow self-harm functions as emotional regulationEmotional validation vs. toxic positivitySupporting loved ones without escalating crisisLiving a life worth living with depressionThis episode is for you if you've ever felt misunderstood, “too emotional,” or exhausted by trying to appear okay — or if you love someone who is struggling and don't know how to help.

Yo Quiero Dinero: A Personal Finance Podcast For the Modern Latina

You know the good girl. She follows the rules, makes everybody proud, does everything she's supposed to do. She is me, and I have a feeling she might be you too. This episode was inspired by a recent keynote I gave in California, and I'm bringing it to the podcast because we don't talk about this enough: what it actually costs you to keep playing by everyone else's rules. We're going deep on the cultural conditioning that keeps women — especially Latinas — playing small, the moment I got laid off at 27 and felt relief instead of grief, and the solo trip to Puerto Rico that completely rearranged my life.If you've ever felt the tension between who you are and who you've been expected to be, this one is for you.WE GET INTO:The question you need to sit with: has your ambition ever felt like too much?Growing up in a Latino household where stability was the whole planGetting laid off at 27 — and why it felt like freedom, not failureWhy entrepreneurship doesn't fit our cultural script (and why that's okay)The conditioning that keeps women dimming their lightThe lie we keep getting fed: that wanting more is selfishMy solo trip to Puerto Rico and the question that changed everythingChoosing alignment over approval — and what that actually looks likeWhy being the first also means being the blueprintKEY TAKEAWAYS:Security is an illusion. Jobs are not guaranteed — so if nothing's guaranteed anyway, why are you playing small?Your visibility is not arrogance. It is leadership. Full stop. When women make money, everything changes. Ambition isn't selfish — it's the most generous thing you can do.The people questioning you aren't villains. They're just scared. Their definition of success was built around survival.Stop asking "what should I do?" What if AI isn't saving you time…Not because it's not powerful enough, but because you're using it the exact same way as everyone else?If you've ever opened ChatGPT, asked it to write something, and thought “this is going to make everything easier”… only to spend the next 20 minutes fixing it, you're not alone. And you're not doing it wrong. But you are missing the bigger shift.Because right now, most business owners are using AI to speed up the first draft. And that helps. But it doesn't actually change how you operate. You're still making every decision. You're still editing everything. You're still carrying the mental load.Which means you're still the bottleneck. In this episode of Rocky Mountain Marketing, I'm kicking off a four part series on AI, and we're starting with the shift most people have not made yet.The difference between using AI as a content tool… and using AI like a CEO.Because those are two very different things. One gives you more to manage. The other gives you your time back.In this episode, I walk through:Why AI feels helpful but not transformativeWhat “ask and receive” mode actually looks likeWhy most AI generated content feels genericThe real reason business owners still feel overwhelmedHow AI should support execution, not just outputBecause the goal is not more content. It's more capacity.Timestamps[00:00:00] – Why AI Isn't Saving You Time (Yet)[00:01:30] – Using AI Like a CEO vs Just a Tool[00:03:00] – Why AI Isn't Reducing Your Workload[00:04:30] – Shift: From Content Creation to Business Support[00:06:00] – Your Real Bottleneck: Capacity, Not Ideas[00:10:00] – Build Leverage Instead of Doing Everything Yourself[00:11:00] – What AI Support Looks Like for Business Owners[00:12:00] – Start Here: Your Anti-To-Do List Strategy[00:13:00] – From AI Beginner to Strategic Operator[00:14:00] – Next Step: Train AI to Think Like YouBefore you open AI again, do this first.Make a list of three things you do every single week that you never want to do again. Not someday. Not when you hire a team.Right now. That's where AI should start helping.Because AI is not here to make you faster at doing everything. It's here to help you stop doing the wrong things entirely.Learn more about Katie and Next Step Social & Podcasting:Speaking: https://katiebrinkley.com/Website: https://www.nextstepsocial.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiebrinkleyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/@rockymountainmarketingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkatiebrinkley/ Hosted on Acast. This week on The Worth Loving Podcast, relationship coach Keana W. Mitchell breaks down two of the most confusing and often overlooked forms of betrayal in modern relationships: emotional affairs and micro‑cheating. These aren't always loud, obvious, or dramatic — sometimes they start quietly, subtly, and almost innocently. But their impact can be just as painful and just as damaging as physical infidelity. In this episode, Keana explains the difference between these two forms of boundary‑crossing behavior, how to spot the early signs, and why they matter. Drawing from the research of leading psychologists like Dr. John Gottman, Dr. Shirley Glass, and Esther Perel, she breaks down how emotional affairs form, what micro‑cheating looks like, and how both can erode trust and emotional safety in a relationship. You'll also hear a recap of last week's episode on deciding whether to stay or leave after infidelity, plus a deep dive into Dr. Shirley Glass's powerful Walls and Windows Theory — a framework that explains how emotional affairs develop and how couples can begin to rebuild trust.Whether you're healing from betrayal, trying to understand your partner's behavior, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and practical guidance.

Buried in the writings of a first-century Jewish philosopher is a description of a community that most Christians have never heard of. A group of men and women living on the outskirts of Alexandria, Egypt who abandoned everything, their wealth, their status, their former lives, to pursue one thing: a vision of God's light. They were called the Therapeutae. And the women among them, known as the Therapeutrides, were not silent observers. They were philosophers. They were mystics. They were equal participants in the spiritual life. For centuries, their story has been overlooked, misunderstood, and even claimed by early Christian writers as their own. Then Dr. Joan Taylor, one of the most respected scholars in the world, traveled to Egypt and found the place where they lived.Dr. Joan Taylor is Professor Emerita of Christian Origins and Second Temple Judaism at King's College London, a Fulbright scholar, former Visiting Lecturer at Harvard Divinity School, and the author of what has been called the best commentary ever written on Philo's account of this community. In this episode, she takes us inside the world of the Therapeutae, reveals the political firestorm in Alexandria that forced Philo to write about them, and exposes the powerful role of women that history tried to bury. This is one of those conversations that will change the way you read your Bible. In this episode you will learn:What Jewish life looked like in first-century Alexandria, one of the most important and overlooked cities in the biblical worldWho Philo of Alexandria was and why his testimony is so significant for understanding Judaism and early ChristianityThe brutal conflict between Jews and Greeks in Alexandria and how it shaped everything Philo wrote about the TherapeutaeWho the Therapeutae actually were and what their radical daily life of contemplation, fasting, and Scripture study looked likeWhy the Therapeutae are completely distinct from the Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls communityThe mystical spiritual practices that drove this community, including trance-like experiences of divine lightThe Therapeutrides: the women in this community who were educated philosophers and full participants in the spiritual lifeHow the existence of these women should reshape the way we read New Testament passages about women in the early churchDr. Taylor's trip to Egypt where she identified the actual location of this community near Lake MareotisWhat happened when early Christianity collided with the Therapeutae in AlexandriaCheck out Dr. Taylor's books: Women Remembered: Jesus' Female Disciples - https://a.co/d/0bJltOiA Jewish Women Philosophers of First-Century Alexandria: Philo's 'Therapeutae' Reconsidered - https://a.co/d/0hXKfwoSSubscribe and follow The Dig In Podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thejohnnyova Follow all things Johnny Ova: https://johnnyova.comGrab Johnny's book, The Revelation Reset: https://a.co/d/hiUkW8H

Lola outlines a deliberate, multi-step hiring process built to eliminate desperate decisions and reduce candidate ghosting. It begins with a focused 5-10 minute phone screen designed to evaluate attitude, communication skills, and professionalism before investing time in in-person interviews. Once hired, new team members go through a structured two-week onboarding experience that intentionally integrates them into the shop's culture and operations, complete with personalized touches and cross-training across the team. To establish clarity and transparency, Lola shares her “no gatekeeping” philosophy: providing candidates with a legally reviewed employee handbook before a formal offer is made. She also explains how to handle HR documentation and unemployment claims using a “no feelings, just facts” approach, relying on accurate records, clear timelines, and policies tied directly to the signed handbook. The result? Intentional systems that protect the culture, the employees, and the long-term health of the business. What is it really like to stay in a traditional homestay in Bhutan? In this episode of the Winging It Travel Podcast, I'm coming to you from rural Bhutan, where I sit down with Ama Om — the owner of a traditional Bhutanese homestay located in a small village outside Punakha. With the help of a translator, Ama Om shares her life story and what it truly means to welcome travellers into her home.Ama Om has been hosting guests for over a decade, offering far more than just accommodation. We talk about daily village life in Bhutan, balancing farming with tourism, cooking traditional food, caring for animals, and preserving a way of life that's slowly disappearing due to modernisation. This conversation explores Bhutanese Buddhist beliefs, especially the idea of karmic connections — the belief that people don't arrive in our lives by accident. Ama Om explains why hosting guests brings her so much joy and why she believes homestays offer the most authentic way to experience Bhutanese culture. You'll also hear about:What daily life in a rural Bhutanese village looks likeWhy homestays are important for local livelihoods in BhutanTraditional Bhutanese food, farming, and household skillsHot stone baths, milking cows, making cheese, and cooking togetherWhy staying outside cities like Thimphu and Paro offers a deeper travel experienceYou might notice my voice is a little rough in this episode — I was battling a cough and cold during the recording — but this story was far too special not to share. If you're planning a trip to Bhutan, curious about authentic travel experiences, or interested in staying in a traditional homestay, this episode offers a rare and honest insight into rural Bhutanese life and the people who make it unforgettable.
