I think my superpower, if I have one, is that I will lean into things that scare me. I may appear fearless to other people, but I'm not. Trust me! I feel the fear, but I'm never going to run away from fear. I will lean into fear.Author's note: North Carolina, especially Asheville, but also including the broader region, was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Her latest project, "Open Secret," delves into a difficult subject—systemic child abuse and the corruption that allowed it to continue in North Carolina schools. Despite the heartbreaking topic, Kerry finds and showcases the resilience of individuals fighting to make a difference.Kerry's journey with this project began unexpectedly when she moved to North Carolina. Initially hesitant to take on another heavy subject, Kerry ultimately decided to lend her talents to highlight a story of immense courage. “The film really is about the courage to challenge something in your community that isn't working despite this being detrimental potentially to your own self,” she shared. What makes this project truly unique is Kerry's decision to raise funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. This approach allows people from all over the country to participate in the movement against abuse in schools. “Allowing people everywhere to invest in this film is a way of helping to maximize your audience, maximize the impact, maximize the reach,” she explained. By involving the community, Kerry aims to spark a national conversation and prevent future tragedies. This opportunity to invest in a project that combines social impact with powerful storytelling is rare, and Kerry's passion shines through every frame of her work. If you're moved by this story, consider joining the effort to support change—just as Kerry has done.tl;dr:* In today's episode, Kerry David shared her experience transitioning from working at Paramount Pictures and with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman to starting her own production company and directing impactful documentaries.* Kerry discussed her latest project, "Open Secret," which explores systemic abuse in North Carolina schools and the courage of community members who fought against the corruption that enabled it.* Kerry emphasized her superpower of leaning into fear, recounting a challenging decision to change filming locations for safety during her previous project, demonstrating her ability to balance courage with prudence.* The episode highlighted Kerry's initiative in founding the nonprofit Over and Above Africa, which supports anti-poaching efforts and raises awareness through film.* Kerry explained her decision to use crowdfunding on WeFunder for her latest film to involve and empower communities nationwide to tackle systemic issues beyond North Carolina. How to Develop Leaning into Fear As a SuperpowerKerry's superpower is her ability to “lean into fear.” She doesn't ignore or try to eliminate fear—instead, she faces it head-on, refusing to let it control her decisions or actions. This willingness to confront fear, rather than shy away from it, allows Kerry to push boundaries and take on challenging projects that make a difference in the world. One powerful example of Kerry leaning into fear came during the production of her last film. She and her crew were scheduled to travel from South Africa to Uganda, but just days before, a nearby kidnapping involving three British citizens left her in a state of intense fear for her team's safety. Despite initially wanting to go ahead, Kerry made the difficult decision to pivot and film in Vietnam instead. This decision, rooted in both courage and concern for her crew's safety, ultimately kept them out of harm's way.To develop this superpower, Kerry suggests several actionable strategies:* Evaluate the consequences of not acting. Consider how avoiding a fearful situation could lead to missed opportunities or negative outcomes.* Honor your moral compass. When you know something is the right thing to do, face the fear and act anyway.* Start with small acts of courage. Practicing courage when the stakes are low helps build confidence for larger challenges.* Accept that fear is normal. Understand that feeling fear doesn't mean you're weak—it's an opportunity to show strength by moving forward despite it.By following Kerry's example and advice, you can make leaning into fear a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Performance anxiety is one the leading reasons athletes struggle to consistently perform at their capabilities. Learning how to channel your nerves is key to performing at your best when it matters most. Unfortunately most athletes focus on the threats of high-pressure situations. Pressure can Provoke a State of Fear As a result the pressure provokes a fear state that leaves the athlete tense, overthinking, and underperforming. Here are 3 other common reasons athletes don't perform under pressure: Zoomed In on the Context Overly focused on the context and making the results seem more important than they are is a sure fire way to feel the burden of the results weigh heavily on your mind. Survive Over Thrive Are you focused on not screwing up or are you focused on going out there and having an impact? This is the difference between a fear mindset vs attack mindset. Need To, Have To, Should Mindset Creating an unhealthy relationship with your desired results often leads to a decrease in performance. The sport culture perpetuates this language with coaches often saying “this is a must win game” but this narrative often provokes the fear state. The good news is you can overcome these limiting mindsets by following the 3 steps below - as a result you will be able to perform at your best when it matters most. Step 1: Plan to Cope Coping planning is essential to stress management for all areas of life. And it works particularly well for handling high pressure situations. In short - Planning to Cope is simply what it means. You are planning for how you will respond (cope) when a stressor (pressure) is presented. It is like studying for a test - it works way better when you study before the test - not trying to figure it out in the thick of it. Step 2: Mental Rehearsal Most athletes think imagery and mental preparation is only for focusing on what you want to do and being positive. But one of the best benefits of imagery is to mentally rehearse how you plan to cope with stressors. By mentally rehearsing how you are going to respond to a pressure situation makes you way more likely to respond that way. So not only do you want to study and clarify how you want to respond then you want to hammer that into your brain. Repetition is the mother of learning! Step 3: Measure Your Progress By getting steps 1 and 2 down pat you are well on your way to start performing at your best when it matters most. This step helps lock it in and ensure you really hone your ability to perform under pressure. Here is example of what this looks like: 1. Identify What to Measure: E.g., I want to zoom out, feel relaxed, ready and excited before performances. 2. Track Your Progress: Reflect on that number after each game and see it go up! 3. Adjust & Learn: When the number dips or when it stops rising, reflect on what is holding you back and refer back to Step 1 - find which coping planning strategy will help the most. This also could be a key time to getting a mental performance coach to be a third party and help you improve faster and more effectively. I hope you found this helpful. Let us know if you have any questions. If you know anyone that could benefit from this podcast - please share it with them.
Lessons from their lives. Talk 1. Abraham Welcome to the first talk in a new series where we’ll be looking at Bible characters and seeing what lessons we can learn from certain aspects of their lives. Of course, the Bible itself sets a clear precedent for doing this. 1 Corinthians 10:11 teaches us that the things that happened to God’s people in the past were written down as examples for our instruction. So we can learn from their lives. We learn from their experience. Today our subject is Abraham. We remember him mainly for the fact that, although his wife Sarah was barren, God promised to bless him, to make of him a great nation, and that through him all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Genesis 15:6 tells us that Abraham believed God and it was ‘credited to him as righteousness’. It’s through Abraham’s greatest descendant, the Lord Jesus Christ, that God’s blessing of salvation has become available to all the world, to all who will believe. So Abraham became not only the physical father of the Jewish nation but the spiritual father of all those, whether Jew or Gentile, who believe as he believed. So in the New Testament it’s Abraham’s faith that’s remembered most of all. But that does not mean that Abraham was never afraid. In fact he had a very real tendency to fear! But surely faith is the opposite of fear. How can a man of faith be fearful? That’s what we’ll be looking at today, and we’ll learn from the example of Abraham how it’s possible to have faith despite your fears. We’ll start in Genesis 15:1 where God says: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward (NIV) Why did God say, Do not be afraid? Because he knew that Abraham had a tendency to fear. And in fact most of God’s people have the same problem! That’s why again and again in the Bible we read that God says, Do not be afraid. In this talk we’re going to look at: Abraham’s tendency to fear God’s response to it Abraham’s response to God and seek to learn how all this applies to us. Abraham’s Tendency to Fear As we’ve already seen, Abraham was an obedient servant of God to whom God had promised great blessings. In Genesis 12:1-3 we read that God said to Abraham: Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. And verse 4 tells us that Abraham left, as the LORD had told him. BUT this did not prevent him being afraid Look at Genesis 12:10-13 where Abraham goes to live in Egypt because of a famine. As they’re about to enter Egypt, he says to his wife Sarai: I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you. And in chapter 20 when Abraham is living temporarily in Gerar, he makes the same request, this time with potentially disastrous consequences. The fear that he might be killed so that others might take Sarah as his wife was clearly on ongoing weakness. But despite this tendency to fear Abraham was capable of behaving very bravely In Genesis 14:11-16 we read how four kings had formed an alliance and had seized Abraham’s nephew Lot and carried him off with all his possessions. When Abraham heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out his men and went after them. He attacked them at night, routed them, and recovered all Lot’s possessions and brought him back together with the women and the other people who were with him. So in chapter 14 Abraham has acted bravely and won a great victory. Why then is God telling him in chapter 15 not to be afraid? At first sight there are two possible reasons for Abraham’s fear: (a) the four kings taking revenge over Lot’s rescue? or (b) that he would never have his own son to be his heir This is made clear at the beginning of chapter 15. 1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." 2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." 4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Note: The fear that the four kings might take revenge is the fear that something bad might happen. The fear that he would never have his own son to be his heir is the fear that something good might not happen. We can fear these things even when God has spoken to us! (12:1ff) (a) e.g. first building project - financial difficulties (b) principalship - might not get elected What have you been afraid of? God’s Response to Abraham’s fear He spoke to Abraham (15:1) After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward’ How comforting the Word of God is to us when we’re afraid (Fred Durrant) He promised to be Abraham’s shield In response to the fear that something bad might happen God himself would be Abraham’s protection. I am your shield. But not only Abraham’s! He is the shield for Abraham’s descendants too! Deut. 33:29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper... Cf. Psalms 3:3, 18:35, 28:7, 33:20, 84:11, 115:9, 10, 11, 119:114, 144:2, Prov. 30:5. But note especially Psalm 91 Note especially Verse 4 which says His faithfulness will be your shield. 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. 9 If you make the Most High your dwelling-- even the LORD, who is my refuge-- 10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation." So God spoke to Abraham, he promised to be his shield. And thirdly: He promised to be Abraham’s very great reward In response to the fear that something good might not happen, God promised him many blessings: a son (v4) multitudes of descendants (v5) a land (vv 7,18) BUT what really mattered was that GOD himself was Abraham’s very great reward. I am your ... reward. God himself is our reward: in heaven - yes but we have the Holy Spirit as a foretaste now - in prayer, communion, fellowship with him Abraham’s Response to God He believed! (v 6) - and it was credited to him as righteousness (cf. Rom. 4:3) All who believe are the spiritual descendants of Abraham. Romans 4:16-17, Galatians 3:9, 29. God is OUR shield and OUR reward. The shield of faith (Eph 6:16) will extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one! But didn’t Ps. 91:4 say that God’s faithfulness is our shield? Yes. Perhaps Eph 6:16 should be translated faithfulness. But what is the source of our faith? God’s faithfulness! Our faith is our response to God’s faithfulness. The Word of God is a record of God’s faithfulness. That’s why faith comes by hearing it (Romans 10:17). Conclusion Perhaps at times we are all rather like Abraham. Sometimes we are capable of great courage, yet most of us have a tendency to fear. Perhaps that's why God says so often in his word, FEAR NOT But he knows about our fear. He promises to be our shield and very great reward. He is faithful to his promises And his faithfulness is the source of our faith. Take your eyes off your faith and fix them on God's faithfulness. He himself is our reward. To have Jesus is enough! In him all God's promises find their fulfilment (2 Cor. 1:20)
Most people do not like the sound of their own voice. It is natural and quite common. Don't let it get in your way. When we hear ourselves, the Impostor Syndrome starts to kick in. On a coaching call the other night, we were talking about reviewing your podcast in order to improve. The only way to improve your content is to listen to your shows like a listener. My client said she finds it difficult to listen to her podcast. She said it is uncomfortable. NATURAL It is quite natural to dislike the sound of your own voice when hearing a recorded version of it. When you talk, the bones in your head vibrate adding to the timbrance and qualities you naturally hear. When you hear a recording of your voice, those vibrations are absent. The bones in your head aren't vibrating. That causes your voice to sound different to you. The natural bone vibrations also make your voice bounce up and down like a cheesy DJ. You start doing some unnecessary acrobatics with your voice when you are wearing headphones. The bone vibrations combined with the enclosed nature of your headphones cause you to hear the big announcer voice. It is much different than the way your listener hears it. You tend to speak in ways you don't normally speak in everyday conversation when you are wearing headphones. FEAR As we listen to ourselves, we think about being judged. It is said that the most common fear is the fear of public speaking. The thing we fear most is not speaking but humiliation. We don't want to make fools of ourselves. Your inner critic never congratulates you. Your voice reminds you of the critics. The more you listen to your show, the more comfortable you will be with your voice. There are seven steps you can take to make your voice sound more natural and get you on the path to enjoying the sound of your voice. 1. NOTES The way you write is much different than the way you speak. You use different words. Your sentence structure is different. The flow of the written word simply differs greatly from the spoken word. As you are speaking, use notes instead of a full script. You will sound much more comfortable when speaking from the heart rather than speaking from the script. The flow and structure of your sentences will be much more natural. Make note of the important points to include in your podcast. Hit those points within your show without reading it word for word. 2. ONE PERSON You will sound much more natural when you speak to one person rather than a group of people. Audio is a very personal medium. People are using listening with headphones. The only reason people listen to audio is for companionship. They don't want to be alone when they are doing whatever it is they are doing. Talk to her. When your listener is listening to your podcast, she wants to feel like you are talking to directly with her. If you include a call-to-action in your podcast, you want your listener to act upon that request. If you are talking to a group of people, she can easily think someone else will take action and she will do nothing. Instead, speak right to her. If you are speaking directly with her, she will begin to develop a friendship with you. She will begin to feel like she knows you. She will also feel like you care about her personally. When you speak to one person, your delivery will sound much more conversational and less like a lecture. This will help you become more comfortable with your own voice. 3. ONE CUP Your voice will sound different to you when you listen to your voice through headphones. The enclosed space of the headphones amplifies your voice. The sound of your voice is also changed by the audio processing. The bones in your head vibrate differently when using headphones. To help you sound more natural, remove one ear of your headphones. Only use one side to monitor what's going on with the audio. With only one cup on your ear, you are able to hear your voice more naturally with the free ear. You will also hear your voice in the context of the ambient room noise rather than through the vacuum of the headphones. 4. TURN IT DOWN If you are wearing only one cup of your headphones, turning the volume down will also help you sound more natural. With a lower headphone volume, you will hear your natural voice better. You won't be fooled by the dominance of the headphone sound. Use should your headphones to make sure you hear the other audio included in your podcast. Make sure you can hear your music bed, intro, guest and other audio. However, make sure your headphones are not giving you a false image of your voice. 5. SING-SONGY Speak naturally. Do not attempt to sound like other announcers you have heard. Be yourself. Have you heard those old school DJs that are really sing-songy? They sound like they are puking or singing some bad, over-inflected high school musical? That's what we don't want. When you speak like an announcer, you begin to stretch and emphasize words unnaturally. Your speech begins to unnaturally bounce. When you listen to your recorded voice like this, you sound like a puky disc jockey or used car salesman on a bad television commercial. Both lack warmth. They are hard to believe. Instead, speak conversationally. Use a natural pace. Don't use unnecessary emphasis on words. It might help if you speak like you are on the telephone just talking with one person on the other end. These steps will help your voice sound more natural. 6. PERFORM This may sound counter to what I just said, but you need to perform. Put yourself in the right frame of mind with visions. People can hear your smile. You need to get there before the recording begins. Work from pictures. All communication is visual. Envision in your mind a specific time and place that makes you happy. Actually describe it out loud. This will change your state of mind. There is a philosophy in acting that the performance begins before you break the wings. That means actors get into character before they actually step onto stage. They take steps to get in the right frame of mind before the performance begins. Do the same for your podcast. Get there before you hit record. 7. REVIEW The best way to become a more natural speaker is to review your show often. When you listen to your show on a regular basis, you will become much more accustomed to hearing your voice in a recorded setting. You dislike your voice, because you are not used to hearing it outside of your own head. The more you hear your voice, the more natural it will sound. It is possible to overcome the dislike of your own voice. You simply have to take steps to conquer it. It will take time to begin liking the sound of your voice. Be patient. Remove some of the annoying qualities of your speech. Use notes, speak to one person and get rid of the sing-songy pattern. Polish up the product first. Next, adjust the way your record. Use only one cup of your headphones. Turn the volume down a bit to hear your voice in its natural setting. Make minor adjustments until you get comfortable. Finally, review your show. When listening to your own voice becomes habit, your recorded voice will sound much more natural to you. Review your show often. How do I know when I am acting out of Fear? As we move deeper and deeper into this pandemic experience we are confronted by the day, by the hour and by the minute with information, misinformation and opinion that seems to; at every turn, stimulate fear. Knowing when you are operating from Fear instead of Love can make navigating through this transformational time much less traumatic and stressful. Our mind is an amazing thing; and quite frankly, also a deadly part of the human experience. The mission of the mind is to support whatever is your predominant energy. What that mean is in every situation we have a perspective- based on our beliefs, training, upbringing, life experience, trauma, etc. When we are confronted with a big event, like the Corona virus, and we’re confronted with the potential ramifications of that event on healthcare, finances, food, family and money, all of those things that create our perspective are also stimulated. You could call it the perfect storm. We deeply appreciate your support! Please subscribe to our YouTube page and like us on Facebook using the links provided. We would love to hear from you.
