In the past 6 months, one sector we have enjoyed working with is teachers and education. Educators do an amazing job of looking after our kids by providing them with care, attention, guidance, support, and education. If I ask you who was that teacher who made a difference in your life, that teacher who went the extra mile, made an investment in you - who comes to mind? Teachers are dedicated to their craft and despite research showing educators face an array of challenges in staff shortages, high stress, poor sleep, and more. Our programs are designed to support educators equipped with practical strategies to address the physical and mental demands of their roles. We want to give educators an oxygen mask and teach them to put it on first, before others.Today's episode is a recording of a keynote presentation Andrew recently did for NSW Primary Principals Association (NSW PPA). It is a blend of science, and strategies, addressing the challenges educators and principals face, and a bit of fun in the process. In this episode, Andrew talks about:8:30 Telling people how your day went, the importance of being ready for change and kids having play as such a big part of their lives.13:00 Getting your 10,000 steps per day, improving your resting heart rate and living to 100 years old.16:30 The IOS upgrade, making sure to recover after stress and how to optimise your chronobiology.21:45 Social contagion theory, pushing everything to be faster, higher, stronger and working micro recovery breaks into your day.27:10 The 3x3x3 downregulation format, humming to calm yourself and adding some grounding to your day.31:00 The physiological sigh, using box breathing to calm down and using movement to fire up.35:05 How Tim Tszyu uses imagery in his boxing career, why optimism is so important and using your reticular activating system to train yourself to be more optimistic.39:35 Noticing your break up song everywhere you go, the benefits of optimism and the famous optimistic/pessimistic nun study. One of the hallmarks of Mentally Toughness is the ability to perform well under pressure.  Whether you play golf or cricket, or enjoy gymnastics or netball.  It's the same in your job if you have to stand up and deliver presentations at work. So why do many people struggle with this? Why does thriving under pressure separate the great from the good on occasions? Many things can prevent people to be able to perform in the manner they'd like to when the pressure is on for a host of reasons, including: Performance anxiety A failure to learn from past mistakes Focusing on the wrong things Making practice sessions too comfortable Personality traits, for example your Mental Toughness Off field pressures Today's short bite taken from episode 94 of Demystifying Mental Toughness, touches on this topic where Professor Adam Nicholls shares with you a few ideas to be able to improve the way that you perform under pressure.  Enjoy tuning in! Key Learning Points: Mental Toughness is about an athlete's ability to be able to perform well under pressure, so that their performance is not adversely affected by pressure. Typical signs that someone struggles with pressure are that their routines change, that they speed up or slow down or that they fail to carry out tactics and get caught up in emotion. Experience is an important factor in making good decisions under pressure. Simulating pressure in training and practice is another helpful approach to take. Seeking to improve your self-awareness, being open-minded to learn is also essential so that you can make smarter decisions at critical times. How to Overcome Performance Anxiety

Performance anxiety is one of the leading reasons athletes struggle to perform when it matters most.  In this podcast, we want to show you how to break through the limiting beliefs and cultural norms that perpetuate performance anxiety.  This is a follow up to the How to Perform Under Pressure video recently posted.  Here are the main concepts we unpacked to help athletes overcome performance anxiety: Building Up the Context Athletes, coaches, parents, and fans alike often attach too much meaning to the event or game.  Athletes then build up the context in their mind and get too hyped up for a particular opponent, ‘pressure' situation, or a ‘must win' game.  As a result, the context becomes overwhelming and the athlete mentally falls apart, they panic or hesitate on the field of play, and choke under the pressure.  In last year's Stanley Cup final, Tampa Bay Lightning all-world defenceman Victor Hedman was asked about how he and his teammates are able to maintain a high level of play in their third straight Cup finals. His response was “easy, we never let the moment be bigger than any one particular play”.  This was a brilliant response.  The ability to detach from the context and be dialed into the task at hand is the key to being totally present.  This mindset allows them to have trust and faith, not only in their own abilities, but those of their teammates as well. It's no surprise they have been the Gold Standard for culture and excellence for the better part of a decade.

Performance anxiety is one the leading reasons athletes struggle to consistently perform at their capabilities. Learning how to channel your nerves is key to performing at your best when it matters most. Unfortunately most athletes focus on the threats of high-pressure situations.  Pressure can Provoke a State of Fear As a result the pressure provokes a fear state that leaves the athlete tense, overthinking, and underperforming. Here are 3 other common reasons athletes don't perform under pressure: Zoomed In on the Context Overly focused on the context and making the results seem more important than they are is a sure fire way to feel the burden of the results weigh heavily on your mind. Survive Over Thrive Are you focused on not screwing up or are you focused on going out there and having an impact? This is the difference between a fear mindset vs attack mindset.  Need To, Have To, Should Mindset Creating an unhealthy relationship with your desired results often leads to a decrease in performance. The sport culture perpetuates this language with coaches often saying “this is a must win game” but this narrative often provokes the fear state. The good news is you can overcome these limiting mindsets by following the 3 steps below - as a result you will be able to perform at your best when it matters most. Step 1: Plan to Cope Coping planning is essential to stress management for all areas of life. And it works particularly well for handling high pressure situations. In short - Planning to Cope is simply what it means. You are planning for how you will respond (cope) when a stressor (pressure) is presented. It is like studying for a test - it works way better when you study before the test - not trying to figure it out in the thick of it. Step 2: Mental Rehearsal Most athletes think imagery and mental preparation is only for focusing on what you want to do and being positive. But one of the best benefits of imagery is to mentally rehearse how you plan to cope with stressors. By mentally rehearsing how you are going to respond to a pressure situation makes you way more likely to respond that way. So not only do you want to study and clarify how you want to respond then you want to hammer that into your brain. Repetition is the mother of learning!  Step 3: Measure Your Progress By getting steps 1 and 2 down pat you are well on your way to start performing at your best when it matters most. This step helps lock it in and ensure you really hone your ability to perform under pressure. Here is example of what this looks like: 1. Identify What to Measure: E.g., I want to zoom out, feel relaxed, ready and excited before performances.  2. Track Your Progress: Reflect on that number after each game and see it go up! 3. Adjust & Learn: When the number dips or when it stops rising, reflect on what is holding you back and refer back to Step 1 - find which coping planning strategy will help the most. This also could be a key time to getting a mental performance coach to be a third party and help you improve faster and more effectively.  I hope you found this helpful. Let us know if you have any questions. If you know anyone that could benefit from this podcast - please share it with them.

I spoke with Senseis Lars Niehaus and Stephan Steyn about karate as a martial art. The discussion covered the purpose and development of karate, the focus of traditional karate, the guiding principles of karate (dojo kun), advice for parents and adult beginners, what it takes to be a good karateka and much more! Sensei Lars Bio: I started karate in or about September 1981 while studying at University in Pietermaritzburg.  I joined the university karate club which was headed up by an instructor called Peter Schoerie who, in turn fell under Sensei Rob Ferriere. My introduction into the martial (and fighting) arts began at age 8 or 9 when my late father, a judoka, took me to boxing at the Hugenote Amateur Boxing Club under the tutelage of the late “Oom” Naas Botes.  Oom Naas was a very strict and hard taskmaster but he loved his boys and taught us good values.  The club was (and still is) situated at the Brixton Recreation Centre in south-western Johannesburg.  I loved boxing. It was during this time that I met Sensei Stan Schmidt at the home of some boyhood friends of mine.  Their father was also a judoka. It was then that the seed was planted that I wanted to do karate and remain involved in the fighting arts scene for the rest of my life. I had no idea how I would get there or anything like that, but I just knew it would happen.  Why I stopped boxing (something I was very upset about) is because I had to go to boarding school in Kwa-Zulu Natal at the age of 11. Fast forward to sometime during 1981 and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Pietermaritzburg Law Library – I was sitting next to another guy studying.  During a short break, we introduced ourselves to one another and he turned out to be Peter Schoerie.  For some reason, the conversation turned to fighting and karate.  I told him that I wanted to start karate and had no idea where.  He told me he was the one to talk to and that is where my karate career started. I was terrible at the beginning.  In fact, when it came time to attempt my grade for 8th kyu (yellow belt) a few months later, Sensei Rob Ferriere – who scared the hell out of me with his Mexican Zapata-style moustache and French-Mauritian accent – I failed.  Sensei Rob's comment “not ready yet…”. I did soldier on and, subsequent to moving to Johannesburg and being told by the late Sensei Derrick Geyer to report to the morning class (Sensei Stan Schmidt's Early Birds class) while I was still a purple belt in 1986, I attained the rank of shodan (first dan) in March 1987. I have continued training over the years and currently hold the rank of Godan (fifth dan) and run my own dojo (school) in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg. Sensei Stephan Bio: Stephan is a Japanese registered 4th Dan (Yondan) instructor in the World Shotokan Karate-do Federation with both national and international competition experience. His karate career spans over 26 years of training with top class senior Shotokan instructors. Highlights of the almost three decades include Shodan grading at the age of 16 (Malcolm Dorfman Sensei), representing South Africa at the KWF World Championships in Norway (2009), being part of the Student National WKF team competing at the student World championships in Slovakia (2012) and receiving Yondan from Hitoshi Kasuya Sensei in 2016.  Stephan teaches at their Potchefstroom dojo with his wife, also a Yondan instructor. They believe in not only teaching the physical aspects of karate but also the use of karate principles to improve each student's abilities and the application of these principles in all areas of life. The dojo kun (training hall rules) - Guiding Principles of Karate: 1) Character Hitotsu, jinkaku kansei ni tsutomeru koto Strive for the perfection of character 2) Sincerity Hitotsu, makoto no michi wo mamoru koto Protect the way of the truth 3) Effort Hitotsu, doryoku no seishin wo yashinau koto Foster the effort of spirit 4) Etiquette Hitotsu, reigi wo omonzuru koto  Respect the principles of etiquette 5) Self control Hitotsu, kekki no yū wo imashimuru koto Guard against impetuous courage “Karate is in your head”- Sensei Rob Ferriere: Some reading on psychology and getting into the “zone”: Karageorghis, C. I., & Terry, P. C. (2011). Inside sport psychology. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics. Evans, C. (2019). Perform Under Pressure. HarperCollins. If you are struggling to perform in competition the way you know that you can, the first thing do to is to get feedback from your coach. Have a meeting with him/her or them and find out what you need to do to improve and bring out your best performances. But what happens if your coach doesn't give you anything concrete that will help you? What do you do then? Because it is easy; * to become lost. * disheartened. * lose motivation. * it feels like a constant struggle. A constant struggle because you don't know what to do because you aren't getting the guidance. This is where we have to change your approach because it will be easy for you to fall into that mental space of; * the coach doesn't like you or, * you are not the coach's favourite or, * the coach prefers the other players or, * you compare yourself to the others in the team. It's time for you to take control back into your game, it's your responsibility to become the athlete you want to become - the best athlete you want to become. This Awareness Plan below is outlined in more detail in the episode - get out your notebook because you are going to need it for this one. 4 Step Awareness Plan 1. What skills are you good at? 2. What skills are you not good at? 3. The skills you are not good at - how do you improve them? 4. Devise a plan - when will you work on them. If you are struggling to perform in competition. If you are losing the motivation and the passion in your sport. If you are getting no direction or guidance. If you don't know how to improve or, How to get into your game rhythm. If you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself to perform and, Wanting to prove yourself because you know you deserve to be there or, When you compete it goes poorly and you become disheartened. Do you find that you crush it in practice? Yet on game day you can't compete at a high level that you know you are capable. It's not that you don't work hard because you do. You work your butt off! But why can't you crush it in competition like you do in practice? There will be a number of reasons however, we are going to focus this one. And that is that you don't practie under pressure. What I mean by that is that you don't simulate pressure experiences that come up during competition therefore you don't know how to deal with it. When you don't know how to deal with pressure situations that arise in competition you don't know how to deal with it. What happens then? * you panic * you choke * you freak out Therefore your performance level drops. This drop in level of performance strems from a series of sequences. Thoughts Feelings Actions Results This is broken down and explained in much greater detail in this episode so make sure you listen to it. However there are two major areas that we need to check in with when dealing with pressure! 1. Mindset - which are your thoughts 2. Emotions - your feelings What else can you do? Practice Pressure Situations! (again this is broken down and explained in greater detail in this episode). 3 Areas To Crush It In Competition 1. Mindset - for competition and during competition. 2. Controlling Emotions - dealing with situations. 3. Practice Pressure Situations - dealing with pressure. If you are struggling with your mindset in your sport. If you freak out under pressure. You get nervous and you are fearing making mistakes. You get paralysed because you are worried about how you will play. You are confident in practice but lose all confidence in matches. You can't make it work in competition like you do in practice. You are so frustrated because you can't understand why you are not playing better than you should. I have put together a FREE VIDEO TRAINING for you. We identify; * your current mindset and beliefs about why you are playing poorly in competition, so that you are not being held back and you are confident. * the type of emotions you are struggling with, * how to cope with pressure situations * design a well crafted plan so that you are crushing it in competition just like you are in practice. https://hankweisingerphd.com/ Performing Under Pressure: The Science of Doing Your Best When It Matters Most How do you perform under pressure? -Can you summon your talent at will? -Can you deliver on a test? -Can you sleep at night? In this episode, Dr. Hank Weisinger discusses: Performing Under Pressure The difference between Stress and Pressure The Anatomy of Choking How pressure affects our thinking Pressure Traps Students are under more pressure than ever before. Here are 7 students who need to listen to this episode. Which one are you? • The High School Student under pressure to meet parental expectations, ace SATs, be accepted by a top school, participate in extracurricular activities, play a sport, instrument or both, get your driver’s license, and find a prom date. • The College Student under pressure to fit into a new environment, make friends, pledge a frat or sorority, constant exams, declare a major, answer parental questions such as “What are you going to do after college? “ get a job, take LSATs, MCATs, GREs, become financially independent and other nightmares. • The Graduate Student under pressure to please professors, publish research, write grants, live cheaply, pass comprehensive exams, and complete a dissertation. • The Law Student, under pressure to excel, works hard to make the law review, present cases, find summer clerkships, learn to think more critically, pass the bar, graduate and enter the grind, and eventually pay back their loans. • The Medical Student under pressure to master organic chemistry, memorize information daily, excel in an internship, perform in do or die moments, cope with death, match for a residency, pay back loans and adapt to the changing business of health care. • The Performing Arts Student under pressure to act, dance or sing for their supper — or try and balance a second job while mastering their craft. • The Adult Student under pressure to readjust to student life, maintain a job, support a family, and finish their degree quickly. Nobody performs better under pressure. Regardless of the task, pressure ruthlessly diminishes our judgment, decision making, attention, dexterity, and performance in every professional and personal arena. In Performing Under Pressure, Drs. Hendrie Weisinger and J.P. Pawliw-Fry introduce us to the concept of pressure management, offering empirically tested short-term and long-term solutions to help us overcome the debilitating effects of pressure. Performing Under Pressure tackles the greatest obstacle to personal success, whether in a sales presentation, at home, on the golf course, interviewing for a job, or performing onstage at Carnegie Hall. Despite sports mythology, no one rises to the occasion under pressure and does better than they do in practice. The reality is pressure makes us do worse and sometimes leads us to fail utterly. But there are things we can do to diminish its effects on our performance. Performing Under Pressure draws on research from more than 12,000 people, and features the latest research from neuroscience and from the frontline experiences of Fortune 500 employees and managers, Navy SEALS, Olympic and other elite athletes, and others. It offers 22 specific strategies each of us can use to reduce pressure in our personal and professional lives and allow us to excel better in whatever we do. Whether you're a corporate manager, a basketball player, or a student preparing for the SAT, Performing Under Pressure will help you do your best when it matters most.
