In this episode we welcome not one but two guests and ask them to talk about their long-time friend and mentor Dave Marsh. Daniel Wolff and Danny Alexander co-edited 2023's Marsh anthology Kick Out the Jams: on the eve of his 75th birthday they reflect on his powerful writing, his impassioned politics and his career from Creem and Rolling Stone to the Rock & Roll (subsequently Rock & Rap) Confidential newsletter he launched in 1983. An audio clip of Dave being interviewed by Daniel for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame takes us back to the former's championing of his Detroit contemporaries the MC5 and the Stooges. Meanwhile pieces about Creem itself and about his friend and frequent biographical subject Bruce Springsteen prompt our guests' amused thoughts on Dave's trenchant opinions and general combativeness.  A 1990 Vox piece about 'The Star-Spangled Banner' leads us to clips from a 1996 audio interview with one of Marsh's many Black music heroes: the sainted Curtis Mayfield. On the 60th anniversary of the Impressions' 'People Get Ready', we talk about the Chicago soul star's songs, politics, guitar-playing — and the sheer wisdom and serenity of the man. (News of the death of Mayfield's old friend and fellow Impression Jerry Butler only reached us the day after this episode was recorded.) After we've paid our respects to Jam drummer Rick Buckler, Jasper quotes from recently-added library interviews with Lil' Kim (1997) and Hipgnosis boss Merck Mercuriadis (2021). Many thanks to special guests Daniel Wolff and Danny Alexander. Kick Out the Jams: Jibes, Barbs, Tributes and Rallying Cries from 35 years of Music Writing by Dave Marsh is published by Simon & Schuster and available now from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Creem Reflects Detroit Rock 'n' Roll, Barry Kramer 1943–1981, Sour Creem, Bruce Springsteen: Shouldn't He Be Famous?, The Incredible Story of Iggy & the Stooges, 'The Star Spangled Banner', Curtis Mayfield audio, Rick Buckler, Lil' Kim and Merck Mercuriadis.

In this podcast episode, Mark interviews Daniel Wolff, a Grammy-nominated author, about his work in music history and his collaboration with Dave Marsh on the book "Kick Out The Jams." (Daniel was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes for the box set of Sam Cooke's gospel recordings.)Mark and Daniel discuss the evolution of music criticism, the role of protest songs, and the importance of collaboration in the creative process.Wolff also offers advice for aspiring creators, emphasizing the need to not take oneself too seriously and to focus on getting the work out into the world.Specific topics include:- Daniel's work with Dave Marsh and their new book "Kick Out The Jams"- The organization and content of the book- The role of music in social issues and protest- The importance of collaboration in creativity- Advice for aspiring creators: don't take yourself too seriously and get your work out there1. "I think protest music is going all the time now. I mean, Kendrick Lamar, the hip hop artist, I think writes protest music and or pop music and or hip hop, however you want to define it. But it's music that says, wait a second, here's the world I'm living in. Isn't the way I want it. How do I talk about this?"2. "I think for me, the key to collaboration is to kind of give up authorship in a way and say, okay, well we'll change this because it doesn't work here, even though I think that's the best part of the writing. It's not working with you. And so we'll go on. I don't think it's much different from a marriage or a friendship. You're trying to figure out how to get along."3. "[Dave] always loved contemporary music. He still loves contemporary music. It's not like, oh, it never got any better than fill in the blank, whoever your favorite is. It was as you point out him going, well, okay, but we've got this ideal of what it ought to be, which was a communal ideal that we were all in it together and it was more democratic than it was capitalistic, if you will."The advice given by Daniel is to not take yourself too seriously and not get too caught up in the importance of hitting the send button or publishing your work. He emphasizes that there will always be more opportunities to create and that it's important to avoid self-importance. Collaboration is also encouraged as it can help to diminish feelings of self-importance and bring a fresh perspective to your work. Overall, the advice is to have fun with your creativity and not put too much pressure on yourself.Co-editor of Kick Out the Jams, a selection of essays by Dave Marsh that cover 35 years of music writing. Worked with Dave on Rock & Rap Confidential, co-wrote with him, and appeared on his various Sirius radio shows. Grammy-nominated author Daniel Wolff has published six books of award-winning non-fiction, from You Send Me, a biography of singer Sam Cooke, to How To Become an American: A History if Immigration, Assimilation, and Loneliness. He worked with Dave Marsh on Rock & Rap Confidential, has published four volumes of poetry, produced a number of documentary films, and written collaboratively with musicians, choreographers, sculptors, and scientists. @dwolff6 on Instagram Copyright 2023 Mark Stinson

Donna Dennis Interviewed by Joanna Eisenberg (SLC20) and Sarah Sterling (SLC21) Dennis is one of a small group of groundbreaking women—including Alice Aycock, Jackie Ferrara and Mary Miss—who pushed sculpture toward the domain of architecture in the early 1970s. Deborah Everett writes in Sculpture Magazine “When Donna Dennis created her earnest, plain-spoken Tourist Cabins at the outset of her career, they had the impact of cultural icons.” Drawing from overlooked fragments of rural and urban vernacular American architecture, her sculptures—tourist cabins, hotels, subway stations, roller coasters—have represented stopping places on the journey through life. Dennis has received solo exhibitions at The Brooklyn Museum, the Neuberger Museum, the Sculpture Center, and Holly Solomon Gallery, among others. Her work has also appeared in group exhibitions including the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennal, the National Academy Museum, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Walker Art Center, MOMA P.S. 1, Tate Gallery, ICA London, and Ludwig Forum fur Internationale Kunst, among others. A frequent collaborator, Dennis has worked with poets Anne Waldman, Kenward Elmslie, Daniel Wolff and Ted Berrigan and with performance artist/puppeteer Dan Hurlin. Edited and Produced by Kyrie Ellison (SLC21)

Folk Alley Sessions

From breakups to childhood memories, romantic entanglements and friends in trouble, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin duo Dead Horses (Sarah Vos and Daniel Wolff) tackle anything and everything that comes their way. Recently, they let us in to see how they think about music and musicianship and shared a song from their 2018 release, My Mother the Moon, as well as a couple of new songs for 2019 during an exclusive in-studio session at Beehive Productions Studios in Saranac Lake, NY.

(Session originally published April 2019)If you had to choose just one word to describe the duo Dead Horses, it might well be “personal”; nothing is off-limits when it comes to what inspires their sound and, maybe even more importantly, the stories they tell in their music. Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the duo, Sarah Vos and Daniel Wolff, first started making music together in 2010; they cut their musical teeth playing at every opportunity that presented itself: farmers’ markets, the sides of busy roads, bars – so many bars – and any other place that would have them. And through it all, they remain dedicated to what Sarah describes as “the most worthy of pursuits for musicians” – songwriting. Of "Mighty Storm," Vos says, “This song was inspired by a situation from a couple summers ago. My girlfriend and I live in Wisconsin and her brother was living in California at the time, where he got into a pretty serious motorcycle accident. She had to go out there to be with him, and I couldn’t join her. I struggled a lot because I wanted to be there for her, and I wanted her to be there for me too. It was kind of a strange moment in time, so I wrote this song to try to be there for her. Here they share a song inspired by the poetry of Robert Frost (from their 2018 release, My Mother the Moon,) plus a couple of new songs for 2019, including the previously unreleased, "Mighty Storm." Of "Mighty Storm," Vos says, “This song was inspired by a situation from a couple summers ago. I sent her a cell phone recording of it, then Dan and I collaborated and arranged the parts together.”###Upcoming tour dates

About This Episode At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. “My older brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and my twin had mental illnesses and cognitive disabilities,” explains Vos. “When the church kicked us out, they basically told my dad, ‘If you can’t lead your family, how can you lead your church?’” “At the time we were expelled, we lived in the church’s parish house,” explains Vos. “Suddenly, my father was unemployed and my family was homeless. My parents couldn’t afford insurance for the medical care my siblings needed. We were kicked out and completely abandoned.” However, Vos’ love of music carried on after she left the church. “Almost half of those services [were] just singing hymns,” she reflected in a recent interview. “I also went to a parochial school, so I had to memorize hymns and Bible verses all day, too. When I really look back, before I had the chance to explore music on my own, that was really central. Even the way I write songs [today] is reminiscent of hymns. That’s maybe why I was so drawn to folk music to begin with: it’s geared towards communities singing it together.” By the time Vos turned 18, her family had begun to get back on their feet. She headed to Milwaukee for college, and there, came to terms with revelations about her sexuality that her religious upbringing had forced her to repress. The mix of freedom and relief and shame and guilt was overwhelming, and a depressive breakdown ensued. “I couldn’t take care of myself,” she remembers. “I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t do anything. I stopped going to classes, and then I dropped out altogether and moved back home to Oshkosh. That’s where I met Dan.” When bassist Daniel Wolff and Vos first started playing music together, it felt as if the clouds had finally parted. Vos introduced songs she’d been writing since high school open mics, Wolff learned a new instrument for the band (the double bass), and within months, they had earned a devoted local following. Regular gigs led to steady residencies led to regional touring and their first recordings. Two of the band’s original members ultimately left the group due to opioid addictions (“I still see the pawn shop sticker every time I look at my guitar tuner,” remembers Vos), but the Dead Horses moniker the pair created as a tribute to a friend who’d over-dosed from heroin stuck even after their departure. American Songwriter called Vos “a compelling vocalist…who carries every tune with her husky, deeply emotional tone that feels lived in and real,” while No Depression hailed her songwriting as “beautiful and fresh.” With a fleshed out touring lineup, the group logged countless miles, sharing bills along the way with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, Rhiannon Giddens and Elephant Revival in addition to making festival appearances from Bristol Rhythm and Roots to WinterWonderGrass. We were lucky enough to welcome them live on stage at Big Top Chautauqua. Today, to start your new year off right, I know you're going to love listening to award-winning author Daniel Wolff, who wrote one of my all-time favorite parenting books: How Lincoln Learned To Read. In fact, I loved this book so much that it is one of the 9 1/2 Key Resources for Old School Parents (which you can get by clicking here.) Today's guest Daniel Wolff has, among many other things, produced a documentary about Hurricane Katrina, been nominated for a Grammy in 2003, and written 10 books on all different subjects including the one that we spend most of our time discussing today, How Lincoln Learned To Read. Written in 2009, this book is a go-to for me whenever I need to make big decisions about about the boys' upbringing; because Mr. Wolff tells the stories of the childhoods of many prominent Americans throughout history, I learn something different from each one. Plus, a great read that's fun, interesting, historical – and makes me feel a little smarter each time I pull it off the shelf. During today's's show, listen for: the importance of fun in education; all these years later, we may think of Ben Franklin as old and stodgy, but almost right from the moment he could read, Franklin was quite the mischief maker how author and scientist Rachel Carson's girlhood, during which she stayed home often from school to play and walk in the woods, helped her grow up into the advocate for national environmental change she became a great piece of parenting advice – my guest shares that decisions became much easier for him when he to "think like a grandparent" Key Links: Daniel Wolff's author page at Four Way Books; here is his new book, The Names of Birds How Lincoln Learned To Read, a great read that has helped me be a better parent Amazing poet-four-children-of-all-ages Shel Silverstein

Nesse episódio foram degustadas as cervejas: Thwaites Flying Shuffle (Inglaterra), Anchor Brekle's Brown (Estados Unidos), Tilburg's Dutch Brown Ale (Holanda) e Klein Brown Ale (Brasil). Boa Viagem!
