In Anzegem, Belgium, about 20 miles southwest of Ghent, Brouwerij 't Verzet (https://brouwerijtverzet.be) is no cover band. Sure, they could make some local waves by brewing up Citra-Mosaic hazy IPAs, but what would that mean to the strong brewing traditions in their corner of Flanders? Rather than play someone else's tunes, could they instead take the familiar, culturally significant notes that everyone around them knows, and play them with a swagger and attitude that helps people see them in a new light? Or, as cofounder Alex Lippens muses, could they drink these innovative hazy IPAs from the United States, learn from them, and inject that knowledge back into classic Belgian styles, to help move those traditions forward? Couldn't they develop their own take on a classic Flemish style such as oud bruin—but instead of making it taste like Rodenbach, make it feel cool and relevant for a younger generation of drinkers? These are among the questions that Lippens asks throughout this episode. While the answers are still in progress—check back with the Verzet team in 40 years, maybe, when their brewing careers are complete—he also touches on: pushing the borders of drinkability and excitement rethinking Michael Jackson's categorization of oud bruin and Flemish red ale brewing with a heavy caramel-malt load and 20 percent unmalted barley using techniques such as cereal mashes and extremely long boils to build flavor and texture blending parts of seven different barrel-aged base beers into Verzet Oud Bruin maintaining and using a wild-caught mixed culture promoting quicker Lactobacillus action by restricting hops and pitching on fully fermented wort building an impression of fruit flavor without using actual fruit blending to a total acidity goal And more. There's a lot to love about Belgian beers.Once upon a time, many craft drinkers in America turned to Belgian beers for their quality and complexity. Either for a break from the limited American beers or due to lack of availability in their area. Golden ales, dubbels and tripels and quads, lambic and geuze, there was a bounty of flavor coming from Belgian breweries. On the heels of his Belgians in the Garden beer festival John Roberts of Bold Monk joins us this week along with fellow brewer Brian Purcell of Three Taverns. This week the gang gets Belgian and discusses an under appreciated style... the Flanders Red Ale. They geek out over the tart, fruity, and slightly sweet style and while on a sour kick break out a mixed fermentation brew by Barrel Culture in Durham. Check it out!

It is no secret that we are big fans of sour beers. There are a multitude of styles including Flanders Red, gose, Berliner Weisse, and lambic to name a few. The sour beer we will be trying today comes from a brewery that not only does a wide array of sours but also does many other tasty beers as well. For this week's show we will be trying the Spicy Pickle Monster from Prairie Artisan Ales. This beer was selected for the show by Keith's wife while they were shopping at Plaza Liquors on his birthday and its combination of flavors is definitely intriguing. This sour ale features lemon, lime, orange, spicy dill pickles and this year also has habaneros to add a little extra spice. What did we think? What do you think? Chris got to reconnect with family and was surprised by the length of the beer names at Burial. Nick is getting excited about the concert festivals being announced and got into an impromptu slider battle. John gets his second kid feeling empowered and smashes a disc golf disk. The untimely passing of Taylor Hawkins is something that both Chris and John reflect on.We discuss interesting beverages we've had recently including a pilsner from Burial, Nick's foray into hop tea, and another fun stout from 903. The guys discuss their favorite ballpark snacks. Nick talks quite literally about walking in his dad's shoes at Darrel K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Then hits us with a dad joke. He also talks about the always-fun random slumber party. Finally, we talk about Flanders Red ales as we discuss and taste our beer of the week in the Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe. As always, thank you for listening.
Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com 19 Crimes Martha's Chard is the brand's first California chardonnay. Martha reportedly worked closely with the team at 19 Crimes and created a wine “that breaks preconceived notions of California chardonnay” and they said it's “approachable and simultaneously as bold as her personality”. 19 Crimes Martha's Chard will be available in California in early January and distributed nationally on Feb. 1, with a suggested retail price of $11.99 https://cheersonline.com/2022/01/06/19-crimes-launches-martha-stewart-chardonnay And speaking of crimes - when it comes to beer - we've all made some poor choices. I remember when I was young, fairly broke, and the choice was made for me in the store - where I shopped for the cheapest beer in the biggest package. So - yeah - I picked some bottom of the barrel beers - which may or may not be on this list. OK, several of them are on this list of the worst beers in the world! Might be a coincidence but most of these beers are made in the US… https://www.eatthis.com/news-worst-beers-in-the-world/ Now if you want to experiment with making some good beer - then you should know what a Foeder is (hint - it's pronounced food-er). And it's a large oak barrel - can be horizontal or vertical - where you can age or ferment beer - whether it's wild, sour or not. They're used to make styles like Lambics, Flanders Red and even brown ales. So why use one - well, they're larger than you think. Usually they start at 3x larger than a typical wine or beer barrel, but can really be as big as you need - which means they can actually save space & time in breweries. If you want to find out more about Foeders, check out the link https://www.hopculture.com/foeders/ Next time: I hope to have my better camera working again! The Boozebuddy Update continues on video! We've got our top 10 games of this year! As always they are the games we played this year, and maybe not all ones that came out in 2021. We start out with a quick honorable mentions, much to Ben's timing chagrin, and then hit those juicy top 10s. Will it be a year of indies, or triple A? How much overlap do the three of us have throughout our top games? Tune in to find out! Aadil starts off with the Wrongfully Accused West Coast IPA from Cervecera Peninsula and then moves onto Nepomucen's Triple-Double Hazy IPA, with Citra, Sabro and Azacca. Ben has Dig's Mount Rainier New England IPA, then the Northern Monk 8th Anniversary DIPA. Chris Kells & Mihaela Petrescu & I have a conversation about how they coped with 2020, their 1st brews, joining the Vox&Hops Crew, working on Brewtal North America & if they could create their own unique collab for themselves. Throughout tonight's hang I enjoyed 2 very special brews: Ras L'Bock x Microbrasserie À la Fût 's "L'Anse de Mékinac" & Microbrasserie À la Fût x Ras L'Bock 's "Rouge de L'Anse". This is a unique Collab. Both breweries blended their own version of a Flanders Red with Wild Cherries with the others & then aged the results in Oak Barrels. "L'Anse de Mékinac" pours out with a deep red orange veil, slaps earthy oak on the nose, rips a tart acidic fruity finish & clocks in with a 6.6% ABV. "Rouge de L'Anse" pours out with a cloudy orange veil, radiates oak laced cherries on the nose, smashes a tart smooth funky finish & clocks in with a 5.4% ABV. Get ready for Vox&Hops Brewtal North America which is presented by IndieMerchstore, fueled by Heartbeat Hot Sauce Co. & powered by Yakima Chief Hops!!! 22 Unique Band Collabs which were brewed by Metal Breweries will be dropping all across North America throughout the week of June 21st to the 25th! 8 years ago, we started this show in the hopes that we could bring some of the mystery behind beer judging to you. While we aren't sure that has happened, we've been able to help homebrewers across the world improve their beers and, hopefully, their vocabulary on just what in the hell is going on in their fermentations. So allow us a hot second to reflect, please. Oh, also we judge a Flanders Red ale. Because what's a judging show without some (beer) judging? Learn more about your ad choices. Pucker up, buttercup, cause we are talking about Oud Bruins and Flander’s red today. Is there any difference to these styles, and if so, is one necessarily better than the other? We probably won’t answer that question, but we will look into what makes these beers what they are. So grab a beer, maybe some pancakes since it’s Belgian, and have a Drink.
Welcome back to The Brew Crew Podcast. We are a fun, non-pretentious podcast about beer. In this fifteenth episode, we fill a huge void in our show by talking about recent beer adventures, kangaroo nut sacks, and so much geography. We review two beers, Destihl Brewery's Flanders Red (bit.ly/2B51vqw) and WarPigs and 3Floyd's collaboration Foggy Geezer (bit.ly/2zOAHZK), and then we play one on one Untapped game. Thank you so much for joining us!
Finally, Flanders Red has come back to Malt Couture! Season 3, Episode 7 – This week, homebrew from Four Brewers listener Michael Kirshner, and The Messenger from Noble Ale Works and Three Weavers Brewing Company. Can homebrews be whalez? This is the question that Four Brewers listener, Michael Kirshner, proposed to us in an email a few weeks ago. Personally speaking, I’ve definitely wanted to spear a few local homebrew whalez that have become legendary over the years, so yes, homebrew can indeed venture into the “whalez” territory. Thar Be Whalez! Michael was kind enough to send us some of his homebrew for the show this week and suffice to say, they are pretty over the top, as far as homebrew goes. The first beer up is a Flanders Red that was aged in a second use Buffalo Trace Barrel for five freakin’ years! What?! That’s some commitment. [Direct YouTube Video Link] Next up is quad that was brewed in March of 2014. This beer is a crowd favorite according to Mike, and rightly so. It’s delicious! The last beer from Michael is a Russian imperial stout made with oats and lactose sugar that was brewed in November of 2014 and aged for six months in a fresh Four Roses barrel. Michael wasn’t lying when he told us he was sending whalez…thar she blows! The Messenger We wrap up the show with an awesome collaboration beer between two stellar southern California breweries, Noble Ale Works and Three Weavers Brewing Company called, The Messenger. This beer was first brewed early in 2014. The Messenger is a seasonal release IPA coming in at 7.3% ABV, made with Weyermann pilsner malt and dry hopped with Pacific Jade, El Dorado, and HBC 342 hops. The bottle we have on the show this week was made with Buddha’s Hand and Yuzu to really give it a fruity, tropical zing. Thanks again to Michael Kirshner for the beers! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
