In this episode, my guest is Dr. Brian Keating, Ph.D., a cosmologist and professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. We discuss the origins of the universe and how humans have used light and optics to understand where and how life on Earth emerged. We explore how early humans charted the stars, sun, moon, and other celestial events to measure time and track seasons, as well as how stargazing continues to connect us to a shared ancient experience. Additionally, we examine the scientific process, the practical and ethical challenges of pursuing groundbreaking discoveries, and the emotional toll of striving for recognition in one's profession. Finally, we discuss whether astrology has any scientific validity and consider the possibility of life beyond Earth. Read the full episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. We had to wing it this week...Unfortunately, our guest had a last minute emergency this week and we'll have to reschedule Larry for another time. It's cool, we've got this. We can always talk about beer.Canned Fish and Beer Pairing? One of our latest obsessions is tinned seafood. Sounds like we're kind of late to the party here but at least we made it to the party. I've always enjoyed a nice kipper or some tuna salad but there's a whole world out there I had no idea about. Fish lovers have their own forums, inside jokes, and memes just like beer nerds. Weirdos. We offer up some pairing suggestions for those that want to explore this salty world with us. Grab yourself some deens (that's what the cool kids call sardines) and grab a brew. If you've got any favorites please let us know.Tilray Buys a Bunch of BreweriesThe big news in beer this week is Tilray's purchase of 8 brands from Anheuser Busch. There's plenty of debate on whether this is a smart or dumb move for Tilray. It seems they got a great price on the package, less than AB paid for just one of the breweries when they acquired them. The purchase of Sweetwater started Tilray (Aphria at the time) down the beer path and they acquired a few others since then. Here in Atlanta we've enjoyed Alpine and Green Flash brews on tap at the Sweetwater taproom. Maybe we'll see a cornucopia of these legacy brands there in the future.German beer sales down, Guinness has a record yearSounds like our German friends are easing up their drinking as sales are reported to be down 2.9% compared to last year. The country saw a bit of a boost once Covid restrictions lifted but that has gone away. In contrast to that, Guinness had it's best year ever with sales up 9% across all regions. We're ending the week BIG, REAL BIG! Big cans and big ABV as we dive into Green Flash Imperial West Coast IPA in a 19.2oz can!
It was the creation that forged a style and it started right here in San Diego with Green Flash West Coast IPA.
Hazy beers are here to stay so why not have some fun with them. Green Flash takes their flagship West Coast IPA and turns it into a hazy beer.
Green Flash's 2018 bankruptcy rocked the beer world and threw the future of their iconic brands into doubt. Earlier this year, those brands were acquired by Sweetwater, and head brewer Ryan Joy was tasked with figuring out how to brew them on a different brewhouse, with vastly different water, and for an audience with a much different context for beer. In this episode, he discusses: matching the unique, and salt-heavy water of San Diego using unusual chlorides, in large amounts changing up the yeast to achieve greater haze stability adjusting for the efficiencies and increased utilization of the new brewhouse shifting hops from the boil to the whirlpool for more aroma expression working with crystal malt in West Coast IPA to maintain the classic appeal the classic to modern West Coast IPA range using terpenes to build unique flavors and aromas in hop-forward beer And more. It's The World Cup, and we're going to talk about the most horrific thing that's happened in Qatar. Namely, their insane beer laws. And human rights violations. But mostly beer laws. Tyler and Jeremy wade into what it's like to be an imbibing infidel during the biggest sporting event of the year. PLUS! Green Flash is the brand that just refuses to die. We run down the list of classics trying to remember what it was about this San Diego brewery that captured our imaginations. Vine Pair releases its list of 25 most influential IPAs. We talk about how they are wrong. And the perfect beer to pair with every horrible holiday moment.
What's up, Y'all? How's your week gone? Drink anything good? This is gonna shock you, but we did drink some good things. And we talked to some good people. Jason Pellet from Orpheus Brewing and Nathan Schieber from Cherry Street hung out in the studio with us. We cracked some new brews and some vintage brews and covered some hot craft beer topics. We hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Flex is back! We're talking about some new breweries, drinking with Instagram friends, trouble for hop growers, and Flex has some awful news to share about what he's been drinking. Flex is sipping on Desert Noise from https://www.eagleparkbrewing.com (Eagle Park Brewing). Greg is drinking Cactus Cat from https://www.ogopogobrewing.com (Ogopogo Brewing). Greg talks about the party Pedals & Pints threw for Emo Night and what a great job Monica and Brit did on their emo collab beer. He also got to hang out with friend-of-the-show Fontana Jim at Naughty Pine. Flex did unofficial research with friends who gave him a Bud Light Next; not most incredible friends. He also tried to get drunk from some 450 North cans, but there wasn't any alcohol; now, he just has fruit flies. Chew Your Beer calls in to give Greg the business about his feelings on Untappd. Mikkeller closes its San Diego taproom and production facility but still won't address the real problem. In October, Maui Brewing and Modern Times will be under the “Craft Ohana” umbrella. Sapporo officially closes on their deal with Stone Brewing; another one bites the dust (this becomes a therapy session). Another San Diego brewery, Green Flash, is hitting the auction block this month. And German hop crops are not doing so well with the drought, it might be time to find some new varietals and we have questions. Welcome to February; Dry January is over! The Dream Team is back, baby! Deb stops in to hang with Flex and Greg for Batch 290. The all-stars are sampling new beer styles, gearing up for the Super Bowl, prepping for Valentine's Day, and some colossal beer collaboration news!Greg is getting the research started with Baxter, a Cold IPA from Fremont Brewing in Seattle. Flex is redeeming the pink beers with Fatty's Beer Works Cotton Candy Milkshake IPA. The crew celebrates the end of Dry January, not that anyone participated. The Super Bowl is around the corner; who's getting ready to party? National Hangover Day and Valentine's Day are one in the same this year; what will you be doing? And Greg has some massive news about a collaboration brew with 14 Cannons and California Coffee Republic. California coming in strong with some dumb rules in this week's Ludicrous Libation Law. Green Flash's brewery is still for sale if you've got the cash. Budweiser is dropping a new, non-alcoholic energy in India. Also gross, AB InBev is releasing a zero-carb beer. The Colorado Beer Guy hits all the breweries in Colorado in record time. And Dick Leinenkugel is leaving his post at Leinenkugels.Make sure to follow us across the web and social media:Deb: www.instagram.com/onehopmess Flexy: www.instagram.com/flex_me_a_beer Craft Beer Republic: www.CraftBeerRepublic.com www.instagram.com/CraftBeerRepublic www.facebook.com/CraftBeerRepublicPod www.twitter.com/CraftBeerRepub (805) 538-2337 Use promo code UNFILTERED on Tavour.
I think it's time to ask yourself; what do you believe in? Beer, of course.Erica grabs some pretzels and stops in to hang with Flex and Greg on Batch 289. The salty crew is talking about the charity work they're doing in Indiana, which booze will protect you from COVID, drunk landlords breaking into apartments, and annoying breweries that play with our emotions.Greg starts the beer research with Lunch, an IPA from Maine Beer Company. Next, Erica brings in Henhouse IPA, which is supposed to stand for Incredible Pale Ale…but is it?A very happy birthday to one of our favorite people: Coley! Flex and Greg vent about a brewery that contacted the show for an interview and then became unreasonable to deal with. And what is the deal with Cold IPAs?Idaho coming in weird with this week's Ludicrous Libation Law.Turns out that we at the Craft Beer Republic are doing great things to help out the state of Indiana; you're welcome. The Green Flash brewery might have a new tenant sooner than later. NBA start Marcus Camby launches his own super-creative beer. Turns out certain alcohols will help protect you from getting COVID, but is it your favorite? An aluminum shortage is on the verge of increasing beer prices; time to organize some protests! And finally, a tenant finds their hammered landlord…in their bed.Make sure to follow us across the web and social media:Erica: www.instagram.com/necknosh www.necknosh.com Flexy: www.instagram.com/flex_me_a_beer Craft Beer Republic: www.CraftBeerRepublic.com www.instagram.com/CraftBeerRepublic www.facebook.com/CraftBeerRepublicPod www.twitter.com/CraftBeerRepub (805) 538-2337 Use promo code UNFILTERED on Tavour.
“In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes,” Benjamin Franklin. Everyone's favorite salt-queen, Erica (Neck Nosh), stops in to hang with Flex and Greg as they talk about mixing alcohols and getting way too drunk, the importance of beer research out in the field, drunk-responding to DMs, and the greatest gift to humans: Walking Around Beers. Flex kick-starts the research session with Hidden Meanings, a Double NE IPA from Good City Brewing in Milwaukee, WI. Next, Greg warms up in the bullpen with Death and Taxes, a San Francisco-style black lager from Moonlight Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, CA. Greg has an admission: he got really drunk over the weekend due to the 49ers winning and moving on in the playoffs. What started as a research day turned into mixing booze, drunk messaging, and a lost night. It also turns out that he has a weird hangover remedy. Erica gets sloppy and reaches for a Bloody Mary. Flex grabbed a friend and went out for some essential lunch beers; the work never stops. Do you have a specific drink to help you with the hangover blues? Thanks to Georgia for bringing some sanity to this crazy world and allowing people to drink outside. Are you a fan of “walking around beers”? Monster Energy Drinks throws down some cash and buys CANarchy Craft Beer Collective. Turns out Molson isn't just selling off the St. Archer taproom; they're done altogether. The former Green Flash brewery and taproom is up for sale if you're looking for a major brewery to open. Budweiser is putting a golden ticket in some beer boxes...sort of. And BrewDog is in more trouble, this time for lying to the government. Can you buy a hip, gently used brewery with just photos of apes? At Bad Boiz Castle Incorporated LLC we say, "Yeah, bruh. Yeah." Kings & Convicts is at it again purchasing yet another San Diego brewery, this time adding Saint Archer to their portfolio. In other Beer News, SweetWater's big weed overlords look to sell of what's left of Green Flash while Budweiser goes full Willy Wonka with their golden can contest. Alex brings in a saison from a brewery operating like it's 2005, Michael goes into homer mode, and Stephen goes pie-adjacent with a cobbler inspired beer. Green Flash at Sunset, a song about doing nothing.Who would you be if you had nothing to do? No problems to solve, questions to answer, or worries to resolve? Who would you be if the voice in your head continually telling the story of what is good or bad grew comfortably still. Who would we be? In the song Green Flash at Sunset, I explore this idea. How does spending time doing nothing reminds us of why we chose each other in the first place. Here, time is luxury and abundance resides in the simple act of sitting with someone you love. In this episode we discuss: PG&E bad, beer good Too little, too late Green Flash continues to close places Brew Dog makes some money Millercoors trying to hide some things The post Episode 308 – The Virginia Paradox first appeared on The Craft Beercast.
In this episode, we sit down with Ben Widseth, Vice President of Marketing at Green Flash Brewing Co. – a trailblazing craft brewery, headquartered in San Diego, CA. With a well-established passion for marketing, Ben holds both agency and in-house experience. After starting his career with Ford Motor Co.'s dedicated agency Team Detroit (formerly known as GTB), Ben spent several years at Leo Burnett, working on both the Kellogg's and McDonald's accounts, before moving on to in-house marketing for Ally Financial, and then Anheuser Busch InBev, where he concentrated on brands such as Stella Artois and Shock Top. Now with Green Flash, Ben is focused on keeping craft beer fans thirsty for more, as their brand continues to innovate with experimental, limited-edition and seasonal offerings, in addition to their renowned lineup of long-time favorites.
On this episode, Whitey and the Scotsman get to drink Contains No Juice by the most excellent Alvarado Street Brewing Company. It really deserves its name and is really a great beer. With that out of the way, the guys begin to talk about the current goings-on with Green Flash Brewing Company. How has such a stalwart beer in the California Beer scene had such a precipitous decline? Well, the Scotsman put some legwork in and took a look at many of the press releases going back to 2013 with regards to Green Flash's acquisitions, expansions, and even some departures. Does it tell a picture of someone who grew too much, too quickly, or was this simply a case where the market turned against them? Well, you be the judge, but we think you'll find the history tells the tale. Somehow they end up talking about the State of Jefferson, serial killers, and the criminal justice system (?). All in a day's work on this episode of the Ale Evangelist Show!
