Just about everywhere we go, we hear opinions on the IBA. How it's doing, what it should be doing, what it shouldn't be doing and what it should be doing differently. We have opined on this ourselves. But we also hear a lot about why breweries consider it's not worth joining or why they are leaving, and this often involves suggestions that the association isn't doing enough in some areas, or is focusing on the wrong areas. Often there's little understanding of the enormity of the association's task just in dealing with governments at all levels on issues that are critical to the daily operation of every brewery, whether a member of the association or not. While we were in Canberra for the Hottest 100 Countdown, we took the opportunity to sit down with Richard and Kylie to try to understand what the IBA does, outside of its most visible work on the Indie Seal, the Indies and BrewCon just to give listeners an understanding of why having an association that represents the interests of brewers is so important. The Lynching Sites Project works to illuminate the truth about lynchings in Shelby County, foster community conversations about the history of racial violence in the community, and create a new legacy of racial equality and justice. In this program, LSP board members Richard Watkins and Kelsey Lamkin explain the organization's goals and programs generally and also discuss their current efforts to add the site of Ell Persons' lynching to the National Register of Historic Places. Ell Persons was lynched in 1917 near what is now Summer Avenue, after being accused of killing a white girl. The Lynching Sites Project is hosting a symposium - Turning the Light of Truth: The Lynching of Ell Persons - on Saturday, October 15. More information is available here. Last Saturday news broke that in the upcoming Federal budget brewers are going to get a significant boost through changes to excise. These changes have been long lobbied for, and it's a big boost for the IBA to have brought it home. At the same time, there was a touch of irony as the announcement was made at Canberra's BentSpoke Brewery - the irony being that BentSpoke founder Richard Watkins has been on this very podcast a number of times, during which he has sometimes voiced a measure of concern about that very measure. Today I speak with IBA Chair Peter Philip and Executive Director Kylie Lethbridge about the changes and the IBA's lobbying efforts that brought it about. We talk about what it means for brewers, and also whether concerns about a brewing gold rush are founded. Needless to say being beer is a conversation we discuss a whole lot more besides over the next 50 minutes. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt, who we are thrilled to announce are back supporting us for another year of conversations. With over 25 years in the field, Cryer Malt are dedicated to providing the finest brewing ingredients to help brewers create the foundations of a truly excellent beer. This week's special edition is the podcast version of our GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beers live countdown episode, recorded on 23 January 2021 at Brisbane's Easy Times Brewery. Guests featured include Richard Watkins, from winning brewery BentSpoke, Stone & Wood's Nick Boots and Brick Lane's Paul Bowker, and Easy Time's Curran McCarthy. This special edition was made possible with the support of Cryer Malt, Yakima Chief Hops and Barrett Burston. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. Cryer Malt is proud to team up with Yakima Chief Hops to bring the very best Pacific Northwest hops to Australian and Kiwi brewers. Yakima Chief Hops strives for innovation, quality and transparency through their 100% grower-owned network of family hop farms. Their hops are available through your mates at Cryer Malt. We thank Rallings Labels and Stickers for sponsoring this podcast. Brewers, if you are still applying self-adhesive labels to your bottles and cans, and believe that this is a sustainable solution for your packaging needs, you may want to call Rallings Labels, Stickers and Packaging and discuss your options with them. The team at Rallings will walk you through the various options available to you, that are more sustainable than applying self-adhesive labels which don't help the environment at all. Whilst they do produce self-adhesive labels for many breweries, there is a much better way to ensure that your carbon footprint is lower than what you are currently doing by utilising pre-sleeved cans. The craft beer movement that has taken hold globally over recent decades has been spearheaded by a single beer style – India Pale Ale.IPA absolutely dominates craft beer in North America, where the movement started, and it has become increasingly popular here in Australia over recent years. One of the brewers who has been in the box seat to witness and help drive that evolution is Richard Watkins founder of Bentspoke Brewing Company in Canberra.Richard has been brewing continuously since 1994. By that I mean he still actively involved in the day-to-day process of making the beer, rather than delegating that to someone else.By his reckoning, that potentially makes him Australia's longest serving brewer.Bentspoke produces a whole host of different IPAs, led by its flagship beer Crankshaft IPA.But this interview coincides with the latest release of Cluster 8, Bentspoke's big, bold Double IPAthat is part of its ‘Drifter’ series of beers that drift in and out of availability each year.A quick note: As regular listeners would well know, Bintani – the brewing and distilling ingredients supplier – is a major sponsor of the Drinks Adventures Podcast.Bintani is also a shareholder in Bentspoke Brewing Company so I just want to disclose that conflict of interest so you don't find out later and think there was anything cynical about this episode, which really isn't the case.Bentspoke is one of Australia's largest independent craft breweries and Richard Watkins was bound to come up as a guest one way or an other. And as someone who has been brewing for as long as he has, I thought Richard was about the best person to answer some questions about the evolution of IPA in Australia:How it's brewed; the different styles of IPA in Bentspoke's range, the continued splintering of this style into many sub-genres; and whether it is always best to drink IPAs as fresh as possible – as we're always told by brewers. Our conversation started with Richard recalling his earliest memories of IPAs in Australia.
There are a wide range of topics that we love to discuss with brewers on Radio Brews News. One of those is the point at which classic styles and innovation and novelty clash. Regular listeners would have heard Matt's recent conversation with Bentspoke Brewing’s Richard Watkins when he released his Flanders Red Ale, Flemm. There was a time - and not that long ago - when this style of beer was the epitome of sour beers. With the recent trend of kettle souring and the flavour innovations that have occurred around it - and the many consumers that have discovered tart or sour flavours in beer as a result - it was interesting to see the widely varied comments on social media by drinkers who seemed surprised by this most classic of styles. The response was a great example of the tension that I suspect we’ll always see as classic and established styles crash up against craft brewing’s love for adventure. But we wanted to see what brewers thought, how they navigated consumer awareness and expectations and also the demands that are placed on them in a world of ever evolving styles and consumer tastes. Thanks to Bintani, we caught up with two brewers who, while both embracing creativity and new beer styles, are also highly awarded in classic beer styles, to hear their thoughts about the ever shifting sands of beer style. Enjoy the discussion with Bentspoke’s Richard Watkins and Balter’s Scott Hargrave. Richard Watkins is the co-founder of BentSpoke Brewing from the ACT. BentSpoke brews some of Australia's most popular craft beers and are available nation wide. They recently released one of Australia's first barrel aged beers in a can, Flemm - a Flanders Red Ale. He stopped by to tell us all about it.
This week we hear from Bentspoke's Richard Watkins and it's all about delicious barrel aged Flanders Reds. Beer is in a really interesting place right now. If you look at the early generation of craft brewers, many were inspired by travels through Europe, especially Belgium. Later, it was hop forward beers that inspired brewers and beer drinkers alike. Hop forward gradually morphed into hop driven beers and we saw an IBU arms race. More recently hops have meant haze and we have seen a race to be the cloudiest most fruit punchy beers on the market. Another notable trend has been the rise of what are termed sour beers, which has also seen a race to be the most mouth puckering, or wildest combination of flavours. It's all good fun and great for headlines and for attention, and also interest in the sector. But, at risk of prematurely earning an ‘ok boomer' from you, I was a beer drinker whose palate was shaped by the classic beers of Belgium and whose touchstones in sour beers were beers such as Rodenbach and Orval. To me, these beers are still amongst the greats, that show how good beer can be. If you haven't already, seek out some Flemm. It is sublime. Also, have a listen, or a relisten, to our conversation with Rodenbach's Rudi Ghequire from last year. It was a another very insightful delving into the world of Belgian beers. Love might be in the air this February, but what relationship is without its spats? As CIPD research recently found conflict to be “very much part of organisational life”, we set out to learn how to walk towards conflict and have better workplace disagreements. People Management’s Lilly Howlett and Siobhan Palmer spoke to Richard Watkins, founder and director of Let’s Go, and learned that ‘shithousing’ others’ ideas can be just as helpful as ‘greenhousing’ them in positivity. CEO of UK Mediation Dr Mike Talbot also taught us how to ‘launder’ our language to help manage and resolve conflicts at work, and even prevent some of them from happening in the first place. And, following the first two rounds of the 2020 Six Nations, former England rugby player Jon Sleightholme takes us through his transition from elite sport to the world of HR. Plus Tim Pointer helps a listener caught in the middle of a thorny workplace romance. Don't forget to give us your feedback by tweeting us at @peoplemgt or email pmeditorial@haymarket.com. Thank you to our guests from this episode: Richard Watkins, founder and director of Let’s Go Dr Mike Talbot, CEO of UK Mediation Jon Sleightholme, former international rugby player and Director of Evolve HR Consulting Tim Pointer, founder of Starboard Thinking
Last chance to contribute to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3Q9285DRichard Watkins, the Godfather of Canberra brewing and Co-Founder of Bentspoke Brewing, has been on the tools for almost 25 years. In that time, he has seen it all and has a few stories to share. In this episode, we talk about how he created the Hoppinator, his love of the Brew Pub model, advice on starting a brewery, Bentspoke Wild Ales and Australia's 3rd favourite beer for the 3rd year in a row...Crankshaft IPA!It's been a tough few weeks for the community of Canberra with the bush fires, and Bentspoke have been heavily involved assisting in the fund raising efforts, so I really appreciate the time Richard took to have a chat with me.

Rich and I met in 2014 and I invited him on the podcast to talk about collaboration and what it truly means for artists to use this as part of their creative practice. We discuss how it differs from participation, and he says a true collaboration is one where all parties involved are bringing something to the table and each person is growing their own practice. It is not about having an idea and then bringing people on board to help you fulfil it, that would be a straightforward project. Collaboration by contrast is approaching the conversation with an openness to how the project could be, and then to successfully fulfil it, having parameters in place particularly around the time frame and outcomes. This week on Beer is a Conversation, Matt Kirkegaard catches up with Richard Watkins, co-founder and head brewer at Canberra's BentSpoke Brewing. Richard can fairly be described as a craft beer pioneer, having brewed at the the famed Wig & Pen brewery for 17 years before founding BentSpoke in 2013. Regular listeners will recall we had originally planned to speak with Richard during our live Hottest 100 Countdown in January, but when we were scheduled to chat Crankshaft, their flagship beer, had not yet appeared in the count and he didn't want to miss the potential announcement. Today, with the passage of a couple of months, we talk about the Hottest 100 and what having three top 30 beers means to a brewery such as his. We discuss beer freshness, his struggles with the word craft, the importance of the meaning of the word independence and much more. It's a wide ranging conversation and Richard is well known for his deliberative approach and also his willingness to speak his mind, all of which make for a fascinating discussion. Enjoy the conversation.
