This week we're chatting about the Buffy Season 4 finale (or Christmas special?) with some divisive thoughts on dream sequences, A LOT of foreshadowing, and a lot of cheese in "Restless" For more Hot Chicks with Super[powers] check out: Emily has been watching the second season of Jessica Jones. While not as amazing as the first, the writing is solid and the female characters are getting even better Haley has been reading "Fresh Romance" by Rosy Press, a series of comics by different authors covering all types of romances. Hannah has been watching "Nailed It!" on Netflix, a failure-ridden baking show emceed by the amazing Nicole Byers
Critically acclaimed writer Alex de Campi teams up with some of comics' most distinctive talent to create tales of love gone wrong, right, and everywhere in between. A new issue of Twisted Romance is released by Image Comics each week in February. Joining us on the podcast are: Alex de Campi: an Eisner nominated writer for her graphic novel Smoke and beloved by GP for her series like Grindhouse, Mayday, No Mercy, and Archie Vs the Predator. Alejandra Gutierrez: a "human" woman from Colombia who makes comics, usually sexy ones, sometimes sad ones, and sometimes both. Her page with Emma Houxbois in the Eisner winning Love is Love anthology is Elana’s favorite. Katie Skelly: an award winning cartoonist whose work includes My Pretty Vampire, Nurse Nurse, Operation Margarine, and Agent 8 for Slutist.com. Trungles (Trung Le Nguyen): a comic book artist and illustrator whose work includes Adventure Time: Marshall Lee Spectacular, the highly adult coloring book Fauns and Flora, and Beauties in Fresh Romance.
Amanda Scurti is a Queens, NY based illustrator and cartoonist. She has worked as a colorist for Fresh Romance, and We Can Never Go Home. She is currently drawing FABIOLA & YLINI, a YA graphic novel, for Oni Press. In this episode, Amanda tells us about her experience freelancing as well as working on a team. Also, Kevin clumsily editorializes about art school and the future of illustration. Find more of Amanda's work on here website: http://www.amandascurti.com/ Follow Amanda on twitter @amandascurti Follow Kevin on twitter @knittedsweater Tight Pencils is also on twitter @tight_pencils, but tweets are very infrequent. Mind Grapes: You get comic recommendations! And YOU get comic recommendations! But first, Alli talks about her latest podcast binge, the wonderful 2 Dope Queens (showing especial appreciation for Hari Kondabolu’s story). Sara shares some of her latest comic loves in Fresh Romance, Girl Over Paris (a comic spun off from the novel Girl on a Wire), and Southern Cross. In a shocking change of pace, Matthew offers more comic suggestions in the form of the feminist works Chainmail Bikini and Vixen’s Keep, but then tells us a little about Rat Queens Vol. 3, which was slightly disappointing for totally understandable reasons. Sam wraps up with the Netflix Series Cooked, which is Michael Pollen’s latest docuseries looking at the concept of cooking and how it has shaped what we are. Nerd Alert! Sam and Alli both strive to be renaissance nerds that dabble in all forms of nerdery, but comics remain elusive – the entry bar seems high and unforgiving. Matthew has been reading X-Men comics all his life. Sara got super deep into comics in the last few years. And Alli has had an enduring love of the X-Men movies and television series. So how to we enter into a world so deep? Where do we start if we want to learn more about Professor Xavier and his rag-tag group of super-powered children? Sara and Matthew give us some good suggestions and talk about what X-Men Comic Fandom in particular means to them.
The Girls are struck with Cupid's arrow as they take on the anthology comic FRESH ROMANCE by Rosy Press. Just before succumbing to their wounds, they talk about Star Trek & Independence Day 2 trailers, Star Wars, and the future of the Stargate Universe. Plus! Can Monica overcome her fangirl rage to win Game Bangers or will this month's game be another gripping but disappointing session for our losingest Game Bangers player?
