Wahnsinn!

In this week's episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Casey Wichman, an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and university fellow at Resources for the Future, about the influence of social media on the popularity of national parks. Wichman estimates in a recent study that more exposure of a national park on social media increases visits to that park. He discusses people's relationships with national parks in a digital age; the effects of increased visitation on persistent issues in national parks, such as overcrowding and underfunding; and the potential boost in revenue that social media exposure can provide to national parks. About the Book:HOW DOES SANTA GO DOWN THE CHIMNEY?: When Santa arrives at a child's house on Christmas Eve, does he go down the chimney feetfirst or headfirst? What if he gets stuck? What if there's no chimney? Maybe he slides under the door, as thin as a piece of paper? Or is it possible he pours himself through the faucet? What happens once he's inside? Whether it's shape-shifting or impromptu laundry use, Mac Barnett's iconic talent for earnest deadpan humor and Jon Klassen's irresistibly funny art honor the timeless question with answers both ridiculous and plausible, mounting in hilarity as the night continues. Channeling a child's fanciful explanations (and begging for further speculation), this latest collaboration by a New York Times best-selling team will find a secure spot among family holiday traditions. Fairuza Balk's talented narration will draw listeners into this retelling of a mysterious Tyrolean folktale. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the rich sound effects and music that bring Jon Klassen's tale to life. Balk captures the youth and curiosity of Otilla, a young girl fleeing into the forest who discovers a mysterious home inhabited by a skull. Balk renders Otilla and the skull's warm dialogue, conveying their easy friendship and growing trust. When the skull confesses the scary truth about what haunts him every night, Otilla bravely stands up for her friend. The author narrates his afterword, explaining how he transformed the original tale. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Dreamscape. On Today's Show "That's still my trick too, never tell them how they're feeling. Never begin to even show how they're feeling. They'll get it anyway. You're describing negative space and the negative space you can't even get at.” - Jon Klassen Where there is empty space, our brains will fill in the blanks, and often, the way in which we personally fill those blank spaces is far more potent than anything that can be written in words or shown in an image. That's why despite being gifted in both illustrating and writing, Jon Klassen always intentionally restrains himself from specificity. Jon is a Caldecott Medal winner author and illustrator known for his distinctive minimalistic art style and quirky but profound writing. His work includes his Hat Trilogy, starting with "I Want My Hat Back", along with newer works such as "The Rock from the Sky," “The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale” and many collaborations with his longtime friend and author Mac Barnett. In this episode, Jon tells us the story of how he learned to embrace the unspoken through a “gunshot moment” in his youth. He'll talk about how he intentionally incorporates negative space into his work and why that is so impactful for young readers in particular, and we'll hear about the SNL classics that inspired his coy sense of comedy. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In his reading challenge, "A Tale to Remember," Jon invites readers to follow a process that for him emerged unintentionally in the creation of his latest book, "The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale." Casey Hudetz is a Chicago-based designer and filmmaker. Over the past few years, he has been exploring technological development with the help of human pop culture and storytelling. One of his projects is called The BEAR Test, and is his attempt to create a new "Turing Test" with the popular children's book I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. When can a child understand the ending - and when can an AI do it? This question took him on a long and well-documented journey that eventually brought him to Gather Conference in Stockholm, where we met. Casey is also fascinated by speculaltive futures and speculative design - particularly in relation to the Netflix series Black Mirror, so we talk about that as well. // Recorded at Fållan in Stockholm. // Podcast host: Christian von Essen // Check out hejaframtiden.se and our other English episodes.

Escuchar audio
