VYS0049 | Machines of Loving Vayse - Vayse to Face with Sequoyah Kennedy v2.0 - Show Notes Imagine, if you will, a world burning as society crumbles (is this stretching you?), in the perpetual, scorched twighlight of a dying planet, the determined foot of a tall figure crushes a skull on a landscape forged of human bones - that foot belongs to Sequoyah Kennedy and the human bones are the vestiges of the common myths and misunderstandings about artificial intelligence... apparently AI's are better than humans at devising effective metaphors in order to convey useful information - and we'll have to hope for their sake that's true. In this episode Hine and Buckley invite back to Vayse one of the most intelligent and articulate humans in the material world, Sequoyah Kennedy. Since the Nonsense Bazaar ended SK has gone deep down the rabbit hole of large language models and has returned to help Hine and Buckley get their heads round what artificial intelligence actually means in 2025 and dismisses some of the ubiquitous confusion which surrounds the topic: is the best use of AI as personal assistant and unpaid artists? Are there demons haunting cyberspace? Do androids dream of electric sheep? and he touches on one of the big questions of our time - are we all in very real danger from this soulless, characterless mockery of human ingenuity with no empathy, no conscience and no soul... or will Elon Musk just finally piss off so that we can live in glorious harmony with our wonderful, wise robot buddies? (recorded 11 March) Thanks to Sequoyah for his patenience in explaining these ocmplex ideas to two middle-aged luddites and thanks, as always to Special K - the man who makes sense of our ramblings, Keith who once again did a sterling job of the show notes. (mg)

Made it again after more medical misadventures; Covid this time, with various implications for the voice! I am going to take a three-month break with the publication of this one; recharge the batteries! Episode 3 of the TV Series is taken from an LP, The Johnny O'Keefe Show (a 1962 episode). The LP was reissued on CD. However, no attempt was made to fix the pitch of Johnny's various introductions; he sounded like he had a peg on his nose! To the best of my limited skill, I have recalibrated the pitch with, hopefully a better sound (no pegged noses!). The episode itself presents a bevy of Australian Rock & Pop stars including; Warren Williams, The Crescents, The Fauns, Ian Crawford, Lonnie Lee, Paul Wayne, Barry Stanton, Warren Carr and, JO'K himself. Enjoy The Johnny O'Keefe Show!

This week we're taking a look at a strange little book detailing the lore surrounding the fae folk of the Scottish Highlands. Written in 1692 by the reverend Robert Kirk, The Secret Commonwealth is one of the earliest works in the same tradition as the work of John Keel and a whole host of other weirdos who put on their Sunday best, go traipsing around the sparsely populated hills and forests, and start asking questions they maybe shouldn't. What's really remarkable about The Secret Commonwealth is just how much of the fairy lore from Scotland in the 600's matches up almost exactly with modern UFO folklore. Not only in the nature of the entities and encounters, but also in how much time Robert Kirk spends talking about psychics or, to use the terminology of the day, those born with "the second sight." Weirder still, Kirk's mysterious death and events that transpired afterwards led to rumors that Kirk did not, in fact, die, but was instead taken away to fairyland as punishment for revealing the secrets of those strange folk that dwell beneath the Earth.

Blessed be, beautiful souls and welcome to the sonic sacred circle that is the Witchcast. In this episode Lucy explores the impact of Scottish Apology to Witches, and shares the very eerie faery tale of the Reverend Robert Kirk, the preacher who was taken away by the fae. The author of The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Faeries, this reverend has had a profound influence on the relationship between humans and faerie beings. Lucy untangles the twisted history of his abduction and legend, and why both had such a profound impact on Witches and elementals alike. Then we move to song! Your voice is one of your most sacred and powerful magickal tools you could have, Witch - yet throughout history, women’s voices have often been forbidden, encapsulated perfectly by the demonisation of the mermaid and her song. Lucy offers ways to reconnect with your own powerful Witch voice, and sing once again the song of your soul. In between there is a lot of gorgeous pagan music, little moments of magick and whimsy, and most of all a warm and accepting magickal circle for you to share! From the forests and highlands We come, we come; From the river-girt islands, Where loud waves are dumb Listening to my sweet pipings. The wind in the reeds and the rushes, The bees on the bells of thyme, The birds on the myrtle bushes, The cicale above in the lime, And the lizards below in the grass, Were as silent as ever old Tmolus was, Listening to my sweet pipings. Liquid Peneus was flowing, And all dark Tempe lay In Pelion's shadow, outgrowing The light of the dying day, Speeded by my sweet pipings. The Sileni, and Sylvans, and Fauns, And the Nymphs of the woods and the waves, To the edge of the moist river-lawns, And the brink of the dewy caves, And all that did then attend and follow, Were silent with love, as you now, Apollo, With envy of my sweet pipings. I sang of the dancing stars, I sang of the daedal Earth, And of Heaven, and the giant wars, And Love, and Death, and Birth— And then I chang'd my pipings, Singing how down the vale of Maenalus I pursu'd a maiden and clasp'd a reed. Gods and men, we are all deluded thus! It breaks in our bosom and then we bleed. All wept, as I think both ye now would, If envy or age had not frozen your blood, At the sorrow of my sweet pipings.

This is the story of a prince from the moon. That prince's name? Vin Diesel, of course. JT HOLTAWAY (Camp_Daddy on Twitch and YouTube) stumbles through a magical chalk door to find 2 mystical creatures talking about a bald man, and joins them to discuss Guillermo Del Toro's 2006 Fantasy drama PAN'S LABYRINTH. Do you like Alice in Wonderland, but wish there were more Spanish Civil War-era bad guys in it? Well then do we have a movie for you and your oddly specific requirements. Join them as they answer such questions as: What did GDT almost direct? Why them fairies so ugly? How has this movie aged? Does this magic make sense? and has this movie received a mediocre American remake? among others... Thanks for coming on, JT! Subscribe to him on YouTube, and be sure to tune in to his Twitch! 008 Fairy Forts and Raths

Thin Places Travel Podcast

Today we’re talking about Fairies. There are many concepts about fairies. My only association with the word fairy was the Tinkerbelle sort in Peter Pan. Sort of a Fairy Godmother. The tooth fairy. A good little angel. Fairies that I heard about growing up were good… and there was never any worry about a fairy causing mischief or harm.   But in the pre-Christian Celtic countries the concept of fairies was different. These beings were feared because they could curse you or bring you bad luck. You didn’t mess with the fairies. You didn’t disturb their domain or their rath. You stayed away from fairy hills or forts. You didn’t cut down the lone hawthorn bush because it might be a fairy tree – a fairy domain.   There’s a well-known poem about fairies, written by a man from County Donegal named William Allingham. It describes this apprehension about interacting with the fairies.   Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen, We daren’t go a -hunting For fear of little men.   Fairies were known to steal babies and replace them with a fairy changeling who would bring bad luck to the house.   They stole little Bridget For seven years long; When she came down again Her friends were all gone.   They have kept her ever since Deep within the lake On a bed of flag-leaves Watching till she wake.   The hawthorns are associated with the fairies. All across Ireland you see lone hawthorn trees and bushes standing solitary in fields. Many of the farmers won’t cut them. Ireland built a dual lane highway around one hawthorn bush because none of the workers laying down the highway would cut the bush down. Eventually they rerouted the highway around the bush so as not to disturb it.   By the craggy hill-side Through the mosses bare, They have planted thorn-trees For pleasure here and there. Is any man so daring As dig them up in spite, He shall find their sharpest thorns In his bed at night. To many people – especially in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England – fairies are real. They are part of a communion of elemental beings that exist in a parallel realm or dimension. And there are people who interact with the fairies and connect with their energy. Our guest today is one of these people. She not only connects with the fairies – she uses their energy in holistic healing practices. Carmel Costello is a Spiritual Healer and kinesiologist who grew up on a farm in Co. Kilkenny. And on that farm, Carmel developed a healthy sense of respect for nature and what it produced. After finishing school, she spent years in the catering industry and had her own restaurant. In the year 2000, Carmel found herself working with adults who had learning difficulties, and it was from that experience that she developed her skill with energy healing. Carmel says that she always knew I was different. I felt different energies outside of me. I felt other people’s energy and the energy in nature – the plants and animals. In 2007 she studied kinesiology for two years and received a diploma in 2009 completing her training in many energy therapies such as Reiki, Quantum touch and Magnified Healing. At present she works as a healer supported by the energies of the divine, the fairies, the little people, the nature spirits. This support came about once she acknowledged their presence and recognized that they came to help. Carmel has felt the fairy energy quite strong. They’ve guided her in many ways – specifically in making fairy houses as healing tools. Carmel also has a unique sense of the landscape and the layers of energy and elemental beings in the sacred landscape, and we’re going to talk with her today about the sacred landscape in Kilkenny.   Doon Hill is located in Aberfoyle, Scotland - about 30 miles north of Glasgow near Loch Lomond – actually located in the Trossachs National Park. The fairies stories associated with Doon Hill came from folklorist and minister, Robert Kirk. He was born – the son of a minister in 1644. He was the seventh son and said to have the gift of second sight. There was a belief that a kind of magic built up in a woman’s womb with the birth of each son, so that by the 7th son, the magic was ripe and imparted to that child giving him special gifts – usually of the psychic nature. Kirk who became known as the Fairy Minister - is mostly known today for his communing with the fairies on Doon Hill. His manse was located near it – he could see it. He would take walks on the hill and commune with the fairies. Eventually he wrote down his experiences between 1691 and 1692 but died before it could be published. 123 years later, Sir Walter Scott published the book under the title The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies. It is still in print today. Kirk describes the fairies as ….said to be of middle nature between man and angel Intelligent fluidous spirits, light changeable bodies. Somewhat of the nature of a condensed cloud Best seen at twilight On one of his nightly walks, Kirk disappeared. Some say he was not seen for days and was eventually found dead at the top of Doon Hill in his nightshirt. Many people surmised that the fairies had taken him because he was revealing their secrets in his writings. Some say that the whole story about him being found dead is a lie. That he was never found. There was an incident where someone said they saw Kirk shortly after he disappeared. He told the person that the fairies had kidnapped him and he was to tell one of Kirk’s relations - named Graham that the only way he (Kirk) would attend Graham’s yet to be born son’s baptism and at that moment of appearance, Graham was to throw a dirk (knife) directly over Kirk’s head. This ritual would release him from captivity. Kirk did appear at the baptism, but Graham was too frightened by the vision and the fairies. He didn’t throw the dirk. So Robert Kirk – the man with second site - faded away… forever to be known as the Minister of the Fairy Queen. People believe that his soul is trapped inside the tall Scots Pine tree at the top of Doon Hill – The tree is no known as “The Minister’s Pine.” Such a mystery. His old manse sits just up from the graveyard. They both face Doon Hill –known now as the Fairy Knowe. Fairy knowe is a Scottish term. The Irish use the term “rath” as you hear from Carmel to refer to small hills where the fairies live. A fairy knowe in Scotland is typically a small hillock, often wooded with mature deciduous trees. There is also some sort of archaeological feature – a slab, a well or as on Doon Hill – a tree. The fairy knowes are entrances into a mystical realm. A private domain of the fairies that is fiercely protected. These places were especially “active” during liminal times – dawn and twilight. We visited the Fairy Knowe, which is Doon Hill. It’s not a huge hill or a mountain that is quickly noticed in the landscape. But it is a little unusual in that it has a little “cap” on the top.. A small bump almost like a nipple. That bump is the Minister’s Pine. The pathway to the top is clearly marked. It begins as a slow wind around the base of the hill. There is a little stopping place before the path gets too steep. In that place is a fairy cottage that someone carved out of an oak stump. The stump is taller than a man – maybe 6 and half feet. It’s perfectly carved to make a very tall fairy house complete with a doors and windows – front steps, roof shingles and a chimney. It sits in a small oak grove. Young oak saplings cover the ground. People have left tokens – crystals, stones, little objects – all around the house. Many have pushed coins into the stump – so you see rows and rows of coins half embedded in the wood – reminders of fairy pilgrims who stopped at this little fairy cottage. There’s another stump that has been carved into a large mushroom – also with half visible coins pushed into it. At the top of the hill, The Minister’s Pine is evident. It’s right in the middle of the clearing and covered with ribbons, rags, notes, and other tokens left behind. There are similar tokens on the surrounding trees. There are also clusters of sticks and wood shaped into little mounds – kind of like building a cairn with wood. Children have left notes with wishes on them. One that I saw said “More Legos” another said, “I wish for a cupcake every Monday.” It’s a powerful spot. People are naturally quiet there. I shot a little video near the Fairy cottage and got a little dancing green light in the lower portion of the screen. It could have been caused by the rays of the sun … or not. Doon Hill is a worthy visit for those who love thin places. I’ve included links to the walking routes around the hill. The entire experience takes about two hours. With Welsh and Irish blood, it seems only natural that Beck was going to be drawn to all things Celtic – everything from the Celtic artwork and mythology, Druidic reverence for nature and trees, tales of banshees, wraiths and faeries, to the musical instruments and haunting singing-styles. There is definitely a strong Celtic thread in Beck Siàn’s music – even when singing Australian songs and modern compositions. Related to English singer Kate Bush, it was her influence and artistic inspiration (as well as having a talented artist for a father) that sparked Beck's own desire to dance, sing and create. So we're incredibly proud to be able to bring you this astounding example of her music, with Moss! Be transported along with us into strange and fey realms.... You can find out more about Beck Siàn and where to get hold of her fantastic music on her Contributor Page or on her website.   Dance of the Satyrs by Daemonia Nymphe What a performance, what stage presence and what an astounding sound! Demonia Nymphe are in a class of their own! Daemonia Nymphe is an esoteric ensemble formed in Greece. Their founder, Spyros Giasafakis, is the first artist worldwide to compose and perform improvisations on ancient Greek instruments, such as Kithara, Lyra and Varvitos, handcrafted with design and materials authentic to their epoch. Accompanied by Evi Stergiou and others they provide us with a complete audio and visual spectacular that really does evoke the Satyrs and Fauns of Elder Times! Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. They say: "Dragons & Unicorns is a made to order costumers based in the UK. Set up in 2006 by myself, "A J" Machin and my daughter Natalie, the company was created after we met Richard Taylor & Tania Rodger, co-owners of Weta Workshop, at the Fellowship Festival in 2005. Richard and Tania were very impressed when they saw Steve dressed in King Théoden's war armour which we had built and said that we were "incredibly talented people". This was all the inspiration we needed to create and re-create costumes for like-minded people, at affordable prices. " The rest.. as they say.. is history! You can find out more about these amazing costumiers on their website.   Andrasta by Jonathan Kershaw Bizarre Tales "'Too medieval to be folk; too folk to be rock; too rock to be medieval...!' Jonathan is a guitarist/songwriter originally from Yorkshire in northern England but now based on the south coast. Although known in various areas for his rock playing, he has quietly been applying his talents to an altogether different sound. In his early 20s, Jonathan relocated for a number of years to Somerset in the Southwest of the UK. This was quite a rural area and provided his first insight into folk and Celtic style music. Andrasta (Andraste) was the Romano-Celtic goddess of war. Her name means the "Invincible One". Andrasta was a patron goddess of the Iceni tribe. It was said that Boudicca, the British warrior queen prayed to Andrasta, before going into battle the against her Roman foes. It is believed that the goddess received human sacrifices. [source] Queen Boudicca by John Opie Acoustic Goth A quick mention that both Jonathan Kershaw and Beck Siàn are touring together with a collection of their music with a Beautiful Ghosts and Bizarre Tales tour!
