In this episode we talk about how the Bible is a means to the end of knowing Jesus more intimately, and we look at one specific practice we can do to approach the Scriptures this way.NET footnote on Psalm 23:6 and the word "follow" (or "pursue"): "The use of רָדַף (radaf, “pursue, chase”) with טוֹב וָחֶסֶד (tov vakhesed, “goodness and faithfulness”) as subject is ironic. This is the only place in the entire OT where either of these nouns appears as the subject of this verb רָדַף (radaf, “pursue”). This verb is often used to describe the hostile actions of enemies. One might expect the psalmist's enemies (see v. 5) to chase him, but ironically God's “goodness and faithfulness” (which are personified and stand by metonymy for God himself) pursue him instead. The word “pursue” is used outside of its normal context in an ironic manner and creates a unique, but pleasant word picture of God's favor (or a kind God) “chasing down” the one whom he loves."Scriptures referenced:Matthew 15:8John 17:3John 6:63Psalm 127:1Psalm 27:8Matthew 11:28Psalm 138:3Psalm 9:1-2Psalm 8:3-4Psalm 1:2-3Psalm 18:28-29Psalm 51:10Psalm 30:11-12Psalm 13:1-6Psalm 10:1Psalm 27:10Psalm 7:1-2Psalm 46:1-3Psalm 147:10-11Psalm 143:7-12Psalm 63:1-4, 8Psalm 139:1-16Psalm 23**CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS**I said the guy who disciples me had me write on the front cover, "I read this book to know Jesus more." In this episode we do a brief overview of Ruth and draw out three truths.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 21: "I never knew youEpisode 24: The GospelEpisode 31: "Until I went into the sanctuary of God"Quotes used in this episode:NET footnote from Matthew 22:24: "The brother of a man who died without a son had an obligation to marry his brother's widow. This served several purposes: It provided for the widow in a society where a widow with no children to care for her would be reduced to begging, and it preserved the name of the deceased, who would be regarded as the legal father of the first son produced from that marriage."NET footnote from Ruth 2:3: "The text is written from Ruth's limited perspective. As far as she was concerned, she randomly picked a spot in the field. But God was providentially at work and led her to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who, as a near relative of Elimelech, was a potential benefactor.""God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them" (Pastor John Piper)."This is a BIG message in a SHORT story. It shows how God is constructing his grand story out of the small, seemingly inconsequential stories of everyday people. This little story is intentionally framed at the beginning and end by the larger storyline of the Bible. Ruth shows how God is at work in the day to day activities of average people. All the characters face life's normal challenges (death, moving, lack of financial resources, familial responsibilities, etc.) and find God is weaving a story of redemption out of all the details. The Book of Ruth encourages us to view our day-to-day lives as part of God's bigger plan for our lives and world" (The Bible Project)."The characters talk about God a few times, but the narrator hardly ever mentions God explicitly doing anything in the story. This is its subtle brilliance because God's providence is at work behind every scene, weaving together the lives of the characters" (The Bible Project)."Endurance is faith expressed over time" (Pastor J. D. Greear).Scriptures referenced:Ruth 1:1-5Ruth 1:15-18Ruth 2:1-17Leviticus 19:9-10Leviticus 23:22Deuteronomy 24:19-22Ruth 2:20-23Ruth 3:1-13Deuteronomy 25:5-10Matthew 22:23-33Ruth 3:16-18I WANT TO BE DISCIPLEDI am on staff with another ministry called Mentoring Men for the Master (M3). Luke 4:1-2 says, "And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry." It's possible based on this passage that the enemy tempted Jesus not only at the end of the forty days, but also during the forty days. Nevertheless, it doesn't undermine, diminish, or change the point that the enemy struck at a moment of vulnerability.Support the showIf you feel so led, you can support the podcast by clicking HERE or by clicking the "Support the show" button above. Justification has two parts: (1) Being declared free of blame, acquitted of sin—not guilty. Believers are justified because Jesus Christ personally assumed the guilt for our sin on the cross; (2) God declares the person righteous, that is, placed in a position of right-standing with Him. A person may not be made righteous by his personal behavior, no matter how good, or by the declaration of any other human being.""There is a battle raging today throughout the world in the heads and hearts of multitudes of people, who just will not accept the fact that they can do absolutely nothing to justify themselves before God!" Today we discuss the importance of paying close attention to the things that the Lord reveals to us and not forgetting them.Other episodes referenced in this one:Episode 7: Meditating on the Scriptures, Part 1Click HERE to find the Experiencing God Bible Study.Quotes used in this episode:"When the disciples were with Him alone, they asked Him why He spoke in parables. He explained to them that only those with receptive hearts were permitted to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. A mystery in the NT is a truth hitherto unknown that can only be know through special revelation." (William MacDonald -- Believer's Bible Commentary)“Divine truth is not something we 'discover;' it is revealed by the Holy Spirit of God. As such, no other reality in the Christian life is as important as being filled with the Spirit.” (Henry Blackaby -- Experiencing the Spirit: The Power of Pentecost Every Day)"Have you ever received a word from the Lord that gave you the exact direction you needed? If so, let me guess what happened next. Suddenly - BOOM! It seemed like all hell broke loose! The craziest circumstances erupted, seeming to directly challenge and assault that word you had just received from God! If I've just described what you've gone through or what you are going through right now, be encouraged! You must be right on track! A spiritual fight usually does occur when you've been specially illuminated to the plan God has for your life...If you have been in this place I'm talking about - or if this is exactly where you are right now - then be encouraged! This is probably your clearest signal that you've received a real word from the Lord. You must be right on track, because the devil is terribly concerned about what will happen if you act on what God has revealed to you. Don't back down. Don't surrender to the enemy's vicious lies in your mind, his attacks against your body, his challenges to your finances, or his assaults on your relationships. Regardless of how much resistance he tries to bring against you, don't you dare back up on that word God gave you! If you hadn't received a true word from the Lord, there would be nothing for the devil to challenge! The fight you face is the greatest evidence you're right on track! Just hang on, and don't give up! You're clearly headed in the right direction!" Today we talk about the importance of having a right view of God and living our lives in continual awareness of His presence and love.Other episodes mentioned in this one:Episode 24: The GospelThis episode is named after this song. I would encourage you to listen to it and specifically note the chorus in light of our discussion today. Here is another song about how amazing the Lord's heart towards us is. This second song is also relevant to the Brother Lawrence quote I read.Quotes from today:“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” (A.W. Tozer)"Brother Lawrence felt it was a great delusion to think that the times of prayer ought to differ from the other times." (The Practice of the Presence of God)"My King is full of mercy and goodness. Far from chastising me, He embraces me with love. He makes me eat at His table. He serves me with His own hand and gives me the key to His treasures. He converses and delights Himself with me incessantly in a thousand and a thousand ways. And He treats me in all respects as His favorite."
