A Young Leader's Guide to Changing the World. It's all about inspiring young people to hold onto their big dreams and take action instead of waiting for the "right time." Josh kicks things off by tackling why so many young people stop dreaming big—disillusionment and distraction. He shares how well-meaning advice from parents, teachers, and mentors often pushes kids toward "safe" career paths, causing them to abandon their passions. Add in the constant stream of media, and many end up living vicariously through others instead of pursuing their own purpose. One moment that really hit home for Josh was his daughter's kindergarten graduation, where kids boldly declared dreams of becoming pop stars, dancers, or veterinarians. Fast forward a few years, and those dreams often shrink under the weight of practicality and expectations. But Josh insists that young people are naturally wired to dream—and his book is about keeping that fire alive. At its core, What Are You Waiting For? is for those who feel stuck, cynical, or unsure about their future. Josh's message is clear: You were created for a purpose, and with faith, anything is possible. He especially wants to encourage young leaders to step up now, not later. Josh shares his own story—from growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, to moving to Australia at 16, which challenged him to grow in independence and faith. Later, at Boise Bible College, he felt called to ministry, leading to 15 years of experience as a youth pastor and eventually planting Hill City Church in Boise. The conversation also covers Hill City's evolution—from a satellite campus to an independent church, merging with an older congregation during the pandemic, and even launching a satellite campus of their own. Josh paints a vivid picture of their historic downtown Boise building, complete with stained glass and deep community roots. Josh also highlights a growing challenge: fewer young people entering church ministry. He hopes his book will be a tool for church leaders to raise up the next generation, encouraging them to step into their calling now instead of waiting for “someday.” One key idea? Young people's greatest strength can be recognizing their own weaknesses—it makes them open to learning and growth. Ultimately, Josh hopes his book will inspire at least one person to step into ministry or intentional service. He sees it as a practical guide for youth groups, internships, and mentorship programs—not just to inspire but to equip. As the episode wraps up, Josh speaks directly to young people feeling lost or discouraged. He's been there and wants them to know—God has a plan for you. Don't wait. Believe in your potential, take action, and trust that God will work through you. His final message? Hope, purpose, and the courage to step into the calling that's already yours.
In this week's episode, Nicole shares a recent sermon from Hill City Church on John 3:16, focusing on the first four words, "For God so loved." She emphasizes the importance of foundational knowledge in faith. Nicole explains that true love (agape) is unconditional and self-sacrificing, contrasting it with self-preservation. She highlights that God's love is expansive and transformative, urging believers to reflect and act on this love. The sermon also includes a personal testimony from Logan about his faith journey and the importance of community support during challenging times. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16 THIS WEEK'S BIBLE STUDY RESOURCES: Sign up for Nicole's newsletter and get regular encouragement straight to your inbox: https://nicoleunice.com/realtalk/ Help! For Zack Blair, walking in unconditional love is the foundation of joyful fatherhood. In this episode, he shares personal experiences and practical examples to show why connecting with your kids matters more than trying to be perfect. And ultimately, how it leads to a parenting approach grounded in thankfulness and love. Key Takeaways Walking in unconditional love is the source of joy and thankfulness. How can your children one day remember your heart if you are not intentional to connect with theirs? Use your hands to express love, not produce pain. You need other men in your corner—not just for you, but also for your kids. Zack Blair Zack Blair is an author and the founding pastor of Hill City Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Lauren, have been married for 17 years, have three children, and are foster parents. Key Quotes 35:00 - "An apology, it goes so far with [your children]., Hey, dad's imperfect, but he's trying, and he's taking ownership in the areas that that he missed it. I tell my kids, I'm not going to be a perfect father. I'm going to do some things great. You're going to look back and you're going to say, man, that wasn't so great. Whatever we did great, carry it on. But whatever we didn't do great, fix it and keep on getting better." 39:53 - "When you hold your child and you look at them and you feel the pain of, maybe I didn't receive this or I don't know that I received that unconditional love. In every man where we look back on our life with regret, that's an area that if we dig deep and we we allow the Lord to heal and we open up to the right people, that will change our family's trajectory forever. A lot of guys will get stuck in the normal things that society talks about to distract us, but there's a part of us that's unhealed. If we can focus on that part and with kindness and curiosity, just go there and ask the Lord, Lord, when did I accept this lie? Or when did I develop this belief about myself? Or when did I experience this pain and God where were You in those moments? Even with help through counseling and and pastoral guidance, even when the Lord heals that it'll change everything and you will be set free to be the dad that you really want to be. So go there. Be brave enough to go there." Welcome back to the How to Study the Bible podcast. We have something a little bit different for you today. We are in the holiday season and getting ready to round down the year. So we're going to be sharing a few different things with you. We decided to post a few of my past sermons here as much as we can as well. Today you'll hear a sermon I preached this month at Hill City Church here in Richmond, Virginia. Pastor and author Charlie Dawes is an ideal guest for Next Step Leadership. Chris has known Charlie for many years and is excited to see all the work Charlie has done. Charlie serves as a pastor of Hill City Church and is the author of Simple Prayer: Learning to Speak to God with Ease. Charlie tells his story about growing up in church and being mentored well by his pastor. While many congregations in today's culture get attention based on numerical growth, young leaders need mentors. Pastor Basil Savoie was that type of true pastor for Charlie. Those years helped Charlie become the servant leader God wanted him to be. Listen to his story. Look for those who can mentor you and those you can mentor. Do not miss these important times.https://hillcitydc.com/who-we-arehttps://www.amazon.com/Simple-Prayer-Learning-Speak-Ease/dp/0830844813https://www.instagram.com/charlie_dawes/?hl=enhttps://twitter.com/charlie_dawes?lang=enhttps://www.facebook.com/hillcitychurchdc/

Pastor James Hobson visits us from Hill City Church in Lynchburg, VA, on our fourth Sunday of Advent. Because of Jesus, we can have peace with ourselves, peace with God, and peace with humanity. This is only possible because Jesus went to war for our peace; the kind of peace that surpasses all understanding.
