now there's a live dog. Did you watch Goodfellas back in 1990 and think “Hey, this should be a wacky comedy with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin”? If so, you're in luck. You're in so much luck.Like Goodfellas, My Blue Heaven is loosely based on the story of Henry Hill, the mobster who went into the witness protection program. Goodfellas ends with a vision of Hill standing in front of an dull suburban tract home, haunted and disappointed, an anonymous schnook. My Blue Heaven starts at that very moment, as Steve Martin's smooth criminal slides into suburbia like a streak of mercury. There, restless and bored, he meets his case handler, a buttoned-down bureaucrat played by Rick Moranis. From that point on the film becomes a perverse buddy comedy, as Martin teaches Moranis to loosen his buttons a bit, and Moranis teaches Martin… well, nothing really. But he writes an extremely entertaining book! Listen to Adam and Aidan talk about sartorial tips and merengue lessons below, or find us on your podmaker of choice.

The by-election in Runcorn & Helsby has sent shockwaves through Westminster — not because Reform UK squeaked to victory, but because what once looked like a protest vote now smells like a political realignment. In this special weekend Despatch, Conservative Home's Henry Hill unpacks why Reform's close win changes the narrative, and why the Tories are running out of excuses. Is Nigel Farage building a right-wing version of the Lib Dems? Could Reform become an entrenched force in post-industrial Britain? And does Robert Jenrick have what it takes to hold the Conservative Party together? Brace yourself — the electoral map is shifting. And this might just be the beginning. Hosted on Acast. Despite this being the week that Kemi Badenoch finally showed some steel in PMQs, it's Robert Jenrick who has been stealing the headlines. That's for lots of reasons – mainly his comments about a potential Tory Reform pact, which he clarified on Good Morning Britain this morning, saying: ‘Kemi Badenoch and I are on exactly the same page. Kemi has been very clear there won't be a pact with Reform, and I've said time and again that I want to put Reform out of business. I want to send Nigel Farage back to retirement.' This follows leaked footage which surfaced this week from a student event in late March, where he appeared to suggest that he would back a pact to join forces with Farage. Elsewhere, he had a big win when Yvette Cooper announced that the government will publish migrant crime league tables – a policy he has pushed for. Is he the prince across the water? Or do we need to give Kemi a break? Oscar Edmondson speaks to James Heale and Henry Hill, deputy editor at Conservative Home. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

Former Gambino family mobster Lou Ferrante joined us for an episode about his three volumes of research on the Mafia. He spoke of the alleged role of the Mob in the JFK assassination just as the files were about to be opened and he and Michael Krasny explored the ethos of the Mob -- the law of Omerta and the past frequency of so called "whackings," as well as the perks of being a mobster and such Cosa Nostra figures as John Gotti, Henry Hill and Joey Gallo. They spoke of politicians and the Mob and how the mob is portrayed in film and television and they exchanged humorous narratives as Ferrante told a funny personal tale and Krasny told a joke. Ferrante spoke of his prison experiences and how he became a writer while incarcerated, including the influence on him of historian Barbara Tuchman. Krasny asked Ferrante of analogies he made in print between the Kennedys and the Medicis and the episode concluded with Krasny drawing out a humorous story from Ferrante about Cuba, President John F Kennedy, Ian Fleming and the CIA's Allen Dulles, and asking Ferrante about the ultimate fate of Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa and what drives and inspires Ferrante to write.

This is a public episode. Glenn Fine's career-long crusade against corruption might have its roots in his college days. As a point guard for the Harvard basketball team, Fine had his personal best game on Dec. 16, 1978, the same day he interviewed for–and received–a Rhodes scholarship. He put up 19 points against Boston College, including eight steals, and the team nearly eeked out a win against the favored Boston players. A remarkable day.   What Fine would later discover was that mobsters had bribed Boston College players to play worse to keep the game tight and not cover the point spread. Henry Hill and Jimmy Burke–later portrayed by Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro in the movie Goodfellas were part of the point-shaving scheme.   Fine would later be drafted in the 10th round of the NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, but it was the anti-corruption law that stuck, not basketball.   Fine took a job out of law school as a prosecutor in Washington, D.C., and joined the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Justice in 1995. He would go on to serve as Inspector General at the DOJ from 2000 to 2011, then at the Department of Defense from 2015 until 2020. He was one of the five inspectors general fired by then-President Donald Trump in what the Washington Post referred to as the "slow-motion Friday night massacre of inspectors general."   But what do inspectors general do? It's a question Fine wants to answer with his book, Watchdogs: Inspectors General and the Battle for Honest and Accountable Government. In this episode of the Modern Law Library, Fine and the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles discuss the function, history and importance of the position, along with ways Fine believes government oversight can be improved.   As of the book's publication in 2024, there are 74 inspector general offices at the federal level, with more than 14,000 employees. As the IG for the Department of Defense, Fine oversaw the largest office, with some 1,700 employees. Inspectors general conduct independent, non-partisan oversight investigations into waste, fraud, misconduct and best practices, and deliver their reports and recommendations to Congress and the agencies involved. The IGs cannot enforce the adoption of recommendations, but their work acts as the "sunshine" for disinfection, Fine says.   One major recommendation Fine makes in Watchdogs is that an inspector general be established for the U.S. Supreme Court and the federal judiciary, who could perhaps file their reports to the chief justice or the head of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Fine points to judicial ethics concerns and polls finding public trust in the Supreme Court at historic lows, and argues one way to increase public trust is through the transparency provided by an inspector general.   Also in this episode, Fine offers advice for anyone considering a career in public service. Rawles and Fine discuss stories of his own investigations, including evaluating the claims of a whistleblowing scientist at the FBI laboratory and looking into how the infamous double-agent spy Robert Hanssen was able to fool his FBI superiors and pass intel to Soviets and Russians.

Writer Nora Ephron was married to Henry Hill biographer Nicholas Pileggi during the writing of Wiseguy and took real stories of Hill's time in witness protection as inspiration for her screenplay. We talk about the Goodfellas connections, the crazy casting process that at one point had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing mobster Vinnie Antonelli, Joan Cusack's excellent work as prosecutor Hannah Stubbs - who holds her own toe to toe with Martin's Antonelli and Moranis's Barney Coopersmith, the difficulties of finding good Italian food in certain parts of the country, and the idea of a heaven populated by mobsters in witness protection. Billy Batts' murder is one of the most notorious events in mafia history, symbolizing the violent consequences of crossing the wrong person in the mob world. Batts, a respected associate of the Gambino crime family, made the fatal mistake of insulting Tommy DeSimone, a volatile member of the Lucchese family, during a celebratory party. This seemingly minor slight set off a brutal chain of events, with DeSimone, Jimmy Burke, and Henry Hill savagely beating Batts, stuffing him into the trunk of a car, and ultimately killing him in cold blood. His murder wasn't just about personal revenge—it violated the mafia's sacred rules and became a deadly example of what happens when power, ego, and respect clash within the mob.The fallout from Batts' death had far-reaching consequences. His murder helped expose the inner workings of New York's criminal underworld and contributed to the eventual downfall of key mafia figures like Burke and DeSimone. Decades later, Billy Batts' death is still remembered as a pivotal moment in mob history, illustrating the fragile, dangerous nature of life within organized crime. His story serves as a grim reminder that in the mafia, the line between loyalty and betrayal is thin, and crossing it often leads to violent and tragic consequences.(commercial at 8:56)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

It's one of the most iconic scenes in one of the greatest movies in American history, and it has almost nothing to do with the rest of the plot. It's mob capo Paulie Cicero, played by the late Paul Sorvino. He's in a minimum-security prison with the rest of the wise guys. They've bribed the guards so they can have all the stuff they need for a proper Italian dinner, which they are about to cook themselves: Vinnie's making the tomato sauce, his meatballs a mixture of veal, beef, pork, and too many onions; Johnny Dio's cooking T-bones in a pan over a portable electric burner; then Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, shows up with fresh Italian loaves, prosciutto, salami, and a bottle of J&B Scotch. This week we are taking an opportunity to explore some songs which would normally be outside our time frame by following the soundtrack to the movie “Goodfellas.”  This Martin Scorsese film is a mafia story told from the view of Henry Hill in his book “Wiseguy:  Life In a Mafia Family.”The movie follows Henry Hill as he looks back on his life beginning during a time when he looked up to the Wise Guys and gangsters who ran his neighborhood.  Hill starts his narrative as a child in 1955 and continues until 1980 when Hill becomes an FBI informant on the Luccese crime family and enters the witness protection program. The songs from that film provide the backdrop of different times in Hill's life.  Rat Pack hits reflect scenes with the gangsters, while songs from the Who and Cream reflect more disjointed times.Hill was paid $480,000 for his contribution to the movie.  Hill passed away in 2012.Wayne takes us through this time spanning soundtrack this week on our podcast, because this gives us the opportunity to cover some songs which are not normally in our album "window," while still giving us a window into a popular film and into the happenings of the early 90's. Rags to Riches by Tony BennettThis crooner song is used as the backdrop when Henry Hill reflects on his childhood and states, "As far as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster - being a ganster is better than being the President of the US."  This sets the table for the remainder of the film. Then He Kissed Me by The CrystalsPhil Spector co-wrote this song and was instrumental in increasing the popularity of the Crystals before he moved on to work with The Ronnettes.  This track is used as the backdrop of a long take where Hill and his date go to the Copacabana restaurant through the back door to a table set on the dance floor for them.Ain't That a Kick In the Head by Dean MartinRat Pack member and ultra-cool crooner known for his roasts and singing with a martini glass, Martin's song is the perfect fit to a montage of mob life.  Henry's wife Karen narrarates this montage.  The inspiration for the song may have been a film starring Martin and Frank Sinatra, in which Sinatra's character says, "ain't that a kick in the head." during a poker game.Magic Bus by the WhoThis Who song is used in the movie during a scene of frantic, intoxicated driving where Hill believes that he is being tracked by the Feds. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Troll 2”This film may be one of the best "worst" movies made, but it was in the theaters at the time, so we thought we'd brush off the theme and trot it out this week.STAFF PICKS:Cradle of Love by Billy IdolRob kicks off our staff picks this week with a single off Idol's fourth studio album "Charmed Life."  Idol was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident earlier in the year, and his appearances in the David Fincher video include head shots and close-ups from the waist up, obscuring the fact that he was still recovering from his leg injuries. Praying for Time by George MichaelLynch features the lead single from Michael's second solo album, "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1."  This somber, contemplative tone is a departure from his more pop-oriented hits.  Michael addresses poverty, injustice, and the human condition, concluding that some things can only be healed with time.Tick Tock by The Vaughan BrothersBruce's staff pick is off "Family Style," the only studio album featuring brother Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan.  The song lyrics about the need to recognize that time is short are more poignant, given that the album was released a month after Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash.Waiting for the Angels by The DarksideWayne brings us one of his Manchester sound groups.  The Darkside is out of central England and have a neo-psychedelia sound with heavily distorted guitar and synthesizers.  The song lyrics are about a guy seeing lots of women in life, but not making a connection.  He's waiting for angels to bring the right one his way. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Guitar Voodoo by The DarksideWe finish up this week's podcast by double-dipping on the Manchester sound with this instrumental.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Henry Hill was an associate of the Lucchese crime family in New York City, known for his involvement in organized crime, including the infamous Lufthansa heist of 1978. Despite not being a "made" member due to his Irish-Italian heritage, Hill rose through the ranks due to his versatility and willingness to engage in various illegal activities, such as hijacking, loan sharking, and drug trafficking. His arrest in 1980 on narcotics charges led him to turn informant, providing key insights into the operations of the Lucchese family, which resulted in significant convictions and his entry into the Witness Protection Program. However, Hill struggled to adapt to life outside crime, continuing illegal activities and eventually being expelled from the program. He later became a public figure through the book "Wiseguy" and the film "Goodfellas," which dramatized his life, highlighting both the allure and dangers of the mob lifestyle. Hill's story serves as a cautionary tale about the far-reaching consequences of a life entangled in organized crime and the difficulty of leaving that life behind.(commercial at 9:30)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Goodfellas (stylized GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. It is a film adaptation of the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy by Pileggi. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, the film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980. Scorsese initially titled the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; he and Pileggi later changed the title to Goodfellas. To prepare for their roles in the film, De Niro, Pesci and Liotta often spoke with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals wherein Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked most and put them into a revised script, which the cast worked from during principal photography. Goodfellas premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, where Scorsese was awarded with Silver Lion for Best Director, and was released in the United States on September 19, 1990, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was made on a budget of $25 million and grossed $47 million. Goodfellas received widespread acclaim upon release: the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes calls it "arguably the high point of Martin Scorsese's career". The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor. The film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best Director. Additionally, Goodfellas was named the year's best film by various critics' groups. Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, particularly in the gangster genre. In 2000, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.[5][6] Its content and style have been emulated in numerous other pieces of media.[7
