This week, I sit down for a long overdue conversation with the one and only Andy Kwaitkowski. Andy has been the head brewer over at Hitchhiker Brewing since the beginning, and this week, he stops by the studio to chat about the fantastic craft beer scene that Pittsburgh has been cultivating over this last decade. This is my first conversation with one of the big dawgs from the beer world and I was happy to have a journeyman like Andy in to let me ask him apprentice level questions. This week, we talk about Andy's introduction to beer, how he got involved with brewing, his transition from being a home brewer to becoming a “professional,” the good work he does with the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild, and so much more. Thanks for listening. Annihilation – It's a Metaphor

Annihilation is based upon a 2014 novel of the same name. And it is director Alex Garland's follow up to his highly acclaimed directorial debut Ex Machina. Like that title, Annihilation is much more than the sum of its parts. Certainly, it is a Sci-Fi film where a team of women head into the unknown, the Shimmer as its called, to identify the source of the invading entity. But that is just the surface. Annihilation is also about marital infidelity and the cost our decisions have on the ones we love. The setting is more a metaphorical trapping for how such things irrevocably change us. Yes, listeners, this is highbrow fare, and it mostly works. The Shimmer provides a haunting setting, one that tests our explorers in a myriad of ways. The deeper they journey, the more of themselves they lose. Plus, there's a gnarly mutant bear that wrecks shit. Anyway, Annihilation, despite outstanding reviews, did poorly at the box office. It grossed just $43.1 million on a budget estimated to be as high as $55 million. It's unfortunate because like all good Sci-Fi, it's asking you to look beyond just what's on the screen.  Now, sit back, indulge in a Triple Shakes from Hitchhiker Brewing, and don't watch that recording! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are battling our inner demons in the form of amorphous aliens! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – One way in. Brian, a Master Cicerone® as well a key account manager for Founders Brewing, tells us more about the Cicerone® process and the different levels of certification.  After he gets a little more personal and tells us about this love of horror movies. Ryan tells us about his fear of snakes and how he met a guy named "Snakeguy" in line at Dancing Gnome.  Though he was super nice guy, Ryan was always scared to death of his snake (but loves his pretzels).  (EDIT:  Robert "Snakeguy" Habegger passed away shortly after this podcast was recorded.  The entire FBH community would like to extend our condolences to his family.  Robert was a great man who will be missed by not only the FBH community, but the entire Pittsburgh craft beer community.  May he rest in peace.) Following the snake talk, Ryan asks Brian what his first craft beer was.  You'll never guess what it was, but it's a great one.  Brian then gives us some tips on tasting beer before they dive in to a discussion about Hitchhiker Brewing in Pittsburgh.  (Believe it or not, but Brian and Andy worked together at one time in a non-beer capacity). Brian then tells about his love of German-style beers and a discussion of lactose comes up.  The three talk intellectual property theft for a few minutes (and how long it can last) before diving in to their love of Shubrew's food. Once we hit the "Drunken Portion" of this podcast, we start talking football and the conversation goes all over the place from there before wrapping up the show. They celebrate by sipping on Usual Chaos, or as Day puts it, “an 80’s band in a glass,” a kettle sour with blackberries and raspberries. Andy gets specific about current beer trends and how that affects his brewing choices. Midway though, the laughs come as Ed quizzes Andy and Gary about who is the more passive aggressive partner. Next, they sample a blended hop beer, or as Ed calls it, “a mystery spin on Mario Cart.” Listen in as they discuss their goals as a brewery, from national recognition to making their beer better.
