The return of Rainbow Valley – the podcast that tells the stories about the swinging decade. Episode 023 The Theft Of The Duke Of Wellington Dr No, the first big screen outing for Ian Fleming’s James Bond. Its 1962, and the movie would start to lay out a successful formula for most of the other movies that would follow in the series. Of course when we speak about Dr No, most of us will remember Bonds introduction at the casino, Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder emerging from the sea in ‘that’ bikini or the scene where the spider crawls up Sean Connery’s arm. But what about this scene….and in particular, one specific moment. James Bond and Honey Ryder have just met the evil Dr No in his underground lair. Before crushing an ornament with his metal hand and telling the pair of SPECTRE’s dastardly plan to hold the world to ransom, they are led away. As they walk up a small set of steps, Bond stops, noticing an oil painting on an easel to his right …. The painting was a portrait of Arthur Wellesly the first Duke of Wellington, painted by Francisco de Goya - and only several months before the release of Dr No it had been hanging on display in London’s National Gallery. When it was stolen however, one early August morning, it made national and international headlines. The story would develop with an unlikely villain, who like Dr No, would hold the British government to ransom. A story that would span many decades and involve a high profile court case, the introduction of a new criminal offence, and, of all things….the British tv license! Ladies and gentlemen, Rainbow Valley is proud to present the story of the theft of the Duke of Wellington. You can find us on Player FM …and anywhere you download your podcasts You can follow the podcast on Twitter @rv_podcast Join our Facebook group Or send us your thoughts and feedback to rainbowvalleypod@gmail.com #Podpals #podernfamily This has been a Stinking Pause production. How did the character of Moneypenny evolve from page to screen? In light of the news that Naomie Harris has suggested an independent Moneypenny adventure, we delve into the character of M’s long-serving secretary and the other women of the MI6 offices – both in Fleming’s work and the film adaptations. We discuss the way the characters of Loelia Ponsonby, Mary Goodnight, and Miss Moneypenny merged to form the screen incarnation of the latter and Fleming’s grappling with the reception and characterisation of women in the workplace. Along the way we wonder where the other 00s have gone, stumble into Moneypenny’s wardrobe, and upon Desmond Llewelyn’s fridge, muse on Moneypenny’s missed opportunities, Rami Malek’s least-likely character name in No Time To Die, our Netflix spin-off that will never get made, catch up with Honey Ryder and her journey through the encyclopaedia, and return to the topics of unsurprising surprise castings, the attitudes of filmmakers and treating audiences with respect. The recording took place on October 25th in the USA, Spain, and New Zealand. What can we read into the plot synopsis for Bond 25? With a little more time – and sleep – to reflect, we examine the plot synopsis that was released after the ‘Bond 25’ reveal event, asking questions about the significance and prominence of Jamaica, Italy and Norway, the mystery scientist, and how Malek’s ‘tech villain’ persona will break or conform to the mold of similar villains gone before. Along the way we discover the comedy stylings of Rory Kinnear, Craig’s USP, an absence of muscle in the Bond 25 supporting cast, SPECTRE’s awkward “fourth act”, wasted opportunities for Mr White, a curmudgeonly Felix Leiter, a bachelor party for Bond, Brosnan’s home automation nightmare, Bond’s retirement hobbies, and Honey Ryder’s Disney Princess routine. The recording took place on April 26th, 2019 in the USA, UK, and New Zealand.
This week, host Stephen B. Platt is joined by special guests Alex McVey and Anna Weir as they celebrate 55 years of James Bond films by watching 'Dr. No.' Listen in as they discuss dragons, Honey Ryder's unusual education and what roles we would play if we were cast in the next Bond film.
Following on from our recent interviews with Caroline Munro and Martine Beswick, it's time for James Bond Radio to talk about Bond Girls! We'll be going right back to Dr. No through to Live & Let Die in today's podcast talking Honey Ryder to Solitaire with all the Bond girls in between. In addition, the second round of Bond Celebrity Deathmatch comes to an end, we run the usual gauntlet of quotes, trivia and all the usual JBR goodness!
And so we come to the first Bond & Beyond review, taking a look at the film that started it all: Dr No. We reflect on the 1962 classic, picking out the tropes that are still with us today, weighing up the film's best and worst bits, analysing the villainous Dr No himself and even pondering Honey Ryder, the first of many Bond girls. As of now we'll be on a fortnightly release schedule, so keep your eyes peeled for our Spectre speculation episode in two weeks' time. You can find all our episodes at bondbeyondpod.tumblr.com and find us on Twitter via @BondBeyondPod.
This week we're joined by an unsung hero of Bond, Nikki Van Der Zyl. As a voice artist she provided the voice of some of the most iconic Bond girls of all time from Honey Ryder (...and yes that is Nikki singing Underneath the Mango Tree), to Shirley Eaton's Jill Masterson, and Thunderball's Domino. The list doesn't end there either. Nikki was involved in a total of 10 Bond films with Moonraker being her last. This is another behind the scenes interview with someone who was there from the very beginning of the cinematic Bond. You'll hear tales of hanging out on set with Gert Frobe during the filming of Goldfinger, you'll hear how she revoiced the entire female cast of Dr. No (with the exception of Moneypenny and Miss Taro) and maybe...just maybe you might even hear Nikki performing a line of Bond girl dialogue too. Enjoy :-)
Episode 3 of James Bond Radio, goes right back to where it all started on the silver screen, with our review of Dr. No. We go through the movie scene by scene, discussing everything from Honey Ryder's bikini, to our list of Dr. No related BondFacts, to just what is Dr. No doing when he peaks underneath Bond's bedsheets? Today's episode also features extracts from Chris' outraged letter to Eon Productions, after his first viewing of Quantum of Solace. Look out for episode 4 coming next friday! With their Bond podcast nearly over, Ian and Adham are less than overjoyed that the penultimate episode of For Your Ears Only is devoted to talk about the franchise's uncertain future, and the 1967 spoof spy flick Casino Royale. Where 007 is a retired knight of the realm, Vesper Lynd is actually Honey Ryder, and Le Chiffre is a minor antagonist who delights in magic tricks. Pointless plot twists, characters that take the middle third off, and a burping Woody Allen are just some of the topics discussed. Also, the feedback is fully updated, and special announcements await about next month's final installment!

For their very first edition of For Your Ears Only, Adham Fisher and Ian Wilson run through the appeal of James Bond before appraising the first film in the Bond franchise: Dr No. Is the film a bore or a masterpiece, due to its lack of conventionality? And just what do two horny Englishmen make of Honey Ryder?

The James Bond series leaps into action with guns blazing as Sean Connery spends several hours talking to British colonial officials and wandering around Jamaica looking for a clue. Then he turns up the heat and starts blasting by sneaking around an island for a while, hoping not to get captured, before getting captured. Okay, it's a little slow for what we've come to expect, but in 1962, this rocked. And even today, Miss Taro and Honey Ryder can still make your palms sweat. I compare the film to the book thruout and look for motifs, iconic elements, and firsts. I compare it to the Flint and Austin Powers movies that it inspired and to other Bond flicks. Note: Some comments are shaken while others are stirred. Somehow I make the bizarre mistake of saying that Sean Connery appeared in Zulu Dawn.
