Claire Danes delivers an emotionally gripping performance in her latest limited series, The Beast in Me. Starring alongside an unflinching Matthew Rhys, the Emmy–winning actor reveals why she had Rhys change his character's name from the original script. Danes also shares what it was like to reunite with executive producer Howard Gordon after their hit series Homeland, her early obsession with Madonna and John Hughes movies, and how her role in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines helped Danes “click back” into acting after spending two years at Yale. Video episodes are available on the Still Watching Netflix YouTube Channel. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

“And I think there's also just something about an unfettered or uncensored id that is so captivating. We all have that fantasy of doing exactly what we want with no consequences and sort of letting that go. I think when you see an athlete at the peak of their game, doing that embodied thing and living that dream, or when someone has actually done horrible things that you would never allow yourself to do, there is a fascination there. I had one teacher who said, "Anyone who drives you crazy or that you just cannot stand in life, put them in a play or put them in a scene, and the audience will love them." If someone has really gotten under your skin and you just cannot stand them, and you have a visceral reaction—like, "I just hate this person"—make them a character, and the audience will make them everyone's favorite character. There is something to that.” - Daniel PearleToday, we explore the dark psychology of obsession, guilt, and the thin line between predator and victim. Our guests are two of television's most accomplished architects of high-stakes drama and moral ambiguity: Howard Gordon, the showrunner and executive producer whose work defined a generation of thrillers with 24 and the multi-award-winning Homeland; and Daniel Pearle, an executive producer and writer who brings a distinct, penetrating depth from his background as a celebrated playwright and his work on series like Accused and American Crime Story..Episode Websitewww.creativeprocess.info/podInstagram:@creativeprocesspodcast

“How do you render something interior filmically? How do you communicate the details of the lost child, of the amount of time of the stuck creative process, and even the exterior, or the externalization of the house as a kind of hellish thing that's barely staying together—literally flooding with waste—and that you can't afford? So those are the details that we had to carefully figure out how to weave. But, you know, when you look at the first 10 minutes, it could be a horror movie. From that moment, a lot can happen. But what's important about it is that it sets the table for what does happen.” -Howard GordonToday, we explore the dark psychology of obsession, guilt, and the thin line between predator and victim. After the series worst episode, Space, and some notes from Fox, Gordon and Gansa got to work on bringing the episode back into focus as Mulder goes rogue and infiltrates a UFO crash site that's being recovered by a covert army operation. When he's inevitably caught he meets UFO enthusiast and fellow paranoia enjoyer, Max Fennig, as the pilot of the downed UFO sneaks around the crash site, killing soldiers, while waiting for the mother ship to arrive and pick them up.Not exactly a mythology episode but not exactly not a mythology episode, Fallen Angel brings the series back into paranoid focus to remind everyone that it's about UFOs, aliens, and conspiracy. We also break down this week in pop culture and the news as usual.

“The question of who's good and who's bad is always front of mind for me because my basic goal is to get to the place where no one is good or bad; everybody is in an unspeakably complicated situation. From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. You're not telling a single story; you're telling a world. You're inviting people into a world and asking them to live there with you and these characters for a period of time. The best I can do is build a world where people grapple with these important questions and try their best. All I can expect from people and from myself is that we're trying to do something larger than ourselves.”Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer ofNetflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. She's worked with television's leading showrunners, including Shonda Rhymes, Terence Winter, Steven Levinson, and Howard Gordon. Her career began working on Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing which has led to projects such as the hit Showtime series Homeland, ABC's long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and HBO's Vinyl, which was co-created by Martin Scorsese. This week we are staring through walls to look at Hollywood rats while we discuss “Surekill”! We're talking Terence O'Hara and his telescoping eyes, maybe settle on a supremely-silly team name for Doggett and Scully, boo at Uncle Jack's appearance, talk about the importance of having an attack child on your side, the real story of Howard Gordon's departure, and how much Scully cares about safety first, but only for her. We note Doggett's excitement over drug rip-offs, the exciting reappearance of Craddock Marine Bank, do some investigation to see if James Franco is in this one, shake our heads at Doggett's anti-twin prejudice, and get really excited about a giant lighter for a while. "I think that we like to look at somebody who's in a leadership position and say, look at what they did. And we don't recognize the fact that there's a huge team of people creating this thing that we attribute to an individual. And certainly, that's the case in political environments. I didn't work in Washington for a long time, but I worked there a little bit, and I very much got a sense of the incredible talent of a group of people who are standing behind somebody who's an elected leader, helping them make decisions and in research and the forming of strategies. We're attributing to one mind what is the work of 20. I think that's what so many of the characters in that place are bringing to Kate Wyler (played by Keri Russell). And it takes her a while to kind of figure out does she trust them? Does she think that they're really value-added? Is she going to have to do this by herself? Sometimes it takes time to embrace that and be able to utilize the skills that are around you, but nobody does it by themselves. I think that's a myth."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. And for the most part, they're smart people with integrity and good values, and they're good at what they do, and they just want to help people in their own country and around the world. And even with good people at the helm, it can all go to hell and that, to me, is what's most interesting. I always had a hard time reading the newspaper. I found it very overwhelming in the suffering that you're seeing described every single day. And for me, coming at it through the lens of what's a story that I can relate to that I can follow a character through that they're surviving. For me was a kind of a way to come at it and not have to turn away from the darkness."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. "Kamala Harris is absolutely an influence on the character as is Susan Rice, as is Samantha Power, as is Condoleeza Rice. But I think that all of those women sort of came to positions of power at a time when, for the most part, you know, they were the only woman in the room, in a lot of different environments, and that kind of navigating of being 'one of the guys' and also being there as a woman, I think is a particularly elaborate challenge. I think you're a little bit expected to be both at the same time, which is sometimes possible and sometimes not."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell.
