Released on Christmas Day Month continues/ends with another Leo joint - The Wolf of Wall Street! Ben and Patrick discuss the decade-long debate over the excess and morals of Martin Scorsese's 2013 darkly comic, loosely biographical film about Jordan Belfort. Directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Terence Winter, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, and Kyle Chandler.
“The question of who's good and who's bad is always front of mind for me because my basic goal is to get to the place where no one is good or bad; everybody is in an unspeakably complicated situation. From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. You're not telling a single story; you're telling a world. You're inviting people into a world and asking them to live there with you and these characters for a period of time. The best I can do is build a world where people grapple with these important questions and try their best. All I can expect from people and from myself is that we're trying to do something larger than ourselves.”Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer ofNetflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. What are the unseen challenges faced by diplomats, and what role do they play in maintaining global order? How do TV shows influence our understanding of real-world politics? From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. READ MORE: ‘The Old Man': Jeff Bridges & Amy Brenneman Discuss Their Spy Drama, ‘Tron: Ares', ‘Heat' & More [Bingeworthy Podcast] Joining Bingeworthy to discuss season two of the hit series is writer and showrunner, Terence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”). Winter took over the show early in season one's development for creator Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone,” “Wind River”), who was overrun by all things "Yellowstone" and its related projects. After season one rumors began spreading that Sheridan and Winter butted heads over the direction of the series, Winter quit the show, but was ultimately convinced to return for season two. During the interview, Winter cleared the air and explained the situation in his own words. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Screenwriters Terence Winter & Frank E Flowers join Mase & Sue to talk about BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE, which chronicles the rise of one of the most influential music artists of all time. We talk about how the message of his music impacted the world and continues to resonate today, the process of penning a biopic, the dynamic of writing partners, the intimate collaboration with Marley's family, Bob and Rita's complicated relationship, the authenticity of Kingsley Ben-Adir's performance and the lack of subtitles. Plus, lessons in customer service, Steve's grownup wardrobe and the films that made us movie fans.
“I think what's unique about this biopic and about Bob [Marley's] story is that it really wasn't about his ego, it wasn't about him trying to be the biggest star in the world. It was about him connecting with God. I mean, he would smoke weed to kind of lower his ego and raise his consciousness so that he could read scripture, right? He would take these basic concepts: love thy neighbor, all people are equal, and try and channel that and inhabit that,” says Frank E. Flowers, co-writer of Bob Marley: One Love. On today's episode, I speak to Frank E. Flowers and Terence Winter about taking on reggae icon Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) for their new biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, also written by Zach Baylin and Reinaldo Marcus Green. After an assassination attempt on Marley and his wife Rita (Lashana Lynch) in 1976, Marley went to London in self-exile. It's there Bob Marley and the Wailers recorded Exodus, which some consider to be the best album of the 20th century. With scattered flashbacks, the film mostly takes place from 1976 to 1978. “With the screenplay, we talked a great deal about how to tell the story. It's obviously a big life and a huge canvas and certainly, you could do the cradle-to-grave version where this happened, that happened, etc. But I'm always a fan of opening a movie as hot as possible, like start with an incident that just grabs you and is undeniably compelling and we both obviously arrived at the biggest incident in the movie in that sense is the shooting which is just horrific and feels like it kind of comes out of nowhere. It also lent itself to the classic structure of the Hero's Journey where our hero is shot, has this incident that happens in his home and then has to leave home and learn about himself before he comes back home again,” says Terence Winter. I also talk to Winter about writing The Wolf of Wall Street, The Sopranos and one of my favorite shows, Xena: Warrior Princess. He also talks about the downside of writing for a dolphin when he worked on the show Flipper. “There were only 10 stories in the world that organically involve a dolphin. When you get to the eleventh one and then you look at each other like what do we do now?” says Winter. To hear more, listen to the podcast.

Before moving with my family from Southern California back to the East Coast to be closer with family, I sat down with Emmy Award Winner (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire), Academy Award Nominee (The Wolf of Wall Street), Terence Winter. Then we moved, and I paused the podcast. And this episode stayed locked on my hard drive for almost three years. Time has done nothing but age Terry's stories like a fine wine. You will laugh your ass off, be inspired, and realize that even those on top had their struggles at one point. In Terry's case, his struggles were so large and his path to Hollywood so unique (and hysterical) that you will be referencing this conversation for years to come (or at least I will). Sit back, throw some ear muffs on your kids (we left it raw so F bombs abound) and enjoy the brilliant screenwriter that is… Terence Winter.10,000 NOs podcast is now in it's 2.0 phase: after a long pause from late 2021 to late 2023, it has returned in a more raw format: shorter episodes, like the Monday Morsels of yesteryear (they may be short, solo riffs by Matt on central themes of the pod, excerpts from Matt's 10,000 NOs Insiders Community Zooms, or excerpts from Insiders VIP sessions with VIPs from the entertainment interview and beyond). "I think that we like to look at somebody who's in a leadership position and say, look at what they did. The juxtaposition between those two things, I find to be delightful."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. "I feel like film and television are often representing corrupt power and evil in leaders. That exists. But I've been writing about people in that world for a long time and have had the privilege of talking to a lot of them. And for the most part, they're smart people with integrity and good values, and they're good at what they do, and they just want to help people in their own country and around the world. And even with good people at the helm, it can all go to hell and that, to me, is what's most interesting. I always had a hard time reading the newspaper. I found it very overwhelming in the suffering that you're seeing described every single day. And for me, coming at it through the lens of what's a story that I can relate to that I can follow a character through that they're surviving. For me was a kind of a way to come at it and not have to turn away from the darkness."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. "I think that we like to look at somebody who's in a leadership position and say, look at what they did. And we don't recognize the fact that there's a huge team of people creating this thing that we attribute to an individual. And certainly, that's the case in political environments. I didn't work in Washington for a long time, but I worked there a little bit, and I very much got a sense of the incredible talent of a group of people who are standing behind somebody who's an elected leader, helping them make decisions and in research and the forming of strategies. We're attributing to one mind what is the work of 20. I think that's what so many of the characters in that place are bringing to Kate Wyler (played by Keri Russell). And it takes her a while to kind of figure out does she trust them? Does she think that they're really value-added? Is she going to have to do this by herself? Sometimes it takes time to embrace that and be able to utilize the skills that are around you, but nobody does it by themselves. I think that's a myth."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. "I try to look at people in those positions with as much of an open mind as possible. I think they all want the best for the country, but I think the people who are good at walking into a diner and shaking people's hands in a thousand different towns across the country with a lot of very different diners, I think the people who can walk in and handle that and meet absolutely everybody and create an instant connection with them are not necessarily the people who are interested in the kind of granularity of federal regulations and a wide, wide series of topics. I think the people who are good at those things have cultivated over the course of their life, different parts of themselves and grown different strengths. But then there comes this moment where we want one person to be able to do all of it, and we're somehow surprised when they're not good at every piece."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. On today's 13th anniversary episode, I talk to Academy Award nominated and Emmy Award winning TV and film writer Terence Winter. Originally from Brooklyn, Terry became a lawyer before giving it all up to move to LA to pursue a career in screenwriting. Starting on shows like Xena: Warrior Princess and sitcoms like Sister, Sister, Terry eventually became a writer for The Sopranos, which he wrote on for most of its run. Since then, he created the wonderful HBO show Boardwalk Empire, wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street, and co-created both Vinyl and the new Taylor Sheridan/Sylvester Stallone show Tulsa King, which just wrapped up its first season on Paramount+. Rich Cohen is an American non-fiction writer. He is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. He is co-creator, with Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter, of the HBO series Vinyl. His works have been New York Times bestsellers, New York Times Notable Books, and have been collected in the Best American Essays series. In 2022, Cohen became a columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Given his expertise on so many subjects, we asked him to impart some of his knowledge about a particular historical phenomenon: 21st Century Jewish-American Mobsters. His fascination with Jews in the mafia and his father's upbringing inspired him to write 'Tough Jews'. When people think of Jews, they don't usually associate it with toughness (except for maybe Israelis). There's a misconception that the Jewish-American mobsters of the last century were the accountants or the "brains" behind La Cosa Nostra (the Italian mafia), but in reality, they were often the muscle. Learn about Murder Inc. and notorious Jewish criminal masterminds such as Rothstein, Lepke, Lansky, Segel, Schultz, and more. Cohen explains why Jews and Italians worked so well together, leading to the creation of 'The Commission', which turned territorial rival gangs into an organized crime syndicate that spanned across the US and beyond. We wondered why the children of Jewish gangsters didn't join "The Life," yet the sons of Italian gangsters followed their fathers' footsteps — and Mr. Cohen offered insights that'll surely pique your curiosity. The allure of "The Life" is understandably very strong. In a strange way, it's similar to being part a religious community (as crazy as that sounds), in the sense that it requires its members to live by an unbreakable Code, to follow rules that supersede the law of the land, to have a deep sense of loyalty and care for family and community. The story of the Jews is that of triumph over tragedy, which is the definition of "tough." Enjoy these lesser-known stories of Jewish history.

Rich and the guys recap the wild week at the MLB Winter Meetings and how losing big free agents can test one's devotion to teams unwilling to spend big. Acclaimed writer/producer Terence Winter joins Rich in-studio to discuss his new Sylvester Stallone series ‘Tulsa King,' what it was like being in ‘The Sopranos' writers room, recaps some of the HBO mob show's best episodes including ‘Pine Barens,' ‘Long Term Parking,' and ‘Members Only,' says why he was shocked at the audience response to the show's controversial series finale, and how he was able to team up with Martin Scorsese on the premiere episode of ‘Boardwalk Empire.' Terence Winter didn't just write The Wolf of Wall Street – he almost was The Wolf of Wall Street. The 62-year-old creator of Boardwalk Empire – also renowned for penning some of some of the most beloved ever episodes of The Sopranos – was a stone's throw away from the film's subject, Jordan Belfort, on the day of the infamous “Black Monday” stock market crash of 1987. They moved in some of the same circles, and Terence – by his own admission – had a certain “conman, bullshit artist” streak to his behaviour as a young man. He sometimes wonders what might have happened had they met in real-life; the degree to which he might have been seduced into a life of selling penny stocks in the hedonistic world of high finance.Instead, Terence moved to Hollywood in 1991, intent on writing screenplays. What happened next would help define the future of television. The Brooklyn-raised writer, after a brief stint writing for sitcoms, became a man synonymous with American criminality and the humans beings behind the most monstrous behaviour imaginable. He wrote 22 episodes of The Sopranos, including the famous Pine Barrens episode. After that, he stepped out on his own with the Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, which ran for five brilliant seasons. This month, Terence added a new show to his list of accomplishments: Tulsa King, co-created with Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan. Starring Sly Stallone as a mobster rebuilding his life and criminal empire following a lengthy stay in prison, it hits some familiar beats for fans of Terence's work, while also gravitating into exciting new territory. In the conversation you're about to hear, Terence breaks down his script for The Wolf of Wall Street and gives a spoiler-free guide to how he crafted Tulsa King – delving deep into his unique storytelling philosophies and writing habits. In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast hosts Mike DeAngelo, and Rodrigo Perez set their sights on the new mob dramedy from Paramount+, “Tulsa King.” The Sylvester Stallone-led show centers on Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York Mafia capo who just completed a 25-year prison sentence and is exiled by his bosses to start his own territory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The series also stars Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Jay Will, Garrett Hedlund, and Domenick Lombardozzi. Joining our co-host, Rodrigo Perez, to discuss the show is writer/showrunner Terence Winter, who made his name on other famous mobster shows like “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” also writing Martin Scorsese's "Vinyl" series and "The Wolf of Wall Street." The series is created by Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”), who also wrote the pilot episode, but handed over the reins to Winter, who attested that he made the show his own with little outside input - even from Sheridan himself. Winter was super generous with his time and told us everything about the show, but two things stand out. One debunking a report earlier this summer that the show would tie in to "Yellowstone" and telling us just how much freedom he had from Sheridan who let him do what he wanted with the show after he had written the pilot. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/support
