What are the unseen challenges faced by diplomats, and what role do they play in maintaining global order? How do TV shows influence our understanding of real-world politics? How do women navigate power, and what does it take for them to lead in politics?Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer ofNetflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. She's worked with television's leading showrunners, including Shonda Rhymes, Terence Winter, Steven Levinson, and Howard Gordon. Her career began working on Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing which has led to projects such as the hit Showtime series Homeland, ABC's long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and HBO's Vinyl, which was co-created by Martin Scorsese. She's the winner of two Writers Guild of America Awards for The West Wing and FX's limited series Fosse/Verdon and the 2023 Quincy Award for Responsible Statecraft.“The question of who's good and who's bad is always front of mind for me because my basic goal is to get to the place where no one is good or bad; everybody is in an unspeakably complicated situation. From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. You're not telling a single story; you're telling a world. You're inviting people into a world and asking them to live there with you and these characters for a period of time. The best I can do is build a world where people grapple with these important questions and try their best. All I can expect from people and from myself is that we're trying to do something larger than ourselves.”www.creativeprocess.infoIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastimage credit: Netflix

Evan Handler is beloved by millions for portraying Harry Goldenblatt, divorce-lawyer-turned-husband to Kristin Davis's Charlotte York, on HBO's groundbreaking series, and films, “Sex and the City,” it's current MAX follow-up, “And Just Like That,” as well as Charlie Runkle on Showtime's seven season “Californication.” In addition to authoring two highly acclaimed books, Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, and It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, Evan has played leading roles in ABC's “It's Like, You Know…,” and NBC's “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” STARZ' “Power,” and made numerous memorable guest appearances on “Lost,” “The West Wing,” “Six Feet Under,” “Necessary Roughness,” and “Friends.” In 2000, Evan played Larry Fine in ABC's TV movie “The Three Stooges,” followed by additional “real life” portrayals of Lloyd Blankfein in HBO's “Too Big to Fail,” Alan Dershowitz in FX's “People vs. OJ Simpson,” and Hal Prince in FX's “Fosse/Verdon,” each of which garnered numerous wide-ranging awards. On the big screen, Evan played a leading role in Ron Howard's “Ransom,” starring Mel Gibson, and featured and leading roles Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers,” “Taps,” “The Chosen,” and “Sweet Lorraine.” He's currently visible in David Duchovny's directorial effort, “Reverse the Curse.” Prior to his work in film and television, Evan earned acclaim in seven Broadway productions, all performed between his twenty-first and thirtieth birthdays, and all in spite of losing nearly five years of that span to his fight against a supposedly “incurable” leukemia. During this time Evan starred in Broadway productions of “Six Degrees of Separation,” “I Hate Hamlet,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Broadway Bound” and “Master Harold...and the boys.” Evan also worked extensively in off-Broadway and regional theater at NY's Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Rep, and Steppenwolf, performing early plays by Donald Margulies, Robert Schenkkan, Jez Butterworth, and numerous others. Evan's first book, Time On Fire, details his unlikely recovery from the leukemia diagnosed in the mid-1980s. His second book, It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, describes the twenty-year period post-illness, and Handler's surprisingly circuitous journey toward gratitude, using tales of serial dating, absurd relationships, unexpected depressions, and, ultimately, lasting love and a miracle conception. Adriana Pierce is a dancer, choreographer, and director based in New York City, and she joined the studio to talk about her work elevating queer artists in ballet, creating community, and her career in classical ballet as well as musical theater!  Adriana is the founder of Queer the Ballet, an initiative with the mission to widen the scope of classical ballet by producing queer work by queer dance artists. Queer the Ballet says on its website that it seeks to “queer” our ballet spaces and explore choreography often absent from ballet stages. After training at School of American Ballet, Adriana began her dancing career with New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet before realizing another dream of hers - working in Broadway, film and tv! She appeared in the 2018 Broadway revival of Carousel, in Steven Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story film, and in the 2019 limited series on FX, Fosse/Verdon.  She's currently the associate director and associate choreographer for Justin Peck's “Illinoise" on Broadway. Adriana's other choreographic work features movement and partnering that allows dancers of all genders equal agency, dismantling the traditional gender dynamics of dance. Her choreography has been performed by American Ballet Theatre, Carolina Ballet, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Ashley Bouder Project, and more. She's also completed residencies with Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU and Bridge Street Theatre, and she was recognized by Dance Magazine as one of 25 to watch in 2022. A two-time Tony Award-winning actor and singer, Norbert Leo Butz opens up about his childhood, the challenges he faced pursuing a career in acting, and the remarkable twists of fate that brought him to Broadway. Hailing from a large family of 11 siblings, he shares how the importance of education was instilled to them by his parents. Despite his family's support for school plays, his strict upbringing and limited resources led Norbert to sneakily pursue his love for acting. Norbert eventually had to confess to his father about attending a different college and studying to become an actor, a moment that ultimately led to his parents becoming his biggest supporters. He recounts his serendipitous entry into Broadway with "Rent," joining the cast as a cover for the roles of Roger and Mark–a right place, right time moment for him. He also talks about how he dealt with the pandemic through music, which eventually resulted in releasing his 4th solo album “King of Hearts” co-written with her daughter, Clara Davis. Growing up, Norbert developed a sense of self-reliance and resilience that shaped his approach to hard work and dedication. He encourages aspiring actors to avoid seeking validation through advice and instead cultivate self-awareness and a love for their craft. Norbert Leo Butz is a four-time Tony Award nominee having won two of those four nominations for his performances in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, and “Catch Me If You Can”. He made his Broadway debut in “Rent” in 1996 before moving on to a slew of additional Broadway credits, including “Wicked”, “The Last Five Years”, and “Big Fish”, among many others. He's also an accomplished TV and film actor with credits such as “Justified: City Primeval”, “The Good Wife”, “Blue Bloods”, Fosse/Verdon”, Dan in Real Life”, “Better Nate Than Ever” and the most recent, “The Exorcist: The Believer”. His fourth and latest solo album, King of Hearts was co-written with his eldest daughter, Clara Butz. Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. She's the winner of two Writers Guild of America Award for The West Wing and FX's limited series Fosse/Verdon."I think that we like to look at somebody who's in a leadership position and say, look at what they did. And we don't recognize the fact that there's a huge team of people creating this thing that we attribute to an individual. And certainly, that's the case in political environments. I didn't work in Washington for a long time, but I worked there a little bit, and I very much got a sense of the incredible talent of a group of people who are standing behind somebody who's an elected leader, helping them make decisions and in research and the forming of strategies. We're attributing to one mind what is the work of 20. I think that's what so many of the characters in that place are bringing to Kate Wyler (played by Keri Russell). And it takes her a while to kind of figure out does she trust them? Does she think that they're really value-added? Is she going to have to do this by herself? Sometimes it takes time to embrace that and be able to utilize the skills that are around you, but nobody does it by themselves. I think that's a myth."www.imdb.com/name/nm1263223www.netflix.com/tudum/the-diplomatwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Netflix/Alex Bailey

"First of all, how desperate are all of us for lightness and optimism and hope, and a sense of possibility in the people who are navigating and steering world affairs? That was really important to me to bring that in. And I think that I see all really dramatic moments as kind of streaked-through with a bit of the absurd. Those are always the moments that stand out to me. If you're not just at a funeral, but you're at a funeral where somebody dropped their purse, and there's a now a thousand things on the floor and a lot of people trying to pretend that there aren't. Those moments, for me, are the moments where our humanity really kind of shows through the cracks. And I was interested in this world that's so much about a facade and so manicured and presentational and looking at those like tragically human moments that pop up right in the middle of all of that. The juxtaposition between those two things, I find to be delightful."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. "I feel like film and television are often representing corrupt power and evil in leaders. That exists. But I've been writing about people in that world for a long time and have had the privilege of talking to a lot of them. And for the most part, they're smart people with integrity and good values, and they're good at what they do, and they just want to help people in their own country and around the world. And even with good people at the helm, it can all go to hell and that, to me, is what's most interesting. I always had a hard time reading the newspaper. I found it very overwhelming in the suffering that you're seeing described every single day. And for me, coming at it through the lens of what's a story that I can relate to that I can follow a character through that they're surviving. For me was a kind of a way to come at it and not have to turn away from the darkness."Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. This is the second episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Tony-award-winning playwright and screenwriter Steven Levenson is back to let us in on his current project with Hulu, “Up Here”. He recalls how it all started and why it was a terrifying moment for him at the time to turn it into a TV show, why they decided to find an additional executive producer for the show and their deliberate choice to set the show in 1999. Coming from theatre and having written for both movie musicals and TV musicals, Steven discusses the misconceptions and challenging aspects of TV and musicals, and why it is rarely undertaken. He also shares some of his learnings such as finding locations and having a solid plan during production to keep the ground running—a challenging but fun puzzle he likes to solve. While he can't share the projects he's currently working on, Steven is excited to get back to stage writing and continue to create something joyful and also have fun while doing so. Steven Levenson is a playwright and screenwriter who won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for “Dear Evan Hansen”. He has written for “Masters of Sex”, “Fosse/Verdon”, “Dear Evan Hansen”, the movie and the musical, ”Tick, Tick... Boom!”. He has recently adapted Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez' stage musical “Up Here” for the screen which is currently streaming on Hulu. It all comes down to a variety show heavy on the dance tracks to decide who's going to the finale, but as expected, there are twists. Luckily, it doesn't involve a spray-painted plunger. A game-changing three stars for this week's challenge sends Shea Coulee straight to the finale four with shoe-in Jinkx Monsoon. But the show stealer of the night is Monet's ultimate diva moment. That pesky alliance helps decide the final four, but the game isn't over, and this second showdown might be even more exciting.
