Successful serial entrepreneurs are unique in their ability to see transformational shifts before they happen and then they ultimately build a company to meet this future demand. In Jon's case, it started during his time at MIT when he saw an opportunity in the CAD industry to automate an engineer's sketchbook. It led him to start his first company called Premise which was later acquired. The next shift was recognizing the difficulty of using CAD software for product designers and thinking there has to be a better way. This led to the launch of SolidWorks and they built their software to run on Microsoft Windows, which was groundbreaking at the time. The company scaled rapidly and it led to another successful acquisition. As technology evolved to more of a SaaS business model and cloud based architecture, this opened the door for his latest company called Onshape. It changed the game for product designers in many ways, but especially for team based product development collaboration. The company also scaled aggressively and another amazing acquisition, this time by PTC in 2019. Oh, and not only is Jon a great entrepreneur, but he was also part of the famous MIT Blackjack Team, which we discuss in lots of detail about this experience and also his interest in magic. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * His experience using a computer for the first time at his high school which includes a very precious fun fact about a popular movie from the 80's. * Why he chose to study Mechanical Engineering at MIT and how he got involved in the CAD software industry. * A journey through Jon's entrepreneurial career including lots of stories around the companies he's built. * All the details about the launch of Onshape, its acquisition by PTC, including the growing popularity of the platform as well as their focus on making a meaningful impact on important initiatives like education where over 1M educators and students have free access to their software. * Advice for founders on building out their core foundational team. * And so much more. Don't think you can overthink your money decisions? Study's show that sadly, you're wrong. Not only will overthinking cause you to create overly complex plans, but you'll give up early on strategies, fail to move when you need decisive action, and exhaust yourself with going over the options "just one more time." Overthinking rarely involves positive thoughts, and you can't win when you're not confident. Today we'll help you solve that issue. Long time listeners will remember the last time we had Jon Acuff on the show back in 2017, (find that here: Give Yourself The Gift of “Finished”). In Jon's new book Soundtracks, he explores how our thought process and the stories we tell ourselves impacts our everyday lives, AND how you change your own soundtrack to solve your problems with overthinking. Give Enough Cash and Even The Spenders Pay Up... Eventually Remember the news the weeks after the first stimulus checks hit? Everyone waiting for the first piece of evidence to release their blog posts and podcast episodes about how everyone ran out and bought fancy 4k's and PS5s? (We totally didn't do that...not us!) Well, a new study shows that given ample cash to clear out the Amazon wish list, many people HAVE ended up paying off their bills. During our headlines Joe and OG discuss paying down debt, the double penalty of being stuck in a debt cycle, and how you can walk away from the I Can't mindset. How The Pandemic Changed Our Retirement Worries The pandemic challenged a lot of the conventional thinking behind emergency funds, healthcare, and and retirement living. A newly released Fidelity report queried investor retirement worries, and while there were some surprises, other figures proved that not all financial thinking needs to be redrawn from the ground up. Doc G from the Earn & Invest podcast joins us today to discuss what the report means for the broader retirement conversation AND what the numbers mean to you. The Haven Life Line: What's the deal with Fundrise? Sean is interested in investing with Fundrise, and wants to know our thoughts. While the company has seemed to change up their marketing since they first came on our radar we still have some reservations, and OG and I actually differ on a few thoughts here. A real Immortal of the rock n roll pantheon joins Christian for a career breakdown, as well as a focus on new material including a rare political song. Jon Anderson the voice of Yes is the guest on this episode of Deeper Digs! Jon Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock as the lead vocalist and creative force behind Yes. Anderson was the author and a major creative influence behind the ground-breaking album Fragile as well as the series of epic, complex pieces such as “Awaken”, “Gates of Delirium” and especially “Close to the Edge” which were central to the band’s success. Additionally, Anderson co-authored the group’s biggest hits, including “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “Roundabout”, and “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”. Never to stand still musically, he is getting ready to release an album he started 28 years ago through Blue Élan Records. The album’s title, 1,000 Hands is a reference to the fact that numerous guest musicians perform on the album, including Ian Anderson, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty, Steve Morse, Chick Corea, Zap Mama, Chris Squire, Alan White, Steve Howe and many more. This album, produced by his friend Michael Franklin, really speaks to the power of a musical life still in the throes of a fervent artistic endeavor, always wanting new experiences in music, always wanting to surprise the listener. The album comes out on July 31, 2020 and will be offered on deluxe double gatefold vinyl, CD, and through all digital platforms. In the mid 70’s he created a pure solo album, in every sense of the word: performing all the music, playing every instrument, writing a storyline, and of course singing all the vocals in the critically acclaimed Olias of Sunhillow… a milestone in recording and adventurous creativity. You only need to look at his output of solo albums over the years to see how inventive his life in music has been, from Animation to Song of Seven, Three Ships to Toltec, City of Angels to The More You Know, to name just a few. All of these albums marked his own progression and adventure through music…leading up to 2009 following his near death, the release of the life affirming album Survival and Other Stories. In Jon’s words: “Music is our spiritual connection to the soul, that’s why people all over the world connect to Music and to each other through Music.” 1000 Hands, a new album long in the making. The album originates from sessions for a project to have been called Uzlot (a northern English pronunciation of "us lot") that Anderson had been recording in Big Bear, California, with Brian Chatton in around 1990. Chatton wrote most of the music, played keyboards and also sang. Anderson asked his then Yes bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White to play on the project too. At the time, Yes were preparing for a tour and Anderson put the master tapes in his garage and, as he has recounted, gave them very little thought for many years. In 2016, producer Michael Franklin contacted Anderson about using the tapes and finishing the album. Further recordings followed at Solar Studios in Orlando, Florida. Along with some newly written material, the final result is 1000 Hands. As the album title suggests, the album was created with a number of guest performers, including Steve Howe, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Brian Chatton, Larry Coryell, Steve Morse, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice, Rick Derringer, the Tower of Power horn section, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and pianist Chick Corea. https://www.jonanderson.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Hands:_Chapter_One https://listen.tidal.com/album/137775169

On January 31, 2019 — a day many people were glad had arrived due to the crappy year 2019 turned out to be (if we only knew what was coming our way!) — Jon had his brand new smart phone stolen in a busy street market in Santiago, Chile. Not swiped from a table or picked from his pocket, but grabbed and wrestled from his hands. How did this happen, and why was it his fault? In Jon's words: complacency and stupidity. Listen to Episode 12 of From Sumplace New to learn how an easily avoidable situation manifested into the perfect swipe job for petty thieves. Seriously, it was a dumb-ass move by Jon. In this episode, Randy talks with Jon TenBrinke. Jon is a co-founder of Black Jack Contracting, he’s been in the game since high school. He spent his junior and senior years doing two things: playing football and taking the first steps to becoming an electrician. After graduating he began his apprenticeship, got his license at the age of 24 there for making him the youngest master electrician in Ontario’s history. After 7 years of running this electrical contracting business, the opportunity presented itself to get into the general contracting game and for the past 3 years, he’s been doing just that. What you can expect to hear in this episode:Jon co-founded BlackJack Contracting on a bet, that he made with his friend, interestingly enough that’s how the company got its name.Jon started his first business (the electrical business) at the young age of 25 because he got annoyed at how his previous boss was running the show. At the time Jon set the record or being the youngest master electrician in Ontario so he had lots of confidence in his ability to do the work but was in for a big surprise on how difficult it was to run a successful business. After the initial struggles that Jon faced in starting his electrical business, he transferred what he learned into the creation of Black Jack, as a result, he made far fewer mistakes but still found himself having tax issues and accounting problems because there was still so much he didn’t know.Despite not knowing all the ins and outs of the business side of things the company continued to grow solely because of the great quality of work that Jon and his team were doing. When Jon came to the realization that in order to take the business to the place he wanted to take it he would need to get a better understanding of how the business side of things worked so he dove deep into books, podcasts and any content he could get his hands on about business. After his first session with Randy, he walked away with the “One To Many” strategies that basically says “ find the one type client that leads to many other opportunities for future business”. In Jon’s case that was Realestate investors.Jon took this one strategy and ran with it, by his next session 6 weeks later he had sold $700,000 worth of new business.Jon immediately niched down the company to the point where they only work with real estate investors.Once Jon let go of the fear of missing out on the revenue he could get if he served non-investors as well he found that everything became a lot easier, his marketing spends dropped to almost nothing and his business was growing faster then ever, simply because the marketplace now recognized him as an expert. One of the biggest struggles we run into as entrepreneurs is not being able to let go and delegate tasks to others because “no one can do it as well as we can”. One we get over that way of thinking more often than not we find that others can do a much better job than us because they don’t have a million other things they need to be doing. Currently, that’s what Jon is working on within his business and he’s seeing a massive improvement in his happiness and the time he gets to spend with is family. If you like what you're listening to, we would love it if you could give us a 5-star review! This will help us know we are giving you what you need to grow and succeed as an entrepreneur! Are you currently in the startup phase where you’re launching a new business? Or are you already established, but looking to launch a new product or service? Then this episode is for you! Today’s guest dives into how you can make the startup phase a little easier on yourself so that you can scale up faster later on. Jon Warner is a five-time CEO and currently serves as the CEO for Silver Moon shots. He is widely respected as an entrepreneurship mentor and lectures on entrepreneurship at both the undergraduate and MBA level. Jon also has 40 published books under his belt with topics ranging from leadership, innovation, and more. Jon’s latest book, The SLAM Process, which stands for Startup Launch Assistance Map, uncovers how new founders can maximize their success during all the startup chaos. The book provides an easy set of sequential checklist-based approaches so that it can easily serve as a guide for any startup. So many startups get it backward, at first. They develop a product to solve a problem first, instead of going out and researching if the problem is indeed a ‘big deal.’ Jon worked with a company that initially built a water/showering solution for the homeless and for festivals, but it turned out that neither niche wanted those things, so they had to pivot! Today, this company is in the disaster relief field and is working with the U.S. Navy to incorporate their showering product overseas. In Jon’s book, he has simplified the Business Model Canvas, which is often found in lean startups. Jon has been using this model for a number of years and found it to lack sequence and to be a bit difficult for his entrepreneurs to follow. Jon’s version has a clearer sequence and really focuses on the ecosystem entrepreneurs plan on entering, which is not something the business model canvas addresses. In Jon's first ever podcast from NRF's retail "Big Show," Jon sits down with Joachim Klein of ThreeKit, where the two overcome NRF sounds to break down the key trends of the show, before the podcast is finally vanquished by a vacuum cleaner. The guys discuss the next-gen tech at the show, including robotics, facial recognition, and virtual fashion assistants, before digging into the problem of personalization and the opportunities retailers have if they can conquer their data problems. Klein then shares ThreeKit's go-to-market plan, and why these seasoned retail executives have banded together and put skin in the game. Their goal: bring augmented reality, visual commerce, and 3D product configuration into the same platform. End note: apologies for the background noise, the quietest place we could find at NRF was not terribly quiet, even with lavalier mics. SOUND UPDATE: my colleague Den Howlett has edited out as much background noise as possible in this new mix.

In Jon's annual Sapphire Now event review, he has a new guest, Brian Dennett of Enable AI, who was also part of the SAP blogger program coverage. Jon and Brian hash out the messages of the show, including the "intelligent enterprise" messaging and whether the Leonardo aspects actually made sense this year. They discuss Brian's pick for the sleeper announcement of the show, Master Data Management as a service, and why it matters. The guys share their findings from their often-spirited blogger sessions; Brian explains why has a philosophical difference with SAP on their "AI" approach. The guys wrap by giving their letter grades for the show, and Jon airs a couple of SAP gripes. Note: this recording was made on Jon's backup recording rig due to a microphone failure.

Hey, it's Thursday! Our almost-Friday gift to you is here. It's Jon Steiert. And boy are we excited to have this guy on the show! Do you know who Jon Steiert is, and why we were so stoked to have him on? He was True Voice Media's first employee! And since then, he's spread his wings to leave the True Voice nest, and become kind of a big deal at Pet360. Full disclosure: Pet360 is one our clients, and a lot of that is thanks to Jon helping us find our way to each other. At Pet360, Jon is the senior manager of E-commerce content. Fancy, right? He's a lover of his wife, comedy, hockey, and, of course, animals. If we could turn time capsules into audio entertainment this would be it. This episode is a special one because Jeff and Jon get to go back in time to the birth of our agency and talk about everything that's happened since. If you love learning about humble beginnings this is a great episode to listen to because you won't only hear about how True Voice Media got started, but also how Jon got his start in social. In Jon's own word's, "I have a career thanks to Jeff Gibbard." So go on, put those earbuds in, and enjoy this Delorean ride into some very shareable history.
This week’s guest is Jon Hinds, owner of Monkeybar gym chain, with its HQ in Madison, Wisconsin. Jon is the son of Bobby Hinds, founder of Lifeline USA, a prolific trainer and exercise inventor in his own right. You can say that working out is in Jon’s blood. Jon is a former NBA strength and conditioning coach and training consultant for the NFL and MBA. One of the things Jon is known best for is vertical jump training. He is a master of the use of the power jumper, as we’ll get into this episode. In Jon’s own training, he reached a very high vertical jump, and routinely trains athletes towards 8” gains on their own vertical leap through a unique system. What’s most impressive is that he does so without pushing barbell training, but rather emphasizes training based on movement abilities, band resistance, and descending power sets. By listening to Jon talk, there are a lot of implications to be made in regards to the way we as humans learn and adapt skills. Jon’s thoughts on the priority of movement skill (sprinting and jumping being a skill) over barbell lifting numbers is definitely something I am in agreement with. The way things like the power jumper overload running jumps is really interesting to consider, since it is a more specific overload than what most traditional plyometric exercises have to offer. The more I learn about sport, the more I realize that the way we force the brain to react to our environment dictates our sprint and jump results much more than cueing movements and lifting weights. Jon has been doing jump training for 25 years, and it’s great to have a wealth of practical information on the podcast. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Jon’s background in the field, with NBA basketball, and how he got to where he is now Jon’s basic philosophy on movement and power in sport Types of resistances for vertical jump training Weight belts vs. power jumper cords in vertical jump training Jon’s thoughts on plyometric training and depth jumps Drills for athletic alignment The scope of Jon’s resistance training component of his work Quotes: “You didn’t need any requirements (to be an NBA strength coach back in the 1980’s)” “Perfect the technique, and then lightly resist it” “You don’t want to interfere with technique by loading it too much, and if you stay within those parameters, you improve speed” “My objective on the field is not “what’s my squat, what’s my clean”, my objective on the field is “what’s my vertical, what’s my speed”.” “The cable works superior to dead weight in (vertical jump training), I think it has to do with the pre-load effect” “For my jump training program, I do 2 days per week, and about 30-40 jump reps per workout” About Jon Hinds Jon is currently the Owner and Founder of the Monkey Bar Gym franchise.
