About Jeanne Lyet Glassman: An only child, I was born in San Francisco, CA in 1955. My father was an aircraft mechanic and pilot, and my mother was an artist. Our family relocated to Colombia, South America when I was two for my father's job, and we returned to the States shortly before I started kindergarten due to the political unrest and my mother's concerns about the family's safety.  After graduating with a B.A. in English from Eastern New Mexico University, I moved to Albuquerque with plans to pursue an M.A. in English at the University of New Mexico. I met my husband there while playing in a pit orchestra for the musical, Jesus Christ, Superstar!  My husband was principal bassoonist, and I was concert mistress. Many couples have their “song,” but we have our own rock opera!I never completed my M.A. because we moved to northern California for my husband to teach math at the University of the Pacific. When I fretted about abandoning graduate school, about not having a job or a plan, my husband told me, “You've always wanted to be a writer, so write.” I published my first freelance story a couple of months later, and my life changed forever. My husband and I became active in The Compassionate Friends and later co-facilitated S.H.A.R.E., a grief support group for parents who have lost children through miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death. We worked with grieving parents for four years–until shortly after we adopted our daughter, the oldest of our two bi-racial children. A year later, we adopted our son. I've written and published several pieces about grief, neonatal death, and adoption, including the essay, “Rising from the NICU,” published on Raising Mothers. My creative nonfiction piece, “Healing Arts,” is a tribute to my mother's struggle with that horrible disease. I returned to graduate school in 2008 and received my MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2010. After my husband retired, we settled in Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 2017 where I have continued to write and teach. My awards include an Independent Publishers Book Award for my first novel, BLOOD OF A STONE (Tuscany Press), grants and fellowships from the New Mexico Writers' Foundation, Ragdale, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, as well as nominations for a Pushcart Prize and Best Small Fictions. In addition to writing and editing, I also teach creative writing for arts organizations and community groups.www.jeannelyetgassman.comTwitter--https://twitter.com/JLyetGassmanFacebook--https://www.facebook.com/JeanneLyetGassmanThreads--https://www.threads.net/@jeanne.gassmanInstagram--https://www.instagram.com/jeanne.gassman/My blog, Jeanne's Writing Desk--http://jeannelyetgassman.blogspot.com/About Victoria:Hi I'm Victoria a writer & developmental editor. Douglas' twenty-five-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country's most notorious serial killers and criminals. What Douglas sets out to do / Purpose of the bookTo teach people about how criminals and serial killers work, how we can catch them and how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from becoming a victim. The intended audience of the book / Who will benefit mostPeople who loved Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris, the author of SotL, based his character Jack Crawford, head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, on John Douglas) People who love true crime and/or horror storiesPeople who want to understand how - and why - serial killers do what they doPeople who want to make sure they don't become a victimPeople who don't like sleeping (this book is not for the faint of heart!)Who probably WON'T like this book?People who don't want to think about real life horror that lives nearbyPeople who can't handle explicit descriptions of violent and sexual crimeHonestly, most people will have trouble reading this bookHow does this book specifically benefit Men? As Men it is our job to protect the people in our lives. As difficult as it is to accept, there are deranged, sick criminals out there who enjoy inflicting pain and killing other people. If we're going to take care of our loved ones we need to educate ourselves first and then educate them - as well as be prepared to protect them if the situation calls for it.Is this book Easy, Average or Difficult to read? / How long is it? (1 minute) 04:00-05:00Mindhunter is very well written but it's INCREDIBLY difficult to read. The subject matter is so dark and twisted that it's highly possible this will be the most disturbing book you'll ever read in your life.445 pages, (Audiobook is 15 hours and 24 minutes)What are the overall book reviews? Is the book well-known? Popular? Significant?9,971 ratings, 4.7 stars#6 in Law Enforcement#7 in Criminology#22 in Biographies & Memoirs of CriminalsAudible#5 in Crime & Criminal Biographies#16 in Murder & Mayhem True Accounts#91 in MemoirsBook-To-Movie Translation Since its publication in 1995, Mindhunter (and the other books in this series by John Douglas) have been THE reference books for any kind of serial killers in novels, movies or television shows. Some of the most famous fiction inspired by John Douglas includes the “Hannibal Lechter” books by Thomas Harris, the “Alex Cross” books by James Patterson, the “Dexter” books by Jeff Lindsay, the show “Criminal Minds” and many, many others. There is a new Netflix show based directly on this book and the creation of the FBI's Serial Crime Unit Bio of John Douglas Douglas was born in Brooklyn in 1944 and grew up in Hempstead, New York.He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 and served for four years.Douglas received his bachelor's degree from Eastern New Mexico University, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.Douglas joined the FBI in 1970 and his first assignment was in Detroit, Michigan. In the field, he served as a sniper on the local FBI SWAT team and later became a hostage negotiator. He transferred to the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) in 1977 where he taught hostage negotiation and applied criminal psychology at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia to new FBI special agents, field agents, and police officers from all over the United States. He created and managed the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program and was later promoted to unit chief of the Investigative Support UnitWhile traveling around the country providing instruction to police, Douglas began interviewing serial killers and other violent sex offenders at various prisons. He interviewed some of the most notable violent criminals in recent history as part of the study, including David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Edmund Kemper, James Earl Ray and Richard Speck. He used the information gleaned from these interviews to create the FBI's new Crime Classification Manual (CCM). Douglas's work together with the FBI's Investigative Support Unit has helped catch thousands of serial criminals and bring them to justice. The insights learned from their research are now taught around the world and have transformed our understanding of why violent criminals do what they do and how to find them and stop them. Breakdown of Themes in Mindhunter Nature vs NurtureA serial criminal may be predisposed to perform certain acts but it is invariably the horrible things that happen during childhood that shape their ultimate actionsLoss Of InnocenceEveryone that comes in contact with a disturbing crime is permanently scarred - families, friends, neighborhoods, local police and FBI agentsIn many cases, even the serial criminals themselves are seriously troubled by what they have doneCourage in the Face of EvilEven though horrible things are happening, some people choose to stand up and fight back. A great example of this is the family of Karla Brown. After Karla's murder, her sister Dawn worked extensively with police and FBI to talk to the murderer - and even agreed to allow herself to be used as “bait” - to bring him to justice. Sometimes the Dragon WinsThe struggle against evil is ongoing and not every criminal is caught. The only way to truly make a difference is to keep fighting, to keep pushing for communities to spend the time, money and resources to keep criminals on the run and to bring justice to the families of the dead victims.

First as Chris LeDoux's right hand man to now backing Chris' son Ned LeDoux on the road. From the first phone call from Kaycee, WY to first their handshake in Salt Lake City, The bond between Chris and Mark was predestined to be friends for life.    Recorded March 10, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America.   FROM WIKIPEDIA: Chris LeDoux (October 2, 1948 – March 9, 2005) was an American country music singer-songwriter, bronze sculptor, and hall of fame rodeo champion. During his career LeDoux recorded 36 albums (many self-released) which have sold more than six million units in the United States as of January 2007. He was awarded two gold and one platinum album certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), was nominated for a Grammy Award, and was honored with the Academy of Country Music Music Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award. LeDoux is also the only person to participate and also perform at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  LeDoux was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on October 2, 1948. He was of French descent on his father's side. His father was in the US Air Force and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base at the time of his birth. The family moved often when he was a child, due to his father's Air Force career. He learned to ride horses while visiting his grandparents on their Wyoming farm. At age 13, LeDoux participated in his first rodeo, and before long was winning junior rodeo competitions. LeDoux continued to compete in rodeo events and played football through his high school years. When his family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, he attended Cheyenne Central High School. After twice winning the Wyoming State Rodeo Championship bareback riding title during high school, LeDoux earned a rodeo scholarship to Casper College in Casper. During his junior year at Eastern New Mexico University, LeDoux won the Intercollegiate National bareback riding Championship. LeDoux married Peggy Rhoads on January 4, 1972. They had five children: Clay, Ned, Will, Beau, and Cindy. Rodeo success and music beginnings In 1970, LeDoux became a professional rodeo cowboy on the national circuit. To help pay his expenses while traveling the country, he began composing songs describing his lifestyle. Within two years, he had written enough songs to make up an album, and soon established a recording company, American Cowboy Songs, with his father. After recording his songs in a friend's basement, LeDoux "began selling his tapes at rodeo events out of the back of his pickup truck". In 1976, LeDoux won the world bareback riding championship at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Winning the championship gave LeDoux more credibility with music audiences, as he now had proof that the cowboy songs he wrote were authentic. LeDoux continued competing for the next four years. He retired in 1980. Music career With his rodeo career at an end, LeDoux and his family settled on a ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming. LeDoux continued to write and record his songs, and began playing concerts. His concerts were very popular, and often featured a mechanical bull (which he rode between songs) and fireworks. By 1982 he had sold more than 250,000 copies of his albums, with little or no marketing. By the end of the decade he had self-released 22 albums. Despite offers from various record labels, LeDoux refused to sign a recording contract, instead choosing to retain his independence and control over his work while enjoying his regional following. In 1989, however, he shot to national prominence when he was mentioned in Garth Brooks' Top 10 country hit "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)." Capitalizing on the sudden attention, LeDoux signed a contract with Capitol Records subsidiary Liberty Records and released his first national album, Western Underground, in 1991. His follow-up album, Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy, was certified gold and reached the Top 10. The title track, a duet with Brooks, became LeDoux's first and only Top 10 country single, reaching No. 7 in 1992. In concert, he ended the song by saying, "Thanks, Garth!" For the 35th annual Grammy Awards in 1992, the single track "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. For the next decade, LeDoux continued to record for Liberty. He released six additional records, including One Road Man, which made the country Top 40 in 1998. Toward the end of his career, LeDoux began recording material written by other artists, which he attributed to the challenge of composing new lyrics. With his 2000 release, Cowboy, he returned to his roots, re-recording many of his earliest songwriting creations. The RIAA certified two gold and one platinum recordings for LeDoux. On February 22, 1993, the single "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy" went gold. On June 2, 1997, the album The Best of Chris LeDoux went gold. And on October 5, 2005, the album 20 Greatest Hits went platinum. Illness and death In August 2000, LeDoux was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, which required him to receive a liver transplant. Garth Brooks volunteered to donate part of his liver, but it was incompatible. An alternative donor was located, and LeDoux received a transplant on October 7, 2000. After his recovery he released two additional albums. In November 2004, LeDoux was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma for which he underwent radiation treatment until his death. LeDoux died of cancer on March 9, 2005, at age 56. His funeral was held on March 11.   https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com  https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

There is much turbulence, turmoil, and danger that we face today as our nation's very fabric is being torn apart and disintegrating around us. Our Founders faced similar turmoil and danger in the first fight for liberty against King George's tyranny. What served as their North Star in the turbulent times they faced? What helped them find strength and courage to fight against oppression? We examine America's Christian foundation that has served us for over 400 years and consider how we can restore that healthy foundation for today. Amy chats with energetic and informative Michelle Gomez today. Recent awards Michelle has earned include the NLPOA's Latina of the Year Award (2019), and the Distinguished Alumni Award Nominee, and University of Phoenix Leadership Impact Awards (2019). Michelle has a modern success story with a lot to share with anyone with real ambition. Greatly influenced by her mother's drive and work ethic, Michelle got her first job at McDonald's at age 16. Her mother's example helped steer her from the golden arches to a career in the supply chain industry where she remains today. There she found herself involved with transportation companies and 3rd party logistics which were male-dominated industries at the time, and her coworkers were often older and rarely from her Latinx culture. She decided to get an M.B.A. from Eastern New Mexico University. This helped bolster her confidence, and her work performance showed it. Coworkers saw her navigate with great success in a work culture that seemed such an alien environment for a woman like Michelle and often other people would come to her to ask for help and advice. Over a period of years, she became a “go to” person for someone in need of job coaching. She always enjoyed this work and knew she was helping others to succeed. In 2018 then, she deemed herself a “corporate entrepreneur” and launched a business of her own as a career and life coach. Influenced not only by her mother but also by her grandmother who recognized Michelle's drive and potential, Michelle took that business leap while retaining her position in corporate sales. As if she weren't busy enough at that point, she published a book called Own Your Brilliance: Overcome Impostor Syndrome for Career Success. Michelle writes of the self-sabotaging, self-defeating mindset or thought pattern that plagues many people, especially women and people of color. That is, the belief that you are not good enough, but have been given your position because of something other than your ability and accomplishments. It is a gnawing self-doubt that causes you to question your worth. Michelle explains how this deep-seated problem can keep many talented individuals from moving forward in both their careers and in their lives. Through her book (now in its second edition), as well as her online course, her speaking engagements and her one-on-one coaching packages, Michelle helps people first recognize this problem and then guides them to discover the solution. Michelle Gomez shares many of her success tips with Amy and her listeners.   Topics in this episode: How to internalize your success Exploring your thought patterns in order to recognize and eliminate underlying beliefs causing self-defeat How to transfer your skills to something marketable How to discover and accept that we don't arrive fully formed but must learn, grow and evolve Why mindfulness and being intentional with our self-talk is essential Helpful ways to validate yourself to change negative self-beliefs What is a self-inventory and how to go about creating one How reframing your narrative can silence negative voices The importance of being authentic Why taking care of your physical well-being is an important factor for success in all facets of your life   Links: michellemgomez.com MGSUCCESSCOACH on Instagram https://www.amazon.com/Own-Your-Brilliance-Michelle-Gomez/dp/1948404532/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=michelle+gomez+impostor+syndrome&qid=1602592970&sr=8-1

Dr. Manuel Varela is a microbiology professor at Eastern New Mexico University located in the small ranch town of Portales, NM. He is the co-author of two books “The inventions and discoveries of the World Most famous scientists and “enter the world of microbiology: interviews of the world's most famous microbiologists. While in graduate school he coined the term “Antiporter Motif” and went on to study microbial physiology at Harvard. After Harvard, he returned to New Mexico where he started his own lab at ENMU. He teaches Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, and Virology. Wow… As I say this I realize that these are all courses that I registered for and passed in undergrad! It makes me a bit nervous still to think about those exams! And that was a huge accomplishment because Dr. V is a tough but wonderfully engaging professor. (take a deep breath) He also mentors graduate students and works collaboratively around the world on topics such as bacterial sugar transporters, drug resistance, and discovered multi-drug efflux pumps. In this episode we are going to talk about connection of bacteria and the environment. Dr. Varela’s research is showing that food-borne pathogens are becoming antibiotic resistant. These enter our environment through food animals - in waste streams and production. Polluting our water and land. The reduction of antibiotics as a growth mechanism in food animals is now being banned globally - yet there is a concern about resistance and a looming food shortage in the near future. Let’s have a look at the importance of bacteria - especially for creating a healthy environment that we promote survival of biodiversity. One more plug before we get started. I know that you may have a special professor or mentor in your life that really saw potential in you - even if you had no idea you had ounce of potential. Dr. V is that professor for me. We’ve known each other since 1997 when I took my first Microbiology course with him. Over the years he has provided references that supported me acceptance into graduate programs and fellowships - literally he has supported me as I follow my dreams. He has given me amazing advice to help others in education and on my own research pursuits and publication. I am so grateful to Dr. V! Why do the powers that be try to convince us that there is a “clash of cultures” or a conflict between Islam and the West or between Islam and Christianity?   To answer that, Dr. John Andrew Morrow discusses his book, The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World.  We learn that Christianity and Islam co-existed peacefully with full protections for Christians for 1400 years. These covenants  “uniformly state that Muslims are not to attack peaceful Christian communities, rob them, stop churches from being repaired, tear down churches to build mosques, prevent their Christian wives from going to church and taking spiritual direction from Christian priests and elders, etc. On the contrary, the Prophet commands Muslims to actively protect these communities ‘until the End of the World’.” In this informative conversation we learn about the rise of European Colonialism and its handmaiden, Islamic Fundamentalism (now funded and supported by the U.S., the Saudis, and Israel) and the role of these modern powers in smearing Islam and framing Muslims as “terrorists” for geopolitical interests.  Dr. Morrow invites us to wake up and learn our history. Find his writings on his website, John Andrew Morrow, and learn more about these historic covenants at Covenants of the Prophet. Dr. John Andrew Morrow was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1971. Raised in a multilingual family, he lived in Montreal for ten years and in the Greater Toronto Area for another twenty. The product of a Catholic education, he completed his elementary school in French, his high school in English, and his university studies in English, French, and Spanish. Word By Word host Gil Mansergh wishes every one a Happy Gothic Valentines Day by welcoming Sonoma State’s newest professor of creative writing, Stefan Kiesbye. Born in Germany, and with an MFA from the University of Michigan, Stefan’s books prompted Die Welt to write that he “is the inventor or the modern German Gothic novel.” Stefan’s debut, Next Door Lived a Girl, won the Low Fidelity Press Novella Award and his second book, Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone, was a Top Ten pick in Oprah Magazine and made Entertainment Weekly’s "Must Read" list. Stefan’s newest novel,The Staked Plains, is set in a desiccated town in Eastern New Mexico that is “ similar but decidedly different” than the Eastern New Mexico University community where Stefan taught before relocating to Sonoma County.

Jaz Shergill first contacted me in September 2014 looking to take his career overseas to Australia for the winter, with a goal of getting on with a club in the Australian Baseball League (ABL). At the time, the Eastern New Mexico University grad had already attempted to play Indy ball in the states but struggled to find clubs who will sign him, largely due to the fact that he was Canadian which comes along with visa complications. He went on to play a summer of semi-pro baseball in the InterCounty Baseball League (IBL) in his native land of Canada before he decided that he needed to look overseas to pursue his dream of playing pro ball. With a good sinking fastball hovering between 88-91, I knew that Shergill had the ability to play in the ABL, but to get directly into the ABL especially that close to the beginning of the season, would be a difficult task. Knowing this, I advised Shergill that we should try and get him on with a state league club (second division) by offering to fund his own flight and work, thus freeing him up contractually to play with an ABL club should the opportunity arise. He was on board with the plan so the next step was to find him a club. Almost immediately he received some interest from the Redcliffe Padres of the Queensland State League, who offered him accommodations with a host family and a job as a doorman making $22 AUS an hour. Shergill jumped on this opportunity and within two weeks of our first communication, he was on a flight headed for Australia. Shergill hit the ground running as he immediately reached out to the Brisbane Bandits of the the Australian Baseball League to inquire about the possibility of trying out as a walk on. His emails, however, went unanswered but from a distance the Bandits were watching as he pitched in his first outing for the Padres. It was when Shergill pitched in a scrimmage game with the state league all-stars against the Bandits when he finally caught his break as he impressed former big leaguer, Bandits GM and Aussie baseball legend Dave Nilsson who then made him an offer to play for the Bandits shortly after.
