Rob INTERVIEWs Singer, Songwriter, Master of the Mouth Harp, Bluesman and Rapper - Philly's one and only G LOVE of G LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE! Today Rob talks to G. Love (Garrett Dutton) about the 30th anniversary of G LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE'S monumental 1994 self-titled debut album! Find out how G Love (Garrett) got his name, his street performing days in Boston, his love for Basketball, what inspired his early love of music and making music and much more! Garrett's dad Gary joins Rob and G about 30 minutes in and Rob asks him how he handled his son going into the music business and other things only a father would have the answers to ... haha ********* A little bit about G Love: Shortly after moving to Boston, Dutton (soon to be G Love) met Tom DeMille, a local producer Dutton later nicknamed T-Time, a reference to DeMille's appreciation for both music and golf).  In 1993, DeMille flew to New York to meet with a Los Angeles–based producer who had connections to Michael Jackson (arranged through a family friend). DeMille shared some studio and live recordings of Dutton, who had just started going by the moniker G. Love. Later in 1993, G. Love and Special Sauce (as the trio was now called) signed a record deal and released their first album in 1994. Known for his live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson and Citizen Cope. As a producer, Johnson signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter, and has toured with Dave Matthews. In 2009, he collaborated with Zap Mama on their album ReCreation, singing on the single "Drifting". In 2010, G. Love joined forces with The Avett Brothers who produced and are featured on his album "Fixin' to Die". The album was released under the Brushfire label on February 22, 2011. G Love and Special Sauce's latest album PHILADELPHIA MISSISSIPPI was released on June 26, 2022. G Love and Special Sauce are currently on their 30th anniversary tour for their debut album selling out shows across the US ************ You can find G Love on Instagram @phillyglove, and on Facebook (G Love & Special Sauce). Once I could feel grounded in an East African context and value who I am in an American context - suddenly it was so apparent that music was where I was supposed to be. The dynamic, ascendant jazz singer Somi has been celebrated for her artistry as much as her activism. She became the first African woman ever nominated in any of the Grammy's Jazz categories last year, and she has performed at the United Nations' General Assembly by invitation from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Somi describes herself as a “East African Midwestern girl who loves family, poetry, and freedom” and yet hers is a story of survival, adversity, and transformation. In this episode, she discusses what happens when a teacher steals your joy, the power of a meditative practice that connects her to her ancestors, and how she is still finding her voice.   References: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon Miriam Makeba The Babiito and Bunyoro-Batooro people Curtis Institute of Music ‘Dreaming Zenzile:' Somi Kakoma and Miriam Makeba Zap Mama

K.ZIA - "JFMB" from the 2022 album Genesis on Groove Attack. Born in Berlin to a father from Martinique and a Belgo-Congolese mother (Marie Daulne, of the acclaimed Zap Mama), K.ZIA brings a worldliness to her debut full-length, Genesis. Not only does she adopt the alter ego of "Zia," a feistier version of her own self, but she sings for the first time in French, like on today's Song of the Day "JFMB" or "J'Fais Mes Bails." "So I'd translate J'fais mes bails into 'I do my thing,'" she toldEssentially Pop. "Zia is someone that lives unapologetically. She knows her values and will not bend herself to try to explain or justify her ways to ignorant or close minded people who criticize and downgrade when they don't understand the other. That's the vibe of the song “des fois je fais des choses qui ne sont pas trop acceptés, je connais mes valeurs je ne vais pas m'éxcuser” – Sometimes I do things that aren't quite accepted, I know my values I won't apologize for it. While growing up in France very often I was perceived as strange, coming from an artistic background and having grown in foreign countries. Younger, i would try so hard to blend in, and detach myself from all these eccentric traits. Today, I no longer do that, this is what 'JFMB' is about." Another one! Sick of their ignorance around the subject, your hosts embark on a roadtrip to France to meet one of the leading experts in Environmental Justice today, Brendan Coolsaet! The associate professor takes us through a history of the movement, from its emergence in marginalised communities of colour in the United States, to its 'hop' across the pond where the term is gaining popularity by the day. We discuss the semantic drift of "Environmental Justice", what it actually means for people today, and key concepts which researchers are fighting bloodthirsty battles over in modern day academia.    Brendan's book on the topic, "Environmental Justice: Key Issues" is a fantastic way to get into EJ with plenty of accessible, critical, perspectives. Our conversation also digs into Brendan's recent trip around Italy, where he witnessed first-hand the effects of climate change on the Italian agricultural system as he moved from farm to farm. Through theory and practice, there is so much to think and learn about in the realm of Environmental Justice, and we're glad people like Brendan are there to help illuminate the path, and make sure that as we progress towards a better world, we don't get lost on the way.    You can find Sakshi on Twitter - @Bcoolsaet Brendan's website is here Let us know your thoughts at risingwiththetide@gmail.com as well as what you'd like us to talk about next!

A real Immortal of the rock n roll pantheon joins Christian for a career breakdown, as well as a focus on new material including a rare political song. Jon Anderson the voice of Yes is the guest on this episode of Deeper Digs!Jon Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock as the lead vocalist and creative force behind Yes. Anderson was the author and a major creative influence behind the ground-breaking album Fragile as well as the series of epic, complex pieces such as “Awaken”, “Gates of Delirium” and especially “Close to the Edge” which were central to the band's success. Additionally, Anderson co-authored the group's biggest hits, including “I've Seen All Good People”, “Roundabout”, and “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”.Never to stand still musically, he is getting ready to release an album he started 28 years ago through Blue Élan Records. The album's title, 1,000 Hands is a reference to the fact that numerous guest musicians perform on the album, including Ian Anderson, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty, Steve Morse, Chick Corea, Zap Mama, Chris Squire, Alan White, Steve Howe and many more. This album, produced by his friend Michael Franklin, really speaks to the power of a musical life still in the throes of a fervent artistic endeavor, always wanting new experiences in music, always wanting to surprise the listener. The album comes out on July 31, 2020 and will be offered on deluxe double gatefold vinyl, CD, and through all digital platforms. In the mid 70's he created a pure solo album, in every sense of the word: performing all the music, playing every instrument, writing a storyline, and of course singing all the vocals in the critically acclaimed Olias of Sunhillow… a milestone in recording and adventurous creativity. You only need to look at his output of solo albums over the years to see how inventive his life in music has been, from Animation to Song of Seven, Three Ships to Toltec, City of Angels to The More You Know, to name just a few. All of these albums marked his own progression and adventure through music…leading up to 2009 following his near death, the release of the life affirming album Survival and Other Stories. In Jon's words: “Music is our spiritual connection to the soul, that's why people all over the world connect to Music and to each other through Music.”1000 Hands, a new album long in the making. The album originates from sessions for a project to have been called Uzlot (a northern English pronunciation of "us lot") that Anderson had been recording in Big Bear, California, with Brian Chatton in around 1990. Chatton wrote most of the music, played keyboards and also sang. Anderson asked his then Yes bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White to play on the project too. At the time, Yes were preparing for a tour and Anderson put the master tapes in his garage and, as he has recounted, gave them very little thought for many years. In 2016, producer Michael Franklin contacted Anderson about using the tapes and finishing the album. Further recordings followed at Solar Studios in Orlando, Florida. Along with some newly written material, the final result is 1000 Hands. As the album title suggests, the album was created with a number of guest performers, including Steve Howe, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Brian Chatton, Larry Coryell, Steve Morse, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice, Rick Derringer, the Tower of Power horn section, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and pianist Chick Corea.https://www.jonanderson.com/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Hands:_Chapter_Onehttps://listen.tidal.com/album/137775169

In 2001, Johnny Popcorn was at its early stages, and for the members it was a place to be creative. Considered as a project outside of the regular music careers, Johnny Popcorn would be the outlet when things got too stressful. Fittingly enough, recording Johnny Popcorn jams seemed to hit the spot. Fast forward to 2011 when Johnny Popcorn offered a unique musical formula—a concoction of highly fueled croons layered with its own views on topics ranging from teenage growing pains, self-gratification, weed, humdrum suburbia, and family values. Initially consisting of two members, Hezekiah and Tone Whitfield, the duo's inspiration and experience is the masterpiece that cements Johnny Popcorn. Vocalist and songwriter, Hezekiah, is no stranger to the music industry with 3 full-length solo albums as a hip-hop artist. Feeling like he was neglecting his Southern Funk/Rock upbringing passed down from his parents from Kentucky and North Carolina, he felt inspired for something new and exciting to develop—ultimately settling in on a new found passion. Bass guitarist and all-around producer, Tone Whitfield a.k.a. Grumpy Smurf, has produced numerous songs for Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Zap Mama, and others. Contrast to Hezekiah’s hip-hop background, Grumpy Smurf has always been a rock purist with an open mind. Today, JOHNNY POPCORN is a crow on a mission. An alter ego that was inspired by Hez and Tone, who would jokingly put down fake names on open mic lists. When the host called out JOHNNY POPCORN, the crowd would chuckle in amusement. “I think we have a name for a band,” says Tone Whitfield. If it’s riff-heavy, rolls off the tongue and is more filling, then it’s Johnny Popcorn.

WITH THE HOT NEW SINGLE ' I GOT A MAN " “The Blooming” is the title track that opens up Maimouna Youssef's first solo full-length CD since she came upon the mainstream scene in the early new millennium as a vocalist featured on The Roots' GRAMMY-nominated song “Don't Feel Right”, and a lively performance artis...t sharing the stage with a bevy of artists ranging from Angelique Kidjo and Nas to Martin Luther and Mos Def. The eclectic and out-of-the-box Youssef presents her title track as the CD's kick-off, bursting through the speakers with a revolutionary fire as she becomes Mumu Fresh, her MC alter-ego who unabashedly steals the mic from her softer chanteuse side to break rhymes inspired by an unapologetic childhood in Baltimore's concrete jungle coupled with an enchanting spiritual foundation borne from a close relationship with her spiritual guides and supportive elders. Youssef breaks conformity with a rap song that is neither conventional nor predictable, wearing lyrics that are both transcendental and contemporary in their message. Delivering said lyrics as fiercely and uncompromisingly as a young Lauryn Hill on the now classic Miseducation CD, Youssef become's Hill worthy successor. Zap Mama bequeaths the crown to Youssef at the song's end in a fleeting voice-over alerting you that this track is only the appetizer.Maimouna “Mumu Fresh” Youssef is a Grammy nominated seasoned singer, emcee, songwriter and poet. As a youth she joined the Baltimore/Washington based musical theater group called Uprising and toured with them as a lead vocalist. Some of her other theatrical experiences include the original trio showcase “Three Generationz” that consisted of Maimouna Youssef, her mother, Nataska Hummingbird, and her grandmother, Mountain Eagle Woman (now deceased). At 16 Mumu formed a jazz/hip-hop/funk/ band with her cousin Omari “AzIz” Forman-Bey known as Cirius B. Maimouna Youssef won the title of “Baltimore's Idol.” Cirius B's unique sound found it's way to producer James Poyser. The Roots recognized Maimouna's raw talent and asked her to sing lead vocals. Shortly thereafter, Maimouna was packing her bags to join the Roots world tour.
