In the sixth book of Henrietta and Inspector Howard series by Michelle Cox, newlyweds Henrietta and Clive return to Europe in an attempt to resurrect their failed honeymoon. While in London, they are approached by their old friend, Inspector John Hartle, who convinces them to search for the missing panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, a famous Renaissance painting, of which Hitler's top men are also in pursuit. Clive and Henrietta's search takes them to Chateau du Freudeneck in Strasbourg, France—the ancient seat of the Von Harmons and home to three eccentric distant relatives. What begins as a wild goose chase turns decidedly more deadly when several Nazi officers also arrive at the chateau in search of the valuable item. When Henrietta and Clive attempt to flee after Henrietta uncovers a shocking truth, they are forced to trust themselves to a suspicious French servant who seems all-too willing to help.  Michelle and I discuss her research for the art coveted by Hitler, how and why three of the female characters in her series give such a great picture of women's lives in the 1930s — and the story she's itching to write next.

Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Reyna, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Reyna Marder Gentin: Thank you so much for inviting me. Jenny Wheeler: You are a former criminal attorney with the Public Defender's office who has turned into a crime writer. What made you decide to get into fiction, and how did it come about? Reyna Marder Gentin: I always felt like there were stories lurking behind the cases I had. As an appellate attorney, you're stuck with a closed record. I knew what had happened right before the crime and at the time of the crime and maybe a little bit afterwards, but I never got to see the backstory. I never really understood who these people were because I didn't have a chance to meet with them. We didn't meet our clients. We would exchange letters, but very much pertaining to the case. Those questions you have that might explain why a person does what they do, what their family was like, what their education was like, what their love life was like, all of those things were off limits. When I did end up leaving the job – and I was there for almost 18 years – I felt like I had put in my dues, but I had had enough. I felt like I was hitting up against a wall on the storytelling. I couldn't bring myself honestly anymore to try to tell the story of these people when I knew so little. Understanding 'the story behind the story' That was the impetus when I left – trying to figure out what else could I do with my time that might be related but would allow me to explore things about the defendants, about the judges, about the prosecutors, about the defense attorneys, things I couldn't do in real life, but I would be able to do in fiction. That is the genesis of how it started to happen. The actual way it happened was that I quit my job. I had no idea what I was going to do next, and a friend told me she was taking a writing class and invited me to come along. I went with her, and it all sprang from there.

Fifth in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard Mystery Series, A Child Lost (She Writes Press, 2020) begins in 1935, with Henrietta's younger sister, Elsie, falling in love with Gunther, a German refugee. He has come to America to locate Liesel, the mother of a little girl he's been caring for, and has been working in maintenance at Elsie's school. Elsie begs Henrietta and Clive to help find Liesel, which leads to the old Dunning Asylum on Chicago's north side. The little girl, who has been having epileptic fits, is also spirited away to the horrible place. Henrietta and Clive brave filth and chaos to get her out, but Henrietta later realizes that everything wasn't as it seemed. Meanwhile, Clive is assigned to investigate a spiritualist living on the north shore, who might be robbing people of their valuables. It seems like a boring case until Henrietta starts falling for the spiritualist's visions. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Cox. Michelle is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series. She also writes Novel Notes of Local Lore, a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. Her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and more. It’s highly possible that Michell may have once lived in the 1930s and, since time travel has yet to be invented, she has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. She is a lover of board games, period dramas and big band music. Also, marmalade. In this episode Michelle and I discuss: How her experiences working in a nursing home influenced her novel. Her method for writing societal issues revolving around wealth, women’s roles, and mental health. Her decision to use She Writes Press and what sets them apart from traditional and self-publishing. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/348

What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta―much to Clive’s dismay―begins to believe the spiritualist's strange ramblings.Meanwhile, Elsie begs Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. Do you know what a '26 girl' was? Michelle Cox's Henrietta and Inspector Howard novels have been described as Downton Abbey meets the Miss Fischer mysteries. Set in Chicago and England between the two world wars, each book has a mystery to solve, but also explores the evolving relationship between feisty Henrietta Von Harmon and battle weary ex-soldier and heir to his family's fortune and title, Clive Howard. Michelle reads from the newest book in the series, A Child Lost, and shares where the idea for the series came from, what inspires her to write about a sometimes ignored era, and just what a '26 girl' was. This week's mystery author Michelle Cox is the award-winning author of The Henrietta and Inspector Howard series, which is a historical mystery/romantic suspense series, set in Chicago in the 1930s.  It has been described as “Downton Abbey meets Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” and has won over 40 awards to date.  Likewise, the series has been praised by Library Journal, Kirkus, Booklist, Popsugar, Publishers Weekly, Elle, Brit and Co. and many, many more.  Michelle lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three children, where she is hard at work on a new novel.  Before writing took over her life, she used to enjoy gardening, baking, big band music and the odd board game.   To learn more about Michelle Cox and her books visit MichelleCoxAuthor.com Press play (above) to listen to the show, or read the transcript below. Excerpt from A Child Lost Chapter 12 “Good afternoon, sir, madame,” Billings said crisply as he opened the front doorway of Highbury to Clive and Henrietta. “I trust you’ve had a pleasant afternoon.” He gave a slight bow as he stepped aside to allow them inside.  “Tolerable, Billings. Thank you,” Clive answered tersely, handing him his hat and coat. The short drive home from Crow Island had been fraught with a variety of emotions—first tears on Henrietta’s part and then excitement as she began to enthusiastically chatter about Madame Pavlovsky’s “extraordinary” clairvoyance. For his part, Clive had said little, allowing Henrietta to ramble on, all the while trying to decide how to proceed in this delicate situation.  He looked over at Henrietta now as she removed her hat and could see that her eyes were still slightly puffy and red. If Billings noticed, as he took her things, he had the discretion not to say anything.  “Any messages, Billings?” “Yes, sir. Two telephone messages, sir. I’ve laid them in your study. There is one for you, and one for Madame as well,” he said, nodding at Henrietta.  “Very good,” Clive answered briskly, rubbing his hands from the cold. “Is my mother at home?” “Yes, sir. She is upstairs in the long gallery with Mr. Bennett.”  “Upstairs with Bennett? Whatever for?”  “I really couldn’t say, sir. ‘Perusing the art before dinner,’ I think is what Mrs. Howard said.” Perusing the art? Since when did his mother care about art? His father had forever been trying to interest her in it, especially as they possessed so many priceless works, but he had failed to ever spark in her any real appreciation for it besides how it might elevate them in the eyes of their peers. “Is Bennett staying for dinner?” he asked Billings. “It would seem, sir,” Billings said emotionlessly.  Clive wondered why Bennett was showing up so regularly these days and dreaded having to later confer on more issues regarding the firm. He had a feeling Bennett was here to implore him to make an appearance downtown; it had been a while. Still, he could have requested his presence via telephone, could he not? Perhaps he had more documents for him to sign, Clive guessed with a sigh, trying not to be irritated.    “I see. Well,

Jenny: But now, here's Michelle. .  Hello there Michelle and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Jenny:  Was there a “Once Upon A Time' moment when you decided you must write fiction or you would have somehow let yourself down, or not completed something you were meant to do?  And if so, what was the catalyst for it? Michelle: Well no, not really. I didn't actually see myself writing fiction. I never had the courage to be a writer. I loved reading as a kid - I was always reading, and I think one of the greatest Christmas presents I ever got was a set of the Louisa May Alcott series. Introducing Michelle Cox I was always trying to do little copy cat or fan fiction stories based on her novels, but they never really went anywhere so I usually did illustrations on them instead. I was a pretty good essayist in high school, so I did still contemplate being a writer versus becoming a doctor. Michelle Cox - historical fiction author I actually chose to be a pre-med in college, because I thought it was the easier path than being a writer and it seemed less scarier to me. It turns out that was sort of true! At the time I thought, I would go into pre-med. Then I took this Victorian Lit class and I told myself, you can't keep hiding. This is really your passion. So I quickly switched, but still only majored in English Literature and not creative writing. Then I got married after college and had all these weird jobs, and started a family. Writing was on the way out until my oldest son, 16, was diagnosed with ADHD. I had been volunteering in all these committees and groups, and I just went cold turkey and quit everything. I just devoted all this time to this kid. It didn't take too long for him to get on a path, and then suddenly I had all this time. I could either get a job, go back to volunteering, or maybe I could write that novel that I really always wanted to write. Suddenly, I gave myself the permission and the courage after 20 years to really do this. But it wasn't really to be published; it was just to see if I could sit down and write a novel. It was a strange way that it all happened, but here we are! A serious-minded little girl Jenny: I noticed you said that you did Victorian Lit - were you always attracted to historical fiction? Michelle: Yes. You know, when I was a kid I was probably the weirdest kid because I had this thing in my head where I always wanted to read the Newbery award winners or the Caldecotts. I was always attracted to the classics and I always had this motivation that I should read only really good books. I remember one summer being 10 or 11, and my mum taking me to the library and I felt so conflicted. I said, "Mum, I don't know whether to pick out the junk or to read the classics". She said, "oh honey, just read junk!" But I couldn't do it. I had to read the Newbery's. I basically read only classic literature until my third kid was born,

Eighteen-year-old Henrietta von Harmon, despite her aristocratic name, struggles to keep food on the table for her overwhelmed mother and seven younger siblings. After too many evenings spent cleaning, peddling drinks, and keeping score for dicers at a local bar, Henrietta jumps at the chance to double her income by taking a new job at a nightclub, where she dances with customers for hours.
