Welcome to Episode 214! This episode contains a lot of biblio adventuring. Emily is in Traverse City, Michigan, helping her daughter, getting to know her new granddaughter, and discovering the many excellent Little Free Libraries in the area. She also shopped at Horizon Books and has been spending time at the Traverse City Library. Meanwhile, back in New England, Chris and “Colleen from Chicago” hit the road for a four-day Biblio Adventure Extravaganza that included Melville's Arrowhead, Wharton's The Mount, Emily Dickinson's family homes, The Homestead and The Evergreens, Amherst Books, and The Yiddish Book Center. The former bookstore coworkers capped it off with the annual Moby Dick marathon aboard the Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport Museum. Oh, and she forgot to mention that they also went to the Odyssey Bookstore at Mount Holyoke. Phew, what a blast! We managed to finish a few books, too: Emily loved THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey and appreciated its cold Alaska setting while reading in the heat of Michigan's summer. She listened to the audiobook version of Ann Napolitano's first novel, WITHIN ARM'S REACH, which features six narrators, and then two Audible Original short stories by Alice Hoffman, "The Bookstore Sisters" and "The Bookstore Wedding.” Chris read MOBY DICK by Herman Melville (that's twice this year) and a novelization about his relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, THE WHALE: A Love Story by Mark Beauregard. She also read her first book club selection from Book Browse, THE ROSE ARBOR, by Rhys Bowen. Happy Listening!

Jenny Wheeler: That's right. Lucy, you've got a flourishing career writing these Key West food critic mysteries. You've just published number 13 in those. How did you get started on fiction writing? Lucy Burdette: It's a strange story, but your listeners might not know that I'm a clinical psychologist. That was my career before writing and when I met my now husband of 31 years, he was a big golfer and I was not, but I wanted to do whatever it took to spend time with him. So I started taking golf lessons, and I was just horrible, terrible. I made every mistake. It was embarrassing. I started thinking about what could I write that would combine psychology and learning golf. I began to pitch some non-fiction stories about the psychology of golf. I had a few published, but it's very hard as a freelancer to get picked up by magazines. Why don't you try writing a mystery?

Many years ago I was taking guitar lessons with a great teacher named Ken Volpe, or Master Ken as I liked to call him. When shooting the breeze over a song one day, I said to him, “I don't like the solo. I would do something differently.” He said, “Oh really. Well, put those minor pentatonic scales to use and come up with something different.” I simply couldn't do it. Why am I sharing this embarrassing story? Well, my guest today, Rhys Bowen, tells a similar tale, but with a more favorable outcome. While working in Drama for the BBC, she decided that she didn't like the ending to a play they were running so decided to write her own. With the confidence that only a twenty-two year old amateur playwright could have, she walked down the hall and put it on the head of Drama's desk. A week later she got the call that the BBC was going to do it. Rhys has been a working writer ever since. She recently joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss her career and latest novel, Where the Sky Begins.  Meet Rhys Bowen Rhys is the New York Times bestselling author of two historical mystery series as well as the #1Kindle bestseller In Farleigh Field and the international bestseller The Tuscan Child. Key Topics The importance of letting your brain rest and percolate in between projects. Why World War Two provides fertile ground for storytelling. The importance of play to feed one's inner child. How writing was therapy for Rhys during the early days of the pandemic. Rhys' creative trick for preventing writer's block. In Rhys Bowen's latest historical novel, WHERE THE SKY BEGINS, London during WWII is seen through the eyes of Josie Banks, and East Ender, a plain-spoken East Ender in a bad marriage, with no job, and one talent: making a decent cuppa.  Evacuated to the English countryside, Josie ends up on the estate of the aristocratic: Miss Harcourt, a reluctant host to the survivors of the Blitz.  Awed as she is by the magnificent landscape, Josie convinces Miss Harcourt to let her open a humble tea shop on the estate, seeing it as a chance for evacuees and villagers to begin again and possibly thrive.  When Josie meets Mike Johnson, a handsome Canadian pilot stationed at a neighboring bomber base, a growing intimacy brings her an inner peace she's never felt before.  Then Stan returns from the war. Now a threat looms larger than anyone imagined. And a dangerous secret is about to upend Josie's life again. Her newfound courage will be tested if she is to emerge, like a survivor, triumphant. Rhys and I discuss how and when this story came to her, the research that took her into one of England's most devastating wars, and why she loves to pivot in and out of writing mysteries—all great stuff from this prolific writer. You'll find WHERE THE SKY BEGINS on Amazon, or you can get it from your local bookstore now.

But, technically, since it wasn't a cozy mystery, but just a historical mystery, it's out of the running for my list of winners. If it was in the running, I'd have a hard time deciding…but here's my opinion on who should win the The Simon & Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award: Chapter and Curse Ruby Red Herring The Sign of Death

Back in the days when brick-and-mortar bookstores were common in suburban America, I was browsing the shelves at my local Borders when a title caught my eye: Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen. I picked it up, opened it, and fell in love. It's 1932, and Lady Georgiana Rannoch, a twenty-something who is “thirty-fourth in line to the British throne,” has fled her ancient but drafty ducal castle in Scotland for the family mansion in London. Alas, the Rannoch family—although rich in property—hasn't a farthing to its illustrious name due to the unfortunate gambling habits of the first duke, Lady Georgie's father. And as a member of the royal family, Georgie can't just go out and get a job, because the only destiny approved by her lofty relatives is to marry the fish-faced Prince Siegfried, who doesn't even like women. Nonetheless, with a little help from her friend Belinda and a handsome but enigmatic gentleman named Darcy O'Mara, Georgie manages not only to survive but to solve a murder. Since the day I finished that book, I have wanted to interview Rhys Bowen, the creator of Lady Georgiana and a number of other memorable detectives both amateur and professional. That time has come with Georgie's fifteenth adventure (and second murder-filled Christmas), God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen (Berkley, 2021). After fourteen books, Georgie's life and financial circumstances have substantially improved. Georgie and Darcy have married, and they plan to entertain their friends for Christmas at their new estate. As fate would have it, except for Georgie's beloved grandfather, the only guests able to attend are her brother, the Duke of Rannoch, and his wife, known as Fig—the last person Georgie wants to spend time with. She's just about resigned herself to Christmas with Fig when a letter arrives from Darcy's eccentric Aunt Ermintrude, insisting that they all come at once to her home near Sandringham, close to the Royal Family. The Queen of England has requested Georgie's presence, although she does not divulge why. Unable to say no to Her Royal Highness, Georgie, Darcy, and the Rannochs head off to Aunt Ermintrude's house. At Sandringham, Georgie learns that Queen Mary believes someone intends harm toward her son, the Prince of Wales, now deeply involved with Wallis Simpson. She wants Georgie to find out what's going on. Georgie's merry little Christmas is set to become a royal nightmare if she can't get to the bottom of this mystery. Bowen's mysteries are complex and their solutions satisfying, but the real delight of these novels is the way they poke fun at the British class system, exemplified by Georgie's own mixed heritage as the daughter of a duke and of an actress whose father, a retired Cockney policeman, acts as a constant reminder that being a member of the royal family isn't all it's cracked up to be. They're also, to put it simply, hilarious. If this is your first encounter with them, I promise you have a treat in store. Rhys Bowen is the New York Times bestselling author of more than forty novels, including two historical mystery series featuring Molly Murphy and Lady Georgiana Rannoch and four stand-alone novels. Her work has won over twenty honors to date, including multiple Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards. Find out more about her at https://rhysbowen.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Jenny: But now, here's Rhys .  Hello there Rhys and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Rhys: Thank you very much, it's lovely chatting all the way to New Zealand. Jenny: Beginning at the beginning - was there a “Once Upon A Time" moment when you decided you wanted to write fiction?  And if there was a catalyst for this, what was it? Rhys Bowen - Popular mysteries Rhys: Well if there was, I can't remember it, because apparently my mother says that I started writing when I was four. Since then, I've made up stories for myself, I've told stories to my brother. In my teens I really wanted to be a movie star, so I wrote scripts for myself in which I was always the tragic heroine and everybody cried at the end. So I've always written all my life. It never occurred to me that would be my profession; it was just part of me, something I did. I made up stories. When I found I was actually writing books and people were paying me for them, it was a huge bonus. Jenny: Oh that's wonderful! I gather you did start out by doing a script at the BBC? Rhys: Yes. Right after college, I went into the BBC as a trainee, and I soon found myself in the Drama department. I was working in radio drama, which was huge in those days. Unfortunately it's dying out now, but we had several original plays per week as well as serials, and adaptations of other plays. I found myself working on a play and thinking- if I'd written that, I don't think I would have ended it that way. So I had an idea for a play, and wrote it, walked down the hall to the head of drama with it and said "I've just written this play". About three days later, he called me in and he said "we really like this, we're going to do it". So that was my introduction to being a professional writer! I think working with plays to start with is a great training ground if you're going to write fiction later, because with a play it's very important to introduce the characters, work out how they get on and how they get off the scene; how they convey their personality through their words. So it's been a good training ground. Jenny: Have you done quite a few scripts? Rhys: Not many. I probably did four or five and then not for many years. When a movie company wanted to do Her Royal Spyness, they said "would you like to write the script?" I said no. It's a different world, and I'm not in it anymore. So I'd much rather have someone who knew about scripts compose it. Jenny: Has that actually made the screens yet? Rhys: No, an English movie company bought it and was going gang busters with it and then the producer who'd actually been the one who was keen on it went to another company. So it died a natural death unfortunately. This happens all the time. They had paid me a nice lot of money for it, so I'm not actually complaining too much!
