Today I sat down with Vanessa Beaumont, a former literary agent and novelist about her debut novel The Other Side of Paradise which follows Jean Buckman, a young American newspaper heiress, who arrives in London in the glittering 1920s, and evolves throughout the story, through personal tragedy and loss. Over the course of the story, we watch her grapple with the pressures of mid-Century society on a woman, what it means to do one's duty, and the pull of desire in the face of it all. It's kind of a Downtown Abbey meets Francis Scott Fitzgerald, with a modern feminist perspective As always, Vanessa picked the four books which have had the biggest impact on her as both a reader and a writer, and we also discussed her career trajectory. Before publishing The Other Side of Paradise, Vanessa spent 8 years as a Commissioning Editor at Short Books, and co-founded and ran a literary agency, so it was fascinating to get some insights from that. It was such a great conversation, and as always, such a pleasure talking with Vanessa. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Vanessa Beaumont's four books were: Little Women, Louisa May Alcott (1868) The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton (1920) Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh (1945) Tender is the Night, F Scott Fitzgerald (1934)

Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered what it's like to podcast without your third wheel? Listen as we hilariously navigate our latest episode without Hayden, who's still trying to reach us from the great beyond (or possibly just his couch). We kick off with some playful teasing about his absence and the "punishment" we have in store for him—watching "Scales: The Mermaid Tail." Things get even funnier when we trip over "Downton Abbey," calling it "Downtown Abbey," sparking a cascade of side-splitting commentary. We've got big plans for a future episode where our significant others share their top movie and show lists, and maybe even take over the podcast for a day. Plus, don't miss our shoutout to our social media channels where you can join the fun and stay connected.Ready for some nostalgia? We take you on a trip down memory lane, recalling the origins of our recording setup and the financial sacrifices each of us made to bring this podcast to life. Tom spills the beans on securing an apartment solely for our sessions to avoid household chaos, and we relive the hilarity of Hayden's cat crashing our gaming nights. This episode is a rollercoaster of laughter, memories, and anticipation as we reveal our top five movies or TV shows featuring our spouses and partners. Trust us, you won't want to miss this must-listen episode packed with humor and genuine moments. You sound a bit nasal.I've got a little bit of a cold.Okay. I suppose it adds a different type of charm.Yeah. And it's a good thing. It's audio, I don't look that great at the moment. All right. So, chitchat aside, let us get into today's topic. You know, when a lot of Chinese people when they think about British or English drama就很多人看英剧的时候, I think they start with, you know, what you call it? Big houses, servants, lords, ladies…Yeah. Kind of like sort of period drama. So for example when I was watching Downtown Abbey.Yes. And also some episodes of Miss Marple like Agatha Christie's, Yes. So it's that time, it's the early 20th century. It's the era of the manor house.I thought today let's focus on that. What did you say? You called them Manor houses. Well. There's lots of different names for them. You can call the manor houses, country houses or stately homes.Manor is m-a-n-o-r.Yeah.What does that mean “Manor”? Well. The manor was basically the big house and the land around it. Yeah. So, we would still say, for example, the lord or lady of the manor.By the way, statistically and realistically, how many British people still live or still own that type of manor houses?Very very very very few. It's not just, I mean just being rich, is not enough, is it?No. Well. You get some rich people that they do buy these big houses, they probably don't own much of the land around them. But the thing is - incredibly expensive to keep. And normally if you're looking at more of a traditional manor house, it comes with a lot of responsibilities.Responsibilities? I thought that's just a private home, you just take care of it like we do to our houses or flats. No, traditionally being the lord of the manor means that you have very close ties to the village, because the land is so big or it was so big that they would have its own little industries, it would have its own farms. And, it comes with a lot of responsibilities for the villagers, the people who live nearby.Oh, that's why. I'm sure a lot of you when you are watching TV shows like Downtown Abbey think about Lord Grantham.

可以搜索公号【璐璐的英文小酒馆】或者添加【luluxjg2】加入社群,查看文稿和其他精彩内容哦~Hi everyone, and welcome back to Britain Under The Microscope. So 安澜, usually you would propose the topic, today let me propose one. Okay, that sounds rather dangerous. I think it's something that you do have some knowledge of, not a lot, but some knowledge of. Okay. Let's talk about fashion and clothing in the UK.You are right. I don't have much knowledge on that at all.But I can vouch for 安澜, I think he's got a pretty good sense of style. Oh, thank you. Now first things first, when people think of your fashion or clothing in the UK, I think perhaps a lot of our Chinese listeners would have certain stereotypes from old movies, period dramas, like Downtown Abbey for example. Yeah, there's a lot… I've noticed as well like for example when I buy clothes on 淘宝, it would say things like London style or kind of English style clothes, and I look at them and think well, yes, they were English style clothes but when my grandad was alive. I see, well, but retro, vintage. So first things first, let's start with the fact that you don't really have “national dress”. Right?Like for us, you think about 旗袍 or for Japanese you think about kimono. Yeah, UK doesn't really have a national dress. Generally, the clothes that we wear are very similar to the clothes that worn in other parts of Europe, and also in America. Did you guys invent like suit就整个那种西服套装是…Yeah, we did.So obviously everyone knows a suit and many of our listeners probably own maybe one or two if not more suits. Originally it was a British invention, it was invented in the 18th century because before then people would dress in very colorful clothes, very intricate clothes you know that required lots layers, but actually a really famous British dandy called “Beau” Brummel invented a suit where the focus was it's gotta be simple, elegant, and how you show how rich you are or how wealthy you are is by the use of the fabric, it's by the use of the quality.

On the 28th August 1981 in Ripon, North Yorkshire. It was a hot and sunny bank holiday weekend.Ripon is a small city with a beautiful cathedral. It has a racecourse and is actually the closest city to Downtown Abbey. Ripon is sadly also known for a very different reason which will forever be part of it's history. Erin joins Bonnie on a trip to England to check in on Louisa who is in need of a new job. Working for Will Traynor was not what she expected, and that is mirrored in Erin's experience with this movie, not knowing the storyline. The film is faithfully adapted since the author also wrote the screenplay. And your favorite franchise is likely represented by at least one of the actors here (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Victoria, The Crown, Hunger Games, Ozark, Mission: Impossible, Downtown Abbey, Doctor Who...). Pull on your stripey tights and #liveboldly.

This week Jim gets a Henry full of wasps, Elton does battle with a gargantuan spider live on air and Lee goes to "masseoke". And during this time all three try very hard not to say anything that will get our doors kicked in by royalists, republicans, secret police or members of Centre Parcs management. Then after some Event Horizon feedback its on to a film featuring that nice Hugh Bonneville, because anyone who has been in Downtown Abbey and also looked after Paddington can't be all that bad can he? We'll find out soon enough as we review Netflix's I Came By.
The business of life is the acquisition of memories. In the end that's all there is." The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" have returned from a recent power outage and are even more powerful than ever, or so they believe. The guys are watching two very different movies this week, 1944's "Double Indemnity" and 2016's "Shin Godzilla," to combine into a new project. Available on Spotify and Apple Episode 348 includes: -The game of chicken that Ezra Miller continues playing with Warner Brothers takes a few new turns, also more MeToo news. -R.I.P. respected character actor Phillip Baker Hall. -Nate runs through several mildler romantic comedies like "Downtown Abbey," "Father of the Bride," and "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande." -Turns out "Jurassic World: Dominion" is even worse than you feared. -"Lightyear" is solid mid-range Pixar. -Switch the Pitch -- "Double Indemnity" / "Shin Godzilla" -The guys discuss the 2016 very talky, very in-the-weeds of government technospeak Godzilla movie, where it loses them, and then Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir classic that has less shine for Ben, and then they attempt to combine them into a new project about insurance fraud via giant monster destruction.

Christopher Smith is one of the best genre directors out there. And yet not many folks know of him or who he is. His list of films consist of some genre's top work including CREEP (2004), SEVERANCE (2006), BLACK DEATH (2010), DETOUR (2016), and his masterpiece TRIANGLE (2009). Now in 2021, he has a new film entitled THE BANISHING (2021) found on Shudder. When an Anglican priest, his wife Marianne (Jessica Brown Findlay), and her child move into a new home to service a community, a dark secret begins to present itself to Marianne as she begins to explore the large manor. Soon a strange man (Sean Harris) appears warning of corruption and dangers that sound more insane than possible. Eventually Marianne discovers that things aren't what they seem and a dark past may come back to endanger them all. THE BANISHING stars DOWNTOWN ABBEY star Jessica Brown Findlay in a showcase role. Also in the cast includes John Heffernan, Sean Harris, and Jon Lynch. Receiving mixed reviews, the movie has been promoted strongly by Shudder. Your co-hosts take a look at the latest genre film by the underappreciated Christopher Smith.
