This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. South Africa's mining industry is investing R46-million in an action plan to eliminate fall-of-ground (FoG) fatalities. The FoG action plan is being implemented through Minerals Council South Africa with the assistance of its Rock Engineering Technical Committee, and supported by the South African National Institute of Rock Engineering, the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa, and the South Africa Colliery Managers' Association. "We know it is possible to restrict fall-of-ground deaths to six and so certainly, from where we are today, the next breakthrough must be zero fatalities. We cannot aspire for anything less than that," Minerals Council South Africa CEO Mzila Mthenjane emphasised during Friday's day of learning at Emperors Palace Convention Centre, east of Johannesburg, which was covered by Mining Weekly. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Highlighted during the well-attended event was the need to establish improved underground workplace visibility, permanent workface aerial mesh protection, and, likely, hydropowered drills and drill guides. The plan's six pillars are adoption of leading practices, research and development, human resource development, policy considerations, which are ultimately in the hands of government, operational discipline, and the close monitoring of the expenditure of R46-million. "It's a very good vision and we constantly review it," Mineral Council safety and sustainability deputy head Lerato Tsele told the audience, who were invited to pose questions. Set in motion has been research into hazard warning systems, loose rock scanners, and wearable exoskeleton devices to be worn when removing that loose rock. Exoskeletons reportedly bolster human performance in physically demanding tasks by supporting various body parts, including the hands, lower and upper back, legs, shoulders and arms, which is said to reduce the amount of energy required when lifting and carrying heavy objects and holding heavy tools. Crucially, the FoG action plan also comes with a promising skills development boost plus an updating of learning material. The event began with a moment's silence in remembrance of FoG fatalities and injuries, 60% of which occur in the stope face. This is why considerable innovation and technology is being directed towards improving the safety of these areas, as part of the plan being led by a CEO Zero Harm Forum. In 2022, the lowest FoG fatalities of six were reported, which was 73% down on the previous year and a record that still stands. For the past 20 years, the number of FoG fatalities has been reducing, with the first fall below 100 in 2004, when 96 deaths occurred. Six years later in 2010 FoG fatalities fell below 50 and the next breakthrough was in 2015 when FoG fatalities were fewer than 25. But it appears to be getting tougher, reflected in the ten latest deaths. "There are ups and downs, but it's not a time to give up," said Mthenjane. "There's a need for those who will look ahead in terms of what is upcoming that will be useful, whilst we implement current technologies that are proven … and what is going to become much more important moving forward is behaviour," he added. "Perhaps not too much of a focus on when we're going to get there. It's not a race. It's something that is urgent, and it's something that we do need to achieve sooner rather than later because it means that more people will be going back home to their families. "Part of the solution lies in how we leverage innovation and technology," he said. The Isidingo drill has proven its capability. It is much lighter than the pneumatic drill, more energy efficient, considerably quieter, and easier to handle. What these new technologies are showing is that mining is no longer about physicality and lighter equipment technologies are enabling more gender-diverse participation. Hydropower is lending precision drilling in the form...
This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist Minerals Council South Africa is looking at the possibility of promoting permanent aerial mesh support throughout the mining industry as part of its fall of ground action plan. The Minerals Council has a robust fall of ground action plan that targets several dimensions on the biggest contributor to mining incidents. "Many mines have adopted permanent aerial mesh support and we're looking at further adoption," Minerals Council head: safety and sustainable development Dushendra Naidoo said in response to Mining Weekly during a media briefing at Investing in African Mining. As part of the fall of ground action plan, the Minerals Council is also looking at the testing of exoskeletons, wearable devices designed to bolster human performance in physically demanding tasks by supporting various body parts, including the hands, lower and upper back, legs, shoulders and arms. This reduces the amount of energy required when lifting and carrying heavy objects and holding heavy tools. While exoskeletons are already being used to help workers in a range of industrial applications globally, ranging from painting buildings to warehousing and car manufacturing, not much has been said about how they might be used in mining - one of the most dangerous and labour-intensive industries. "That's quite a key intervention. We're testing quite a range of these systems to assist in the barring process. So essentially that removes a person from the unsafe rock that could potentially fall," said Naidoo. Barring is the removal of loose rocks from the walls and ceiling of an underground mine using a long steel pole, is notoriously risky work, with many fall-of-ground deaths being attributed to this process over the years. Barring causes significant strain on the back, shoulders and arms of even the strongest and most physically fit mineworkers. This makes them unable to do the job effectively for more than a few minutes at a time, after which they become too tired to continue. This can negatively affect the barring and, consequently, put other workers in jeopardy. Having an exoskeleton can possibly alleviate the need for barring rights close to high-risk areas. "That's one of the key things that we are going to be testing this year," Naidoo said. Eight exoskeleton systems from around the world are under scrutiny to see what best option for South Africa's mining industry in terms of implementation, practicality, and cost. The Isidingo rockdrill is viewed as drilling cleanly, neatly, and simply. Its lightness is key for adaptation for female employees to use underground. "If you can drill cleanly, neatly, and simply, you can make the blast a far more efficient process by having a cleaner blast. "Another key thing as part of the fall of ground action plan is we have a rock engineering technical committee comprising skilled people who have been in the industry for many years with very heavy rock engineering expertise. "They are involved in this programme and their input is key to guide the process and to look at the best way forward. "We're also looking at seismic monitoring, systems patented in the past that involve acoustic monitoring of the rock and telling way ahead of time wat is happening ahead at the face," he added. Cleaner cutting systems that can mitigate the need for blasting are also being studied. These could facilitate the clean excavation of rock and are also being looked at for low-profile mining. In 2021, there were 22 fall of ground fatalities, in 2022, these fell to six and then doubled to back up to 12 last year. "But if you have a look at the trend, which you must never under-estimate, the hard work that the members are putting in. Its's not a quick pause and tomorrow things will be safe. "It doesn't work like that. We've got a huge number of programmes. How much effort does it take to come to a trend, to really see that we're on the road to zero harm. "It's n...

he long-standing use of water to cool underground mines is increasingly providing the opportunity to apply the free water pressure head that this offers to energise mining equipment. High-pressure water technology, a proudly South African technology, has advanced markedly over the last couple of decades, turning South Africa into a global leader in water hydraulics for mining. “From humble beginnings back in the 80s, high-pressure water power has gone mainstream,” Hydro Power Equipment (HPE) director Ulrich Kienle told Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview this week. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Some 50 different mine sites are using water hydraulics as the primary powering medium to drive rock drills and mining machines and equipment can be configured into delivering any kind of mining solution using high-pressure water power. Several mines on the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex have integrated modern trackless mining equipment with water hydraulics for doing board-and-pillar bolting activity - “a very interesting example of how you can fuse modern water technology with sophisticated trackless equipment”, said Kienle, who sees water energy as the opportunity for the South African mining industry to ensure longer life-of-mine and do things in a better way for the benefit of all stakeholders and society at large. Amid the Eskom power crisis and the need for sustainability, water hydraulics is on the receiving end of unprecedented recognition: "We're beginning to have the kind of conversation with the mining industry that even a decade ago was not possible because the urgency just wasn't the same as it is today,” said Kienle. “We live in a world today where sustainability, green credentials, decarbonisation are all big issues. Being able to use less energy to produce an ounce of gold or a ton of rock, and being in a position to not contaminate the environment, or precious water resources, means you're doing things in a way where the principles of ‘use less, don't contaminate and reuse' are a given with water hydraulic technology. “We've run a number of long-term production trials with some of the mining majors in both gold and platinum space and had these trials independently reviewed by third-party consultants that have put all sorts of measurement devices on to the water lines,” added Kienle, who believes that, “water ticks all the boxes”. Mining Weekly: What opposition does mining with water face in water-short South Africa? Kienle: It's one of those myths that we've worked really hard to dispel. At face value, people always say, mining with water in a water-scarce country, does it really make sense? The answer is an absolutely categorical 'yes'. Water hydraulics are efficient, they get the job done quickly; whatever water you have as a footprint on a mine site, that water is simply pressurised. It is then utilised and comes back out of the mine with the process continuing in a closed-loop cycle, with some losses to evaporation. How financially competitive is high-pressure water power? This is one of the big surprises. Initially, when water hydraulic technology was developed, it was quite expensive. Over the years, economies of scale have come into play and the technology today is surprisingly affordable. WATER HAMMER TECHNOLOGY Building blocks are available that are configured into a mining solution using water power. "Those tools all exist. What we're particularly excited about are the latest developments. The first is what we call the Isidingo drill, which is in commercial use at six of our South African mines. We have combined it with a drill guide that allows us to deliver precise drilling and, as miners will tell you, good drilling makes blasting easy and good blasting means that you get maximised rates of advance and production. It also uses much less water than prior generation water drills. "The second is about man-free boxholing. it's really quite clear that putting human beings into boxholes is p...

We all have our favourite soap operas, whether it be Isidingo, Uzalo, Muvhango or 7de laan. We love how the story lines are always ready to shock us whilst having dinner, after the children's bath time or before we get back to the books. Last week 7de laan, that airs on SABC2, had their first same-sex passionate kissing scene on your screen. Leaving viewers gasping, some dropping their forks and others feeling safe, included and understood. Stacey and JSbu caught up with Deanre Reiners (Shawn) who was at first very anxious of pushing his acting talent to the limits, but decided to turn this opportunity into an on-screen moment that would speak to people who felt that they had no voice and to promote inclusivity among our “fellow South-Africans” as President Ramaphosa would phrase it. Deanre speaks out about how his family, friends and the public had reacted and how Twitter lit up after the episode aired. He pinpoints the fact that 7de laan aims to “reflect a society as a whole.” Deanre also emotes gratitude when he speaks about how his girlfriend supported him from the get-go and then drops the small detail that his father is a pastor.
