Natalie Doig is fascinated by myths and legends. Indeed, such is her passion for that which is "weird, wonderful and a little off kilter" that she stepped back from her career working in the disability rights sector to make a podcast about it. Called "Weird in the Wade", a recent episode explored the tale of "Blind George of Anstey". Natalie joins us to discuss Blind George and the issues the story raises about how blindness is perceived. Also joining the discussion are Dr Rod Michalko and Professor Tanya Titchkosky. Both have studied societal attitudes to blindness and have written extensively about it. They share their feelings about Blind George and their take on what blindness actually is versus common assumptions. What happens when you leave a situation that is holding you back and you start betting on yourself? Anything becomes possible in the case of today's guest, Vicki Anstey. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her, this former advertising professional, turned fitness pioneer and award-winning entrepreneur, became (at age 41) one of the first ever women to participate in Channel 4's ‘SAS Who Dares Wins', reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, she and two other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her most recent endeavor was a five day race in one of the northernmost, remote parts of the world, The Arctic. She covered a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive.Up next? She and a team of three other women (Four the Record) are tackling the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. They are attempting to break the women's world record in this event. On paper, Vicki is an avid adventurer, but her biggest achievements are less about the adventures, and more about her self-discovery. In times of adversity and extreme difficulty, Vicki learned to tap into her self-reliance, trust, and emotional endurance.Today, Vicki shares her personal story with Sara, including:Her career changes and personal growth from advertising executive to entrepreneurHow she followed her gut instincts, which led to Vicki opening the first Barre studio in the UKThe personal and professional growth that stemmed from leaving her controlling relationshipHer transformation from “non-athlete” to extreme adventurerOvercoming her personal fears and adapting to challenges in all of her experiencesLessons learned from her personal and physical adversityHoning the skill of emotional endurance, which involves understanding, processing, and letting go of emotions, rather than just tolerating themDeveloping the muscles of self-reliance, mental toughness, and resilience, especially in times of turmoil and extreme personal difficulty What's next? Another World Record attempt at RAAM and how you can helpVicki's story is one of wild bravery and self-knowledge, but her true wisdom comes from her own internal journey and ability to understand her strengths, remain emotionally resilient, and overcome her fears. We take a short wander away from Biggleswade, over the county border into Hertfordshire in this episode. Nat Doig tells the tale of Blind George of Anstey. It's a folktale with a bit of everything, a secret tunnel, a blind fiddle player, a faithful dog, the devil, and a ghost. Nat also explores myths and legends around blindness including busting some modern myths with her guest Paul Day. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this edition of Mid Atlantic, Roifield Brown discusses the aftermath of recent triple by-elections in Britain, which have been bad news for the Tories. Labour secured victories in Selby and Anstey, overturning a significant Tory majority, while the Liberal Democrats unseated the Conservatives in Somerton and Frome. The by-elections were triggered by Boris Johnson's resignation, and the Tories managed to hold on to his old seat in Uxbridge and South Ryslip with a reduced majority. These by-elections highlight UK voters' increasing tactical decision-making, leading to shifting fortunes for parties in different constituencies. The discussion delves into the significance of each by-election and their potential implications for Rishi Sunak and the Tories. While the results are bad for the Tories, Corey Bernard argues they are not as disastrous as predicted. The program also explores the impact of local issues on election outcomes, particularly in Uxbridge and South Ryslip.Additionally, the conversation touches upon the challenges of party cohesion within Labour, citing a mismatch between the National Labour outfit and regional mayors. Despite Labour's wins, the discussion raises questions about their ability to secure victories in traditional Conservative and blue wall seats.Overall, the by-election results suggest shifts in voter behavior and signal potential challenges for both major parties in future elections. If it feels like the US relationship with China is a tinderbox waiting to explode, chalk some of it up to political expedience. Leaders on either side of the Pacific have played the blame game for years, faulting each other for their troubles while failing to enact necessary reforms at home, says economist and China scholar Stephen Roach. Meantime, these “false narratives” have built up so much animosity that a new Cold War has emerged, he says. The fight, as Senior Editor Chris Anstey explains, potentially spans everything from rules governing the internet to the most mundane facet of consumerism. On this first Stephanomics episode of the new year, we feature a double shot of brewing economic and political conflict between the US and its Western allies on one side and China on the other. Host Stephanie Flanders talks with Roach about his new book, Accidental Conflict: America, China, and the Clash of False Narratives. Things didn't have to be this bad, says Roach, a former chief economist for Morgan Stanley and now senior fellow at Yale Law School. Years ago, the US and China regularly held big economic and strategic forums. Nowadays, Chinese officials have Zoom calls, or Joe Biden and Xi Jinping meet on the sidelines of a G20 summit, accomplishing “nothing,” Roach says. What happened? Roach says the deterioration of US-China relations stems from a zeal for blaming the other side for one's own shortcomings. US leaders routinely blame China for the large trade imbalance favoring the Chinese, Roach says. To be sure, China is the biggest source of the imbalance, but countries run trade deficits because they fail to save. “And when you don't save and you want to grow, you import surplus savings from abroad, and you run massive current account or balance of payments deficits,” Roach says. In China, leaders know they need to rejigger their economy to reduce dependence on exports and investment while bolstering domestic consumer consumption. But it's easier just to blame the US for constraining its growth, Roach says. In a lighter segment, Anstey explains a growing rift between the US and China. He does so by way of the lowly desiccant, those small packets of silica gel that keep moisture out of everything from new sneakers to electronics. Last year, China decided the world needed a new production standard for desiccant packets, part of a much larger effort to influence standards on everything from desiccants to internet protocols. The latter would give Beijing a larger say in how things are made globally. Ultimately, US representatives helped kill the new desiccant standard, much to the delight of sneaker, textile and food companies who figure one desiccant is as good as the next. Still, the fight over production standards is heating up, and where moisture-reducing packets are low-risk, cybersecurity experts worry more about China's efforts to influence internet standards.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Melbourne Tigers left possibly the biggest imprint in Australian basketball history, winning four NBL championships in fifteen years (1993 to 2008) and being home to basketball royalty like Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Mark Bradtke and Chris Anstey. Al Westover, who was born in California and originally left the states to join the Tigers as a player during the 1970s, re-joined the team as a coach in 1992 and was a part of all four of the club's championship runs. Al, who left the Tigers after playing in one NBL season with the team, returned eight years later to assist head coach Lindsay Gaze, a partnership which lasted until 2005 when Lindsay retired, and Al was named head coach. In his first year as coach, Al not only won the NBL Coach of the Year Award but won the NBL championship with a re-tooled roster featuring Chris Anstey on his return from stints in the NBA and Europe. Two years later, Westover and Anstey won another NBL Championship, a feat that saw Westover become the first coach in NBL history to reach the Grand Final in each of his first four years as coach, resulting in two Championships and two Runners Up. Four NBL Championships and four runners-up later, Al was unceremoniously fired from his coaching role with the Tigers and never coached again in the NBL. Westover remains the second-winningest coach in NBL history (134-74 win-loss record). Topics include... This week we celebrate the Fourth and final qualifying round of the FA Cup. Yes, the Step 1 clubs join the competition but our focus is the clubs from Step 5 who began their competition journey in August in the Extra Preliminary Round. First up though @FACupFactfile Mr Phil Annets provides us with stats and insight into the 32 ties. He offers some insight into the stresses and strains of hosting a big club when you are a small Step 5 village side with plenty of ambition. Also from Step 5 Ashington FC who have by contrast a lengthy away trip facing them which means a more relaxing week for Chairman Brian Shotton but no less pride, passion or expectation Rounding up the week's news is Editor at Large at The Non League Paper Matt Badcock with more managerial changes and what's ahead in this weekend's issue.
In only our second podcast recorded with a live audience, The Rev'd Associate Professor Matthew Anstey joins Dom, Peter and Sue for a conversation about scripture and the relationships that matter most in our lived experience. What does our sacred text, in dialogue with tradition, reason and experience, have to say to sacred relationship? And how are these relationships and our interpretation of scripture impacted by the dynamics of power in the world and in the church? This conversation offers the hope that when we listen and attend to scripture and the Spirit, we will see and know the beauty of relationships characterised by freedom, mutuality, integrity and commitment. Matthew is Priest-in-charge at St Theodore's, Toorak Gardens, Adelaide, and an Old Testament scholar.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For the next few weeks, we'll be coming to you with conversations I had at one of my favorite cafes, Farm Girl in South Kensington, London. This week's guest is Vicki Anstey, an almost overwhelmingly inspiring woman. Vicki is a world record holder, adventurer, award-winning entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and athlete. After 20 years in a relationship that limited and stifled her and a successful career as an advertising professional, Vicki became a fitness pioneer and later one of the first ever women to participate (at age 41) in Channel 4's SAS Who Dares Wins, reaching the final stages after 11 days in extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,000ft in Chile. In 2021, exactly a year before this episode was published, she and 2 other women, the Girls Who Dare, set a new World Record for rowing unaided across the Pacific Ocean, confronting her fear of deep, open water to do so. It took 60 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes. Her latest endeavor was a 5 day race in the Arctic, covering a distance of over 230km in temperatures of -35 degrees, carrying everything she needed to survive In 2023, she plans to participate in the World's Toughest Bike Race, the Race Across America (RAAM), covering 3,000 miles across 17 states in just 7 days. Listen as we discuss:How Vicki realized her extraordinary potential at age 40.Her memories from SAS Who Dares Wins (video here) and surviving interrogation.Pushing your limits and learning how to get through them is the only way to evolve. Why Women adapt better to calorie and sleep deprivation. How her ongoing divorce became a useful comparison for tolerating present suffering.Rowing the Pacific Ocean dealing with fear, storms, and talking to the moon. When you're already in the arena, fear becomes less of a concern.Vicki was in her past life. What should you do if you're not reaching your potential? Our guest this week is former professional basketball player Chris Anstey. Chris and our host, Emma Doyle grew up playing tennis together from the age of 10 at Maribyrnong Park Tennis Club. They have remained very close mates ever since. Emma seized the opportunity to interview Chris when he recently visited her in Denver, Colorado while on a tour to the US to watch his daughter, Izzy Anstey, who plays for the UCLA basketball team. Please find below some of the highlights that you will hear about coaching for success in sport and the workplace. Worse Coaching Moment – when you are ‘trying' to 'show' your ability to coach. Anything you accept and walk past on day one of your coaching job, you need to accept for the duration of your tenure. Coaching Women's Sports – Educate your female players to hold tightly those people who compliment you and the positive affirmations you get. Embrace differences – don't just do things because other people have always done them. Find time in everything you do to invest in yourself. You can't be motivated every day but what you can have are incredible habits and behaviours. Are you prepared to get a little uncomfortable even though you don't know what the outcome is going to be yet? How do you deal with a superstar within a team – “I always coach the best player the hardest.” Statistics should be used like a lamppost, for support, not illumination.” You have to build a culture around people, not around the data. Parents – “Let the coach, coach.” Don't only coach the what, coach the why? Athletes and team members want to know the why. Chris Anstey is a father of three, and a former professional basketball player, whose 17-year career included stints in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Russia and Spain. A 2-time Olympian, World Champion and World Championship MVP, Chris also played for the Melbourne Tigers, South East Melbourne Magic, and Victoria Titans in the Australian NBL. He retired as a 2-time Championship winning captain and MVP, with 3 NBL titles to his name. He became the Melbourne Tigers head coach in 2012. Anstey was selected at #18 in the 1997 NBA Draft, becoming the first player in history to be drafted from Australia's NBL. Chris has coached male and female basketball teams at all levels- professional, world and national championships, state, high school, and club.
