Video Rackham.

'Europe's Security and Defence: Where We Stand' Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 transformed the threat perception for many European democracies. Russia has emerged as Europe's most powerful and menacing power, willing to retool its economy for war and accept hundreds of thousands of casualties in the pursuit of territorial conquest. In response, democratic Europe is re-arming and providing unprecedented assistance to the defence of Ukraine. Brigid Laffan, Carsten Søndergaard, Marcin Terlikowski, and Ben Tonra will join this edition of IIEA Insights to assess Europe's preparedness in an utterly changed security environment and what the election of Donald Trump as US president means for the US commitment to European security. Brigid Laffan is Emeritus Professor at the European University Institute in Florence and was Director at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies until her retirement in August 2021. Carsten Søndergaard served as a Danish diplomat until August 2022. His final position was as Denmark's Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2018-2022). Marcin Terlikowski is Deputy Head of Research at the Polish Institute of International affairs. Ben Tonra is Full Professor of International Relations at the UCD School of Politics and International Relations and Project Leader for the IIEA's policy group on European Security and Defence.

Chris Carstens unpacks the "ars celebrandi" called for by Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. A proper ars celebrandi 1) sees God as the proper subject of the liturgical "masterpiece," 2) encourages liturgical ministers to depict this great, divine beauty through docility to the Holy Spirit's inspiration and the Church's rites, and 3) forms the baptized to see God's glory revealed in the liturgical rite through a mystagogical catechesis. In short, when a liturgy centers on God, celebrates the rite in such a way that God's glory appears (as on Mt. Tabor), and trains the people to encounter Christ in the rite--true beauty appears in our midst and in our world. The Institute for Liturgical Formation will focus on these three aspects: 1) theology of the liturgy (the Trinity's presence and action in the liturgy), 2) the ritual celebration of the liturgy (how the Church's ministers understand and execute the liturgy), and 3) the participation and spirituality of the liturgy (how God's people engage and pray the liturgy).

In late August, Russian Riverkeeper and the California Coastkeeper Alliance got what looks like a very significant ruling in their challenge to Sonoma County's well permitting ordinance. The groups say that by allowing excessive and unmonitored groundwater extraction, the County is failing to protect surface flows in creeks and rivers that fish, wildlife, and recreation need. The court agreed, holding that under the Public Trust doctrine, Sonoma County has an affirmative duty to take the public trust into account in the planning and allocation of water resources, and to protect public trust uses whenever feasible,” but that the County failed to do so, overlooking impacts on the public trust, including cumulative effects. In this episode of the EcoNews Report, Friends of the Eel River Conservation Director Scott Greacen and EPIC Executive Director Tom Wheeler talk to three people deeply involved in these questions.• Rue Furch, former Sonoma County planning commissioner and veteran Russian River advocate.• Don McEnhill, the Executive Director of Russian Riverkeeper.• Drev Hunt, Legal Director for California Coastkeeper, and one of the attorneyson the case, with Jaime Neary of Russian Riverkeeper, Daniel Cooper of SycamoreLaw, and Amy Minteer and Michelle Black of Carstens, Black and Minteer LLP.Further reading:• A Landmark Victory for California Waters - California Coastkeeper Alliance • Why You Should Care About the Public Trust Doctrine - Russian Riverkeeper Support the show

In this episode, we talk with Dominic Carstens who participated as a Perpetual Pilgrim in the recent National Eucharistic Pilgrimage  This event was a precursor to the National Eucharistic Congress held in Indianapolis on July 20 – 21, 2024. The Pilgrimage consisted of four routes, East, West, North, and South which made the shape of a cross over America. Each group took our Lord, present in the Eucharist, as they made their way across the country ministering to everyone they met. Dominic was on the Seton Route from the East that began in Connecticut. Dominic's love and enthusiasm for our Lord is quite evident in the presentation of his experiences along the way as he walked and traveled with our Eucharistic Lord! Dominic's sports experience began humbly in a cow pasture in Wisconsin. After graduating from high school, Dominic was a missionary in Kenya where sports was a way to connect with the children. He graduated from college this year and works at the Catholic Ecology Center. Dominic encourages us all to grow closer to our Lord, especially through the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist and to encourage others to do the same. At 11 years old, Roger Carstens, already an avid news consumer, was struck by stories of genocide in Cambodia. He resolved that when he grew up, he would work to alleviate human suffering. That mission took him to the Army and jobs in the non-profit sector and government, including his current role as the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs. In this job, Amb. Carstens works tirelessly to bring home Americans wrongfully detained across the globe. He talked with David about what keeps him up at night, the importance of entering negotiations with humility, his journey with spirituality, and his focus on the families of the hostages he works to free.

Prior to Jord, Keri spent 14 years at Corteva Agriscience, where she led global regulatory strategy, served on the leadership team to build and launch Corteva's seed applied technologies and biologicals businesses, and held key roles in regulatory science and program management. In 2019 she was recognized as a Laureate in Corteva's R&D organization, one of the company's highest honors for scientists. She is a recognized industry leader, having served as Chair of the American Seed Trade Association's Treated Seed Committee, and served in steering roles for the Honey Bee Health Coalition and Entomological Society of America. In addition, Keri holds adjunct graduate faculty status at Iowa State University, where she mentors graduate students and co-teaches in regulatory toxicology, pesticides, and seed technology courses. Keri earned her B.A. in Biology and Education from Wartburg College, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Toxicology and Entomology from Iowa State University. She and her family enjoy their farm outside of Ames, IA.In this enlightening episode of the Intentional Agribusiness Leader podcast, host Mark Jewell engages with Keri Carstens of Jord BioScience in a conversation filled with insights on purpose-driven leadership, team building, and creating a resilient, adaptable culture within a rapidly transforming agribusiness landscape. She brings to light her journey from environmental scientist to CEO, illustrating her belief in taking calculated risks and making data-driven decisions. The discussion delves into the nuances of cultivating a startup environment that encourages ownership mindset, fostering transparency, and measuring culture as intentionally as business strategy.Key Takeaways:Intentional leadership entails being purpose-driven, with a clear understanding of why individuals and teams show up to work every day.Building a resilient team is crucial for startups; hiring for passion, curiosity, and the ability to adapt to constant change is key.Culture should be actively measured and managed, similar to any other business strategy, with defined metrics for assessment.Carstens articulates the importance of hiring individuals who can embrace change and find opportunities in challenges, contributing to a positive work environment.Developing an 'owner mindset' among employees is pivotal, fostering a sense of personal accountability and shared successes within the company.Notable Quotes:"Being intentional as a leader, it's being purpose-driven. Why are we here? Do we all know why we show up at work every day?""I'm a believer that things happen for a reason. There is a reason that I'm in this seat, that you are in your seat.""What you are measuring is what you will deliver on.” “If you say you care about being results-driven or having transparent communication with employees, whatever those core values are… then what does that look like and how are you going to measure that? What does culture look like now versus 1 or 2 years from now, as we grow?” "Positivity is contagious. So thinking about how you use that with your team, it doesn't mean everything's always sunshine and roses… But things happen for a...

Abroad, alone, and locked away on trumped up charges, it's the stuff of nightmares. Yet for one year that has been the reality for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who is being held in a Russian prison on the charges of espionage. Charges he, and everyone who knows him, deny. Now, a Moscow court has extended his detention by three more months. At the same time in Gaza, more than a hundred hostages are still held captive after being taken during the brutal October 7th attack on Israel. Negotiations to release them -and build a ceasefire- have dragged on in Qatar for months. As the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger Carstens is at the heart of both these crises, and he joins the program to talk about it.  Also on today's show: correspondent Melissa Bell; Annelle Sheline, resigned in protest from US State Department; Widlore Mérancourt, Washington Post Reporter  Learn more about your ad choices. The leader of the bank for central banks—the Bank for International Settlements (BIS)—is sounding the alarm.  Just this week, BIS general manager Agustín Carstens told reporters that “The global economy is at a critical juncture.” And according to the bank's just-released annual report, if inflation isn't tamed and consumer prices remain high for much longer, banks could see credit losses of a “similar order of magnitude” to those of the 2008 financial crisis.  The comments are jarring, particularly on the backs of three bank failures earlier this year. BIS's typical stances—which are usually more reserved—also lend gravitas to the statements. “The resilience of the financial system will be tested again,” the report reads. “Pockets of vulnerability remain. Recent events have shown how the failure of even comparatively small institutions can shake confidence in the overall system.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Marty Bent is a Venture Partner at Ten31, founder of the Bitcoin-focused media company TFTC.io, and Director of Cathedra Bitcoin. In this interview, we discuss the potential implementation of a global financial system based on CBDCs and the role of the Bank of International Settlements (BIS). We also talk about the potential role of Bitcoin in fighting against state actors. - - - - CBDCs are the unwanted concomitants of Satoshi's innovation: the state's answer to the settlement improvements offered by Bitcoin, without any of the fundamental design features predicated on protecting individuals in the digital age. They represent everything Satoshi was working against: the chance for the state to fully capture and control people's use of money with all of the inherent dangers to democracy and individual liberty that this brings. Technological developments akin to CBDCs were always going to manifest, but, it is obviously not a coincidence that work on them accelerated in the shadow of Bitcoin. For over a century, governments, central banks and other centralising institutions have had an unfettered ability to control and manipulate money; money printing and inflation rigged the system in favour of the dealer. Bitcoin offers a chance for a new and fairer system. Whilst it is easier for those with knowledge to identify the extreme contrast between the two forms of money, it is also clear how and why people believe CBDCs are a good idea. The state has an asymmetric power in pushing narratives; promoting the benefits of having the utility of instant digital transactions that safeguards against paedophiles, terrorists and money launders, will certainly seem like an incontestable advancement. It's just that we know this isn't the purpose. The ring leader in this global effort to retain central authority over money is being led by the Bank of International Settlements. The BIS is behind a number of pilot projects that sound like they were devised by a megalomaniac James Bond villain (Project Rosalind, Project Polaris). Playing the role of Blofeld is Agustín Carstens. In 2022 Mr Carstens stated “the soul of money belongs neither to a big tech nor to an anonymous ledger. The soul of money is trust… central banks have been and continue to be the institutions best placed to provide trust in the digital age.” Carstens believes that technology can't make trusted money.
