This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. Her TV guest-star credits include New Girl, Shonda Rhimes' For The People, The League, Rules of Engagement, NCIS, and the Peabody award-winning satire American Vandal.Behind the mic, she has voiced countless characters in TV, films, trailers, commercials, and some of the biggest video game franchises around, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A two-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, she has narrated the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the National Book Award finalist Sabrina & Corina, and the New York Times's non-fiction best seller Random Family to name just a few. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, then spent a year teaching English in Madrid, Spain. Wendy Williams didn't hold back during a rare interview on The Breakfast Club, where she addressed Sean “Diddy” Combs' mounting legal troubles, her personal experiences with the music mogul, and her ongoing fight for independence amid health challenges. Host Charlamagne tha God revisited Williams' controversial departure from Hot 97 in 1998, suggesting that Diddy played a role in her firing. Williams confirmed the speculation, stating, “Diddy will go to prison for life, people.” “You don't know things I knew about Diddy back in the day,” she continued. “And you want to know what? It's about time, people, it is about time. Diddy done.” Williams did not elaborate further on what she claimed to know about Combs, but her comments added to the growing discourse surrounding the embattled music mogul. Combs, who was arrested in September on sex-trafficking charges, has pleaded not guilty and is currently in jail awaiting trial, which is set to begin May 5. In addition to the criminal charges, Combs faces dozens of lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct, including a new claim that he drugged and raped a 16-year-old girl in 2000. In response to the allegations, Combs' legal team has denied any wrongdoing. “No amount of lawsuits against our client will change the fact that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted, or sex-trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor,” his lawyers said in a statement to Rolling Stone. Williams' history with Combs dates back decades. In her 2004 book The Wendy Williams Experience, she alleged that Combs tried to sabotage her career during her tenure at Hot 97. Speaking to New York magazine in 2005, Williams said it was her “belief” that Combs played a role in her dismissal, referencing rumors she had spread about his sexuality. Following Combs' recent arrest, Williams claimed vindication. “Multiple people told me I called it,” she told the Daily Mail in November. She also criticized footage from 2016 that appeared to show Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. “But now you have to think, how many more times? How many people? How many more women? It's just so horrible,” she said. During the interview, Williams also opened up about her own struggles. Her TV show was canceled in 2022 following a series of health-related absences. She has since been placed under guardianship and was diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. However, Williams remains defiant, telling The Breakfast Club, “I feel like I'm in prison. I'm not cognitively impaired.” Her remarks sparked both support and controversy, adding another chapter to the ongoing saga of two public figures navigating turmoil. #WendyWilliams #SeanCombs #Diddy #LegalTroubles #Hot97 #EntertainmentNews #CelebrityControversy Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? From loving TikTok to enjoying cold readings playing “delightfully stupid” characters, Mary Testa is a talented actress who's “not on a stardom path and never will be”. She starts off where her acting journey began: choosing between law school and performing. Ultimately, she pursued the latter and eventually moved to New York in 1976, explaining why she just likes working on interesting things with people she loves. She discusses self-taping auditions during the pandemic, and that while she believes it's better to be in the room for auditions, she understands the preliminary role of self-tapes. Known for playing strong-willed characters, Mary reflects on her career as a character actress. She recalls asking Michael John LaChiusa to write a role for her as “a very stupid character”, challenging the usual type casting she gets. She also admits to loving cold readings, the spontaneity, and the challenges that come with them. Reflecting on her journey, she gets real as she talks about perfectionism, how insecurities can lead to tyrannical behavior, and why self-awareness and being comfortable in your own skin is important to keep you grounded. Mary Testa is an actress with a phenomenal career spanning almost 50 years, which includes 12 Broadway shows such as “Oklahoma!”, “42nd Street”, and “On the Town”, resulting in her three Tony Award nominations. Her TV and film credits beginning in 1979 include “Cagney & Lacey”, “Sex and the City”, “Whoopi”, “The Battery's Down”, “Eat, Pray, Love”, and “The Good Fight”, “The Blacklist”, and many, many more. For Tony Award winner Maryann Plunkett, she will always be a shy person. But thanks to theatre she's learned how to enter a room and own it. Currently playing as Older Allie in the Broadway adaptation of "The Notebook," Maryann delves into her approach to embodying the character, the collaborative process with her co-stars and director, and the importance of observing her fellow actors to create a seamless portrayal of Allie across three different ages. With previous experiences on Broadway, she notes that her last starring role in a Broadway musical was in 1987. She reflects on her decision to return to musicals, and how she resonates with “The Notebook”, seeing her role as a way to honor her mother who lived with dementia and showcase the importance of entering the world of those affected rather than dismissing their experiences. Maryann gets more personal as she talks about her family, how she met her husband on an episode of a television show, and their first kiss… which was actually scripted and caught on film. Growing up shy, she opens up about overcoming her struggles through theatre, and “the power and strength in living one's life in a way that one can be proud of.” Maryan Plunkett is a celebrated actress and singer who has captivated audiences on both Broadway and the screen for decades. Her career began on the prestigious stages of New York, most notably with her Broadway debut as Sister Agnes in “Agnes of God”, but it was her portrayal of Sally Smith in “Me and My Girl” that truly launched her into the spotlight and earned her a coveted Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical in 1987. She has delivered powerful performances in plays, including but not limited to Arthur Miller's “The Crucible”, “Sunday in the Park with George”, replacing Bernadette Peters, “A Little Hotel on the Side”, “The Master Builder”, and “A Man for All Seasons”. She also spent 12 years doing Richard Nelson's “Rhinebeck Panorama”. Her TV and film credits include “Bull”, “Chicago Med”, “Little Women”, “Blue Valentine”, “Dr. Death”, and “Manifest”. She can now be seen as Older Allie in “The Notebook” on Broadway, which just nabbed her another Tony award nomination. For caregivers of a multi-racial families, hair care can be stressful and overwhelming. How do you provide the best care for your daughter or know what products to use?  If you've had these questions, or felt overwhelmed and defeated by this topic, we have good news. Tony Award Nominated Acress Shalita Grant from the shows NCIS: New Orleans and You most recently, joins our show to discuss her new brand, Four Naturals Hair and provides a TON of hope and insight for caregivers just like you! About Shalita... Shalita Grant was raised in Petersburg, Virginia and attended high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland where she was a YoungArts Winner in Theater and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. At 17, she received a scholarship to attend the Julliard School for her B.F.A. in Drama, graduating in 2010. She starred as Cassandra in "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" on Broadway, for which she earned a Tony Award nomination for Featured Actress in a Play and won the 2013 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Her TV credits Include, NCIS: New Orleans, Santa Clarita Diet, Search Party and You. In Shalita's words... My journey with Four Naturals started with a ponytail. As an actress with Type 4 hair, the tightest texture on the hair chart, I faced unique challenges while on NCIS New Orleans. My ever-changing ponytail concealed the damage I was chasing. I experienced traction alopecia in my second season and significant hair loss along my hairline in the third season, leading me to leave my job by the fourth season. I experienced a hard truth: No matter how much money you have or who you have access to, if you have type 4 hair, your options are limited to wigs and extensions, getting locs, or just cutting it all off. After quitting, I recognized my hair as my number one acting career problem and set out to solve it. In 2019, I began reading journals and articles from the world of Cosmetic Chemistry - absorbing everything there was to know about the three parts of the hair strand, hair porosity, cationic and anionic charge, and more. After reading, I understood that everything I was taught to do to care for my fragile, fickle type 4 hair was pure ritual! No wonder I could never solve my chronic issues with dryness and breakage.  I then researched the hair practices and ingredients used by the people of India, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Greece and created the patent-pending Four Naturals Treatment. I combined hair science and plant medicine and solved my lifelong issues with dryness, breakage, lack of curl definition, lack of established hair routine, and heat damage.  The first treatment, I couldn't quite believe my results - my hair felt softer, the color was richer, and it appeared thicker, and my hair felt heavier! However, by my third treatment, my hair was undeniably different. I had the best hair of my life! It was so easy to maintain, unbelievably soft and strong, and I could flat iron it without the heat damage requiring a Big Chop. So, I created Four Naturals Hair, and my mission is to make the lives of people with Type 4 hair better, easier, and more consistent. Best of all, because my treatment addresses the hair health concerns of people whose needs have been ignored for generations, it solves everyone else's health concerns. I see the Four Naturals Treatment as the beginning of a hair revolution. How To Connect With Shalita... Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Episode Summary:  This world is demanding, especially when we shoulder the burdens of our family, friends, and work—as well as the heaviness of world events. So we often feel overwhelmed, stuck, afraid, and believe we are never enough. If we aren't careful, we can build walls that hinder us from thriving in who God created us to be. In this episode, we discuss what is holding you back? I'm excited to talk to Krissy Nelson who shares from her own story and will help us identify some of the most common walls that hold us back. She draws from biblical stories and truth to give us spiritual and practical tools to bring those walls down, rediscover a vibrant life of joy and move forward from weary survival to daily revival through Jesus. Quotables from the episode: Questioning our identity in Christ is an attack from the enemy. He aims to bog us down in defeat, insecurity, perfectionism and shame so we cannot thrive in who God says we are. We are His revived, beautiful, vibrant children. We are full of life and hope and called to live joy-in-Jesus lives. We build walls around us that actually hold us back; walls like insecurity, fear of failure, doing too much. Insecurity allows us to see God move in our life. We need an encounter with our King Jesus in which our hearts are revived all over again and the walls boxing us in crumble to the ground. Faith is key to moving past what holds you back. You are valuable and are not alone in your struggle. Talking to Jesus and exposing the lies you're fighting to your community and family—even starting with one person—starts a new pattern of freedom, community, and connection. Once we shatter the lies that hold us back, we have to keep from rebuilding them.   Scripture References: Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Philippians 4:6-7  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.   Recommended Resources:  Say Goodbye to What Holds You Back: Shatter the Walls Surrounding You and Believe What God Says About You by Krissy Nelson  The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms   Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the Christian Literary Awards Reader's Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. Brittany Nicholas is currently back on Broadway playing the role of Viola, as a swing, the understudy for Angelique, and as the dance captain in the runaway hit “& Juliet”. Perhaps unbeknownst to many, her Broadway debut was actually "Billy Elliot", where she was universal swing (before that was ever a thing!). She shares the wild story of how it all happened, and how it was all a blur. She looks back on her childhood, dancing since she was four all the way through gymnastics training in high school. In fact, her love for dancing became the gateway for her to get into theatre after joining Destination Broadway. This discovery eventually inspired Brittany to audition for…literally everything, eventually becoming a swing for “Billy Elliot ” without knowing what a swing was yet. She also shares when her journey with “& Juliet” started, and how her “Matilda” journey played a part in it. Being in a show where she gets to sing songs she grew up with, it's the most fun Brittany's ever had. Having multiple responsibilities in the show, she reflects on how she looks at the big picture and makes sure she knows everything—a seemingly challenging task that Brittany makes look easy, all thanks to her talent and passion for making things happen. Brittany Nicholas is a multi-hyphenate artist who made her Broadway debut in “Billy Elliot”. She was part of the original cast of “Mean Girls” and has starred in the National Tours of “Billy Elliot” and “Matilda the Musical”. Her TV credits include Marvel's “Hawkeye”, and “America's Got Talent”. Brittany is also a teacher, gymnastics coach, competition adjudicator, and dance captain. She is now back on the Broadway stage in the runaway hit “& Juliet” as Viola, as a swing, the understudy for Angelique, and as the dance captain.
