Endurance News: Racing In A COVID World We are so close to racing in a COVID world! Pools are beginning to open up. Gyms are doing the same. A few races are sticking to their calendar and are appearing to be a go in the next couple of months. But just because I am saying “racing in a COVID world” it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be business as usual. Here are my coaching tips on what to do different in your training to be ready for a race experience that too will have a very different look and feel than in the past. Ironman Return to Racing Guidelines and Self Reliance Tips Ironman Return to Racing Guidelines Enhanced Hygiene Screening and Education Density reduction Touchpoint Minimalization Athlete Self-Reliance Athlete Self Reliance Tips The following tips focus on the IRONMAN athlete’s ability to be self-reliant on race days. These are skills every athlete should possess to assure their personal safety while training and their ultimate success on race day. Practice these skills today and repeatedly as you prepare for your event. IN-TRAINING BUILD SELF-RELIANCE AS YOU DEVELOP YOUR FITNESS How do you carry nutrition? Your long training day prep should always include the tools you will use on race day. Practice using a hydration pack or race vest on long bike and/or run days. It's Independence Day. Let's talk about people who thought it was ok to own people creating a country in which everyone is owned - by doing no more than writing their names down on paper and signing said paper. 350 years later, most people still think I have some obligation to those words written on that paper? Why is that? Orwell was right. Voting is violence. You needed to hear that. Taxation is theft. You probably needed to hear that, too. How bad does it have to get before you will take action? You've probably heard that all human action is driven by one of two things, avoidance of pain or achievement of pleasure. It's Independence Day here in the US and as I'm writing this I wonder...was it pleasure or pain that motivated the Founding Fathers? As you are reading this right now, there is something you want to do. Something you want to accomplish. It might be a big, legacy type outcome...or maybe something small, like a raise or a promotion. In either case, you have to do something to make it happen. See, the truth is that you already have the freedom you seek, you're just keeping it locked behind excuses! All you have to do to have the freedom you so long for is just choose to act! Now, bear in mind...choices come with consequences and freedom comes with responsibility. You have the freedom to choose friends that will build you up and support your journey...and that comes with consequences related to your existing friends. And then there's family... It's kind of like getting your driver's license. Yes, you get an immense amount of freedom when you can finally drive yourself where you want to go. But you're also doing so in a 2,500-pound projectile that is more than capable of killing you and others. With that freedom comes great responsibility! So today, as you celebrate our nation's freedom, remember: - freedom isn't found in waiting for the answer - freedom isn't found in researching and reading - freedom isn't found in sitting still No, freedom (and it's requisite responsibility) can only be found by being bold, brave, and taking action! What action will you take TODAY to move yourself one step closer to the life and lifestyle you crave? Leave a comment and let me know! Enjoy! It's Independence Day! We got gripes about the Verizon-turncoat now-Sprint guy (a modern day Benedict Arnold-- theme synergy!), snipes about patronizing maternal song lyrics, and some healthy & fair skepticism towards the most recent Wachowski to transition. After a rousing update to a classic baseball tune while maligning the Chicago Cubs' sorry attempt at one, the logical pairing of LEAVING LAS VEGAS and TOY STORY 4 get that smooth, sexy BNB treatment. Happy 4th, ya blimps!
In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters
It's Independence Day! The perfect occasion for a special episode of In The Past Lane! This week, we take a close look at the document at the heart of the July 4th celebration -- the Declaration of Independence. There's a lot more to this patriotic piece of parchment than you might think. So here's the lineup: we'll start with a look at three key things about the Declaration and how it came to be -- including the fact that America's actual Independence Day is July 2, not July 4. Next, we examine the fascinating story of how American's understanding of the Declaration changed after 1800 and as a consequence, how it has inspired countless rights movements in the US (women's rights, labor rights, civil rights, etc) and around the world for more than 200 years. Happy July 4th to all! Episode 154 notes and credits Recommended Reading Pauline Maier, American Scripture: Making the Declaration of Independence Edmund S. Happy Fourth of July! It's Independence Day, and I'm finally putting up a new post. Today's recording was actually over an hour long, most of which was my listening to a fellow hiker tell me all his stories about encounters with Sasquach. I have no idea what to do with that.
It's Independence Day here in the U.S., and what better way to celebrate that than by talking with a self-made business owner? Meet Jon Lewis: designer, co-founder and chief product officer of Circa Victor, a political technology firm currently based in Washington D.C. Jon and his team infuse design thinking and technology into our nation's political system by empowering journalists, the public, and decision makers at every level of government. We started off talking about how Circa Victor got started, and Jon shed some light on what tech can learn from the government (and vice versa). From there, we talked about his upbringing overseas, his time spent in Hawai'i honing his craft, and what he feels it means to be a designer today. Jon's unique style and outlook on the design world are what sets him apart, and I'm glad for the opportunity to have him tell his story. Aloha!
