In this Independence Day Special, Josh Brown and I discuss our perspectives on an overview of American history. From the dreams of the Founding Fathers, through wars at home and abroad, times of great hardship and periods of immense prosperity, our great nation has survived for nearly a quarter of a millennium. On this episode we talk about where America is today, whether she resembles what our founders foresaw, and how her future might take shape in light of recent cultural trends.
Join Mikey and Ty as they celebrate America's birthday. They discuss their patriotic outfits, engage in fun American history trivia, and debate the quirks of various U.S. presidents. On this special Independence Day edition, Andrew Walworth, Carl Cannon, and Tom Bevan discuss the tradition of political oratory on the Fourth of July and preview three memorable addresses delivered to mark the occasion. First, a Fourth of July speech given by civil rights champion and former slave Frederick Douglass in 1852, followed by a reading of the speech by actor Ossie Davis, recorded by the Library of Congress in 1966. Next, a 1962 address by President John F. Kennedy given just days before the Fourth of July to Peace Corps workers in Mexico City. The introduction is followed by a recording of JFK's delivery of the speech. JFK delivered the remarks in response to the growing leftward movement of governments throughout Latin America just months before the Cuban Missile Crisis. And finally, a 1986 Independence Day address by President Ronald Reagan, followed by a recording of Reagan's delivery of the speech. The speech was given from the deck of the aircraft carrier the USS John F. Kennedy in New York Harbor, as part of a celebration of the restoration and centenary of the Statue of Liberty.

Howdy y'all, want some coffee? It's the Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast. G'day to ya. There was a lot to celebrate this week, as we hosted an Independence Day Special - no not a celebration of the Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith movie - that 4th of July one. Festivities naturally included lots of horrific accents and a Morgan Freeman impersonator. We also celebrated International Kissing Day, as Dominic Byrne's 50 at 50 saw him pop into Leicester Square and get kissed by some strangers. So hygienic. Joining us for a chat this week was everyone's favourite Soap Star and Gang Interviewer, Ross Kemp, who confessed to being an ‘arrogant little twit' back in the day. Boxer Josh “The Leeds Warrior” Warrington stopped by and organised a training session with Chris. We have arrived at the 247th birthday of the United States of America. I am old enough to remember the Bicentennial celebration back in 1976. We were a proud nation. We considered ourselves the greatest nation on earth. And that belief was rather universal throughout most segments of American society. It's safe to say that is the case no more. Recently, I accompanied our high school students on a mission trip to Scotland and England. The people over there are fascinated with all things America. The teachers in the schools told us that all their students want to live in America one day. It was then I realized that I had lived long enough to see the people of other nations have a more favorable view of our nation than does the dominant narrative in the media, education and corporate world. This media of the United States as an evil empire rife with colonialism, white supremacy (the cause for every ill of society), patriarchy, racism, and every other negative ism out there. Yet the rest of the world sees us differently. What a sad state we find ourselves in almost 250 years into our nation's history.
What is Independence Day all about? Do Americans know why we celebrate the 4th of July? Is there important information being left out of our history books? Who gave us our freedom? What was their faith? How did they sacrifice? Tune in for part one of a special Independence Day broadcast!Support the show
