Jack McDade is the creator of Statamic, a content management system for Laravel. What I love about Jack is how he approaches all of his projects, including Statamic, to just be different. There is so much cookie cutter content out there and everything just ends up looking the same - but not if Jack has anything to do with it. Just take a look at his personal website, his Radical Design course and Icons and you'll see what I mean. I love it.

Jack McDade is a fun guy making a fun product. He is the founder of Statamic, a static website CMS built on top of Laravel. Building this company was not easy for Jack and the team, he says it took 6 years before he could stop doing client work. Jack has created the best branding I've seen in a bootstrapped software company. It's not just the design (which is awesome), it's the pricing, the mission, and the product. The folks at Statamic are doing something they believe in and having fun at it, and it shows. In this episode we talk about why he built a static website CMS, what that actually means, and his journey convincing people to buy it. Enjoy!

It's undeniable that agency owners and consultants have started to look at alternative WordPress CMS software solutions over the last two years. From talking to people here on the podcast to seeing consultants change business offerings after years in business, I can't help but feel it's healthy to know your options. While we've always known that WordPress is just a tool, it was always so hard to let go of the Swiss Army knife that has served us so well for over a decade in place of something new. My gut tells me that “indie” solutions, like Jack McDade's Statamic, are getting better as software stacks mature and hosting infrastructure costs go down. In other words, we can get a lot more for our money these days while people like Jack can build a sustainable business around it. I really enjoyed meeting Jack through the magic of podcasting — even if it took a good ‘ol fashioned cold e-mail to connect. I'd love to know what other alternative CMS or website builder tools you're using out there. Drop them in the comments below.
