It's a one-on-one conversation with Jonathan Bernier, diving into one of the more interesting entrepreneurial stories in the hobby right now. Jonathan shares how his journey started as a kid in the hospital receiving donated cards, eventually building a collection of hundreds of thousands of cards… and then facing a problem most collectors and dealers know all too well: how do you actually move that inventory? That problem led to the creation of Kronozio. We go deep into: The origin story behind Kronozio and how it was built out of necessity Why listing cards manually is one of the biggest bottlenecks in the hobby How automation and AI are changing the way people sell cards online The reality of scaling a hobby business from the ground up Why staying lean matters when building something long term The danger of “dead inventory” and why so many collectors sit on value Jonathan also explains how Kronozio works at a practical level, from scanning to listing to shipping, and how it can turn what used to be a slow, manual process into something that operates at scale. Beyond the product, this is really a conversation about execution, adaptation, and what it takes to build something over 10+ years in the hobby. Enjoy the show? Climate-tech founder Eben Bayer is on a mission to protect Spaceship Earth. And he says it's time for climate control, i.e. active measure that cool the Earth. Why? " Because all other reasonable approaches have failed miserably," he says, slapping the table for emphasis.Eben is the co-founder of Ecovative and MyForest Foods, the makers of MyBacon, which is sold in more than three thousand stores. It's a non-meat bacon, made from mycelium, which (more or less) means mushrooms roots. Fewer people eating meat —> fewer farting animals —> a cooler planet. And Eben's latest Earth-cooling idea is (nearly) out of this world. Eben wants to put giant parasols in the stratosphere where they could block sunlight from reaching Earth. With "shade-as-a-service" a maxed-out utility (say in Phoenix) could pay for shade to cool a city or an individual could pinpoint a shadow over their backyard for an afternoon barbecue. The idea is in its early stages, but Eben says it's feasible and it's the kind of big idea we need to get climate change under control. And while the idea of messing with the sun may sound scary, he says we alter the climate in all sorts of ways already: " We are geo-engineers. We farm animal livestock. We live on Planet Earth. We have impact. We emit CO2. We should not limit ourselves to modifying just one or two atmospheric gases to modify the planet. It's not how we operate, and it's an unbelievably constraining framing if you actually want to address this problem in a practical manner... When you start to take that frame, the options open way up."Eben is a fascinating guy — very steampunk in his approach to entrepreneurship — and I'm sure you'll find this interview eye-opening.And a special shout out to my field producer for this onsite recording from Troy, NY: my eleven-year old son, Julian! He was my camera and sound guy and he also makes his long-awaited (YouTube!) debut to ask Eben a question about protecting Spaceship Earth.

This episode with Prateep Basu, Co-founder and CEO of SatSure, is the deep-tech founder story India's startup ecosystem has been waiting for. Prateep Basu left a career building propulsion systems for India's GSLV MK-III rocket at ISRO to ask a deceptively simple question - why do urban Indians get 10 loan offers a day on WhatsApp while farmers wait a month for a single approval? The answer became SatSure, a Bengaluru-based Earth intelligence company that uses satellite imagery, AI, and government land records to deliver alternate credit scores for farmers, monitor crop health across bank portfolios, and help airports, insurers, and FMCG companies make smarter decisions from space. Bootstrapped for four and a half years before raising $25 million across multiple rounds, SatSure now monitors 1.95 lakh villages and has analysed over 2.1 million farmer plots. In this candid, wide-ranging conversation with host Akshay Datt, Prateep breaks down the physics of 40-pixel crop detection, explains why algorithms are never the moat, and reveals the strategic logic behind SatSure's audacious zero-bid for India's first private national satellite constellation. He also shares why AI is an accelerant, not a threat, for deep-tech companies that have built genuine domain depth. What you will learn in this episode:

My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/   In 2004, Eric Hochberger co-founded Mediavine, which would eventually become one of the most influential ad management companies on the open web. The company didn't start as an ad tech firm — it began as a scrappy collection of SEO-fueled fan sites, built by three founders chasing traffic in the early blogosphere. While selling $50 sidebar ads and offering SEO consulting services, Eric and his partners learned firsthand how fragile and inconsistent early digital advertising could be. That experience ultimately pushed Mediavine to build its own header bidding system in 2014, a move that quadrupled the company's ad revenue and transformed it from a publisher into an ad management platform. Today, Mediavine represents roughly 17,000 publishers and operates with a 140-person team, primarily serving independent creators rather than legacy media brands. In a recent interview, Eric pulled back the curtain on how programmatic advertising actually works, why "made-for-advertising" sites are siphoning off industry dollars, and how Google's AI Overviews are reshaping traffic patterns — sometimes wiping out entire businesses overnight.

Steve Reynolds didn't start TripBam to disrupt the global hotel industry—he simply noticed that corporations weren't getting the discounts they negotiated, and no one was checking. After 30 years in travel technology, he saw a broken system hiding in plain sight. What began in 2013 as a consumer hotel re-shopping tool quickly revealed a much bigger enterprise opportunity. When a corporate client offered to pay a subscription fee, Steve pivoted from B2C to B2B—and never looked back. TripBam went on to serve 250 of the world's largest companies, saving clients 5–10% on existing hotel bookings and up to 30% when switching properties.  TripBam grew to $8–10M in revenue, with 50 employees across the U.S. and Europe, and operated as a Rule-of-60 SaaS business. Then COVID hit, transactions dropped 95% in two weeks, and the company had to prove its resilience before ultimately selling in 2023 to Emburse. In this episode, Steve shares why pricing for 8x ROI made sales easy, how profitability and subscription revenue protected the business during crisis, what it's like selling into private equity, and why founders should think carefully before raising multiple VC rounds. Key Takeaways Disrupt Carefully – TripBam aligned with corporate buyers while disrupting hotels and agencies. Price for Stickiness – Targeting ~8x ROI made approvals simple and customers loyal. Profit Is Protection – Strong margins helped survive a 95% revenue collapse during COVID. Avoid Over-Dilution – Limited funding preserved founder ownership at exit. Deep Expertise Wins – 30 years in travel tech created a defensible moat. Quote from Steve Reynolds, CEO and Founder of TripBam "Fortunately for me, since I didn't take additional funding, I wasn't diluted multiple times. I've met so many founders and they go through rounds A, B, C, D, E, F, and next thing you know, they end up with 5%, 10 % of the company. And it just doesn't work.  "You might actually get to a rare big exit, but it's really not going to be all that meaningful for the founders, at the end of the day. I've never kind of fallen into that trap of just getting out in front of your skis. I tend to follow the cashflow and look guys, you know, we got to make it happen on the revenue that we're generating.  "We're not going to go out and bet the farm and borrow a bunch of money and create these crazy expectations, right?  Once you start taking outside money, you get someone else starting to make those decisions for you, whether you like them or not." Most people think the upside of building a tech company comes after success. Turns out, a lot changes long before that. The moment you start building something technical, your professional gravity shifts. Doors open. Conversations change. People listen differently. In this solo episode of Tech for Non-Techies, Sophia breaks down the benefits that show up early — before scale, exits, or headlines. Not hype. Not hustle culture. Just the quiet upgrades that compound over time. This episode is for experienced operators and business leaders who sense a gap in their market and are wondering whether it's worth acting on. In this episode, you will hear: Why building a tech product instantly reframes how others see your judgment and credibility The CEO-level skills you develop early and why they raise your earning ceiling How becoming "harder to bullshit" saves time, money, and bad decisions The social and professional compounding effect most people never see coming Resources from this Episode  FREE class: From Business Owner to Tech Founder, without the $100,000 developer disaster Join this class to learn: The 2-step framework to go from idea to scalable tech product Why smart business owners waste $100k+ on their first tech venture—and how to avoid it When AI helps vs. when it destroys products (and your ROI) Sign up here: https://www.techfornontechies.co/january Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. You've built a successful business before. So why does tech feel harder than it should? Here's the uncomfortable truth. The instincts that made you successful offline can quietly sabotage you when you build tech or add AI. In this episode of Tech for Non-Techies, Sophia breaks down the four traps she sees again and again among high-performing business owners. Not beginner mistakes. Smart, expensive ones. You'll learn why working harder often backfires, why "moving fast" can burn cash, and why delegation without product leadership creates chaos. Plus, what to do instead of learning to code or wasting six figures. This is about thinking clearly, sequencing correctly, and using your strengths without letting them turn into blind spots. In this episode, you will hear: Why doing "hard things" in tech often leads to burnout — not progress The quiet reason speed destroys value before a product is validated What happens when developers build their vision instead of yours The hidden cost of following tech advice that wasn't made for business leaders Resources from this Episode FREE class: From Business Owner to Tech Founder, without the $100,000 developer disaster Join this class to learn: The 2-step framework to go from idea to scalable tech product Why smart business owners waste $100k+ on their first tech venture—and how to avoid it When AI helps vs. when it destroys products (and your ROI) Sign up here: https://www.techfornontechies.co/january Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet.
