This week Dr. Jacob Lee joins in to talk about the real Jeremiah Johnson—and why Redford's version may be a fantasy. About our guest:Jacob Lee is a historian of early America and the American West, focusing on colonialism and borderlands. His first book, Masters of the Middle Waters: Indian Nations and Colonial Ambitions Along the Mississippi (Harvard University Press, 2019), embedded intertwined Native and imperial histories in the physical landscape of Middle America, a vast region encompassing much of the central Mississippi River valley. In the centuries between the collapse of the ancient metropolis of Cahokia around A.D. 1300 and the rise of the U.S. empire in the early 1800s, power flowed through the kinship-based alliances and social networks that controlled travel and communication along the many rivers of the midcontinent. Drawing on a range of English-, French-, Spanish-, and Illinois-language sources, as well as archaeology, oral history, and environmental science, Masters of the Middle Watersemphasized the power of personal relationships and the environment to shape the course of empires and nations. He is currently working on a history of the everyday operation of legal jurisdiction in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma and Kansas) from the 1820s through the 1850s. Tentatively-titled The Laws of Nations: Legal Jurisdiction and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Indian Territory, this project examines the ways that Indigenous nations, especially Cherokee Nation and Osage Nation, effected sovereignty over people and land through the assertion and exercise of jurisdiction over crimes committed within their borders. In adjudicating crimes ranging from murder to theft to bootlegging, Native nations repaired harms, defined citizenship, and exercised authority in the face of the efforts of U.S. federal and state governments to usurp and undermine Indigenous governance.
As Buffalo Bill's granddaughter consults the State Department about stolen family heirlooms, we bring first-time guest Jacob Lee on to the cast to explain youth culture to us fogeys (and also to unveil some exclusive Batman Forever trivia), then we appreciate Young Indy's descent into supernatural madness, and a delightful Eastern European romp from regular-age Indy... then things get pretty nuts during e-Words.

At Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, we welcomed Rev. Jacob Lee, the RUF campus minister at the College of Charleston, to our pulpit.
America's waterways were once the superhighways of travel and communication. Coursing through a central line across the landscape, with tributaries connecting the South to the Great Plains and the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River meant wealth, knowledge, and power for those who could master it. In Masters of the Middle Waters: Indian Nations and Colonial Ambitions Along the Mississippi(Harvard University Press, 2019), Jacob Lee offers a new understanding of early America based on the long history of warfare and resistance in the Mississippi River valley. Lee, an Assistant Professor of History at Pennsylvania State University, traces the Native kinship ties that determined which nations rose and fell in the period before the Illinois became dominant. With a complex network of allies stretching from Lake Superior to Arkansas, the Illinois were at the height of their power in 1673 when the first French explorers—fur trader Louis Jolliet and Jesuit priest Jacques Marquette—made their way down the Mississippi. Over the next century, a succession of European empires claimed parts of the midcontinent, but they all faced the challenge of navigating Native alliances and social structures that had existed for centuries. When American settlers claimed the region in the early nineteenth century, they overturned 150 years of interaction between Indians and Europeans. Masters of the Middle Waters shows that the Mississippi and its tributaries were never simply a backdrop to unfolding events. We cannot understand the trajectory of early America without taking into account the vast heartland and its waterways, which advanced and thwarted the aspirations of Native nations, European imperialists, and American settlers alike. The Callisto Protocol is a spiritual successor to the Dead Space series, and it takes place on a prison facility on the moon of Callisto, where a mysterious virus has turned the inmates into grotesque monsters. You play as Jacob Lee, a cargo pilot who has to fight his way through the horrors and uncover the truth behind the outbreak. The Callisto Protocol was praised for its amazing graphics, sound design, and atmosphere, but it also received some criticism for its repetitive gameplay, linear level design, and lack of innovation. So, how does the game hold up after one year? Has it improved with patches and updates? Is it worth playing or replaying in 2023? Let's find out.Support the showJoin the Good2Game Radio Community on Discord where we're talking games, movies and other fun stuff.https://discord.gg/6saqsna7
This week Jacob Lee joins Historians At The Movies to talk about the myth of the mountain man on film via 1972's Jeremiah Johnson and 2015's The Revenant. Basically, these films are beautifully shot and largely full of shit. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy them. Jacob and I talk a lot about the borderlands, sexual representation on film, and the role movies like these have in shaping the ways people think about American history. And of course, THE GIF.About our guest:Dr. Jacob Lee is historian of early America and the American West, focusing on colonialism and borderlands and assistant professor of history at Penn State University. His first book, Masters of the Middle Waters: Indian Nations and Colonial Ambitions Along the Mississippi embedded intertwined Native and imperial histories in the physical landscape of Middle America, a vast region encompassing much of the central Mississippi River valley. His second project returns to the region, which is a history of the Louisiana Purchase, tentatively titled An Empire Without Bounds: How the United States Conquered the Louisiana Purchase. In 1803, when the U.S. purchased claim to more than 800,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River, it possessed only the most tenuous hold on the region. This project explores the decades of negotiation and compromise, conquest and violence that followed, the processes by which the U.S. established and maintained authority over its western claims, and the ways that Native peoples and colonists limited imperial power in the American West.
