Audra Gaiziunas of Brewed For Her Ledger and Jonathan Wakefield of J. Wakefield Brewing are beer industry veterans well known for their Star Wars fandom. Jeff Cioletti literally wrote the book on how nerd culture and drinks culture overlap, with his book Drink Like a Geek. And Don and Em, both enormous fans of The Simpsons, end the show with an interview with Bill Oakley, former writer and executive producer of The Simpsons. Oakley wrote many episodes of The Simpsons and wrote the famous “Steamed Hams” segment. BSR always strives to shine a light on people moving the Beer World forward. Writers and editors are often the most thoughtful, impactful people in the worlds of beer, spirits, and hospitality, and we have two great ones on the show this week.Joining Jimmy is Jeff Cioletti, author of Imbibing for Introverts, and editor in chief of Craft Spirits Magazine; and Kate Bernot, Missoula, Montana-based reporter on beer, alcohol, and food, and director of the North American Guild of Beer Writers. This show came together to highlight Jeff's new book, and more broadly to talk about the state of “beer storytelling” from the past to the future. Plus, find out Jimmy, Jeff, and Kate's picks for their current favorite “thoughtful” beers that are pushing the scene forward (or taking it back to basics):Jeff: Pilsner UrquellKate: Taras Boulba - Brasserie de la SenneJimmy: Aventinus Weizen-DoppelbockTune in now!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. With COVID travel restrictions gone, I expect people to revert back to their old ways where January is the biggest travel planning month. I wade into the debate between booking direct with travel providers vs. booking with agents and 3rd-party sites. I see how well my travel tips did during the Southwest cancellation chaos, and then pull out a little more of my conversation with Jeff Cioletti, author of the new book Imbibing for Introverts; this time about how gin is going global with a local twist.Check out this episode's show notes here
Back behind the mic after 3 week of travel in Croatia and Italy. The trip went amazingly well up to the last leg, when United's Newark team couldn't get our bags on our plane. But, I'd stuffed Apple AirTags into our luggage, so we were able to track their movements 'til they got home. That experience and a listener's tweet led to me re-visiting my travel tech stack. We then talk to Jeff Cioletti, author of the new book Imbibing for Introverts, about the art of drinking alone.Check out this episode's show notes here
Episode 382 - Jeff Cioletti is Back (with yet another book!) Happy Monday, Thieves! We're talking to our old pal Jeff Cioletti today, who just happens to have a new book coming out in a couple of months called Imbibing for Introverts: A Guide to Social Drinking for the Anti-Social. It's about drinking for introverts and we talk about what that means in the COVID and post-COVID era. Jeff tells us about visiting dicey bars in LA at 8am on a weekday (in the name of “research,” of course) and the types of folks you might find there. It's a good, spirited discussion and we even have a little fun with yet another stovepipe in the black glass. Tune in and let us know what you think!***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. Our latest guest on The Craft Spirits Podcast is Michael Myers, the founder and owner of 291 Colorado Whiskey in Colorado Springs. At ACSA's convention in Louisville, Kentucky, last December, he joined Jeff Cioletti and Jon Page for a wide-ranging conversation about his path to making whiskey. A former fashion and beauty photographer who was in New York on 911, Michael launched 291 in 2011. He also discusses the distillery's distribution footprint; the ins and outs of copyrighting a cocktail; what it's like to see his bottles on TV shows; and the distillery's new space.
Vowing to make organic spirits from scratch, Sonat Birnecker Hart and her husband, Robert Birnecker, left academic careers to establish KOVAL Distillery in Chicago in 2008. Today the distillery's products are available across the nation and in 55 export markets. As president, Birnecker Hart spearheads product development, distribution and marketing. She recently joined Jeff Cioletti for a wide-ranging conversation, which includes her thoughts on the benefits of exporting spirits and how starting up the distillery during the subprime mortgage crisis helped KOVAL navigate the pandemic. They also go beyond KOVAL's whiskey and gin to discuss liqueurs and brandy.
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy nerds out about beer and more with Jeff Cioletti, author of Drink Like a Geek. Jeremy Cowan of Shmaltz Brewing, Doug Campbell of Brewery Ommegang, and beer writer, Ben Keene join in as well to try and put a finger on the genre of geeky beers they all love. Jeremy shares the process he underwent getting the rights to sell Star Trek beer and Doug describes how the flavor was developed for Ommegang’s Game of Thrones series. They also discuss the connection between craft beer and Comic Con, what butter beer would really taste like, and their craziest projects to date including a Pastrami Pilsner. Episode 247 - Evan Watson and Augie Play Hot Ones Happy Monday, Thieves! We're starting off the New Year with an episode we've been holding on to for a while. Back in November we gathered at Augie's brewery for a show with Evan Watson of Plan Bee. It was just around Augie's Birthday so we wanted to do something special and even torture him a bit. So, Dr. Watson cooked up some hot wings and we decided to do what that other hot sauce show does. It got ugly real fast, especially for Holl and most certainly for Jeff Cioletti, who gamely sat in on the show. Just like you can play at home with your own black glasses, we hope you'll resolve this year to punish your tastebuds and nervous system with some extreme hot sauces. It's best with friends and mugs of cold beer. Let us know what you think by chiming in on our social media pages or simply by emailing us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com**Want to support us? Our guest is Jeff Cioletti, the author of “Sake-Pedia: A Non-Traditional Guide to Japan’s Traditional Beverage”. Japanese sake is becoming popular in the US, which is now the biggest importer of the national beverage of Japan. But it is hard to find an easy and fun guidebook of sake. Jeff’s book is very handy for someone who is curious about it, for both beginners and connoisseurs. We will discuss why Jeff wrote the book, what you can learn from the book, what he learned from writing the book, and much, much more! Japan Eats is powered by Simplecast.
In the first episode of The Drinkable Globe Podcast's Genever Trilogy, host Jeff Cioletti sips along with Piet van Leijenhorst, master distiller at Lucas Bols distillery.
After last week’s brief layover in Colorado for a chat with WeldWorks, we’re returning to Spain this week. If you haven’t already, you can check out a thematic part one to this episode featuring Xavier Losada, brewer and bottle shop owner of Bee Beer Craft Beer and Cheeses. This time around, we catch up with Jeff Cioletti, a fellow writer and prolific traveler who’s long covered the world’s many alcoholic offerings. I’ve been lucky to know Jeff for some time, but we typically only see each other once or twice a year around the U.S. beer industry’s big events of the Craft Brewers Conference and Great American Beer Festival. In June, however, we found ourselves In Madrid as part of a short media tour hosted by Mahou San Miguel. It was as good a time as any to chat on and off the mic. Along with writing for All About Beer and DRAFT magazines, CraftBeer.com and acting as editor at large of Beverage World, Jeff has also written multiple books, including the most recent The Drinkable Globe, also the name of his website where he tracks the wide world of booze. Needless to say, Jeff is well versed in a variety drinks, history and their global connections, and continues to explore them. He’s most recently diving deep into sake. But beer is still where we can find a wheelhouse, and that’s what brought us together, so I decided it would be good to pick his brain about what he’s learned and continues to think about in beer and beyond.
In Part II of The Drinkable Globe's exploration of the Portland, Oregon drinking scene, host Jeff Cioletti sits down with Kate Koo, owner of Zilla, the pre-eminent sake (and sushi!) bar in the city.
In Episode 1 of The Drinkable Globe Podcast, host Jeff Cioletti welcomes Portland, Oregon-based beer writer Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible and creator of the Beervana blog. Alworth offers an insider's guide to drinking in PDX and shares some of his bucket-list beer destinations around the world.
This was a fun one for us to record, and it was the first time we recorded with a live audience! We had Jeff on our show the first time fairly early and he trusted us enough to a) hang out with us off the air and b) come back on the show. In this episode, we interview Jeff Cioletti, author of The Year of Drinking Adventurously. This episode is twice as long as our previous episodes, but we could have talked for hours with Jeff. You want a little adventure in your life. And why not? With thousands of breweries and distilleries in the United States, there are more choices than ever on tap and behind the bar. So many, that you’re a little bit intimidated. That’s where this week’s Fuhmentaboudit! guest comes into play – Jeff Cioletti, author of “The Year of Drinking Adventurously: 52 Ways to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone.” He shares that the book serves as a guide to getting out of your beverage comfort zone once a week for a year. Each of the fifty-two chapters features the story behind a unique beer, spirit, cocktail or wine, designed to broaden your drinking horizons. Some correspond with specific seasons or holidays, encouraging you to forget the million-dollar marketing-supported “conventional wisdom” and drink against the grain. It’s Cinco de Mayo? There’s much more to the celebration than lime-enhanced lager and shots of rotgut tequila. St. Patrick’s Day? Do you really want to be the 700th person of the evening to order a green-tinted brew and a shot of cheap whiskey? Tune in for more! “The tiki chapter I had a lot of fun with… I realize now everything is about context and drinking within context, it’s not just about fruity drinks!” [31:00] –Jeff Cioletti on Fuhmentaboudit!
Every once in a while, you might want to step outside of your comfort zone and try something besides whisky. A WhiskyCast listener asked for suggestions along those lines after hearing our October episode about Armagnacs, and we turned to Jeff Cioletti for answers. He's the author of the new book "The Year of Drinking Adventurously: 52 Ways To Get Out of Your Comfort Zone" and editor-at-large for Beverage World magazine, and he'll join us for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Diageo has bought a stake in Denmark's Stauning Distillery, while The Macallan and Glenfiddich are both planning new expansions. Glenfiddich's plans have a local politician concerned about "whisky nutters" crowding the roadside to take pictures. We'll also have details on some of the week's new whiskies, say farewell to one of Speyside's leaders, and taste three whiskies from around the world.
On this week’s Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy Carbone is talking about beer in the U.K. and in China. Beer writer John Holl is in the studio, talking about the culture of low ABV beers in the U.K. Jeff Cioletti, Editor-In-Chief at Beverage World, is also in the studio to talk about the stigma associated with cask ales across the pond. Patrick Donagher of GetRealPresents.com and Alewife NYC discusses his recent cask festival, and how beer lovers of all ages were enjoying cask beer. Later, Jimmy and company talk with Teddy Gowan of Dr. Beer in Shanghai, China. Teddy talks about beer trends in Shanghai and Beijing, and how the beer scene there resembles that of the United States before the craft brew movement. The studio guests talk about their favorite English and Scottish beers, and why so many beer bars in NYC tend feature macrobrews on tap and leave their lines dirty. This episode has been brought to you by GreatBrewers.com. “I think that in the U.K., there’s more of a sessionable beer culture. You’re finding more beers that are in the 3-4% range pretty much everywhere that you go, so you can have more of them.” — John Holl on Beer Sessions Radio “A lot of the thinking among some of the younger drinkers is, ‘Cask is my father or grandfather’s drink.’ Now you’re starting to see a lot more beer based on American craft beers- draft, but not hand-pumped.” —Jeff Cioletti on Beer Sessions Radio “The Chinese market is huge, and they’re just now getting excited about beer.” —Teddy Gowan on Beer Sessions Radio
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy Carbone discusses beer trends, new brews and craft breweries in Ohio with an esteemed panel of beer industry player including writer/author Josh Bernstein, Seth Wright of Beer Nation TV, Jeff Cioletti of Beverage World and Justin Phillips of Beer Table. I don’t mean everybody using their own grain and hops because that’s not feasible. But you can rely upon locally sourced ingredients and also become the best small brewery in town.” –Josh Bernstein on Beer Session Radio “What’s the point of traveling for beer if you’re having stuff you could just have at home?” –Jeff Cioletti of Beverage World on Beer Sessions Radio “After a few years of operating Beer Table and only pouring wacky stuff, I got to a point where I’m now interested in seeing brewers present classic simple drinks.” –Justin Phillips of Beer Table on Beer Sessions Radio
This week on Beer Sessions Radio (TM) host Jimmy Carbone brings you the guys who are making craft beer big in the Bronx: Chris Gallant and Damien Brown of Bronx Brewery. Along with Tony Forder of Ale Street News and Jeff Cioletti of Beverage World Magazine, the gang talks about the importance of malt and malt profile– from Breiss to Weyermann– and why the malt blend in beer is so essential, especially in these times when people are favoring hop-heavy beers. This episode is sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “I think malt is the most under-appreciated ingredient in beer and I’d like to see it get the appreciation it deserves.” –Jeff Cioletti on Beer Sessions Radio
