For this episode of Brewstilled, I'm joined by Portland Oregon based beer writer and podcaster Jeff Alworth. Jeff is the author of the Beer Bible and is a leading expert on beer. He's also the writer of the blog Beervana. In this episode I talk with Jeff about a wide array of beer topics such as his start as a beer writer, podcaster, where craft beer is today and beer in general. We also discussed what maturity looks like for a city's beer scene. The topic of beer as a whole is discussed as we as beer drinkers may need to see beer beyond the craft beer label. It's a fascinating conversation and it's all here on Brewstilled!
Užijte si to!
O Adventu probíráme příběhy kolem Ježíšova narození a dětství. Do tohohle dílu jsme si pozvali posilu - Elišku, farářku v zácviku.
Zkrátka krásný, poetický, biblický příběh o chlapech blbcích a hustých ženách. Celý díl najdete tady: https://herohero.co/pastoralbrothers
Znáte podcast Sociální Pivo? Jakub Marek a Jan Desenský si povídají o sociálních službách a u toho pijí pivo. To nám je samozřejmě sympatické, protože my si u piva povídáme o Bibli. Tak jsme si dali cross✝️over.
Proč to vůbec zajímá dva evangelické faráře? Proč to zajímá všechny křesťany? A proč by to mělo zajímat právě vás?
Koupit si ji můžete tady: atrosmedia.cz/tituly/83195812/bozi-pribehy-aneb-biblicke-bizary-od-pastoral-brothers/
Patří děti do bistra? A patří děti do kostela? Aneb náš velikonoční díl, kde jsme probrali prakticky celý velikonoční týden. Bez pomlázek, bez zeleného piva. Zato s vjezdem, poslední večeří, křížem a prázdným hrobem. Požehnané Velikonoce!
Je Hospodin Pán větrů? A co má společného duch, dech a vítr v Bibli?
A o čem?
Někteří zkoušeli zapálit i svoje děti.
Oregon is pretty close to my own personal idea of perfection. It has a little bit of everything, from vibrant, engaging cities, to sweeping, picturesque coastlines, and mountain high deserts. While the landscape is fascinating, the people and the culture might surpass it. Tucked into the northwestern corner of this Pacific Northwest gem of a state is a city with an outsized beer reputation. Today we're exploring Portland, Oregon. Known for its outdoor friendly lifestyle, craft breweries, coffee scene, and the looming presence of nearby Mount Hood, Portland is vibrant, lively, and full of character and characters. And in this episode, we explore not only the great local beer scene but the cast of characters who have put Portland firmly in the center of any discussion about the world's greatest beer cities. And to do so, we're joined today by perhaps the two best sources for the local beer scene.Jeff Alworth is a long-time beer writer, author of several books, including The Beer Bible, and the co-host of the Beervana Podcast. He has taught courses about beer and the business of beer and has freelanced for a bunch of publications. He is also one of the last beer bloggers standing. Jeff frequently posts his thoughts on beer, culture, and business at his award-winning blog, Beervana. He is a passionate advocate for all things Portland beer and we're lucky to have him this week to help guide us. Our second guest is Ezra Johnson-Greenough, who is the founder of The New School, which is a great webmagazine covering beer and cider in Oregon and Washington. New School is the kind of resource that every beer loving region would be lucky to have and as Jeff says, Ezra is the most plugged in source to the beer happenings in Portland you'll find. A native Portlander, Ezra covers beer industry news, style trends, and does interviews and offers commentary, along with organizing festivals and events. Stay tuned at the end of the episode to hear my favorite local place to have a beer and the place is a true character itself. No one episode could hope to capture all that Portland has to offer but that's not our purpose on this show. We're here to talk about the best of Portland's beer scene. So let's get our Portland visit started with special guests Jeff Alworth and Ezra Johnson-Greenough.This Episode is Sponsored by:Pub Culture BeercationsStop living vicariously through other people's social media posts and get out and make some memories of your own! Vejdou vojenský kaplan, školní kaplan a evangelický farář do místnosti s mikrofony a tohle vznikne.
Povídali jsme si o křesťanských Vánocích a židovské Chanuce. Co mají společného? Řešili jsme taky, které tradice máme rádi a proč některé Vánoční zvyky hejtíme. Na jedné důležité věci jsme se shodli.
O Advent očekáváme druhý Ježíšův příchod, neboli Boží soud. Proto bychom měli probrat peklo a otázku, kdo v něm skončí. A kdo o tom rozhoduje?
Pivo máme rádi, to jste si asi všimli. A někdy játra překvapíme vodou.
Zasloužil si to? To a ještě mnohem víc věcí vám povíme v našem podcastu. Tentokrát pijeme ostravské pivo Ogar. P.S.
Known as Beervana for a reason, Portland, Oregon is maybe the premier beer destination city in the United States. Summer Craig recently spent some time getting to know the beers of the Pacific Northwest, and he got some help from accomplished beer writer Jeff Alworth. The Beer Bible author gives us the story of Portland's beer proclivities and how they don't always follow the national trends. Also, Jeff gives us good Portland beer history, explains how the hazy trend might've actually started out west, and tells us whether or not “smoothie sours” made it into the recent reprinting of his book. We also review five stellar beers from Portland breweries, yell stuff at HackerMan, conceptualize Inkblot Brewing, and try to solve a beer snob mystery. Jeff Alworth Interview (00:14:58 - 00:51:24) Beers Reviewed Breakside Brewery w/ Barley Brown's Beer - WanderJack (American IPA) Ruse Brewing - Wolves in the Rain (West Coast IPA) Wayfinder Beer - Original Cold IPA Little Beast Brewing - Dream State (Foeder-aged Ale w/ strawberries) Upright Brewing Company - Pathways (Blended saison)
Over a century ago, walking down the streets of Newark, constant reminders of Newark's preeminent brewing and beermaking industry would have scattered the landscape. Massive factories like Ballantine's and Kruger's would have churned out hundreds of barrels of lager and ale each day. Ornate mansions built by the owners and executives of these brands dotted neighborhoods. That is to say nothing about the hundreds of bars, taverns, and taprooms throughout the different ethnic communities throughout the city. While many have ascribed Newark's success with brewing to the water flowing from the Appalachian Highlands to the city, the story is really a demographic one. Newark was host to English, Scots-Irish, German, Polish, and Irish (Catholic) immigrants, all with proven beer cultures that they brought from the Old World. It was this great demand for beer along with the requisite know-how that launched the city into the pantheon of great American beer cities. Nevertheless, a combination of Prohibition, deindustrialization, and a mass exodus of many of these same immigrant groups all but hollowed out Newark's brewing industry. The only remnant of that industry, for decades, was the Anheuser-Busch plant that straddles the Newark-Elizabeth border. Steve Hughes, co-owner and operator of Newark Local Beer, is looking to turn this narrative around. Launched in 2021, Newark Local Beer sits at the base of Walker House on Broad Street and offers over ten different beers on site. Steve came onto the podcast to discuss his vision, why he is brewing in Newark, and what the brewery has in store for the city. Guest:Steve Hughes—Steve and his wife, Miller, are the owners of Newark Local Beer. He was born and raised in Hanover, New Hampshire. Miller grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio. As craft brewing has revived interest in taste and variety, we're seeing preferences diverge from country to country. . . . Belgians are making hoppy beers, and Americans are making Belgian ales. The French are making cask ale, and the British are discovering craft lager. These trends get fed back into the cultural mill, shifting and mutating until they've created something yet again different and new. We can't know how beer will taste in fifty years except to say this: It won't taste like it does now.”—The Beer Bible by Jeff Alworth
If you're a beer enthusiast, you've likely come across Jeff Alworth at some point. The longtime blogger, journalist, author, and podcaster is one of the most valued in the country, and his research and storytelling is nearly unmatched. This isn't meant to be hyperbole, as the reason Jeff and I are talking on this episode is because we got to catch up as he traveled the country to promote the second edition of his book, The Beer Bible. We sat down outside at Asheville, North Carolina's Zillicoah Beer Company, to talk about his book and his own education and growth as a journalist and human. In the first half of this conversation you'll learn about what went into creating The Beer Bible and then recreating new parts of it for its new edition, and on the back half we chat about what it means to explore ideas of beer today, whether that's the hops that go into a beer, or the way we think about styles. And if you haven't yet read, heard, or met Jeff, I hope this conversation is a worthy introduction to someone who is kind and meaningful in their work and how they move in the world. We can learn a lot about beer by reading and listening to Jeff's work, but I hope this episode helps you appreciate him as a person as well.
Jeff Alworth, an award-winning beer writer based in Portland, Oregon is our guest this week. Jeff has authored five books on beer, The Widmer Way, The Secrets of Master Brewers, Cider Made Simple, Beer Tasting Tool Kit, and The Beer Bible. A second edition of the Beer Bible was released in September 2021, and we took the opportunity to discuss beer broadly and through a social lens. We explore evolutions within the brewing world, fluidity of beer styles, how the proliferation of information on traditional Scandinavian and Baltic beers impacted his thinking of farmhouse ales, and how his telling of beer history has shifted. Whether you're new to beer or have tried 10,000 beers The Beer Bible is an inviting, enriching read. Jeff publishes almost daily on his blog Beervana, which you'll find linked in the episode notes. And that's where our conversation kicks off. This week Brewery Travels heads to one of the nation's craft beer hubs: Portland, Oregon. Joining Joel this week are Jeff Alworth (Beer writer, blogger, podcaster, and author of The Beer Bible) and Lisa Morrison (Co-owner of Belmont Station and former beer writer and podcaster who has the nickname “Beer Goddess”). The trio talk about several topics, ranging from why Portland became a city that spearheaded the craft beer movement, changes they have both witnessed to the beer scene, and the ups and downs of the pandemic for local breweries. You can follow Jeff on Twitter: @beervana or Instagram: @jeff.alworth Joel has visited over 700 breweries across 44 states plus Washington D.C. and has been able to make connections with many amazing individuals because of his travels. He is currently living on the road with his family, constantly “exploring more content and doing extensive research” (which just means visiting breweries and drinking beer)! The goal of Brewery Travels is to provide more information about craft beer scenes from around the country and shine a light on some of the excellent individual breweries that call these cities home. From Portland, Maine to San Diego, California. Austin, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota. The bright lights of New York City to the farmland of rural Iowa. Brewery Travels plans to run the gauntlet of locations, providing in-depth information on as many places as possible. With episodes coming out weekly on Thursdays, Brewery Travels is where you can get your fix if you enjoy a craft beer or traveling. Cheers! Show notes from Host John Holl:I met Jeff Alworth in the comments section of his blog, Beervana. A decade ago I had written an article for a newspaper and Alworth had thoughts and took the piece to task. He was wrong, of course, so like any keyboard warrior, I logged on and defended my digital honor. We became friends shortly after. If you are interested in beer, you likely know Alworth. He's internationally respected writer and authority on beer. He has a deep respect for beer styles, history, tradition, and craftsmanship. The first addition of the beer bible has sold over 125,000 copies and the second edition, according to workman, the publisher is “the most comprehensive guide to the world of beer, with everything you need to know about what to drink, where, when and why.” Alworth is author of the Beervana Blog, the The Widmer Way (Ooligan), The Secrets of Master Brewers (Storey), and Cider Made Simple. He is co-host of the Beervana Podcast. Alworth hails from Portland, Oregon and as he began national book tour to support the new book he spent a few days in New Jersey, staying at my house. You should check out the podcasts he did with Steal This Beer as well as Beer Massif at two book signings for additional context. With this go around, recorded in my backyard- neighbor's leaf blowers and all – I tried to cover new ground, but mostly just wound up having an enjoyable chat with an old friend." This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is all about lagers! On the show, Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible, and Jack Hendler, the co-owner of Jack's Abby Craft Lagers in Framingham, Massachusetts, talk about everything from the brewing process to the history and future of craft lagers. Jimmy kicks us off by asking Jack why he chose to brew lagers. Jack dives into the real lack of lagers on the American craft beer market today. Jeff explains how a rise in Hazy IPAs among other things necessitated a refresh of The Beer Bible. He also dives into the process of decoction and how a single vs. triple decoction beer might differ. Jack and Jeff both launch into a discussion of Hoppy Lagers, including those brewed at Jack's Abby Craft Lagers and those written about in The Beer Bible. Jimmy notes the Craft malt conference in Portland, ME, on February 18th and 19th. Then, the gang discussed how locally grown barley is shifting the malt scene. After the break, Jack shares 200+ year old breweries in Germany are starting to create IPAs inspired by American craft beer. Jeff encourages the beer connoisseurs of the world to travel to England, Germany, and more surprisingly Lithuania. Jeff chronicles his journey from university research all the way to receiving his (self-proclaimed) Ph.D. in beer. Jeff asks Jack if he has a cold IPA, and Jack asks Jeff his view on the future of Lagers. Jack and Jeff finish off the episode admiring the joys of enjoying a lager in a pub. You will hear how despite any judgements or false assumptions from others in the Christian sphere regarding alcohol and ministry, they've been able to create a space of trust, vulnerability, and an openness to investigate scripture and the person of Jesus - often for the first time.
