My guest today teaches happiness for a living. Which is ironic, because she grew up in a country where smiling at a stranger means something is wrong with you. Tatiana Koval spent 15 years as an HR consultant in Russia. When the war in Ukraine started, saying you were against it could put you in jail. Within days, she left the country with her husband and two sons to emigrate to Brazil. This is a conversation about happiness at work, life in Russia, and moving to Brazil, a place where strangers smile, hug, and say good morning in the elevator. ******** Listen on your favorite podcast app using pod.link.     . On March 1, Tatiana and her family were gone. A new law had made it a crime to speak against the war. Most of her clients had government connections, so she lost them. Colleagues cut ties because being associated with her had become dangerous for their businesses. They chose Brazil because of a Facebook post saying Russians could move there and get citizenship. Money matters, she says, “but to stay human for me was much more important.” The Slavic Face In Russia it’s not the norm to smile. If you want respect, you wear a serious face. Tatiana calls it the “Slavic face.” Russians grow up expecting crisis, always ready for something bad to happen. She calls that mindset the opposite of happiness. Looking back at her school and university years, she realizes she fought depression, but she never saw a psychologist. The stigma was too strong. Tatiana holds three university diplomas: mathematics, economics, and communication. None in psychology. Then about 15 years ago she joined a US-based online conference where people were talking about happiness at work. Nobody had ever told her that work could be a path to happiness. She calls it her “wow moment.” She dove into positive psychology, taking courses on Coursera and reading Martin Seligman and Tal Ben-Shahar. What hooked her was Seligman’s famous question: if everything is okay with our lives, could we make them better? Bom Dia in the Elevator In her building in Brazil, neighbors say bom dia in the elevator every day. People smile, hug, and complain plenty too. Community runs deep, in church, in family, at work. In Moscow she lived in the same building for over 15 years and knew two or three of her neighbors. But she pushes back on the idea that everything in Brazil is better. Social trust, she says, is about the same as Russia. She couldn’t go out after dark in her old Russian neighborhood, and she wouldn’t recommend it in most Brazilian cities either. How She Learned to Love Cleaning the House Tatiana uses a method from positive psychology called job crafting: redefining how you see a task. She hated cleaning her house. So she turned it into her hour for podcasts, dancing, and exercise. Now she refuses to let anyone else do it. Understanding Your Why Work becomes a path to happiness when you find the meaning in it. In Tatiana’s projects, one of the most common results is that people finally understand what the company is doing, why, and for whom. In her own business, the goal is not just to make money but to understand what the other person needs and find the true solution. If a solution isn’t right for a client, she says no and points them to someone else. Happiness Is a Skill Tatiana says the tools of positive psychology helped her recover from emigration faster. She had stress, losses, and plenty of negative emotions. But her recovery came much quicker than it would have without the science of happiness. During that period she asked herself every day if she was happy. The answer was yes, because the decision to leave was built on her values. Bring Your Product Ideas to Life

Have you ever had an idea for a product but had no idea what to do next? Many product business owners start with a concept, a sketch, or even just a feeling of something they'd like to create. But turning that idea into a finished product that people can actually buy involves far more than most people realise. In this episode, I'm joined by product designer and consultant Natalya Koval, founder of Ginger Quikki Studio. Natalya works with founders and established brands to help bring product ideas to life, from the earliest stages of design right through to manufacturing and production. We talk about what really happens behind the scenes when developing a product, the common mistakes founders make, and why bringing a product to market is often a much longer and more emotional journey than people expect.Natalya shares practical insights into product design, manufacturing, sampling, factory relationships and customer feedback. She also explains why simplicity is often the key to great design, and why getting the foundations right can save a huge amount of time, money and frustration later on.If you've ever wondered how to turn a product idea into something people can buy, this episode offers a realistic and honest look at what's involved. In this episode we discuss:• How product ideas evolve from an initial concept into a finished product• Why understanding your customer is essential before you start designing• The importance of balancing creativity, functionality and budget• Common mistakes founders make during the product development process• Why sampling and product development take longer than most people expect• How to choose the right manufacturer for your product• The role of factories, pattern makers and production partners• Why quality control is such an important part of the process• How customer feedback can improve your product before launch• The hidden costs that many founders overlook• Why product development can be an emotional journey• How to avoid costly mistakes when working with manufacturers• What happens when products don't succeed commercially• Practical advice for anyone developing their first productOne of the things I found particularly interesting about this conversation was Natalya's honesty about the realities of product development. We often see the finished product, but rarely hear about the years of work, testing, revisions and problem solving that happen behind the scenes.Whether you're developing your first product or looking to improve an existing one, there are plenty of practical insights in this episode that will help you approach the process with more confidence.Connect with Nataylawww.gingerkoiki.comInstagramNatalya Koval | LinkedInhttps://gingerkoiki.scoreapp.comLET'S CONNECTFollow me on YouTubeFind me on InstagramWork with me Buy My Book: Bring Your Product Idea To LifeIf you enjoy this podcast, and you'd like to leave a tip, you can do so here: https://bring-your-product-idea.captivate.fm/support

This is the final part in our series. This time we talk about different grains. Not the normal mash bill for sure. Hope you enjoy.Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==While whiskey is traditionally made from the "big four" grains—barley, corn, rye, and wheat—distillers are increasingly using alternative grains to introduce unique flavors, textures, and aromas. These non-traditional grains allow craft distillers to differentiate their products and push the boundaries of classic whiskey profiles.Common Alternate Grains and Their EffectsDistillers choose specific alternative grains primarily for their impact on the final spirit's flavor profile and mouthfeel.Oats: Used to create an exceptionally creamy, oily texture and a dense mouthfeel. They add a mellow, oatmeal-like sweetness and are often used as a "balancer" to smooth out harsher grains like rye.Millet: Known for providing a gentle sweetness with distinct nutty and anise-like (licorice) undertones. It is historically used in African brewing and is prized by some for producing a smoother spirit than corn.Quinoa: Imparts a bold, nutty, and earthy character. Though challenging to work with due to its small size and bitter coating, it is highly expressive; even a small percentage in a mash bill can significantly alter the taste.Sorghum: Offers a rich, earthy depth with smoky or maple-like notes. It is versatile, as the plant can produce syrup for rum-style spirits and grain for whiskey-style spirits.Rice (Brown Rice): Adds a toasty, nutty flavor and an oily texture. Some distillers note a unique "sweet potato" aroma that pairs well with the vanilla notes from oak aging.Buckwheat: Technically a "pseudo-grain," it lends a distinctly earthy, floral, and nutty body, sometimes reminiscent of roasted pistachios or hazelnuts.Triticale: A human-made hybrid of wheat and rye. It is used to achieve the spiciness of rye but with the soft, sweet finish of wheat.Distilleries Using Alternative GrainsKoval Distillery (Chicago, IL): A pioneer in the space, Koval offers a 100% Millet Whiskey known for its clean, nutty, and floral profile. They also produce an Oat Whiskey and a "Four Grain" expression that blends oats with malted barley, rye, and wheat.Corsair Distillery (Nashville, TN): Known for experimental "alt-grain" releases, Corsair produces a Quinoa Whiskey (80% malted barley, 20% quinoa) which adds distinct earthy and nutty notes. Their "Grainiac" 9-grain bourbon includes corn, barley, rye, wheat, oats, quinoa, triticale, spelt, and buckwheat.High West Distillery (Park City, UT): Produces Valley Tan, a whiskey inspired by Mormon pioneer recipes that blends wheat and oats.High Wire Distilling Co. (Charleston, SC): Known for their "Southern Revival" series, they produce a 100% Sorghum Whiskey using grain grown in Tennessee, offering a profile that some compare to Scotch.Alchemy Distillery (Arcata, CA): They recently released a Bottled-in-Bond Quinoa Whiskey made from grain grown just miles from the distillery.Pine Bluffs Distilling (Pine Bluffs, WY): Offers an Oat Whiskey with a mash bill featuring 36% oats, noted for its smooth texture and vanilla-honey notes.Dakota Spirits Distillery (Pierre, SD): Produces 1804 Oat Whiskey, highlighting the grain's smooth, drinkable quality.Cathead Distillery (Jackson, MS): Debuted a Sorghum Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey in 2025, using the actual sorghum grain rather than just the syrup.Whiskey Del Bac (Tucson, AZ – popular in the region): Though known for Mesquite-smoked barley, they frequently experiment with regional heritage grains.Hinterhaus Distilling (Arnold, CA – frequently discussed in regional whiskey circles): Often explores unique mash bills that depart from the standard four grains.

Please do that Chicago doesn't get enough credit for shaping American spirits, so we're heading straight into Koval Distillery, a modern craft producer that helped bring distilling back to the city in 2008. John Ritt joins me as we break down Koval's origin story: two PhDs leaving established careers, betting on whiskey, and building a grain to bottle operation focused on consistency, creativity, and ingredient driven flavor. Koval also leans into a rare stance for American whiskey: certified organic and kosher production, plus mash bills that refuse to play it safe.  Then we taste. We crack into a Koval sampling pack and work through Four Grain, Rye, Bourbon, and Wheat Whiskey with real time notes and plenty of debate. The Four Grain is the shocker. With no corn and a mix of oat, malted barley, rye, and wheat, it lands like confectioners sugar and banana bread in a Glencairn, sweet without feeling syrupy. The rye brings grassy aromas and a pepper flake finish, the bourbon shows a bolder bite that makes us think “Old Fashioned ready,” and the wheat whiskey drinks big and toasty at higher proof.  We finish by choosing a winner for our Old Louisville Whiskey Company barrel bottle breakdown and talk about why Koval works best when you stop comparing it to Kentucky and start appreciating regional American whiskey on its own terms. We also get into cocktail potential, a quick hack for blending bourbon and rye, and why 375ml bottles might be the most practical move for collectors who actually want to drink what they buy. In a special Contacts Coaching podcast episode, Stevenson alumna Danielle Koval—Director of Compliance for Financial Aid and revenue sharing at the University of Oklahoma—shares her path from being a swimmer and water polo player at Stevenson to swimming at Fresno State, working in student-athlete academic services, moving to UNLV, and then joining OU after taking a financial aid role just before COVID. She compares working environments across Fresno State, UNLV, and a Power Four brand like Oklahoma, emphasizing the scale of budgets, the weight of a global brand, and the constant pace of compliance changes driven by lawsuits and reactive policy shifts. The conversation explains how college athletics finances work, why most sports operate at a loss, and how football revenue and attendance underwrite broader departmental resources. Koval details how athletic scholarships and financial aid function across headcount and equivalency sports, why FAFSA and campus/college-level scholarships matter, and how tuition waivers and programs like the Western Undergraduate Exchange reduce costs. She breaks down the shift from NCAA scholarship limits to roster caps under the new landscape, including how schools decide whether to fully fund expanded rosters and how new scholarships can count against the revenue-sharing cap. The episode also covers OU's revenue-sharing approach (six sports), Title IX defensibility pressures, preferred walk-on dynamics under roster caps, the increased role of agents in everyday issues, and how contracts are renegotiated annually amid early signing day and the transfer portal. Koval discusses the challenges of paying athletes while preparing them for life after sports, including OU's financial literacy programming, and closes with a personal reflection on changing her mindset from perfectionism to giving herself grace as circumstances shift.00:00 Welcome & Meet Danielle Koval (OU Compliance + Financial Aid/Rev Share)00:33 Danielle's Athlete-to-Administrator Journey: Fresno State → UNLV → Oklahoma05:31 Leveling Up: What Changes from Mid-Major to Power Program?08:34 The OU Brand & Culture of Excellence Across Sports11:23 Money Talks: Football Revenue, Facilities, and Funding Other Sports12:51 Is College Athletics Sustainable? The Broker Tech Gap: Why the Middle of the Insurance Value Chain Gets Left Behind

The Insurtech Leadership Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2025 33:52

Introduction Carriers have core systems. Agents have CRMs. The broker sitting in the middle - managing corporate clients, chasing carrier proposals, and copy-pasting PDFs for twelve hours to build a single comparison - largely runs on email and Excel. Robert Koval has spent fifteen years building the platform that fixes that. Koval is the COO of TeamBase, an insurtech founded in Dubai and now operating across the Middle East, Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Europe, with the US market in its sights. TeamBase built two products from a single insight: that the broker's workflow - from customer portal to carrier comparison - is the most technologically underserved segment in the insurance value chain. In this conversation, Josh Hollander and Koval dig into how AI is collapsing the carrier proposal comparison from twelve hours to minutes, why going local beats going global in emerging insurance markets, and what the hardest leadership lesson is when you scale from two people to ten. Guest Bio Robert Koval is the COO of TeamBase, an insurtech platform serving brokers, carriers, and MGAs across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. TeamBase was founded fifteen years ago in Dubai and operates two core products: BenefitNet, a policy management and customer self-service portal, and Quick Quote Hub, a quotation and carrier comparison platform. Koval runs product, operations, and AI strategy across a fully distributed team spanning India, Pakistan, Argentina, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Romania, and Ireland, with expansion into the US underway. Key Topics The broker is the most underserved link in the chain - Carriers have invested heavily in their own systems. Agencies have CRMs. The broker serving corporate clients is still emailing PDFs, building comparisons by hand, and managing policy additions through spreadsheets. That's the gap TeamBase was built to close. Twelve hours of copy-paste, automated in minutes - When a broker asks multiple carriers to quote a corporate client, the resulting comparison process - opening four to six PDFs, extracting data, creating apples-to-apples tables - routinely takes twelve hours per proposal. TeamBase's AI ingests those proposals and produces the comparison automatically, freeing brokers to spend time on advice rather than data entry. Local beats global in emerging markets - TeamBase made a deliberate choice not to build one globally standardized platform. Instead they fork and localize - building market-specific versions that can respond to local regulatory changes without touching the core. The trade-off is more maintenance, but clients in markets where regulations shift quickly respond far better to a locally adapted product. AI is the next evolution, not a revolution - Koval frames AI as a continuation of the efficiency gains the industry has always chased. A platform refresh that would have required triple the code fifteen years ago is now achievable in a fraction of the time. For TeamBase, the immediate AI applications are in submission ingestion, carrier comparison automation, and QA testing - concrete ROI, not experiments. Two developers and a great AI tool beats ten developers - Koval's view on team structure is blunt: AI changes the headcount math. The same output that required ten engineers now requires two with the right tools. That's not a threat to the team - it's a reallocation toward domain expertise and customer relationships. Work on the business, not in it - Asked for one piece of advice to his fifteen-years-ago self, Koval lands on delegation. The transition from hands-on tech founder to trusting the first few people to carry real responsibility took longer than it should have, and cost focus and energy in the process. Going from two people to ten was the hardest stretch. Notable Quotes "The broker is the segment in the overall value chain that tends to be, from a technology point of view, underserved the most." "Copy-pasting from proposals - it's such a mind-numbing task. And it can be automated. If you suddenly free up their hands, they can actually spend time building the relationship with the client." "If I want to build a product and I have a choice of hiring ten developers or two developers and a great AI tool - I'm definitely going to choose the second one." "Going to a one-size-fits-all global platform, you end up with something quite mediocre that works around the world but doesn't excel anywhere." "Work on the business, not in it. I would ask myself to let things go much quicker than I did."
