Back in the day, streaming "Trek" tried a fun little experiment that actually worked out pretty well! So of course they only did it twice. This week we're looking at the first four "Short Treks", bite-sized bits that go a bit outside the usual realms of the show. This time around we've got a stowaway, two different kinds of rescue, and a rascally con-man! Also this week: kids shows, cartoons, and title cards! [Timestamps: Runaway: 04:01; Calypso: 21:49; The Brightest Star: 38:31; The Escape Artist: 56:50; The Blog: 1:06:14] [Intros: https://sshbpodcast.tumblr.com/post/777202555238449152/short-intros-for-short-treks ] NOTE: we get into some, we'll say, "heavy foreshadowing" for S.2 of "Discovery" in our discussion of "Calypso". We never go full spoiler but if you really want to go into it TOTALLY clean, maybe skip that one.
Bill Oakley, a writer and producer for shows like The Simpsons, discusses his unexpected career shift into becoming a food influencer and reviewer. He recounts his childhood fascination with fast food, which led to a lifelong fascination with the latest offerings at the drive-thru and grocery store. Mike and Bill discuss trends in the fast-food industry, Bill's shift towards reviewing a broader range of American foods and packaged goods, and his excitement for innovative condiments. They also talk about Bill's move into hosting ticketed dinners featuring regional cuisine, and how he beat Disney to the punch in trademarking the name "Steamed Hams" (his membership club is the Steamed Ham Society), a long-time Internet meme that originated from a script he wrote for the Simpsons. Former Simpsons showrunner Bill Oakley joins to tell Chris, Richard, and Hillary all about working on the show during its golden age, how he came up with the endlessly memed "Steamed Hams" sketch, and why the show did a throwaway joke about Donald Trump being elected president.
This episode of The Say Report starts with us getting political so if you're not interested in that skip ahead to the 23 minute mark where you'll be greeted with a small recap of what we did during our Say Report Summer Vacation before we share our “Say-mmer Jamz” Playlist for 2024.
Bill Oakley, along with his best friend and writing partner Josh Weinstein, wrote various episodes of The Simpsons during it's glory days including “Marge Gets A Job”, “Bart vs Australia”, and the legendary 2-part season-straddling “Who Shot Mr Burns”, and they were appointed executive producers and showrunners for the 7th and 8th seasons of the show, where they continued to push the envelope of what the show could be, bowing out while the show was still on a high. One of Bill's greatest claims to fame is having written the “Steamed Hams” scene from the 1996 episode “22 Short Films About Springfield”. The scene has taken on a life of its own with various memes and recontextualizing videos springing up on the internet. Bill and Josh also created the short lived Mission Hill, and were consulting producers on Futurama. Bill has also worked on shows like Portlandia and The Cleveland Show. In 2018 Bill started to produce short Instagram videos of himself reviewing fast food items from American outlets. These videos have become a serious concern for Oakley, and he created the annual Steamie Awards, in reference to the steamed hams sketch of course. If you're a big Simpsons fan I hope you get something out of this, but if you're more of a casual viewer I hope you'll find it interesting to learn how a show like this gets made. When you think of a classic diner, what comes to mind: A counter? Cozy booths? Never-ending coffee refills? This month Eater Portland wrestled with this very concept of what even constitutes a Portland diner in a city that's had more diner closures this past few years than ever before. So today on the show, host Claudia Meza talks with Brooke Jackson-Glidden, editor of Eater Portland (and recent James Beard award-winner), about her picks for that true diner experience. Diners mentioned on the show: Stepping Stone Cafe Nite Hawk Slim's My Father's Place Banning's Fuller's Coffee Shop Cameo Café East This has nothing to do with diners, but c'mon: Steamed Hams by Bill Oakley Who would you like to hear on City Cast Portland? We didn't forget about you! This episode, Steve has been playing Kangdom Hearts II and gushes (heh) over Dishonored. Halo Infinite is coming (heh) up, and boy howdy, Brian is not too excited. Steve makes the argument that open worlds are not a good thing for gaming, and they boys try to crack why every character has to have 7 crossover games. Finally, Weird Dreams returns! In the first of two episodes going back to the 80's, the team tackles The Goonies: Never Say Die. As Goonmaster, Reverend D guided the team through the first scenario of the game, giving Couch James a much needed break from running a game. Did our team win? And were they successful in finding One Eyed Willy's treasure? D also gives a brief update on his adventures at SNAFU con and an intriguing game involving flipping a table.Quick warning: while this episode is mark explicit, it is due to the repeated use of the term for anatomy in discussion of a famous scene/prop from the Goonies movie. You have been warned.

On this week's episode, we discuss all things 22 Short Films About Springfield! This is an episode that truly needs no introduction. We get iconic scenes such as "Steamed Hams", Apu in the Jolly Bengali, and the Pulp Fiction rip-offs. We absolutely love this episode, and had a great time putting this one together for you guys. Thanks to everyone who wrote in, and please get your questions in for next weeks episode, The Flying Hellfish!![Synopsis at 10:15]
How do we even talk about this episode in 2021? Does it have the craziest crossover yet? And, most importantly, did it sweep the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards? We cast our votes for these questions and more as we watch Season 8, Episode 8 of Family Matters. Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577

This episode we reverse the absence with Logan missing and David back but it works out cause he does an okay Garashir impression. We only read a small amount of fanfic this time, capping off with another DS9 fanfic about Garashir but involving babies, Sonic in 50 shades of pfffttfbffbfbf, and Cowboy Bebop but it's not actually Cowboy Bebop. After that we get to some Naked Opinions questions cause it's been quite a while and I can assure you the side show isn't dead, it'll come back eventually just like my sexlife hopefully. Welcome! It's episode 67 of the "What's Real?" podcast with Ed, Jared, and Cam. This week, the opening segment is a "variety half-hour" as opposed to the usual longer version. This covers the recent verdict that rocked the country, a breakdown of the recent WWE talent purge, MLW to air on Vice TV, Kobe Bryant estate and Nike part ways, the classic Simpsons episode segment "Steamed Hams", the 2021 NBA Hall of Fame, and some brief Steelers news. Next up on the show is a review of the first episode of WWE on A&E Biography: "Stone Cold Steve Austin". Then the guys take their first trip of many, in the coming weeks, to the drive-in. It's episodes 1 & 2 of season 3 of "The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs". This week's initial mystery films are "Mother's Day" and "The House By the Cemetery". This includes a special guest of this week's drive-in, director Eli Roth! The most explosive segment in weekly podcasting is up next. It's "Thursday Night Prime" as Charles Bronson returns in "Death Wish 5: Face of Death". As per the norm, the show concludes with hilarity and "Goofs R' Goofs". In this episode we discuss an all time classic, almost INFAMOUS episode. We break down each short film, gush over the "Steamed Hams" scene which has taken on a life of its own, and discuss how the episode was produced and written. CARDS ON THE TABLE - Andy's internet connection was NOT secure, so there are a few "technical difficulties", culminating in Andy fully losing it towards the end. Bit more of a longer ramble than usual, but a fun one all the same. Enjoy! Skip to 27.55 for Simpsons chat.

No. Does it matter that she watched the wrong episode and was ready to talk about the mystery of the death of Asa Phelps over the fact that Steamed Hams is more of an Albany expression? No! When we come back after long breaks we come back strong and nothing matters except making sure the world knows just how bad a service provider Cincinnati Bell is. You hear that Cincinnati Bell? You're on our Poo Poo Platter of the Week!
