The Church: A Community of Spirit-Filled Followers of Jesus (Ephesians 2:17–22) - Dr. Bill Cook
Message from Jarrett Stephens on April 13, 2025
Every Day with Jesus - Ephesians 3.14-21 Jobey McGinty No “one way” relationship can survive, much less thrive. With Christ, if we are only “breathing in” our own thoughts, worries, or desires, we will always be one-sided, because we will only then be “breathing out” our thoughts, fears, and worries. A two-way relationship with Christ requires prayer, and while any genuine prayer is good, when we learn to respond to His Word in prayer our hearts become more aligned with Him, and like fuel (our prayers) being added to the fire (God's Word), our prayers and back and forth relationship become explosive.
Pastor of Congregational Care & Missions Jason Dunn concludes our sermon series on the definition of a disciple: one who is united to Jesus, in communion with God, in community with others, and commissioned for the world. Pastor Jason focuses on the final piece: the commission. Using the story of a tragic bridge collapse in 1907 and the subsequent creation of the "Order of the Ring" for engineers, he explores how our work, whether as engineers, artists, parents, or cashiers, is deeply meaningful and meant to glorify God. Just as engineers are reminded to pursue excellence for the public good, disciples of Jesus are called to see their work as sacred and impactful, contributing to human flourishing.Drawing from Ephesians 2:10, John 17:4, and 1 Corinthians 15:58, Pastor Jason unpacks the plan, purpose, and power of our commission as disciples. Our work is not merely about financial gain but about reflecting God's character, pushing back darkness, and participating in His mission for the world. Through both our work and witness, we are invited into a co-mission with God—whether through intentional evangelism or simply embodying the gospel in our daily lives. Ultimately, it is through God's power, not our own, that our labor is never in vain. Join us as we reflect on how to live as disciples who integrate work and witness for God's glory.
“But that is not the way you learned Christ! — assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus…” Ephesians 4:20-21

WHAT WE HAVE IN JESUS (EPHESIANS 1:4-14) The verses that we are going to review today are about you. This is your life. Here, the Lord is just giving your biography: from grace to glory; from eternity past to eternity future. Now, if you're not interested in what you have in the Lord Jesus, and you're not interested in your own personal spiritual welfare, then what on earth would you be interested in? What on earth could you be interested in? Did you know that God chose you, that God purposed your salvation, before He laid the foundations of the earth? Now, you want to talk about some old-time religion, well you can't get any older than this. I mean, this was before there were any trees and mountains and birds and bees and fleas. Now, that's before there was anything. God, way back in eternity past, chose you, and God chose me. You know, when we were kids playing football, or basketball, we would choose teams from among the group of kids. And there is always somebody who wonders if he is going to be chosen at all. Now, isn't it wonderful to know that God chose us so far back? You see, God is love, and what good is it to be a God of love if there's no one to love? Love, by its very nature, cannot dwell by itself. And so, since God's nature is love, God created people like us, and chose us, that He might love us. Listen, God does not love us because we are valuable, we are valuable because God loves us. You are somebody because God chose you by His grace. And by His sovereign will, God chose to bestow His love upon you. I like what Charles Haddon Spurgeon had to say about it. He said this: “God certainly must have chosen me before I came into this world, or He never would have chosen me afterward.” Now, isn't it wonderful to know that even before we got here God looked down and said, “I see who he's going to be, and I choose him”? Most importantly, that means I can't take any credit for my salvation. Because, it wasn't, primarily, that I chose God. He chose me first. I love Him because He first loved me. Pastor Michael Barrett
(Mandarin) Lianbo Zhang - Narwee Baptist Church
In Pastor Mike's sermon focused on how reverence for Jesus transforms various aspects of life, emphasizing relationships, marriage, family dynamics, and work ethics. It challenged listeners to evaluate their actions through the lens of their devotion to Christ, suggesting that such reverence should guide interactions with spouses, children, and colleagues alike. The message underscored the importance of sacrificial love, mutual respect, and obedience as reflections of one's reverence for Jesus in everyday life.

What does it look like to be transformed by the gospel? We can't make ourselves new, or shine our light. As humans, we become more like what we are around. If we set our minds on things from our old nature, we become calloused and more like that. When we stand in awe of what he has done and who he is we become more like him. This Sunday, our message, from Ephesians 6:5-9, was called “Working for King Jesus.” Ever since the garden of Eden, work has been difficult. Adam's sin led to a broken world and a broken creation. The penalty for his sin fell upon our work. Genesis 3:19 reads “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground…” As the Ray LaMontagne song, Trouble, goes: “Trouble, Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble. Trouble been doggin' my soul since the day I was born. Worry, Worry, worry, worry, worry. Worry just will not seem to leave my mind alone.” In the gospel, Jesus has come to introduce his new kingdom. Ephesians announces that the grand plan of God is to reconcile everything in heaven and on earth to himself in Christ (Ephesians 1:10). The Church is the new redeemed people where that reality of Christ's eternal reign begins to break through into our lives where we live every day. It is in our lives as disciples of Jesus that the curse begins to be reversed. Work becomes a place of worship, of growth, of freedom. This Sunday, we are going to look at how knowing that you are working not for “the man” but for the “God-man”, King Jesus, can free your heart and soul and transform your work-life whether you are an employee, an employer, a student, or a stay-at-home parent. Christ's reign in your heart and in your life can begin to transform your workspace for the glory of God. Come this Sunday as we listen to the difference it makes when we recognize that we are working for a good King, King Jesus. We are praying that this passage might help all of us see how God can take hard work places and make them glorious heart work spaces where we are changed and our world begins to change. Looking forward to worshiping Jesus with you on Sunday. Praying for you! In Christ, Kevin Dibbley, Senior Pastor
Formation in the way of Jesus must be stronger than the formation of the world. This is what Ephesians 5:11-21 is all about. Each one of us are either being formed into the way of Jesus or we are being deformed into the way of the world. There is no middle ground. In this teaching we explore what it looks like to be formed in the way of Jesus.
Love Your Neighbor, 2 of 7, April 7th, 2024 “We love our neighbors with confidence when Jesus makes us God's children.” 1 John 2:28-3:3 by Michael Lockstampfor (@miklocks) REFLECTION & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
God has promised to never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). But that's God's end of the bargain, right? What if you walk away from God? Many Christians worry about this perceived possibility. If you're the new self with a new heart, then you're a “slave of righteousness” (Romans 6:18). You have an undying love for Jesus (Ephesians 6:24), and you'll never want to walk away from God. Even if you thought you could, God goes with you wherever you might go, because Christ lives in you forever (Romans 8:38-39).

This Sunday's message was called “Learning Jesus.” It is taken from Ephesians 4:17-24 where the apostle Paul is encouraging the Christians at Ephesus to “no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.” The Ephesian Christians were once Gentiles walking in “the futility of their minds.” Futility really describes that downward spiral that the unbelieving world is in towards spiritual and moral catastrophe. The individual believes that he or she is completely fine and in control. They think that they know the way to life, to joy, to peace. In aviation, there is an error called a “graveyard spiral”. It happens when the pilot thinks he is flying with his wings level, but he or she is actually flying in a wide downward circle. Their altimeter and vertical speed indicator tell them that they are getting lower so they simply pull back on their control yoke. They grab the controls. What that does is actually tighten the circle of their descent towards a crash. It's like water going down the drain. Sin does that. It leads us in an ever rapidly descent towards death and calamity. Our tendency sometimes is to grab the controls back from the Lord. This isn't what we expected to happen and so we try to fix things in the flesh. The truth is that there is only one way out. It isn't grabbing the controls back. It is giving up our control to Christ. It is looking to the One who alone leads us out of death and into life. One of the spiritual disciplines of the Christian is learning how to fix our eyes on Jesus who can lead us out of sin and death and towards that eternal rest for which our souls long. Do you feel like you are in a downward spiral in your personal life? Are you moving away from Christ? Are you seeing or sensing that you need to grab the control yoke and fix this yourself? Have you been handling difficulties in the flesh? Lets study this passage and understand what Paul means when he talks about Christians having “learned Jesus.” Even as Christians, especially as Christians, we need to understand the wisdom and the way of “Learning Jesus.” This is absolutely vital so pray that we might learn and live God's wisdom together. See you Sunday. Oh, by the way, the snow is beautiful. In Christ, Kevin Dibbley, Senior Pastor

Since 1961, families and friends had been separated by the Berlin Wall. Erected that year by the East German government, the barrier kept its citizens from fleeing to West Germany. In fact, from 1949 to the day the structure was built, it’s estimated that more than 2.5 million East Germans had bolted to the West. US President Ronald Reagan stood at the wall in 1987 and famously said, “Tear down this wall.” His words reflected a groundswell of change in the region that culminated with the wall being torn down in 1989—leading to Germany’s joyous reunification. Paul wrote of a “wall of hostility” torn down by Jesus (Ephesians 2:14). The wall had existed between Jews (God’s chosen people) and gentiles (all other people). And it was symbolized by the dividing wall (the soreg) in the ancient temple erected by Herod the Great in Jerusalem. It kept gentiles from entering beyond the outer courts of the temple, though they could see the inner courts. But Jesus brought “peace” and reconciliation between the Jews and gentiles and between God and all people. He did so by “[breaking] down the wall . . . that separated us” by “his death on the cross” (vv. 14, 16 nlt). The “Good News of peace” made it possible for all to be united by faith in Christ (vv. 17–18 nlt). Today, there are many things that can divide us. As God provides what we need, let’s strive to live out and declare the peace and unity found in Jesus (vv. 19–22).
Sermon Notes Sex was created by God to be a bonding experience so powerful that two separate things could become one through this moment. Genesis 2:24 NIV That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. – God Mark 10:8-9 NIV "and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." – Jesus Ephesians 5:31 NIV "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." – Apostle Paul Sex is beautifully designed by God to foster oneness in marriage. 1 Corinthians 6:16 NIV Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." "Kathy and I were virgins when we married. Even in our day, that may have been the minority experience, but that meant that on our wedding night we were not in any position to try to impress or entice one another. All we were trying to do was to tenderly express with our bodies the oneness we had first begun feeling as friends and which had then had grown stronger and deeper as we fell in love. Frankly, that night I was clumsy and awkward and fell asleep anxious and discouraged. Sex was frustrating at first. It was the frustration of an artist who has in his head a picture or a story but lacks the skills to express it." – Timothy and Kathy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage In Song of Solomon: The wife speaks first, the wife speaks last, and the wife speaks most, EXCEPT when it comes to the moment when they make love. Song of Songs 4:1 NIV How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves. Your hair is like a flock of goats descending from the hills of Gilead. Song of Songs 4:2 NIV Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn, coming up from the washing. Each has its twin; not one of them is alone. Song of Songs 4:3 NIV Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon; your mouth is lovely. Your temples behind your veil are like the halves of a pomegranate. Song of Songs 4:4 NIV Your neck is like the tower of David, built with courses of stone; on it hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors. Song of Songs 4:5 NIV Your breasts are like two fawns, like twin fawns of a gazelle that browse among the lilies. Song of Songs 4:6 NIV Until the day breaks and the shadows flee, I will go to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of incense. Song of Songs 4:7 NIV You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you. Song of Songs 4:9 NIV You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. Song of Songs 4:10 NIV How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice! Song of Songs 4:11 NIV Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride; milk and honey are under your tongue. The fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon. Song of Songs 4:12 NIV You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain. Song of Songs 4:13-14 NIV Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits, with henna and nard, nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with every kind of incense tree, with myrrh and aloes and all the finest spices. Song of Songs 4:15 NIV You are a garden fountain, a well of flowing water streaming down from Lebanon. Song of Songs 4:16 NIV Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits. Both the groom and the bride are giving the other what they desire in this moment. "With sex, we were trying to be vulnerable to each other, to give each other the gift of bare-faced rejoicing in one another, and to know the pleasure of giving one another pleasure. And as the weeks went by, and then the years, we did it better and better. Yes, it means making love sometimes when one or even both of you are not "in the mood." But sex in a marriage, done to give joy rather than to impress, can change your mood on the spot. The best sex makes you want to weep tears of joy, not bask in the glow of a good performance." - Timothy and Kathy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage Song of Songs 5:1a NIV I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk. Song of Songs 5:1b NIV Eat, friends, and drink; drink your fill of love. Are you being a selfless lover to your spouse in your marriage? If not, why? Is there any area where you need to ask God to heal your heart, soul, mind, or body related to sex? Is there any change you sense God is telling you to make in your approach to sex? Ask Him for the courage to do that.

Have you ever visited a bulk food store for groceries? More and more of these environmentally-conscious shops are popping up as a way to help reduce waste and save money. There are lots of items you can buy in bulk from big bins and dispensers, instead of buying these same items in small, disposable packages. In many cases, when people go to a bulk food store they bring their own glass jars or other reusable containers so they can get exactly how much they need and no more..The other advantage of these kinds of shops? They also make grocery shopping really beautiful. Rows of big bins full of rice, beans, and pasta. Colorful crates overflowing with fruits and veggies. Walls lined with dispensers filled with golden honey, crunchy cereals, and dried fruit. Shelves with dispensers of things you can't eat but still need—like liquid shampoo and dish soap. And finally, a cart full of glass jars as colorful as the store..Whenever I go bulk shopping, I'm reminded of 2 Corinthians 4. In this Bible passage, Christians are compared to jars. Like a jar, none of us are complete unlesswe're filled. On our own, we're empty. We don't love God and others, and we're not able to save ourselves from sin and its consequences (Matthew 22:36-40; Romans 3:23-24; 6:23). For us to be complete, we need Jesus to fill us. Jesus is the only One who can save us from sin and death, and there's nothing we can do on our own to fill ourselves with His love and salvation. It's a free gift..So, whenever I look at the jars I buy at a bulk store, I can see all the good things they've been filled with, and I remember all the ways Jesus has filled us with His goodness and love by the power of the Holy Spirit. • Kandi Zeller.• Read 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 and John 8:12. Even though we are “like fragile clay jars” (2 Corinthians 4:7), as Christians, how can it be comforting to know that Jesus is at work in us? .• When we put our trust in Jesus, He fills us with His goodness. We couldn't do anything to earn the free gift of His love and salvation—that's why He died and rose again so that we could be rescued from sin and death. His Holy Spirit lives in Christians, guaranteeing we will live forever with Jesus (Ephesians 1:14). According to 1 Timothy 1:14, what are some of the ways God fills us with His goodness? (If you want to dig deeper, read Romans 5:5-11 and Galatians 5:22-23.).We ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 2 Corinthians 4:7b (NLT)
What if random acts of kindness aren't really random? What if God had planned them all along? We are saved by grace through faith, it's God's gift so we can't take any credit. But God isn't finished, we are God's workmanship, God is still working on us, and He is preparing good stuff for us to do for our neighbors. God doesn't need our good works but our neighbors do. Recorded live at Word of Life Church in Le Sueur, Minnesota, on May 21, 2023, Pastor Jason Lang preaching.
High school students need to understand God's instructions about hard work. Christian slaves and masters in the first century were commanded to treat each other with great respect. We must take that same attitude to all of our work situations in the 21st century!
