I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 26th of February, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of John 19:38:”After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly,…” Folks, I have the privilege of participating in a funeral service but the lady that we are going to remember is not famous, no. She is a mother, the wife of a minister. She has brought up children and grandchildren. Yes, she's a washer of dishes, a cleaner of the house, the one that makes the beds every day. Yes, she is a band of one of the feet washers that no one ever hears about, but what a lady! If you think about it, everybody knows who C H Surgeon is. He is called the Prince of Preachers. At 21 years old they built the London Tabernacle for him that could seat 10 000 people but no one knows about the farm worker that was preaching one Sunday night in a terrible snow storm this young man was trying to seek refuge, he wasn't going to church, and he slipped into the back of the church, where the farmworker, nobody knows what his name was, was preaching the Gospel, but that young man heard one verse, “Look unto me and be saved”. His life was changed. Yes, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, but you don't know the name of that farmworker. No, he was just an ordinary person. What about Mordecai Ham? How's that for a mouthful? Mordecai Ham - do you know who Mordecai Ham was? No, of course you don't, but I want to tell you that Mordecai Ham was preaching. He was a country evangelist, and he was preaching one night and a young boy, 16 years old, came into the meeting. His whole ambition was to be a professional baseball player. He heard the word, came forward, gave his life to Christ. Yes, I'm talking about Billy Graham, probably the greatest of all modern day evangelists! Then of course we're talking about Joseph of Arimathea, a businessman. Yes, when all of the disciples fled and left Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, took his reputation and his life in his hands and asked Pontius Pilate if he could take the body of Christ off the cross. He put the body of our beloved Master in his own personal grave - Joseph of Arimathea. These are a band of feet washers. This lady I'm talking about, Marion, was the wife of the man who ran the church where my wife Jill and I got saved 46 years ago. I remember her very well, just a lovely, beautiful person. We always felt welcome in her home. She had a lot to do with our conversion and walk with Christ. She is now receiving her reward from Jesus in heaven. Don't despise the feet washers.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day, Goodbye.

In May of 1871, Charles Haddon Spurgeon contributed an article to The Sword and Trowel on the kind of ministry, and the kind of minister, needed by the churches, and how such ministers might be raised up.  Spurgeon's blend of sanctified common sense and discerning, even wry commentary on trends current in his own day will, it is hoped, stimulate thought on the sort of ministry the Scriptures encourage us to pursue and foster.   Featured Article: – 'The Ministry Needed by the Churches', C. What Are You Fishing For? Men pleasers- Ephesians 6:6 Not with eye service, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; Gold/wealth- Matthew 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Treasures-Proverbs 10:2 - Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. Lust of the flesh- Galatians 5:16 - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Earthly accolades, wealth, something of value, women, men,  Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?   34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Ecclesiastes 5:19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work--this is a gift of God.   Ephesians 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. Luke 12: 29   And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.   What's in your tackle box?  I love to fish.  If I fish in freshwater, I take a smaller rod and lighter line.  I use artificial bait that looks like a bug or edible thing to a fish that might find its way by accident into the water. In saltwater, I have to go heavier.  Anything is possible but I am not capable of anything so I have to moderate.   Jesus mission was misunderstood. Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.   Who is He fighting? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. John 18:36   The Sword:  For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." Job threw up the phrase that some people have ascribed to.  Job 34:4 Let's decide for ourselves what is right and agree among ourselves as to what is good,   That is straight up PRIDE and arrogance Charles Haddon Spurgeon  said “DEAR FRIENDS, it is never wise to dispute with God. Let a man strive with his fellow, but not with his Maker. If we must discuss any point, let it be with imperfect beings like ourselves, but not with the infallible and infinitely wise God; for, in most of our discussions, these questions wilt come back to us, "Should it be according to thy mind? Art thou master? Is everyone to be subordinate to thee?" I am going to speak, this evening, to those who have a quarrel with God concerning the way of salvation. “ Charles Haddon Spurgeon—Spurgeon's Sermons Volume 46: 1900 What's in your tackle box?      “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God…” Ephesians 4:11-13   Is all you are catching is hell?  You might want to change your bait.  You might want to change your tackle.  You might want to mend your nets. Simon Peter, and Andrew had already joined him, now he was asking the sons of Zebadee. Matthew 4:21  Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. James and John, quit fishing for the wrong thing.  So what are you fishing for? Nets were used back in this time for everything.   I am fishing for the people with a mind for God.  I am fishing for the hurt and the lost people of God.  I am fishing for the one.  The mini, not the mega.  I am not fishing for attention, recognition, accolades, or compliments. I am fishing to bring families back together.  To bring wives back to their husbands, husbands back to Christ.  I am fishing to bring parents back to parenting.   I am fishing to let young men, be men.  I am fishing to make old men wiser, revered and loved again.  I am fishing to put you back in right order with God.  And I will do it by hook or by crook.  Fishing hook or shepherds crook.   Only you can bring back your crazy kids.  Pastor can't do it.  if you kids have strayed, its your fault, own up to it, and minister there first. Oops, just lost some folks.  You were with me until I went there.    Deuteronomy 32:46 And he said to them, Set your hearts to all the words which I testify among you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. Ephesians 6:4 And, you fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord So what are you fishing for?  (4 points)  Fishing requires patience.  It requires the right equipment.  It requires commitment.  It requires knowledge.  Patience (Rom 5:4) And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation   Equipment -That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Tim 3:17)   Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:12  Commitment Proverbs 16:3  Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.   Knowledge A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth. (Proverbs 14:6)   Wisdom and knowledge are granted unto you; and I will give you riches, and wealth, and honor, such as none of the kings have had that have been before you, neither shall there any after you have the like. 2 Chron 1:12   Mark 1:17  And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.     thanks,   Kenn   that link:   https://youtu.be/FHIf0RPv_Rs    kenn.blanchard@gmail.com

Part 3: Christmas Is the Gospel John 3:16 God Loves the World He loved us first (1 John 4:10) He loves us forever (Rom. 8:37-39) God Gave His Only Son An eternal plan (Is. 7:14) An eternal provision (Luke 2:11) We Believe in Him Simple truth (1 John 5:13) Simple faith (Eph. 2:8-9) We Live Forever We can have it now (1John 5:13) We can count on it (Titus 1:2) More to Consider On January 6, 1850, a snowstorm almost crippled the city of Colchester, England; and a teenage boy was unable to get to the church he usually attended. So he made his way to a nearby Primitive Methodist chapel, where an ill-prepared layman was substituting for the absent preacher. His text was Isaiah 45:22Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth. For many months this young teenager had been miserable and under deep conviction; but though he had been reared in church (both his father and grandfather were preachers), he did not have the assurance of salvation. The unprepared substitute minister did not have much to say, so he kept repeating the text. A man need not go to college to learn to look, he shouted. Anyone can looka child can look! About that time, he saw the visitor sitting to one side, and he pointed at him and said, Young man, you look very miserable. Young man, look to Jesus Christ! The young man did look by faith, and that was how the great preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon was converted. Warren W. Wiresbe Why would God come this time in the form of a baby, rather than a firestorm or whirlwind? Because this time he has not come to bring judgment but to bear it, to pay the penalty for our sins, to take away the barrier between humanity and God, so we can be together. Jesus is God with us. Tim Keller The gospel message is about the greatest gift of all timeGod gave us Jesus Christ, his Son, who brings great joy to everyone who receives him. The purpose of Christmas is to share this gift. And what a perfect opportunity! Christmas is a holiday that focuses on the Savior of the world. There could be no better reason to celebrate Christmas. We can share the most wonderful gift of Jesus so that others may experience the great joy of salvation. If you dont know Jesus Christ as your Savior and youd like to experience great joy, you can receive his gift of salvation right now and join in the celebration of Christmas. Source unknown

WHAT WE HAVE IN JESUS (EPHESIANS 1:4-14) The verses that we are going to review today are about you. This is your life. Here, the Lord is just giving your biography: from grace to glory; from eternity past to eternity future. Now, if you're not interested in what you have in the Lord Jesus, and you're not interested in your own personal spiritual welfare, then what on earth would you be interested in? What on earth could you be interested in?   Did you know that God chose you, that God purposed your salvation, before He laid the foundations of the earth?  Now, you want to talk about some old-time religion, well you can't get any older than this.  I mean, this was before there were any trees and mountains and birds and bees and fleas. Now, that's before there was anything. God, way back in eternity past, chose you, and God chose me.  You know, when we were kids playing football, or basketball, we would choose teams from among the group of kids.  And there is always somebody who wonders if he is going to be chosen at all. Now, isn't it wonderful to know that God chose us so far back? You see, God is love, and what good is it to be a God of love if there's no one to love? Love, by its very nature, cannot dwell by itself.  And so, since God's nature is love, God created people like us, and chose us, that He might love us. Listen, God does not love us because we are valuable, we are valuable because God loves us.  You are somebody because God chose you by His grace. And by His sovereign will, God chose to bestow His love upon you. I like what Charles Haddon Spurgeon had to say about it. He said this: “God certainly must have chosen me before I came into this world, or He never would have chosen me afterward.”  Now, isn't it wonderful to know that even before we got here God looked down and said, “I see who he's going to be, and I choose him”? Most importantly, that means I can't take any credit for my salvation. Because, it wasn't, primarily, that I chose God.  He chose me first.  I love Him because He first loved me.  Click on the play button below to hear a message on what we have in Jesus.   This is a live recording of The Master's Class Bible Study at LifeChange Church Wichita, KS. Listen along as we continue our journey through the book of Philippians. Notes//Quotes: Philippians 1:12-18 - Kim   The Sweet Sovereignty of God   “Rather than detail the hardships he faced, Paul took a divine perspective.” — Richard Malick   “Paul has a definition of life that enables him to face anything. In this passage he is teaching that its not the circumstances of your life, its not whether things go well for you or go ill for you. It's not the circumstances of your life but the way you define life that will determine whether you stand or fall in this world.”  — Timothy Keller   “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)   Because Romans 8:28 exists, those who love God and are loved by him can have confidence that he is working through all of life's circumstances to bring good out of bad, light out of darkness, joy out of sorrow. It's not that God is especially agile, a kind of cosmic PR man adept at manipulating circumstances, but rather that he is the Planner, the Engineer, the Designer who has ordained the means just as much as the end. He ordains the calm and the storm, the darkness and the dawn, the famine and the feast. This being the case, no event is meaningless, no situation purposeless, no condition ultimately hopeless. God is working out his good will not despite dark days, difficult trials, and broken hearts, but through them. Such circumstances are the raw material he uses to form and shape his good plans, his perfect purposes.   God's specialty is not bringing good from good, but good from bad and Romans 8:28 gently tells me that if I trust him through my tears, he will give me reason to laugh; if I trust him through my pain, he will teach me to praise; if I trust him through my grief, he will afterwards show me all the good that came with it and through it. He will show me the precious flowers in the dry desert, the beautiful blooms against the sharp thorns, the gentle petals beneath the vicious skies. For behind every black cloud is a yellow sun, behind every dark night a bright day, behind every frowning providence a smiling face—the smiling face of the God who works all things for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose.  —Tim Challies   “God is too good to be unkind and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.”  — Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, often called the Prince of Preachers, was born on June 19, 1834, into a family legacy of pastors. Though raised by godly parents and grandparents who nurtured his faith, Spurgeon resisted the work of God in his heart. Despite hearing countless Bible lessons and family prayers, he once admitted, "I rebelled and struggled against God for as long as I could." At the age of 16, during a snowstorm that prevented him from attending his usual church, Spurgeon wandered into a small Methodist chapel. The pastor wasn't present, so an untrained layman took the pulpit. His simple message from Isaiah 45:22, Look unto Me, and be ye saved, was all it took. That day, Charles Spurgeon looked to Christ and was saved. Within a year, he was preaching to small groups of villagers, and soon his ministry expanded. By the age of 19, Spurgeon had accepted the call to pastor a declining London church, and under his leadership, it grew rapidly. His powerful sermons, filled with biblical truth, practical wisdom, and unexpected humor, drew thousands. Despite physical ailments and seasons of deep personal suffering, Spurgeon's devotion to preaching never wavered. His impact still resonates today, with his sermons and writings continuing to inspire countless believers. This episode uncovers Spurgeon's journey from a rebellious youth to one of the most significant voices in Christian history, pointing to his unshakable message: "Look to Christ and be saved." Despite physical ailments and seasons of deep personal suffering, Spurgeon's devotion to preaching never wavered. His impact still resonates today, with his sermons and writings continuing to inspire countless believers. This episode uncovers Spurgeon's journey from a rebellious youth to one of the most significant voices in Christian history, pointing to his unshakable message: "Look to Christ and be saved." I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 20th of July, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start with the Book of Jeremiah 29:13. The Lord says:"And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." Then we go to the Book of Revelation 3:20. Jesus says: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."The handle of the door is on the inside. There's no handle on the outside. The Lord expects you and me to search for Him but He says open the door and I will come in and sup with you and you with me. How many times have you heard the story of the young man searching for the girl of his life and he gets on the aeroplane and he flies all over the world looking for this girl and comes all the way back home and she is living next door and she's been there all the time for him. It's the same thing for the young girl who wants to have a career and meet the man of her dreams only to come all the way back and find out that he's the farmer that lives down the road. You know, Elijah was seeking for the Lord, (1 Kings 19:12), and he stood in the mouth of the cave, and a mighty wind went past and the Lord wasn't in that, then there was a massive earthquake, the Lord wasn't in that. Then there was a huge fire, the Lord wasn't in that, and then the still small voice spoke and the Lord was there. So often we search for the Lord in the wrong places, don't we? We go with great excitement and anticipation to a massive conference expecting to hear from God or we go to a huge stadium meeting and we expect to hear from the Lord, but we don't. He's not found in the overseas trips, He's not found in that latest book or that movie, no. He's often found in the quietness of the closet. John Wesley went all the way to America to find God. He came all the way back disheartened and he met Him in a little Bible study in Aldersgate in London. Charles Finney met with God in the forest. The love of God was going through him so strongly he said, "Lord, if you don't stop, You'll kill me."Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the prince of preachers, slipped into a little country chapel just to get out of a snow storm, and heard a farm worker bringing the Gospel because the pastor wasn't there. "Look unto Me and be saved" - that was the scripture he heard and changed his life.Today, you don't have to go overseas, you don't have to go to that big meeting. Go into the quiet place and He will speak to you there.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day, Goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 18th of May, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”It is not so much what we say but rather who we are that makes an impact on the world. Isn't that true? It is like that beautiful lighthouse standing on top of that cliff, with all the dangerous rocks behind it. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the great preacher, said, “The lighthouse makes no noise, it makes no song and it is silent, but on a stormy night it shines through the noise of the waves that are crashing on the seashore, it helps that desperate sea captain, when he is trying to navigate his ship, with waves that are 3 metres high and he can't see where he is going, and then all of a sudden he sees a little light in the distance, just a spark, that's all he sees, and it speaks louder than a thousand choirs singing because now he knows where the danger is.”Many, many years ago, I had the privilege of going to speak at a men's conference in the northern part of our beloved South Africa. I got letter in the post before I left, to say that “There is an old gentleman who would like to meet with you.” Well, I want to be honest with you, at the time I felt I didn't have time to go and see him, but I felt the Holy Spirit say, “You must go and visit this old man on the way up to the conference”, which I duly did. As I walked into his house, I sensed the presence of God there. I saw a huge photograph on the wall of an old lady and an old man. I looked at that old man and I couldn't believe it. It was a photo of the Yorkshire Plumber, Smith Wigglesworth, a man who had been used by God, mightily. In fact, something like 13 people had been raised from the dead through his ministry. I said to the old gentleman, Mr Harold Berry, “Sir, is this a friend of yours?” He said, ‘It is one of my relatives. It is my wife's grandfather.” I was amazed. I got on my knees, on the carpet, and I asked him to please anoint me. I said, “I want your mantle, Sir.” This old gentleman had started many churches up in the Congo. He was ninety years old. He walked into his room, got a bottle of healing oil and anointed my head with oil. Then he started praying undiluted scripture over me. It was impressive, very impressive, but the part that I remember, only one part, he said, “It won't be so much what he says but who he is, that will make the impact,” And I have never forgotten that. It is not what you say, it is not how loud you can sing, it is how well you can shine for the Lord.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 5th of March, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in Isaiah 45:22: "Look to Me, and be saved,…" Then we go straight to the Gospel of Matthew 11:28:"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." I want to say to those people today who are listening to this message and say, "I am not a preacher, I don't seem to be able to do much for the Lord, I am basically a nobody." I want to tell you that God uses nobodies. Many, many years ago in the 1800's, there was a young teenager trying to get home one night and a severe snow storm came up. He ducked into a little Methodist chapel on the road, and there was hardly anybody in the church. He didn't go there to hear the Gospel, he went there to get out of the snow storm. The pastor wasn't even there that night because it was a very cold, miserable night but there was a farm worker, not an educated man, and he took the service. He stood up and said the very scripture that I have just read: "Look to Me and be saved,…" And that young teenager gave his life to Christ that night. Who was he? Well, he was one of the greatest preachers that have ever lived. His name was Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He was a Baptist. Do you know that when he was 21 years old, they built the London Tabernacle for him to preach in because the crowds were so large, up to 10,000 people at one service? A farm worker used what he had for Jesus, and Jesus did the rest. You and I need to do what God has called us to do. There are people who are needing rest. "Come unto Me, all of you who are weary and heavy laden…" There are many people today, go out today and tell them what Jesus means to you, because that is all it's about, nothing else. I want to tell you that Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote 250+ books. He was an unlearned man. He spoke with a very strong English country accent and yet the crowds came in by the thousands, because one farm worker said, "I will do the service" on the Sunday night because the pastor couldn't make it.Today, go out and tell people your story. Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a Baptist preacher in London who lived from 1834 to 1892. By the end of end of the 19th century, more than 100 million copies of Spurgeon's sermons had been sold in 23 languages.  This figure has long since been surpassed many times over, and Spurgeon's sermons continue to minister to people today. The 6-volume collection of Spurgeon's sermons – known as the New Park Street Pulpit and the 57-volume Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit comprise one of the greatest collections of sermons in history.Although these volumes continue to be used and referenced by many, only portions have been re typeset in the more than 100 years since the collection was completed. That means that the majority of copies available from this set are very difficult to read and contain the occasional typo or other error. On this episode of the podcast, I welcome back Jared Payne of A Pilgrim's Coffer, who has undertaken a brand new, fully re-typeset edition of the New Park Street Pulpit. We'll talk about the impact of CH Spurgeon, how Jared became interested in Spurgeon, the lasting value of these printed sermons, and the ambitious project of re-typesetting these sermons. If you are fan of Charles Spurgeon and have benefited from his written works, you're going to enjoy our conversation as well as the upcoming new edition of the New Park Street Pulpit.Get the newsletter at ReasonableTheology.org/Subscribe. There is no way to understand how the baby born in a manger has been here since eternity, and yet Jesus has been the Everlasting Father. We are also told in Ephesians 1:5 and 11 that before the foundation of the world God predestined those who would be His children. This is truly a mystery.  In this episode, Lori will answer an important question and talk about: Jesus Christ, the second Adam, our spiritual Father Does Psalm 68:5 mean that all fatherless children are automatically spiritual children of God? In this episode, learn from Mike Morris, founder of Children's Evangelistic Ministries (CEMI) and creator of the multicolored soccer ball. Mike's goal was to energize the world's children with the Gospel message. Learn how God put an innovative idea in their mind, resulting in a multicolored soccer ball in their hand to reach their goal. The multicolored soccer ball was inspired by Mike's 20 years working for CEF and using The Wordless Book. The Wordless Book works as a powerful evangelism tool, using colored pages to share the Gospel with children – even with no words! Evidence points to it being invented by the famous London Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon in a message given on January 11, 1866, to several hundred orphans regarding Psalm 51:7. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 13th of September, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Gospel of Luke 5:4: "When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep…" I want to say to you today, even as we have to catch the big fish in the deep sea, so too, Jesus is calling you and me to go deeper today. You see, it is the safest place to be if you ask any sailor who knows how to sail a sailing ship. The deep seas are the safest place to be when the storms come.Mark Guy Pearce wrote, "May our prayer be that of an old Englishman, who said, "Oh Lord, send us into the deep water of the sea, for we are so close to shore that even a small breeze from the devil could break our ship to pieces on the rocks. Again, Lord, send us into the deep water of the sea, where there will be plenty of room to win a glorious victory."Yes, I can hear you saying, "But those deep waters, that's where the strong winds are. That's where those contrary big waves are." True, but it is also the safest place for the big sailing ships when the storms come, not hugging the land where all the rocks are but getting out into the deep water. When the storm is at its height, that is where our faith is built the most. It's where we rely on Jesus the most. Charles Haddon Spurgeon said, "Fairweather faith is not faith at all." Today, let us not be afraid of the big storms. Let us get right out into the deep waters, where Jesus can take care of us and direct our paths. Today, set your sail to sail all the way home to our place of rest in Heaven one day, through the deep waters of life.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

No one likes to struggle, and suffering---we could all do without. Or could we? Most often it is the struggle of life that tests the rootedness of our faith. Pastor and author Charles Haddon Spurgeon writes: "We cannot be established except by suffering. It is of no use our hoping that we shall be well-rooted if no March winds have passed over us. The young oak cannot be expected to strike its roots so deep as the old one. Those old gnarlings on the roots, and those strange twistings of the branches, all tell of many storms that have swept over the aged tree. But they are also indicators of the depths into which the roots have dived." The depth of the roots are indicators of the storms of life. How do you handle the storms of life? When storms hit, do the roots of your faith go deeper into Christ or do you feel yourself slowly being pulled away? Jesus, in his parable about the soils, talks about how the seed of gospel lands in some soil and begins to quickly germinate but then this happens: "But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had not root." ~ Matthew 13:6 Pressure, opposition, struggle, and suffering are all realities of following Jesus. For some, these pressures uproot their lives and everything about their faith falls apart. Yet for others the roots of their faith go even deeper and they literally grow stronger through the circumstances. How can we, the face of "March winds" and not only remain rooted, but grow stronger as well? This is one of the focuses of  New Testament book of Colossians. The apostle Paul is writing to Christian who are feeling the pressure to uproot their lives from Christ and find another option; like returning to Judaism or choosing one of the pagan cultural gods. This is why he writes these urgent words: "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." ~ Colossians 2:6-7 On Sunday we will study all of what Paul writes in chapter two and discover the strategy he teaches to help all of us remain rooted in King Jesus. To be a part of the conversation, give a listen to part three of Rooted.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 25th of August, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Ecclesiastes 4:6: “Better a handful with quietnessThan both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.”“And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.”Mark 6:31Then, the last scripture is one that we should all take notice of. It is found in the Book of Exodus 20:11, right at the beginning of the Bible:“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.”Even God Himself rested. We really need to purposely take time to rest, my dear friend. This message probably applies more to me than to many others. You know, the swallow comes all the way from the Northern Hemisphere, right down to the Southern Hemisphere, as the seasons change, but he rests and feeds on the wing while he is flying. That is exactly right, and we need to do the same. William Carey took the Gospel of Jesus Christ all the way across to India. He was probably one of the most busy men. He translated the Bible into many different Eastern languages. He became the chief interpreter in Delhi for the British Government. He was a man who loved God but, he had a very special place where he rested. That's right - he had a little rose garden. When he was completely worked out, he would go into his rose garden and work on his roses. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Baptists called him “the Prince of Preachers”, said in his senior years, “By doing less, I hope to achieve more.” Some of us, including me, are rushing around too much. We need to slow down and find a special place to rest, somewhere in your garden, in your closet, where you and Jesus can spend time together and rest, and we will find that we will be much more effective.God bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

I also wanted to reference Charles Spurgeon's book which was published way back in 1962.Spurgeon believed that revival was a work of God's sovereign grace and that it was something that could not be engineered or manipulated by human effort. He believed that revival was characterized by a deep sense of conviction and repentance and that it resulted in significant changes in behavior and a renewed focus on God.Tune in now, and let's go bigger, better, and deeper!
