Do you have a passion for the environment? Do you have some mission that you want to pursue but it feels overwhelming to achieve yourself? Do you want to empower your impact by building great teams? Our special guest Joan Gregerson has been an eco-activist for her entire career, a community organizer and a leader in the environmental transformation movement. Joan is the author of the recently published book Climate Action Challenge and the Founder of the Green Team Academy, which has a mission to partner with 1,000 eco-initiatives over 90 days. Most important, Joan is a proven expert in building partnerships and teams after learning for herself that doing it herself didn't serve her or her mission. Today, Joan helps people who want to get together, make a difference and feel better. Joan is a self-proclaimed Eco-Nut with a heart for the environment and a calling to make a difference. Joan will be sharing practical ideas on the importance of building your team, as well as her eco-wisdom on the importance of taking action now to preserve our environment. The Impact Leadership Podcast is brought to you by Cardivera, the leadership development eco-system that helps your grow your people, grow your business and grow your life. Show Notes In this episode you'll learn… The urgency to take collaborative action to address the environmental issues in the world The importance of making it clear what you want (and asking for what you want) when you're pursuing a mission The power of leading where you are no matter what your age The “sweet spot” for being effective for the planet Beware of limiting your activism to “clicktivism” (i.e. click here to support a cause) The key to change is to form a team The high impact strategy of assembling your list of 100 “partners” Working on a project with a team provides critical support through the challenges That small action alone is not always the best approach to change The connection between addictive behaviors and personal / business habits that are harming the environment (and the similar challenges when you seek to change those habits and behaviors) The ways that a negative message often promotes inaction – if you want people to act, you have to make it a positive message (“You can't scare people into taking care of the planet”) The impact concept of “2% for life” (3 hours a week) … give 3 hours a week to environmental initiatives “There's no waste … only a lack of creativity” All the benefits of forming and working as a team, including emotional support, which helps create sustainable change Leadership and growth lessons from nature (nature's return on investment is much greater than are typical sought after business returns) Teams create ripples of impact The important role of enlisting mentors and other support for your initiatives The critical role of community organizing to effect change (not projects) Resources: Joan Gregerson Green Team Academy Participate in the Climate Action Channel Work of Dolores Huerta The Impact Leadership Podcast Cardivera

In Denver CO, one of a big family I’m 59 years old we were nature kids IDK if they understand that they are nature kids being one of 8 kids ~ my poor mom trying to cook for 10 people 3 times a day climbing trees digging holes in the backyard At age 10 got my first job working for my dad if I needed a dollar He was a petroleum engineer, so I plotted all the data. You plotted a curve on logarithmic paper and draw it out to 0. No wonder I’m such a nerd! and I’m on my 5th grade. I ask him what are you doing? why are you focused so much on this? I was age 10 that was 1970 he said, I’m talking to people at the oil company. I thought the adults have it under control first earth day was in 1970 10% of the population it was really started as a teach in series of teach in people just get together and talk to each other what do you feel like is important what do I feel is important  and what do we need to make the environment personal to them working on projects together demanded the government change them? That was the start in 1970 under Republican Nixon started the EPA clean air act clean water act I thought great we got this thing together! 1978 President Carter came to colorado opened the solar energy institute I went to the University of Colorado and said I want to work in Solar and they said we don’t have it so that should have been my first clue, that maybe the adults don’t have it under control got into engineering my way to make a big impact results weren’t just the water saving projects didn’t have the results I expected no culture around it we just did projects and left we didn’t ever deal with the people I wasted a lot of years trying to do things in my community on my own spending up a lot of effort and not having much impact.  I ended up in Longmont became a non-profit in less then 2 years I don’t think I heard the word community when I went through engineering. That's sort of what brought me what I am doing now, I learned what works in Longmont, I went to my hometown, and want back to Denver where we had similar amazing results! We’re told for climate action to do these things, but the first climate action should be: start a TEAMclimate action grow more food do recycling in your kids school or start a community garden bike share make a huge impact that's why I started the Green TEAM Academy (https://www.greenteamacademy.com/all-podcast-episodes/) (https://www.earthweeksummit.com/) (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/) the Green Organic Garden Podcast (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/) is one of our sponsors! That's so exciting. That's how near and dear to my heart this is, and do you know the senator who got that started is a play I have about Senator Gaylord Nelson. The play is about this little Bear Sally Bear who is upset about not having anything for earth day prepared and her bother billy bear is like why do we celebrate earth day anyway and she explains everything you just said and the other is the Turtle Mishap about a turtle stuck in a six-pack holder. (https://amzn.to/2JoNZkJ) This is so exciting I haven't met a lot of earth day nuts like me. that was a long answer doing so much already One of the big things that changed things in Longmont was having an earth day festival What was so weird for me was, as an engineer, the biggest thing I had ever organized was a family birthday party we ended up with this fairgrounds space and it was like 10 times bigger then we wanted, but the deposit... In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 10, let’s explore how we can bolster our mental health. Each of us is at risk for the debilitating impacts of mental health struggles. In this episode, discover Joan’s top five mental health tools and how her mental health needs have shifted after the death of her mom and sister.   As I was out in my car, I heard bits and pieces of an interview on Colorado Public Radio with Adam Cayton-Holland discussing his tragic-comic memoir about dealing with his sister’s suicide. In talking about the book, Tragedy Plus Time, Adam talks about how mental health is something that requires constant awareness.   “I look at everything through the lens of: How is this going to affect my mental health?”- Adam Cayton-Holland   I also came across Amy Porterfield’s episode about dealing with depression on her Online Marketing Made Easy podcast, in honor of World Mental Health Day, October 10.   As we are doing important work, it’s worth having conversations about how we can bolster our mental health… the foundation for everything we want to be and do.   I wrote a book: Tuning In to Inner Peace: The Surprisingly Fun Way to Transform Your Life   Feel calm and lucky in any situation Nature as healer Exercise as stress reducer Say “no” to anything that doesn’t feel like a fabulous fit Ask for help   Saying “no” more: Car mechanic Job interviews   With the loss of my sister and my mom in the past two years, I saw how asking for help or not asking impacts not only your life, but those around you. With my main conversationalists gone from my life, I had a void.   Proactively reaching out for help: Got a loan Got my teeth cleaned Got vision insurance and went to the eye doctor Got my flu shot Took my car to the mechanic Took three-day jaunts to Glenwood Springs to swim in the hot springs pool Bought fresh juice for a juice cleanse Got a massage Interviewing for a business coach and virtual assistant Went back to weekly drumming and singing lesson More proactive about calling friends   Goal: Build a personal care plan that includes the human contact, love and support to help keep me strong mentally. World Health Organization: Half of all mental illness begins by age 14. Growing recognition of the importance of building mental resilience Prevention begins with better understanding.   Quote: Asking for help is a sign of strength. Joan Gregerson   My mental health is job number one. The ecological challenges ahead of us are of epic proportions. We can learn a lot by studying successful revolutions that have come before us. In this episode, you’ll hear 10 lessons for Eco-Leaders from the struggle to overcome apartheid in South Africa, as told in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. [1:00] Our education systems don’t teach us about representation or revolution. [1:15] Historically, there is a tendency for power to be concentrated in the hands of the few, at the expense of the many. [1:30] It is no less of a challenge than overcoming slavery, genocide, or apartheid. [2:00] You can’t compare 1-to-1 the suffering and injustice of apartheid to the collapse of ecological systems, but there are some similarities. [2:15] What could be more unjust than taking away the opportunity for future generations to inhabit a liveable world. [2:30] We can learn a lot from studying how huge entrenched problems were overcome. [2:50] Takeaways from the film: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:00] Not on Netflix. Check the library or wherever you watch movies. [3:15] 10 Lessons for Eco-Leaders from the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:30] 1. Individually we are weak. Together we are strong. (with open hand vs closed fist image) [4:00] 2. Welcome the challenges. They will help you become who you need to be. [4:45] 3. Remind people that the end result you desire is inevitable. [5:25] 4. Don’t turn on each other. [6:40] 5. Allies matter. [7:00] 6. Follow the money. [7:50] 7. Leaders lead. [8:30] 8. Peace is the only way. [9:00] 9. Vote. [9:45]10. Don’t give up.   Quotes   It always seems impossible until it’s done. Nelson Mandela   What could be more unjust than taking away the opportunity for future generations to inhabit a livable world. Joan Gregerson   We humans are going to learn to live in harmony with nature or we’re going to fall away. It’s inevitable. What’s stopping you from becoming an eco-leader? If you’re thinking that you need experience as an eco-leader or even as a leader, at all, think again! Learn from Xiuhtezcatl Martinez’ first public speech at age six.   Time-stamped notes: [1:00] “Experience required”... a common criteria for jobs [1:20] It would be natural to think that you’d need to have eco-leader or any leadership experience [1:30] Guess what? That’s not true. [1:35] “If you want to make an impact, you don’t already need to be a leader. But you do need to be willing to become a leader.” - Joan Gregerson [2:00] Passion, commitment, willingness to learn, grow, work together [2:20] “Xiuhtezcatl - first public speech at 6 yrs old” YouTube Video “I came to talk to you today about how sacred the earth is. Most kids don’t even know that the world is sacred.” “Every choice we make is for or against our future.” [4:10] Xiuhtezcatl is now 18 years old: a global eco-leader, spoke at the UN three times, rapper and hip-hop artist, best-selling author of “We Rise” and youth leader of Earth Guardians. [4:40] First met when talking about them performing at the Youth of the Earth Festival. [5:50] Amazing support from Aztec traditions from his father and environmental educator mom [6:40] What can we learn from Xiuhtezcatl at age 6? You don’t need to already be a leader to make an impact. You do need to believe strongly that your ideas and your voice matter. You have to overcome any self-doubt that would keep you from expressing your opinion You have to ask people to do better. You have to believe in and be willing to work for a better future. We all have to work together. Though you may start small, your impact may grow more than you could imagine at the beginning [7:20] So, do you need previous experience to become an eco-leader? No, but you need to be willing to become one.   Shareable quotes:   Every choice we make is for or against our future. - Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, at age 6   If you want to make an impact, you don’t already need to be a leader. If you struggle with your eating habits, getting proper nutrition and achieving whole health is also a challenge. If you struggle with your eating habits, getting proper nutrition and achieving whole health is also a challenge.Joan Gregerson, Holistic Health Coach, thinks the answer lies in looking first at why you eat, then how, then what.It makes sense to say that the "why" is for survival, sustenance, nourishment -- essentially, living. Why is living important and why is your life, specifically, important? What is your purpose? What you eat should be the result of answering those questions. It's the key to figuring out how you can bolster your life with your food choices. For example, choosing fast food creates a different world than sprouting your own seeds. Listen in as Joan joins host Lisa Davis to explain her philosophy around food issues, as well as how you can set up an easy plan to get your habits on the healthy path. She also discusses "Finding Food Freedom" with these four points:Bioindividuality: What works for one individual may not work for another.Spirituality: Mindful eating, choosing food based on how it is raised and knowing how your choices impact the environment.Community: Overcoming isolation, loneliness and experiencing love; belonging and purpose is as important as food in keeping people healthy.Ingenuity: Looking to nature as a model to follow; the awe and elegance of eating... simply as people have done for thousands of years.
