Trick or treat, you spooky bastards. This week, Sarah Beth and I sit and discuss the 2007 anthology horror film Trick 'r Treat. We give a breakdown of each of the segments, we go over the central themes of the film, and we talk about Halloween traditions. Trick 'r Treat is an American anthology horror film directed by Michael Dougherty in his debut. The film features four interconnected Halloween-themed horror stories. A central figure in these stories is Sam, a trick-or-treating demon dressed in orange pajamas with a burlap sack over his head, who appears whenever someone breaks a Halloween tradition. Sam's presence ties the stories together, enforcing the rules of Halloween. Thank you, everyone, for your support. In this episode, we discuss how the film shifted the focus to the female protagonist, witchcraft, as a metaphor for adolescence and teenage rebellion, and we even talk about how The Craft compares to other films. The Craft is a supernatural teen horror film about four outcast teenage girls at a Los Angeles private school who pursue witchcraft for their own gain and end up experiencing negative repercussions. What's up, ghoulies? This week on the podcast, Sarah Beth and I sit down and chat about the cursed film theory behind the Poltergeist film franchise. We discuss the tragic and untimely deaths of Dominique Dunne and Heather O'Rourke, the origin of the curse, cast members' thoughts on the matter, and whether we believe the films to be cursed or not. The cursed film theory surrounding the 1982 film Poltergeist stems from several tragic and eerie incidents involving the cast and crew. The theory suggests that the production was haunted or cursed due to the use of real human skeletons in one of the film's scenes, which some believe brought bad luck. Key events fueling the curse include the untimely deaths of two of the film's young stars. These tragedies, combined with other on-set accidents and unusual occurrences, have led many to believe that the Poltergeist franchise is cursed. Thank you, everyone, for your support. In this episode, I review the show's basic premise, some memorable episodes, themes throughout the series, and what made it stand out from other horror properties. "Friday the 13th: The Series" is a Canadian-American television series airing from 1987 to 1990. Despite its name, it has no direct connection to the "Friday the 13th" slasher films. The show follows cousins Micki and Ryan, who inherit an antique store. After selling the items, they learn from Jack Marshak that the antiques are cursed. The trio then works together to recover these cursed objects and secure them in the store's vault to prevent further harm. The series is also known as "Friday's Curse" in some markets. Welcome back, folks. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by my wife Sarah Beth, and our daughter, Sophie as we sit and talk about age-appropriate horror and the idea of how to introduce your kids to horror. We discuss the early stages in literature starting from ages 3-6, TV shows during the years of 7-9, and the films that begin to shape us from ages 10-12 and beyond. Age-appropriate horror refers to horror content suitable for a specific age group based on emotional and psychological development. This type of content considers the audience's ability to process fear, suspense, and the themes presented in the story without causing undue distress or trauma. It allows younger audiences to enjoy the fun of being spooked in a safe and controlled manner, gradually introducing more intense and complex horror as they mature. What's happening, Spooky People? This week on the podcast, I sit with Sarah Beth and we continue our cursed films conversations as we talk about the 1983 film, The Twilight Zone: The Movie. We go over a brief description of the film, itself before we shift gears and talk a little more about the "curse". We go over the details that led many to consider this a cursed film. We discussed how John Landis broke laws, was reported to shrug off safety suggestions, and other onset tragedies since then, including The Crow and Rust. "The Twilight Zone: The Movie" curse refers to a series of tragic incidents associated with the production and release of the 1983 anthology film. The movie was based on the classic television series created by Rod Serling. Four segments were directed by different directors, including John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller. While not a traditional curse in the supernatural sense, the tragedies associated with "The Twilight Zone: The Movie" have left a dark cloud over the production, leading many to refer to it as a curse. It serves as a reminder of the risks involved in filmmaking and the importance of prioritizing safety on set. Thank you, everyone, for your support. Hello and welcome back, folks. This week on the podcast, I welcome Dan Ferraro as we discuss found footage and its roots, how it's evolved over the years, where we think it's going, and what OG franchises could be done in a found footage film style. Found footage in horror involves presenting the narrative through footage discovered after an event has occurred, often depicted as recordings from camcorders, surveillance cameras, or handheld devices. This technique aims to create a sense of realism and immersion by portraying events as if the characters captured them. Typically, found footage films utilize shaky camera work, naturalistic acting, and minimal editing to enhance the illusion of authenticity. The storyline often revolves around characters documenting paranormal phenomena, exploring haunted locations, or encountering supernatural entities. Thank you, everyone, for your support. Happy New Year, folks. Glad you made it back. This week on the podcast, I sit with Sarah Beth and Theresa and we talk a little bit about cursed films and our plan for 2024 as it relates to this theme. We mention a few of the major horror films associated with curses and we make a plan to further dissect them as the year goes on. Cursed films refer to movies believed to have had unfortunate or eerie occurrences happen during their production or after their release, leading to superstitions about the film being cursed. These incidents could range from accidents on set, unexplained deaths of cast or crew members, to strange happenings during filming.  The idea of cursed films often emerges from a series of unfortunate events or coincidences rather than any supernatural force. Welcome back, folks. On this episode of the podcast, we welcome back the team of Sarah Beth, Theresa, and Maryland Phil as we review our theme of Horror Through the Decades and 2023. We walk through the decades and highlight what made each one unique and how it set the stage for the decade to follow. Horror films have evolved significantly over the last century, reflecting societal fears, technological advancements, and shifts in storytelling. In the 1920s, films like "Nosferatu" introduced eerie atmospheres and iconic monsters, emphasizing shadow, light, and distorted sets to evoke fear. In the 1930s and 40s, Universal Studios brought iconic monsters to life, where Gothic settings and creature features dominated. The 1950s and ‘60s, spawned creatures like "Godzilla" and "The Blob". While films like “Psycho” explored psychological terror. The new wave of the 1970s explored taboo subjects and visceral horror. The 1980s and 1990s popularized the slasher formula and subverted genre tropes. In the 2000s the genre sparked a trend in found footage horror, modernized versions of classics, and blended social commentary with horror. Throughout this evolution, horror films have reflected societal anxieties, technological advancements, and storytelling innovations, continuously adapting to captivate audiences and explore the depths of fear and suspense. From 2010 through 2019, horror saw a range of themes, styles, and subgenres. Ranging from films like "Get Out" and "Hereditary" as psychological thrillers to "The Visit" and "REC" in the found footage subgenre and supernatural themes such as The Conjuring, Insidious, and Sinister franchises. "The Purge" examined societal violence and class divides. While films like "The Witch" and "Midsommar" combined horror elements with art-house aesthetics. Overall, the 2010s were a rich and diverse decade for horror, with filmmakers exploring new ways to frighten and engage audiences while addressing contemporary issues and pushing the boundaries of the genre. Horror in the 2000s saw a mix of traditional and modern elements. It was marked by a resurgence of supernatural themes, with movies like "The Ring" and "The Grudge" introducing eerie, vengeful spirits. Psychological horror also gained prominence. Taking risks is ... risky. Might fail, right? You don't just suddenly decide to move from, say, the midwest to Los Angeles to try and turn your talents into a rewarding career. And, lord have mercy, having something like Tourette Syndrome and comorbids like anxiety doesn't help, does it? For pop singer Harper Starling, it did. This is, in fact, her story. She uprooted, made a long trek to L.A., where she knew no one, and, as we speak, is now preparing for a three week tour of England. Harper directly credits Tourette Syndrome for where she is right now in her singing career, which include a single out now called "Not Another What If" and another soon to debut. She's really forthcoming and direct in her music and that carries through this conversation. Hat-tip to Harper's manager, the very cool Cindy Valentine, for helping to coordinate this one. https://www.harperstarling.com/# Tourette's Podcast is made possible by the Tourette Association of America, tourette.org. Recall our episode a while back with the authors of scientific report examining why doctors were seeing reported swells of young women over the course of the pandemic with Tourette-looking symptoms, and how social media like TikTok -- by way of the tic-heavy videos posted by influential Tourette personalities -- might be a player. We're revisiting that on this episode, but from a different angle. What else might be going on? Are we getting it wrong when it comes to what Tourette looks like in females? What we examine: Are there real differences in how Tourette expresses in boys versus girls, men versus women? What's up with that observed boost in young women presenting tics? TikTok? What do we know about Tourette Syndrome nowadays from a science standpoint? How involved are Tourette patients in the conversations and work in science and medicine? This is a replay of an episode from 2019 that speaks pretty well to the emails we get asking for discussion of alternative "remedies" -- and why the podcast doesn't (or does so with heavy heaps of caution). Here's the writeup that accompanied the original airing: For Episode 10 of Season 3, we've called a doctor. (Yes, one with TS.) Clay Jones, M.D., is a pediatrician with a frequent byline on the widely read Science-Based Medicine (SBM) blog and is co-host of The Prism Podcast, which explores science, skepticism and the perils of not being an informed or careful seeker of what should be life-improving solutions. That's kind of an uncomfortable subject to dig into sometimes, particularly within the Tourette community. I've heard from Touretters asking whether I've tried certain alternative "remedies" or "healing" practices, or if I know anyone who has. What's tough about that is we as Touretters don't have a wholesale, go-to, zap-it-away solution presently. And as noted in a previous post here, current insurance protocols don't make it any easier. That may lead individuals searching for relief wherever hope might be -- which, sadly, is the scenario that swindlers love. That's not to say there's no merit in looking outside the mainstream for a solution that might work for you when all else has failed. Just be careful. Really careful. Ask questions. Ask for the science behind it, and don't accept feelgood anecdotes as a substitute. Some listeners I've heard from are desperate -- the word used -- for relief from complicated TS. Clay, on this episode, discusses his own TS before helping us develop our defenses against peddlers of illegitimate answers. Tourette. Rhetoric. Tourrhetoric. We're talking on this episode with Sophia Maier, a Touretter who takes extra care and study when it comes to the shapes and tones and incisions we create with our words. This isn't just a "words matter" dialogue -- it's about really caring for the language people use and why, so loaded with implications for empathy, public policy and, maybe most importantly, reflections WITHIN individual communities to allow for criticism and growth. In focus here are Sophia's life as a trans woman, her appreciation for her own tics, coprolalia (never censored here) included, and her recognition that individual challenging factors like TS aren't enough to constitute or capture the full experience of other marginalized or mistreated communities. We're also remembering the life and work of someone we've lost -- Suzanne Dobson, chief executive of Tourette's Action in the UK. Let's crack into a mystery. Scientists began to notice it as the pandemic revised our lives -- young people, almost all of them women, started showing up to the doctor in surprising numbers with what looked like Tourette Syndrome. Out of nowhere. No such prior symptoms. The common denominator? They'd all been watching Tourette content on the social media video-making-and-sharing app TikTok. Is the TS stuff on TikTok somehow bringing out some dormant, previously undocumented tic disorder in its viewers? Are they faking it? What's going on? We bring on a couple scientists -- Drs. Tamara Pringsheim and Davide Martino of the University of Calgary -- to investigate. And, yeah, it gets interesting. Plus: Revisiting a question from a struggling parent. I posted this in the Tourette’s Podcast Discussion Group earlier and figured I should here too — It's been a long day here, but I wanted to say something: If there's one thing the Tourette community knows, it's how to be empathetic and appreciate the stories of wrongly treated populations. Clearly the magnitude of protest we're seeing expressed in so many cities in recent days highlights how long the black community and other historically oppressed populations have asked broader society and its elected leaders to truly listen and take the need for meaningful, permanent change seriously, and how it can't wait any longer. Sure, there have been great strides toward a better world over the past few decades, but there's been a lot of comfortable pretending that it's all mission-accomplished; we're obviously not where we should be. There's a horrible passivity in letting the grievances of affected people be downplayed or, if listened to, quickly forgotten as news cycles move on to the next thing. I can't imagine how frustrating and painful it must be for deeply affected populations to see chances for change disintegrate as the world slips back into business as usual. I hope the energy we see right now clears that hurdle so our leaders from the federal to the household level take seriously the threat of racism and hatred, and how we're torn apart until we do. Here's an analogy the Tourette community might be familiar with: the longer we suppress, the bigger or more pronounced the release tends to be. I hope what's happening now makes way for actual relief, and I hope our leaders do a lot better than form some temporary task force or one-off initiative just to say we've done something. In the words of George Carlin, "An initiative is an idea that isn't going anywhere." Change requires more than that. We all need to acknowledge that we don't understand as much as we think we do. If you watched the recent season of Survivor: Edge of Extinction, you'll recall notably energetic contestant Wendy Diaz. Wendy joins us on this episode, the finale to Season 3, and opens up about her life with Tourette Syndrome through rapid-pace honesty. We discuss her portrayal and how she thought the show handled her TS; Tourette hyperpower; aversion to sleep; social weirdness; strange takes about TS (from a large TV audience); being known for more than your TS; and trading tics, including a "sign of the cross" she ended up giving Ben. Plus: Great answers to the question about jury duty with TS; a Tourettic race-car driver; a thoughtful fundraiser; and something big that happened to Ben this past week. Peter Zhao was born and raised through boyhood in China before he moved to the U.S. and became the affable, freestyle-rapping online presence many of you know as Fabulously_Tourette. Peter, while multitasking (finishing up a bowl of soup, later changing his child's diaper and performing other home activites during the conversation) takes us from his youth and early family dynamics to establishing himself in New York and later incorporating Tourette Syndrome into his persona. He used to struggle with it; he's now content. Peter also gives an interesting explanation of his coprolalia, discusses his own tic-management preferences, and talks with Ben about racial diversity in TS. A rewarding episode covering territory Tourette's Podcast hasn't hit before.    SENSORY NOTE: While it's an awesome conversation, there's some background noise in parts of this episode, as we caught our guest in his duties as a father caring for two children at his home. The best thing about organizing a team in your community is that you can have one-to-one conversations. In today’s episode we learn about the Belonging Revolution in Longmont, Colorado. In an interview with Dan Benavidez, we hear how he and Director of Public Safety, Mike Butler, are building community by walking neighborhoods with the simple message: You belong.   Dan Benavidez is a long time Longmont resident who has served his community in many capacities. From Mayor Pro-tem to board member of Teaching Peace, Eco-Cycle, Longmont Community Justice Partnership and many other organizations he has represented the Latino community with heart and commitment. These days Dan is literally walking his talk about building strong, cohesive communities by walking Longmont neighborhoods with Director of Public Safety, Mike Butler as they venture to grow “The Belonging Revolution”.   Mike has served Longmont for two decades as Chief of Police and now Director of Public Safety. He makes a habit of engaging innovative strategies for connecting “public” and “safety”. His latest innovation is to be an ambassador for Belonging in Longmont. The city’s slogan is, “You belong in Longmont”, and these two are bringing that notion to life.   Longmont, Colorado: Population 100,000 Approximately 30% Latino population, many foreign-born Mexicans Many come from places where the police and politicians are corrupt.   July 2014: Mike Butler reached out and asked Dan Benavidez to take a walk in the neighborhood.   Now, Dan and Mike go out and walk neighborhoods in Longmont most Sundays.     Typical interaction: Residents are out working in the yard or on their cars, Dan says in Spanish, Hello, This is the Chief of Police and he’d like to meet you. Then Mike says the same in English and gives them his card. He tells them they belong in Longmont and asks how they feel. He then asks them if they would volunteer. A conversation ensues. Sometimes, they’ll be invited for a bite to eat. Dan takes a picture so they have something to share with their friends and family, showing that they know the Chief of Police.   Have walked over 200 neighborhoods. Talked individually with 2,000-3,000 people. Over 1,000 have signed up to volunteer.   Commitment: Dan and Mike, nearly every Sunday.   Longmont: Lowest crime rate in the state of Colorado. Five years ago there was quite a number of gangs. Virtually no gangs now.   This didn’t happen because of Ferguson. It took off before that.   Spreading across the U.S…. so they really are starting  a revolution.   They are taking the power right down to the people, where they are. They’re not asking people to come to a City Council meeting. Instead, they’re going where the people already are.   In addition to Mike and Dan, sometimes others will join them: Mayor, City Councilperson, Congressmen, County Commissioner. But the rule is, no politics. The goal is to bring the power to the people.   Mike asks, Have you ever had any interactions with the police? Has anyone ever stopped you? Tell me about it.   Another question that the Mayor might ask, Do you like the way we’re running the city?   Advice to others who want to start a similar effort, around public safety or environment: Go to the people. You don’t say come to an event out of the neighborhood. Go where they’re at. Don’t make them come to you.   Example: Did an initiative with Eco-Cycle. Had an event in the community, with the Mayor, food and information. Did not ask people to sign up. Results: Recycling increased 130%   Simple agenda: You belong here. How’s it going? Having a conversation.   This demonstrates that having one-to-one conversations makes those deep connections.   Resources: The Belonging Revolution The Belonging Revolution Goes to Torn Neighborhoods, Restorative Justice Colorado Mike Butler: A Thousand to One… Belonging Revolution, Daily Times-Call, January 2017 To be notified of the walks or to read the notes from the walks, contact Dan Benavidez.   We’d love to hear your thoughts on this over in the Podcast Discussion Group. If you’re feeling exhausted by making millions of decisions about shopping and recycling, then this episode will give you hope! In this episode, let’s discuss the video The Story of Change and the key to societal transformation.   I'm a big fan of the free videos created by Annie Leonard and the nonprofit that grew out of her 2007 viral video, The Story of Stuff. If you want a short video to cover the basics of key environmental issues, chances are The Story of Stuff has one. That's why I wasn't surprised when I found their Story of Change video.   In under seven minutes, you can watch the entire Story of Change. So, yup, watch it and use it with your team.   Here are the key points from the Story of Change movie: We are getting the message: We can go green by being better shoppers and recyclers and telling our friends to do the same. If I do this, I've done my part. And if I don't, it's my fault that the planet is being destroyed.   This has some serious shortcomings!   It's not about just voting with our dollars. Real change comes when citizens come together to demand rules that work.   We can learn from successful movements throughout history: Gandhi, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and the environmental victories here in the 1970s. They didn't nag people to perfect their day-to-day choices. They changed the rules of the game.   Here are the three things to do to change the world: Share a big idea for how things could be better. Millions of ordinary people need to decide, "We will work together until the problem is solved." With big idea and commitment to work together, take action. After I first watched this, I gave a huge sigh of relief. I realized I was exhausting myself focusing on a million shopping and recycling decisions.   Now, I know, my real power is working on these three things: sharing a big idea, getting together with millions of people, and demanding the change we want.   The best way to get millions together is to start with two, then ten, then 100's, and 1000's around the world.   In the movie Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom, they kept using the symbol of an open hand to represent the fingers (individuals) as vulnerable, compared to the closed fist (group) as strong.   It's not enough to try to "be the change". We need to get together and "demand the change" we want to see in this world.   "Living our values in small ways shows ourselves and other we care. So, it's a great place to start. But it's a terrible place to stop. After all, would we even know who Gandhi was if he just sewed his own clothes and then sat back waiting for the British to leave India?" - Annie Leonard, Story of Change   Resource: The Story of Stuff Video Collection Green Team Academy Podcast Episode 23: 10 Lessons for Eco-Leaders from from Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom Share in the Community: How do you feel about all this? In talking about the book, Tragedy Plus Time, Adam talks about how mental health is something that requires constant awareness.   “I look at everything through the lens of: How is this going to affect my mental health?”- Adam Cayton-Holland   I also came across Amy Porterfield’s episode about dealing with depression on her Online Marketing Made Easy podcast, in honor of World Mental Health Day, October 10.   As we are doing important work, it’s worth having conversations about how we can bolster our mental health… the foundation for everything we want to be and do.   I wrote a book: Tuning In to Inner Peace: The Surprisingly Fun Way to Transform Your Life   Feel calm and lucky in any situation Nature as healer Exercise as stress reducer Say “no” to anything that doesn’t feel like a fabulous fit Ask for help   Saying “no” more: Car mechanic Job interviews   With the loss of my sister and my mom in the past two years, I saw how asking for help or not asking impacts not only your life, but those around you. With my main conversationalists gone from my life, I had a void.   Proactively reaching out for help: Got a loan Got my teeth cleaned Got vision insurance and went to the eye doctor Got my flu shot Took my car to the mechanic Took three-day jaunts to Glenwood Springs to swim in the hot springs pool Bought fresh juice for a juice cleanse Got a massage Interviewing for a business coach and virtual assistant Went back to weekly drumming and singing lesson More proactive about calling friends   Goal: Build a personal care plan that includes the human contact, love and support to help keep me strong mentally. Find out how two teachers started an Eco-Club at St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School in Redcliffe, Bristol, England. In less than two years, their initiative changed from starting an eco-club to building an eco-community. Their projects include litter patrol, plastic recycling, school gardening, hosting a green event for other schools, and more. Tune in to this inspiring story of regular people becoming eco-leaders in their communities!   Source: How to Build an Eco-Club (David Luke, 2017)   [1:00] SMRT Eco-Club started in November 2016. [1:45] Started by two teachers in response to the school leadership encouraging teachers to demonstrate environmental stewardship and the town of Bristol issued a goal of becoming a measurably cleaner town by 2020. [2:45] Started meeting weekly at lunchtime ← important strategy: meeting at a regular time [3:00] The litter patrol was seen as a bit of a joke at first, but grew to give voice to those that care about resources and their school. [3:45] Partnered with Redcliffe Garden Club for transforming a neglected piece of land into a school garden. [4:15] Worked with the school’s leadership team to encourage changes in how photocopier paper is used, and how to encourage more walking to school. [5:00] Hosted a “green event” for other schools, and included speakers from the town Council [5:30] Started a mini-recycling center and holding discussions about the problem of plastic in the school [5:45] Vision for future: plastic recycling well established, zero tolerance for litter, school garden producing healthy food for the school cafeteria, continued links with our community and above all, students automatically embracing the values of respect and care. [6:00] Changed from an eco-club to an eco-community ... cultural transformation! [6:30] Advice: Be convinced and be passionate. Don’t let negative remarks put you off. Students can only benefit through an eco-club. Respect for self, others, our planet and our future. [7:10] Started with deep values and one strategy. Willing to adjust and expand as needs and passions arise. [8:00] Worked on all levels: personal, peers, school and broader community [8:20] I hope that inspired you! If you do care, and especially if you care about the environment and you’re willing to work for change, let’s talk about voting. And specifically, how we can help get out the vote for the November 6 election. Discover six ways you can help people actually vote.   Green Team Academy Podcast with Joan Gregerson Episode 26   Time-stamped notes:   [1:00] In Australia, voting is mandatory. Voter turnout over 90%. [1:15] If 10 people represented all of the US eligible voters, in 2016 presidential election, 3 voted for Hillary, 3 voted for Trump and 4 didn’t vote. 1:45] Midterm election turnout is historically around 40%. [2:00] Have you seen the video with Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Rashida Jones talking about the Last Weekend? What could I have done after November 2016 election? Now we have another chance. [2:30] In this episode, six research-based strategies for getting the vote out. [2:45] Why? To stop rollbacks of environmental protections and have a government that really represents the people. [3:15] That’s what increasing voter turnout is all about. [3:30] 1. Believe you can make a difference. Increasing voter turnout isn’t easy. Don’t worry that your efforts will go to waste. Simple steps can increase the number of voters, and they rely on person-to-person interactions. [4:00] 2. Make sure that you’re ready to vote and that you have a plan Rock the Vote: check your voter registration status, register to vote and find out more about ballots and polling places. [4:20] 3. Set aside some time on the last weekend to volunteer. Organizers say that you can have the most impact on the last few days. Look at your calendar right now. Set aside some time to get out there. You can help by canvassing (most effective), phone calls (great for reaching other areas), or help with writing, editing, social media or events. You choose.    [5:15]  4. Research and be a resource. Voting isn’t necessarily easy or straightforward. Visit RocktheVote and look up your state to dig in to details about what documentation is needed, regulations for convicted felons, voter registration deadlines, what to do if you’ve recently moved and if you can register the day of the election (as you can in Colorado!). [6:00] 5. Hold a house party. Have a voter registration party or election watch party to help your friends be voters. [6:30] 6. Have better conversations (five parts): Talk to people about voting. Tell them that voter turnout is expected to be high. Talk about what it means to them to “be a voter” (rather than just “voting”). Discuss their plans for voting. Hold them accountable.   [8:00] Example: Hey, I’m pretty excited about the November 6 election. There’s really a lot at stake this time and they’re expecting a high voter turnout. It’s really important to me to be a voter. How about you? I got an email saying that my registration is up to date and I should get a ballot in the mail the 3rd week of October. I’m going to vote by mail. What’s your plan for voting? I’ll message you after I vote. I’ll check back with you and see how it went for you, okay?   (Or, if you’re having a house party, invite them!)   [10:00] Leave a tip on how to increase voter turnout at GreenTeamAcademy.com   Six Ways You Can Help People Actually Vote Believe you can make a difference. Climate change is arguably the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. So, why aren’t we taking steps to change our behavior? The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has tackled this head on with their Climate Change Empowerment Handbook. The handbook covers the known cognitive biases we need to overcome, and eight strategies that can help people more effectively engage with the challenge of climate change. APS also created a nifty graphic using the acronym ACTIVATE to illustrate the eight strategies.   Time-stamped notes [1:00] The more you know about climate change, the more weighty it feels. The ecological challenges ahead of us are of epic proportions. We can learn a lot by studying successful revolutions that have come before us. In this episode, you’ll hear 10 lessons for Eco-Leaders from the struggle to overcome apartheid in South Africa, as told in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. [1:00] Our education systems don’t teach us about representation or revolution. [1:15] Historically, there is a tendency for power to be concentrated in the hands of the few, at the expense of the many. [1:30] It is no less of a challenge than overcoming slavery, genocide, or apartheid. [2:00] You can’t compare 1-to-1 the suffering and injustice of apartheid to the collapse of ecological systems, but there are some similarities. [2:15] What could be more unjust than taking away the opportunity for future generations to inhabit a liveable world. [2:30] We can learn a lot from studying how huge entrenched problems were overcome. [2:50] Takeaways from the film: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:00] Not on Netflix. Check the library or wherever you watch movies. [3:15] 10 Lessons for Eco-Leaders from the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:30] 1. Individually we are weak. Together we are strong. (with open hand vs closed fist image) [4:00] 2. Welcome the challenges. They will help you become who you need to be. [4:45] 3. Remind people that the end result you desire is inevitable. [5:25] 4. Don’t turn on each other. [6:40] 5. Allies matter. [7:00] 6. Follow the money. [7:50] 7. Leaders lead. [8:30] 8. Peace is the only way. [9:00] 9. Vote. [9:45]10. I'm taking some time off and then will re-launch weekly episodes beginning Wednesday September 5, 2018. I want to make sure I have ample time to be working on courses and mentoring for those who want to go deeper. Look for courses opening later this year. Favorite saying: An empty pitcher fills no cups. For us recovering people pleasers, it's always tough to change course. But it's essential if we want to stay strong for ourselves and others. I'm heading up to the mountains for swimming and camping. I hope you too will take time in nature to relax and recharge. See you back here on September 5! It’s easy to complain about how the world is. How often do we take the time to declare the world we want and commit to helping create it. “The World We Want Is” is a global movement centered on interactive public art. You can use a paper version of this exercise to help your community brainstorm the future they want. [1:00] How do you get people to dream big? [1:30] In my neighborhood, I came across this exhibit… Large chalkboard wall Title: The World We Want Is Each square has two prompts: I want to live in a world where… To create this world, I will… [2:10] Examples: Everyone is kind to each other / Be kind myself.   People are smiling. / Smile more. We run on peace not hatred, where everyone has the right to be who they truly are. / Live my truth and motivate others to live theirs. [3:15] The World We Want is a global movement dedicated to bringing self-reflection and expression to the masses through interactive public art [4:15] Easier option: Offer the same prompts on paper at a meeting or festival. [4:30] Complaining doesn’t get us very far. Declare the world want. Then commit to making it happen. [5:00] The world as it is now is as humans have created. This is the sum of all the choices that have been made up to this point. There are things you think people could be doing better: more recycling, better shopping choices, more renewables, different policies. But, you don’t want to bring it up. Sorry, but if you want change, you’re going to make someone uncomfortable.   Green Team Academy Podcast with Joan Gregerson Episode 18   Time-stamped notes: [1:00] I was brought up to be a people-pleaser. [1:30] Being polite has serious consequences. [1:45] Talking with my dad and hearing Jimmy Carter, I thought working in energy efficiency was enough. [2:15] There was this feeling that you couldn’t really talk about the big issues. [3:15] This came up with people I’ve interviewed: not wanting to be pushy, wanting to stay under the radar to avoid vehement opinions about climate action. [3:45] There is no way to stay under the radar. I’m sorry. There is no way to do this work and not make people feel uncomfortable. [4:00] Norm engineering [4:15] There is going to be friction there. You are going to make people uncomfortable.    In the process of change, you need people to go from not thinking about it all, to starting to think maybe there is something wrong with what I’m doing. [4:45] With pesticides, we needed to raise awareness about impacts with neighbors, school districts, big Ag, etc. [5:30] Just because this isn’t an easy conversation, we aren’t going to walk away. [5:40] There need to be people that will have these conversations. We need to forget about being people pleasers. [6:00] Example: plastic. Those benefiting from profit, comfort, convenience. [4:40] First met when talking about them performing at the Youth of the Earth Festival. [5:50] Amazing support from Aztec traditions from his father and environmental educator mom [6:40] What can we learn from Xiuhtezcatl at age 6? You don’t need to already be a leader to make an impact. You do need to believe strongly that your ideas and your voice matter. You have to overcome any self-doubt that would keep you from expressing your opinion You have to ask people to do better. You have to believe in and be willing to work for a better future. We all have to work together. Though you may start small, your impact may grow more than you could imagine at the beginning [7:20] So, do you need previous experience to become an eco-leader? The idea that social ills will just work themselves out over time is a myth. In his March 31, 1968 speech, Martin Luther King, Jr., explains how we must use time for the good of society or it will be used to our detriment by those who are using it for ill will. We can’t be “too busy” to stand up to protect each other and our planet. Time-stamped notes: [1:00] Somehow, protecting and caring for the planet has come to be seen as a luxury if/when we have time and resources to do it. [1:20] The idea that we don’t have time now, but maybe we or someone else in the future will: “myth of time” [1:40] Martin Luther King, Jr. speech given on March 31, 1968, four days prior to being assassinated [2:00] Speech excerpt: The Myth of Time (below) [4:50] Takeaway: We can’t be too busy to stand up for the injustices. We can’t assume that time is going to work things out. Time is neutral. It’s how we use it that will determine the outcome. Excerpt The hour has come for everybody, for all institutions of the public sector and the private sector to work to get rid of racism. And now if we are to do it we must honestly admit certain things and get rid of certain myths that have constantly been disseminated all over our nation. One is the myth of time. It is the notion that only time can solve the problem of racial injustice. And there are those who often sincerely say to the Negro and his allies in the white community, "Why don’t you slow up? Stop pushing things so fast. Only time can solve the problem. And if you will just be nice and patient and continue to pray, in a hundred or two hundred years the problem will work itself out." There is an answer to that myth. It is that time is neutral. It can be used wither constructively or destructively. And I am sorry to say this morning that I am absolutely convinced that the forces of ill will in our nation, the extreme rightists of our nation—the people on the wrong side—have used time much more effectively than the forces of goodwill. And it may well be that we will have to repent in this generation. Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, "Wait on time." Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. So we must help time and realize that the time is always ripe to do right. This is a beautiful story about two girls who started at age 10 and 12 with the initial goal of being significant. Through their efforts, the Governor of Bali agreed to help Indonesia be plastic-bag-free by 2018. It’s a story of determination, creativity and commitment. They formed a youth organization, collected petition signatures, gave educational talks and went on a hunger strike. Their takeaway is that youth can make change. And my takeaway is that there is no reason that any of us can’t also be significant now. Time-stamped notes: [1:00] Many of us think that we’re not the ones to be eco-leaders. Someone else would be better. [1:30] Melati and Isabel Wijsen, sisters, age 10 and 12 in Bali [2:00] Decided to become significant now. [2:30] Decided to focus on plastic bags [3:10] Learned that most plastic bags end up in the ocean, the others are burned or litter. [3:25] Lesson 1: You cannot do it by yourself Formed the Bye Bye Plastic Bags youth group. Started online petitions Give educational presentations to raise awareness Distribute alternate bags, made my locals Goal: petition with 1 million signatures [4:00] Lesson 2: Think outside the box. Bali airport handles 16 million [4:20] Lesson 3: Persistence. Got permission to collect signatures behind customs and immigration [4:30] Lesson 4: Need champions at all levels of society: Ban Ki Moon, Jane Goodall [5:15] Learned patience, how to deal with frustration, leadership, friendship, teamwork, Balinese culture, commitment [5:40] Decided to do a hunger strike after learning more about Mahatma Gandhi. [6:05] 24 hours later we were picked up from school and escorted to the Governor. He signed a promise to help the people say no to plastic bags in Bali by 2018. [6:20] Not the end of the journey [6:30] Working with stakeholders groups in different regions. Still on this journey today [6:40] Kids can do things. We can make things happen. Don’t need a business plan or agenda. [6:55] Kids have a boundless energy and motivation to be the change this world needs. [7:10] Youth are 25% of the population but are 100% of the future. [7:20] Engagement ladder: no matter what your initiative is, you will have to engage at all different levels to be successful   Resources: Melati and Isabel Wijsen: Our campaign to ban plastic bags in Bali TED Talk, September 2016 https://www.ted.com/talks/melati_and_isabel_wijsen_our_campaign_to_ban_plastic_bags_in_bali#t-375318 Bye Bye Plastic Bags http://www.byebyeplasticbags.org/   Thank you for listening!
