Joe Humphreys, Our Philosophy Expert
In this episode, we sit down with the senior school librarian, Joe Humphreys, and we talk about one of our new charity focuses for the next few years: The Cold Feet Foundation, Nepal. The goal of this charitable endeavour is to support a school that has very little to its name. In the episode, Joe describes the lack of funding, lack of resources, and lack of suitable space for teaching & learning, including classrooms with mould growing up the walls and holes in the floor, a library with no books and a budget of 15p a day per person to feed hundreds of students. Joe has travelled to over 40 countries in his lifetime and often spends time volunteering when he travels. His connection to Nepal is a personal one and he speaks very movingly about why this is a worthwhile charity to support.

Joe Humphreys is a world-renowned fly fisherman. He fell in love with fly fishing at the young age of six, and ever since then he hasn’t been able to put a fly rod down, but there is much more to Joe. He is a father, husband, ice skater, wrestler, coach, but most of all a teacher. This film follows an 86 year old Joe Humphreys through the streams of State College, PA, and all the way to Arkansas as he tries to catch his dream fish: a 20lb brown trout. We see so much more as we learn about Joe’s conservation efforts and see the lives he has touched as he spreads his joy of the sport of fly fishing. Remember as Joe always says, “the secret of life is having something to look forward to.” Cast of Characters: Joe Humphreys……….Legend, Star Meigan Bell………………Director, Editor Lucas Bell……………….. It was certainly an honor to host Joe Humphreys on this episode of the Fly Fishing Journeys Podcast. Many consider him among our top fly fishing teachers and ambassadors today. At age 91 he is strong and leads an active lifestyle. He still loves to be on the road passing his knowledge on through his teaching. He also still loves to fish and especially to hunt giant brown trout. I recently purchased an amazing documentary, Live The Stream, the Story Of Joe Humphries, which I highly recommend. You can rent or buy it on iTunes or at Livethestreamfilm.com. It won the 2019 Drake Awards Film of the Year and rightly so, it’s pretty special. http://www.livethestreamfilm.com Thanks to our sponsors: https://www.nor-vise.com http://www.bissellinsuranceagency.com https://flyfishingshow.com http://iceland2020.net
This week I interview one of my fly-fishing heroes, Joe Humphreys. Joe talks about hot to stay young on the river, how to fish nymphs at night, and about the inspirational new film about his life called Live The Stream: The Story of Joe Humphrey. It’s now available own and rent on the iTunes Store: or Go to www.livethestreamfilm.com to buy the film on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and more platforms including: Prime Video, Google Play, Vimeo, and Youtube. I broke my Tenkara rod when I got my fly snagged. What is the safest way to try to retrieve a snagged fly when using this type of rod? Why won’t my clinch knots tighten properly? How can I get over my reluctance to fish emergers? A suggestion from a taxidermist on how to handle raw deer hides for fly tying. Do trout take Perdigons in unnatural colors out of curiosity or do you think they resemble food? What is an easy way to learn fly-fishing entomology? Why do the trout I take in mountain streams carry parr marks even into adulthood? What do I tell people who berate me for torturing fish? Are there circumstances when I should set my indicator shallower than 1 ½ times the water depth? I can’t seem to get away from the crowds no matter how far I drive. What should I do? If I find lots of creek chubs in a stream, does that mean it won’t also hold trout? If you are not certain how to pair two streamers together, does it make sense to fish just one? Can I use split shot to get my nymphs deeper when Euro nymphing instead of tying my own flies with varied weights? Do you have some tips for casting a Depth Charge line? Do you have some suggestions on how to swing flies for Great Lakes steelhead?

This week I don’t have much of a Fly Box, because I just have not been getting many questions from listeners. Where are you? I’m lonely here. But I do have a big interview with the great Joe Humphreys, a savvy, iconoclastic fly fisher that I’ve admired for many years. He has a unique take on nymph fishing and has never used an indicator, so you may get some new ideas on how to fish nymphs on this one. By the way, Joe will be at Orvis Pittsburgh this Saturday and Sunday morning, so if you want to see him in action or ask some questions, get over to Orvis Pittsburgh.
