Environmental protections before the next president could be sworn in were implemented to help save 625 million acres of ocean from oil and gas exploration. In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses recent developments regarding the Gulf of Mexico and new protections for marine environments in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Name Change Proposal The episode begins with a focus on Donald Trump's controversial proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." Lewin explains that such a unilateral change is not feasible due to historical, cultural, and diplomatic considerations. The name "Gulf of Mexico" has been recognized internationally for centuries and reflects the region's shared history with Mexico and Cuba. Any attempt to rename it would require significant international consensus, which is unlikely given current diplomatic tensions. Lewin emphasizes that the U.S. cannot simply impose a new name on an internationally recognized body of water. New Protections for Oceans The podcast then shifts to President Joe Biden's recent actions aimed at protecting marine ecosystems. Biden has banned offshore drilling and gas drilling across 65 million acres of federal waters, including sensitive areas in the Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific Oceans, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This decision was made through an executive order invoking the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, which grants the president broad authority to withdraw federal waters from future oil and gas leasing. Lewin notes that while Biden's ban can be reversed by a future administration, it would require congressional approval, making it more challenging for Trump to undo the protections unilaterally. The episode highlights that the economic impact of this ban may be minimal in the short term, as existing offshore rigs continue to operate and new projects take years to develop. Overall, the episode underscores the complexities surrounding the Gulf of Mexico's name and the importance of Biden's new protections for marine environments. Lewin invites listeners to share their thoughts on these developments and the future of ocean conservation. How will Trump administration policies affect our economy and money? Drill, Baby, Drill Energy prices affect nearly every product we purchase. Higher energy costs increase prices and inflation. Increased production will lower energy prices. Lower energy prices will reduce inflation. Deport illegal immigrants Total cost to transport, house, feed, and support estimated about $500 billion annually. This money came from taxpayers and government money printing. This is inflationary. The government money was being used to compete for food, clothing, housing, and everything we purchase. Deporting illegal immigrants will reduce housing demand. The US has a housing shortage. Allowing millions of people in the country when you have a housing shortage will drive up the cost of housing. They have to live somewhere. Fewer people will reduce housing demand. Housing costs will likely decrease. The effect will be regional. Think about Springfield, Ohio. The government moved about 30,000 Haitians into a town of about 50,000. Housing costs skyrocketed. What will happen if the Haitians are returned to Haiti? There will be thousands of empty homes and apartments. Prices will drop. Stop endless wars The US government spends far more than any other country on defense spending. I am in favor of a strong military. Most Americans are against war unless necessary to defend ourselves or interests that are vital for our national security. Excessive spending is inflationary. Wars are expensive. Defense contractors make lots of money from war. Nearly everyone else loses either in blood or money. Less spending would reduce inflation. Dept of Government Efficiency – Elon Musk Elon has stated he can reduce $2 trillion in annual spending. 2024 spent $6.75 T, revenues $4.9 T = $1.85 T deficit spending Reducing government spending will reduce inflation. Even if the Trump administration does everything right, some problems will take a while to fix. Debt is a major challenge. Record levels of debt requires record selling of bonds. This pushes bond interest rates higher. Until the government starts paying down debt, bond interest rates will remain elevated. At the same time, the Federal Reserve is lowering borrowing costs by reducing interest rates. This creates an opportunity. Your Personal Bank allows you to earn dividends (likely increasing) while accessing funds to pay off debt, purchase items, or invest in assets. If dividends are higher than the borrowing costs, you keep the difference. This creates positive cash flow (positive arbitrage) on your money. We are likely headed to a historical positive arbitrage scenario. Historically, positive arbitrage has been available 24 of the past 28 years. The other 4 years the dividends and borrowing costs were similar. The average annual positive arbitrage was 2-3%. This is interest you earn on money you spent or allocated elsewhere!

This week, we're continuing our coverage of the lead-up to November's elections by looking at an institution that has become increasingly contentious over the past four years: the U.S. Supreme Court. The specter of the Court has loomed over these elections like never before—from former President Trump repeatedly taking credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and thanking the Justices he appointed for doing so, to the next president's role in reshaping the Court. What role is the Court playing in this election cycle and how will this election cycle influence the next four years of Supreme Court rulings?Helping us to sort through these questions and set the record straight is our very special guest, Skye Perryman: Skye L. AP correspondent Julie Walker reports an Arizona swing county could be why we may not know the next president on Election Day.
Last night, in front of a crowd of 70,000, Vice President Kamala Harris gave her closing argument on why she should become the next President of the United States. "Listen, one week from today, you will have the chance to make a decision that directly impacts your life, the life of your family, and the future of this country we love," said Harris. She delivered her speech at the Ellipse, right where Donald Trump spoke before inciting a riot that attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. She framed the stakes as a choice between unity and division, calling for a new generation of leadership. She drew sharp distinctions between herself and Trump, warning that his return to office would bring vengeance and chaos, while pledging to focus on affordability, justice, and the dignity of all Americans. From lowering costs to safeguarding democracy and healthcare, Harris emphasized her vision for an America united, calling this election the most important vote of our lifetimes. Why is meaningful change in U.S. foreign policy is so difficult to achieve? This question is especially relevant with the U.S. presidential election just weeks away now, and analysts and policy makers all over the world are discussing how a Trump or Harris presidency might shift American foreign policy in the years to come. But how likely is it that we will see meaningful change at all? Historically, it has been incredibly challenging for presidential administrations to break away from entrenched foreign policy paths —even when the need for change seems obvious. Presidencies often start with a declaration of pivots and major strategic reorientation, these then get ground down by powerful bureaucracy, political pressures and human tendency to preserve the status quo. When change does happen, leaders often pay a high political price for it. Take, for instance, the example of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the end, it took two decades and much internal pushback before President Biden was able to officially make this happen - even though the decision had long had significant public support. In this week's episode, Sophia Besch sits down with Christopher Chivvis and Stephen Wertheim to discuss their research that dissects how strategic foreign policy change does happen despite pressures to maintain the status quo—and what it would take for the next American president to enact such a change.Notes:Christopher S. With the election just over two weeks away, a lot of people feel nervous about who the next president will be. There is concern that there will be unrest depending on who is elected. KSL Newsradio's Amanda Dickson asked her guests on A Woman's View what their thoughts are as we come down the home stretch. Her guests this week include Kimberly Gardner, elementary and middle school teacher with 33 years experience and chairperson of the Colonial Heritage Festival, Ganel-Lyn Condie, popular speaker, host, author and mental health advocate, and Kelli Pierce, digital media associate with the R Street Institute.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 15: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The special guest was the next President of the United States. Kamala Harris nailed the speech. It could not have been better. Not a sour note, not a space for complaint, not an issue avoided. Plus: Harris has cut Trump's lead from nine points to five points… in TEXAS. Harris is now AHEAD in North Carolina by a point. There is the RFK Junior thing coming today. There is leaked audio of Trump pledging fealty to the families of the January 6th traitors and hosting an event for them two weeks from now, and more blatant Trump antisemitism hinting at a nightmare scenario in which he merges the streams: where the conspiracy theories about rigged elections and immigrant voting gets fully crossed with racism and anti-semitism (and the advanced kind, where there are “good” Trump-supporting Jewish people, and “bad” Trump-hating Jewish people. There is also the increasing evidence that Trump is, at least accidentally, giving up on winning the election and instead trying to raise the temperature so much among his fascists that they can run a coup from behind in the legislatures and the House and try to force a Contingent Election. Again from Yale historian Timothy Snyder via The New York Times: “Trump is in the classic dictatorial position: He needs to die in bed holding all executive power to stay out of prison. This means that he will do whatever he can to gain power, and once in power will do all that he can to never let it go. This is a basic incentive structure which underlies everything else. It is entirely inconsistent with democracy.” And time to make the donuts: JV Vance actually manages to fail at the simple buy-food photo-op. B-Block (24:55) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Megyn Kelly's stupidity mixes with her racism: she doesn't realize HBCU's exist because so many black students were excluded from other colleges. And Trumpsucker Mike Crispi and the one famous Cornell alumna whom the university does not recognize tie for pure inhumanity when it comes to Tim Walz's son Gus. C-Block (37:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: For everybody who's ever asked “Olbermann? Did you hit your HEAD or something?” the answer is yes and the 45th anniversary is tomorrow. Don't worry, I'll be getting better any day now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Allan Lichtman (Distinguished Professor of History, American University, and author, “Predicting the Next President: The Keys to the White House, 2024”) joins Chris Cuomo to discuss how his historically accurate 13 Keys system applies to the 2024 election and what they might reveal about the Trump-Harris race. Discover how these keys, which have accurately predicted nearly every presidential winner since 1984 and can be applied to every election dating back to 1860, were inspired by earthquake predictions and offer a unique perspective on the factors that could determine the outcome of the next election.
