It’s a tale of sound; the song of a solitary whale that vocalizes at a unique frequency, 52 Hertz, that no other whale—as the story goes—can seemingly understand.  It’s also a tale about science, and ocean life, laced with fantasy, mystery and mostly shrouded in darkness.  The whale, of unknown species and nicknamed ‘52’, was originally discovered in 1989 and has been intermittently tracked by scientists ever since. Its solitary nature baffled marine researchers. And its very existence captured the attention and hearts of millions of people.  But as 52 roams the ocean’s depths, a lot about its nature is still up in the air.  No one has ever seen it in the flesh.  Scientists have determined that it’s a male, large, possibly a hybrid, and speculated that its unique song—too low in frequency for humans, too high for whales—might be a result of a malformation.  Scientific American sat down with Josh Zeman, an award-winning filmmaker who created a documentary about 52, to talk not just about his impressive cinematic quest (and it is impressive and beautifully shot) but also the science and academic collaborations that fueled it. The documentary—written and directed by Zeman and executive produced by actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrian Grenier—is inspired by the findings of the late bioacoustics scientist William Watkins. It’s propelled by passion and curiosity, and relies on underwater acoustics to track 52 through the sound-rich and noise-heavy environment of the ocean.  A departure for Zeman in terms of genre choice, the film still exudes an air of mystery and sleuthing reminiscent of whodunits, and unfolds like a classic true-crime story, which Zeman, an investigative reporter, and a true-crime documentarian, is originally famous for.  Then again, when Zeman started making the movie, the whale was MIA and has been silent for years. In essence, Zeman re-opened a cold case to—in his own words—“set the record straight” and “bring the audience into the world of the whale.” With the help of marine scientists, he followed streams of whale songs, and other breadcrumbs in the form of auditory clues, listening in, analyzing, tracking, slowly and persistently narrowing down the circle around 52. He found him, lost him, found him again until eventually, he made an unexpected revelation about him.  It may not be the closure Zeman expected to give to his audiences. But it’s definitely a fresh chapter in this evolving tale.  Zeman says he is hopeful that other storytellers will take up the mantle and continue to unearth more facts about 52.  “What a more beautiful gift can you give than to say, ‘actually, there's another chapter.’ And then 20 years later, somebody else comes in and adds their chapter,” he says. “That’s what storytelling is.”

In an riveting and exclusive followup to a recent episode of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we talk with documentary filmmakers Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills about new evidence that has come forth since the recent airing of their true crime documentary series, THE KILLING SEASON. Josh and Rachel will break new developments in the Long Island Serial Killer case in hour 2, when we also be joined by forensic psychologist Dr. Clarissa Cole. In hour 1, Joel and Eric will delve the week’s paranormal news and give thoughts on the new year. True crime documentaries often shed new light on old cases, sometimes they even turn up new evidence, but rarely does an investigative documentary become the impetus behind the reexamination of a whole category of unsolved cases across the nation, turn up significant new evidence, and get at least one case officially reopened. Such is the case with Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills’ THE KILLING SEASON, which just ran in eight one-hour episodes on A&E. We talked with Josh and Rachel back in November before the show premiered and were astonished with what they accomplished in the course of the series, which began with a fresh look at the unsolved Long Island Serial Killer series of murders and broadened out to include a possible network of serial killers of young women across the nation. Most of the women were involved with drugs and the sex trade and not necessarily high on law enforcement’s list of priorities, but every person counts — or should count — and a rash of unsolved serial killings is a rot that goes to the very core of the nation’s moral fabric, and a network of serial killers in communication with each other should strike terror in every heart. “Peaches” killing evidence courtesy Long Island Press What even more astonishing, though — and why we have brought Josh and Rac

'The Killing Season' on A&E is one of the most engrossing true crime documentary series I have ever watched, and I was lucky enough to interview the series creators, Rachel Mills and Josh Zeman.  We discussed their experiences investigating the Long Island Serial Killer, the Daytona Beach Serial Killer, and the Chillicothe, Ohio murders. In making 'The Killing Season,' Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills encountered The Outlaws motorcycle gang, pimps, sex workers, and vigilante websleuths seeking justice. This podcast episode is not an in-depth discussion of the various theories of what went on in each of these serial killer cases, but what both of the show's producers came to feel about what they were documenting. The world of serial killers and true crime can be scary, soul-draining work, and Zeman and Mills worked like investigative journalists embedded with soldiers in a war-torn country. First, they started with the bizarre murders in Long Island, starting with the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, which may not be tied to the LISK case but may actually have led to the discovery of 10-11 victims over the course of the months following her discovery. (PS: If you want to read the DEFINITIVE book on the Long Island Serial Killer [AKA The Craigslist Killer], then check out Robert Kolker's Lost Girls.]) Their investigation then drew them south to Atlantic City and later to Daytona, where a series of serial murders seemed to follow a bizarrely familiar pattern. It's something that became increasingly unsettling as I watched The Killing Season, but I had no idea there could be any real, literal connections until I saw what Mills and Zeman had managed to uncover. This episode is a great introduction to the cases and also a kind of behind-the-scenes discussion of a fantastic piece of art about the modern world of crime. It's horrifying, scary, and totally compelling to watch. Theme: "Ten" by DJ Sun You can find my books on Amazon, as well. On May 31, 2014, SLENDERMAN went from fictional Internet meme to household word when two 12 year-old Wisconsin girls lured a friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in an effort to earn the favor of the faceless, elongated, dark-suited figure. A few days later, an emotionally disturbed 13 year-old girl near Cincinnati attacked her mother with a knife in their kitchen in the guise of Slenderman. These real life homages are all the more disturbing because the creation of the character is readily traceable to writer Eric "Victor Surge" Knudsen on the "Something Awful" Internet forum in 2009. But as the most powerful memes do, this one seeped into the very fiber of online culture to the extent that five years later young girls were willing to kill for it.Interestingly, AMHRadio was ahead of the Slenderman Zeitgeist. On the March 11, 2014 episode with documentary filmmakers JOSH ZEMAN and RACHEL MILLS, whose urban legend films CROPSEY and KILLER LEGENDS expose the terrifying truths behind the myths, we discussed the the Slenderman meme, with Zeman uniquely declaring the character to be the very personification of the Internet. Now Zeman and Mills return to discuss developments in the Slenderman saga and what may lie ahead.

On Sunday, 3/16 at 8pE, CHILLER debuts its new 2-hour special, KILLER LEGENDS. The horror documentary follows filmmakers Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills as they investigate the true crimes behind these urban legends while exploring how the myths evolved and why we continue to believe. The documentary probes the following legends of:The Candyman: Though the legend is prolific, in actuality there is only one documented case of a child dying from tainted candy: 8-year-old Timothy O'Bryan, who was poisoned on Halloween by a real-life miscreant who used the legend to hide his crime, earning him the fateful nickname. The Baby-Sitter and the Man Upstairs: While the babysitter has become the go-to victim in so many horror films, does the same hold true in real life? Tragically, yes, as the filmmakers discover in unsolved case of Janett Christman, a babysitter slain in Columbia, MO, in 1950.The Hookman: Based upon the legend of two teens lovers terrorized by a madman with a hook for a hand, filmmakers investigate the case of a killer known as The Phantom, who in 1946 attacked five couples parked on lovers' lanes in Texarkana. The Killer Clown: The filmmakers investigate “phantom clown” scares that have spontaneously occurred since the 1980s. As the duo explores Chicago's creepy clown past, from John Wayne Gacy to Bozo, they attempt to answer the question of how clowns became so evil, and why they continue to haunt our nightmares.Joshua Zeman has been creating independent films for over 10 years. His critically-acclaimed horror documentary CROPSEY, was critic's pick with The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Roger Ebert, and was “one of the scariest films of the year” in 2010.
