This week's show has a decidedly football-oriented theme (sorry) and not just because Boydy was still on a high after Arsenal's win but because James Graham's award-winning theatre production Dear England lands on our screens (1:31:40), given the full BBC1 treatment. And along those lines, both Jodie Whittaker and Joseph Fiennes join us on the show to talk all about it (44:07-58:24). Elsewhere, we slide back into the 1930s in a hardboiled gumshoe detective story with a superhero twist in Spider-Noir on Prime (1:13:37), and see if Netflix's OAP Stranger Things, The Boroughs, lives up to its pedigree (1:36:09).Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. Acting Business Boot Camp
Episode 387: Why Talented Actors Stay Invisible

Acting Business Boot Camp

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2026 20:34

There are so many incredibly talented actors out there. And so many of them do not get seen. Meanwhile there are actors with less training booking roles more regularly. And if you are one of those highly trained actors, that is so freaking frustrating. It brings up all the not so helpful questions. Am I not good enough? Why am I not getting these opportunities? Insert your favorite self-doubt here. But here's the truth. Talent alone does not guarantee visibility. I know this as a casting director. I also know this as an actor. Talent Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle Acting is an art. Just like painting, just like dancing, just like writing. But the industry that hires actors is a business. And casting directors, I can certainly say this for myself, are not only looking for great performances. We're also asking very practical questions. Does this actor fit this role? Do they understand the tone, the energy of the project? Do I feel they are professional and prepared? And then my personal favorite: does this actor know they are a good actor? What tends to happen is actors focus entirely on craft while overlooking the business side. And if you want to make a living as an actor you need to understand that both parts matter. Actually I'd say there's a third part. One of my favorite casting directors of all time, David Katy, talks about this. It's a three part job. The art, the business, and the work on yourself. Clarity Around Your Positioning One of the reasons talented actors stay invisible is that casting directors don't know where to place them. Or they try to present themselves as everything, and that just doesn't work. Confusion makes me delete. It really does. It makes me discard and move on. Go for the low hanging fruit. If you've ever seen pictures of me I am very blonde, blue-eyed, very east coast. I look like I went to preparatory school in Connecticut. And you know why? Because that's exactly what I am. I am the boss. I am the lawyer. That's my low hanging fruit. I'll tell you an embarrassing story. When I was 16 I went to a summer course at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York and I wanted to do Runaways. A show about kids on the street, in foster care, drug addicted. I would love to go back to my 16 year old self and say honey, that ain't you. Any John Hughes monologue would have been so much more appropriate. But hey, I was 16. And I met a really cute boy there so that was awesome. The point is, be where you're at. Go for what you really are. Casting works insanely quickly and we need to understand in seconds where you fit. Visibility Requires Consistent Action Another reason talented actors remain invisible is that they are not consistently putting themselves out into the industry ecosystem. Most careers grow through steady participation in the professional community. Steady participation. A lot of actors wait for the industry to discover them. They wait for the phone to ring. That is just not how it works anymore. What I call putting your business on a schedule means knowing exactly what to do and when to do it throughout the year. Auditions, networking, social media, industry relationships, creating your own work, staying engaged with casting directors and collaborators. Gabrielle Bernstein says the energy you put out is the energy you attract. That steady participation energy is so important. Confidence and Presence This is the secret sauce. This is the thing I cannot state strongly enough. I was talking to my teacher Ken Ray from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, who has taught Michelle Dockery, Damien Lewis, Joseph Fiennes, Orlando Bloom, Hayley Atwell, Lily James, Ewan McGregor. I asked him what is the thing they all have. And he talked about presence. That energy. That is what I am always looking to cultivate with my clients. Two actors can have equal talent. The one who walks in with grounded confidence is the one who makes the stronger impression and books the job. It's the actor who is good at their job and knows they're good at their job. Confidence doesn't mean arrogance. It means believing you belong in the room. Confidence isn't something that casting gives you. It's something you decide before you go in the door, before you push record on that self tape. The only person I ever have to convince is me. And that just happens to be the hardest person on the planet. But that's the only person I have to convince. The Bottom Line Talent matters. But visibility in this industry comes from a combination of things. Craft, clarity, consistency, and confidence. It's a three part job. The art, the business, and the work on yourself. Talent can open the possibility of an incredible acting career. But clarity and consistency and confidence is what allows the industry to really see you. Want to Keep the Conversation Going? Welcome to April, and we are rolling out the red carpet for our first-ever Actress Month! We're kicking things off with a deep dive into the filmography of the incomparable Cate Blanchett, beginning with the 1998 breakout that turned her into Hollywood royalty: Elizabeth. Pour yourself a glass of something regal - perhaps Mackenzie's cocktail this week, The Red Fox - as we travel back to a 16th-century England filled with shadows, whispers, and a young woman forced to trade her heart for a crown. This week, we trace the transformation of Elizabeth from a vibrant, romantic girl into the formidable, white-masked "Virgin Queen" who ruled with an iron fist. We marvel at Blanchett's ability to command the screen with just a flicker of her eyes, capturing the terrifying transition from vulnerability to cold, calculated power. We also examine Shekhar Kapur's visceral, thriller-like direction, the lush but claustrophobic costume design, and the standout supporting turns from Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes. It's a conversation about the high cost of leadership, the erasure of the self for the sake of the state, and the exact moment we all realized a legendary talent had arrived. If you love historical dramas that feel more like political horror, or if you've always wanted to know why this performance is considered the gold standard for period acting, this is the episode for you. We're blending our obsession with Cate's craft with our usual casual banter, making this a truly majestic start to our Cate Blanchett Month celebration. Long live the Queen! This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up. In this Reel Insights interview, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, chats with Young Sherlock showrunner Matthew Parkhill and star Dónal Finn about the bold new mystery series that reimagines the early days of Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty. From director Guy Ritchie, Young Sherlock is an irreverent, action-packed origin story that follows a youthfully defiant Sherlock Holmes as he is pulled into his first murder investigation, one that threatens his freedom and uncovers a globe-trotting conspiracy. Set in a vibrant Victorian world, the series explores the early adventures that help shape the legendary detective long before Baker Street.During the conversation, Parkhill opens up about honoring the Sherlock Holmes canon while still finding room to reinvent the mythology in fresh and exciting ways. He also discusses the series' biggest swing by exploring a young Sherlock who is rough around the edges and a Moriarty who enters his life far earlier than fans may expect.Finn shares what drew him to playing Moriarty at such an early stage in the character's life, along with the challenge of portraying a man who has not yet become the infamous “Napoleon of Crime.” He talks about tracing Moriarty's emotional journey and the choices that could eventually shape him into one of literature's most legendary villains.Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Dónal Finn, Zine Tseng, Max Irons, Natascha McElhone, Joseph Fiennes, and Colin Firth, Young Sherlock brings a fresh new energy to one of fiction's most iconic worlds.Visit Nerdtropolis.comFacebook.com/nerdtropolisInstagram.com/nerdtropolisTwitter.com/nerdtropolis

Trailer

1999 is one of the great movie years - perhaps because Paul Schrader's FOREVER MINE only technically premiered that year, and didn't see release until 2002 (on Starz, to boot). But is this long-gestating tale of torrid passion the Sirkian romance Schrader claims, or more of a nasty noir pastiche? Is it neither of those things, and instead a very compelling advertisement for The Legendary Pink Palace of St. Pete Beach? What's the deal with Joseph Fiennes? You'll have to listen to find out!    Further Reading: The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema by Linda Ruth Williams Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert Further Viewing: ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (Sirk, 1995), etc. FAR FROM HEAVEN (Haynes, 2002) "Pitbull - Sexy Beaches (Official Video) ft. Their job was to support and stimulate resistance behind enemy lines; their credentials fortitude, courage, immense patience and a devotion to freedom. The activity of the SOE was world-wide. Abyssinian tribesmen, French farmers, exiled Russian grandees, coolies, smugglers, printers, policemen, telephonists, tycoons, prostitutes, rubber workers, railwaymen, peasants from the Pyranees to the Balkans, even the regent of Siam - all had a part to play as saboteurs, informers, partisans or secret agents. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.Great lines:"The gods are angry" [Lucius]. -- "One of them is [Clavius].""Did he say anything?" [Clavius] -- "It is finished [centurion].""I believe Yeshua will embrace you (Clavius) as a brother, even as you slew him" [Joseph of Arimathea]."I pray not to thee today, divine Mars, but to the God of the Hebrews, Yahweh. Hear me. Take back your favor in defense of these people I seek, and relinquish them to me. If you do this with clear and recognizable signs, I found two temples for you and initiate games in your honor" [Clavius]."They... are... everywhere!" [Bartholomew, on being asked where the disciples are hiding.]"But in the end, what does it matter? In a few years, that'll be us (a corpse)" [Pontius Pilate]."Welcome, Clavius. Come join us, brother; there are no enemies here" [Yeshua]."I have seen two things which I cannot reconcile: a man dead without question, and that same man alive again" [Clavius]."My right hand turned against me. How could he follow [Yeshua]?" [Pilate] -- "Perhaps it's true" [Lucius]. -- "Well, if it is, I'll kill him again" [Pilate]."I don't have every answer; we're astounded, too!" [Peter, to Clavius]"I don't even know what to ask" [Clavius]. -- "Speak your heart" [Yeshua]. -- "I can't reconcile all this with the world I know" [Clavius].Room to improve:Although grace is abundant, I would have liked a little more on repentance. Jesus is warm and accepting, smiling and encouraging, without any anger or rebuke. Perhaps he could have been a little more serious. On the other hand, he interacts relatively little with the religious establishment -- those whom we know he would have been strongest in his denunciations. At the end, Clavius walks off on his own -- he's an independent Christian. What about Christian community?Pentecost is missed out completely. The biblical consultant(s) made many errors, unless the screen writers paid little attention. Remarkable accuracy of detail often gives way to inaccuracy or unnecessary speculation.Strong points:The characters are real people. Believable dialogue. It was interesting seeing the foolishness of the cross through the eyes of a Roman soldier.Risen stimulates us to re-vision the events surrounding the life and death of Jesus.Good development of idea of Kingdom of God not being based on power.Jesus' bodily resurrection.  (It's not rationalized or spiritualized away.)No attempt to undermine faith (common in documentaries and even in some films about Christ), or promote sectarian doctrine.Clavius is forced to choose -- good!  We can all relate to him. Even though he still has some changing to do at the end of the film, so do we... None of us has arrived.

In 1973 he formed the Living Theatre Troupe, one of New Zealand's most important experimental companies. He went on to study theatre in China, Japan, and India, then moved to Europe, where he studied with leading European teachers. As Professor of Theatre at the renowned Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Ken has trained some of Britain's top actors and film stars, including EWAN MCGREGOR, LILY JAMES, JOSEPH FIENNES, DOMINIC WEST, JODIE WHITTAKER, DAMIAN LEWIS, HAYLEY ATWELL, RHYS IFANS, MICHELLE DOCKERY, FREDDIE FOX, SIMON RUSSELL BEALE, ORLANDO BLOOM, PAAPA ESSIEDU, and DANIEL CRAIG. Ken is in regular demand internationally and has previously taught at the national drama academies of China, India, New Zealand, and Italy, and he has given courses in the UK, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, USA, and Singapore. As a journalist, he has been a regular feature writer for The Times and was for 15 years a theatre critic for The Guardian. As a public speaker, Ken has given many large-scale presentations in the worlds of business and the arts. He also trains top executives throughout Europe in presentation skills and personal impact. He is about to launch his major online course: Ken Rea Teaches Acting.  How do I get better work? And it's a really interesting question so you don't feel stuck in your career. Ask yourself what would that next level look like for you. Let's think about the acting itself. What would that look like? And so that immediately gives you a target. I want to be like this. So you know where you're going. So the next question to ask yourself is, where do you feel you are now? Which then shows you the gap between now where you are and there where you want to be. Then the next question you could ask yourself is, what would you like to have more of in your work?  You know, for example, would you like to have more personality in your acting, more sense of danger in your acting, more gravitas, more presence, more charisma, more twinkle in the eye, more playfulness? And that immediately is going to take you out of your comfort zone. Progress happens not inside that comfort zone, but just outside it. That's the life of an actor, to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's your life as an actor, constantly taking risks, working outside that comfort zone.  How can you be out of your comfort zone and still enjoy that, you know, and love performing? If you want to be more playful, more twinkle in the eye, more dangerous, what is stopping you from bringing that into the work that's stopping you from being out of your comfort zone? And what can you do about that? It takes a certain amount of comfortability in being yourself to know that you can go emotionally to a specific place and also know and play there, and it is out of your comfort zone and in a danger zone and in a scary zone, a risk zone, as you put it, but also always knowing that you have that anchor in yourself that you are able to handle it. Am I going to be good enough? Will I be found out? And I think as you get older, you make it about them, not about you. I find what works for me is, is to get the right mindset. It's about them, the energy going outward and forward with the focus on them, on what I can bring to them. Prepare meticulously. Outstanding Actor So I think the preparation is important and the mindset.  You know, you can coach yourself a lot these days just by trying things out on your laptop, on your phone, recording, and playing it back. Start to experiment with things. Be very specific in your choices.  Using contrary action as an actor. And it helps get that kind of volcano principle, you know, just the rumbling underneath the volcano before it erupts. Before it explodes, which creates, as you mentioned before, a sense of danger.  Danger, I tend to think of that as you set up a tension between yourself, the actor, and the audience, thinking, "Oh, wow, where's she going with this? What's going to happen next?" Because audiences love to be thrilled and surprised, don't they? We lose that sense of playfulness that is the source of our charm, our creativity, and our imagination in adult life. And so a lot of the journey of the actor is to go back the wheel turns full circle back to that, to find at the adult age. I think that it's more fun to play the game if you know that you are capable and can handle whatever circumstance comes your way in life.  Knowing you are capable, I think, is such an important part of being a good actor because you need to feel safe. So a good question to ask yourself then is okay, if there is fear, what is the source of the fear? Ken's New Exercise  Ken's Secret Weapon Exercise And I think a lot is about paring away the clutter. I use that phrase a lot, you know, just to find a simplicity and an energy that comes from a calm center but is fully concentrated. As the actor, you play with the other actor, but you're also playing with the audience and have to make sure they're enjoying being there.
