Canadian Jews overwhelmingly support Israel, but hesitate to call themselves ‘Zionists'. A new study explains why

When sociologist Robert Brym published his research on Canadian Jewry in November 2024, his findings made international headlines. While 94 per cent of the community said they support Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state—and about 84 per cent were strongly or somewhat emotionally attached to Israel—barely half said they called themselves Zionists. The three progressive Jewish organizations that commissioned the survey concluded it proves how nuanced conversations about Israel are within Canada's Jewish community after Oct. 7. It also showed how no one can claim to speak for the majority of Canadian Jews, they added—not the mainstream centre-right organizations, nor the anti-Zionist far-left ones. All the while, the author himself has been quietly fuming, as he believes his original findings have been “weaponized”, deliberately misinterpreted by Jewish groups—mainly Independent Jewish Voices—in order to bolster their own political goals. This came to his attention a few weeks ago in the Senate, where a committee has been studying antisemitism in Canada. Byrm has been sitting on the results of a new study he did earlier this year, which he says proves them wrong. He revisited the same nearly 600 people who answered the first time, and asked why 51 per cent felt they could not call themselves Zionists. Now that his paper has been published in the latest issue of the academic journal Canadian Jewish Studies, Brym is eager to set the record straight: while he found the same overwhelming support for Israel as a Jewish state at 94%, modern interpretations of the word “Zionism” are making many Canadian Jews reject the label. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, Ellin Bessner sits down with Brym to unpack his latest findings and to hear his advice for people who support Israel but don't want to use the Z-word. ADVENT WEEK THREE: JOYDecember 18 Rev. Jenny WynnMore than CrumbsMatthew 15:21-28She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from theirmasters' table.” Matthew 15: 27Mary Oliver wrote in her poem “Don't Hesitate,” “Joy is not meant to be acrumb.” This wisdom echoes Matthew 15:21–28, where a Canaanite womanseeks mercy for herself and her daughter, who is tormented by a demon. Shecries out loudly to Jesus. Her cries are met by Jesus' silence. Annoyed thedisciples urge him to send her away for being too loud.Jesus finally speaks, saying, “I was sent only for the lost sheep of the houseof Israel.” Undeterred, she kneels and pleads. His reply is harsh and cutsdeep, “It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.”Nevertheless, she persisted. This outsider refused silencing, even by Jesus. With an expansive vision of God's household, she fought for her and herdaughter's place in it. Her bold reply, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fallfrom their masters' table.” opened his eyes. He praised her faith. Her daughterwas healed. This woman helps Jesus to see how wide God's welcome ex-tends.In Advent, this brave woman teaches us. Standing between what was andwhat could be, she joined the endless chorus crying out to Emmanuel. Sheclung to a crumb of hope, believing her world and her daughter's world couldchange. Her voice joins countless others still crying for a different way, namely the wayof justice. She reminds us never to settle for crumbs. God's welcome, mercy, and joy were never meant to be mere crumbs for anyone. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Why B2B Marketers Hesitate to Choose an AI Tool and How to Move Forward with ConfidenceIn this episode, Donna Peterson talks about the real fears many B2B marketers face when thinking about using AI tools and large language models. She explains why choosing an AI tool can feel overwhelming and why many industrial brands, executive education programs, and companies with long sales cycles hesitate to get started.Donna highlights three concerns she hears most often:• Not knowing which large language model to choose• Worrying that AI will harm personal relationships• Feeling unsure about learning what seems like a new technologyShe explains that tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot all work in similar ways, and the key is understanding how to guide them. Donna reinforces that AI should not replace personal connection. Instead, it should give marketers more time to build trust by handling routine tasks in the background.Listeners will learn how large language models respond to clear direction, why “garbage in, garbage out” still applies, and how to start using AI safely without risking their brand voice. Donna also discusses the increasing interest in AI agents and why companies need to understand LLMs before creating customized agents for different departments. The episode includes simple steps B2B teams can take to start using AI immediately, along with practical guidance for industrial marketers who want to use AI without losing the human touch that builds long-term relationships. These insights support marketers looking for clarity on how to start with AI, how to protect their brand voice, and how to use AI tools responsibly in B2B marketing.Episode Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Purpose00:56 Common Fears of B2B Brands Using AI01:29 Choosing the Right AI Tool02:38 Overcoming the Fear of Learning New Technology03:23 Maintaining Personal Connections with AI05:20 Deep Dive into Large Language Models06:19 The Importance of AI Training in Corporations08:01 The Role of AI Agents in Business10:38 Practical Tips for Using AI Effectively14:38 The Risks of Relying Solely on Software Platforms19:29 Final Thoughts and EncouragementIf you found this episode helpful, please subscribe and rate the show. I'm breaking down the brain behind the battle: how your beautiful, well-meaning brain prioritizes safety over purpose, why new = "danger" to your nervous system, and how that turns into over-planning, perfection, and procrastination. I'll share my own pattern (hello, lifelong second-guesser), a simple trailhead metaphor you'll never forget, and the exact mini practice I use with clients to start rewiring safety toward faith: "This is my brain trying to keep me safe… but I am safe with God." By the end, you'll feel relief (you're not broken), language for your specific pattern, and a small action to start leading your brain instead of letting it lead you. Psalm 5 invites us to rejoice, to sing for joy, even in the midst of evil, wickedness, lies, and destruction. Mary Oliver's poem, "Don't Hesitate", invites us to not be afraid when we unexpectedly encounter joy, but to jump in. Let us hold onto joy in the middle of all the chaos and evil in this world. It can be difficult for all of us to live into the idea that "the joy of the Lord is our strength" when so much of the world and the news are pushing us in other directions. What if joy is one way that we can resist all that is wrong with the world? How can we diligently pursue joy and live in joy as we journey through this wild life on earth? There is something about good things that makes us hesitate. And that something is called self-sabotage.There are so many great things we think of doing or want to do, but then... don't.We hesitate on the “what ifs”, on the “but who cares?” and the, “I can't,” “I am not good enough,” and so on and so on.So instead of doing that something good, you retreat back into a hole, cutting yourself off from experiencing that something good and allowing others to experience it too.A little hesitation is necessary, healthy, and good.It lets you take a moment to take the best action steps you can towards that something good. But when that hesitation becomes way too concentrated, instead of it being a source of good, it becomes destructive.Hesitation should make us second-guess ourselves, but only so that we can be sure of what we are doing and why we are doing it.Not to make us sure of the outcome but sure of our reason and intention, and then from there to put the trust in Allah to continuously guide and support you.

"When it comes to caregiving, the assumption about being able to take what we've learned and just naturally grow is not always going to be true." How do you think you would feel if you were caregiving for a second or third person living with dementia? Would you feel more prepared because of your previous experience? If you answered "yes," you might be surprised by what research is revealing about experienced caregivers. We are Sue Ryan and Nancy Treaster. As caregivers for our loved ones with Alzheimer's and other types of dementia, both of us have been caregivers more than once, and we recently learned about enlightening research from Dr. Emily Mroz, a researcher at Emory University's School of Nursing who coined the phrase "experienced caregiver." Her research is shedding light on a common phenomenon that affects millions of families: providing dementia care for multiple loved ones throughout adulthood. Dr. Mroz is a tenure-track assistant professor and social behavioral scientist who studies how people think, feel, and act within their social and personal situations. With training in developmental psychology, gerontology, geriatrics, and public health, she uses her multidisciplinary perspective to develop resources and interventions that support people living with serious illness, family caregivers, and those who are bereaved. Through her research and interviews with caregivers, Dr. Mroz has identified crucial insights about experienced caregivers that challenge common assumptions and offer practical guidance for those stepping into the caregiving role again. They're looking through you.  Bottom-First Screening: While you obsess over that job title, elite recruiters scroll directly to your volunteer work and recommendations. This is where they spot the difference between performers and pretenders. The $10K Truth Bomb "If I handed you $10,000 for development right now, where would it go?" Hesitate? You're done. Your immediate answer reveals what you know you lack — and whether you're brave enough to admit it. ARU: The Invisible Scorecard Appreciation. Respect. Understanding. Leaders who master this trinity don't chase loyalty — it hunts them down. No Scars  = No Chance Perfect candidates terrify top recruiters. They want someone who's been burned to ashes and rebuilt themselves. Battle-tested. Not bubble-wrapped. Team Credit = Instant Credibility The moment you say "I" instead of "we" when describing victories, you've exposed yourself as a corner-office liability. And if you're stuck in clarity limbo, there's a reason for that. It's not confusion. It's disconnection from your own authority. This isn't soft coaching. It's power reclamation.
